Built-In iSight NOT RECOGNIZED after EFI Update 1.1

After updating to EFI 1.1 on my iMac 20 Inch (2,16Ghz) the built-in iSight-Cam is not
working anymore. It´s not showing up in the system profiler > USB Devices.
I bought the iMac last week, switched it on, the cam took a picture on the user account creation,
I applied the EFI-Update and OSX 10.4.8. After that the cam was gone.
I tried everything from resetting SMC, PRAM to reinstalling Combo-Update 10.4.8 ... NOTHING helped !
Any ideas or solutions ???
P.S.: Sorry for my crappy English, I´m writing from Germany !

Here´s a report from MacFixIt.com about this problem:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20061211231332862
Built-in iSight not recognized Some users have reported loss of their built-in iSights after applying the iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.1. In some cases, this issue can be resolved by resetting the SMC (system management controller) using this process:
1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Resetting PRAM can solve a variety of issues As mentioned in our coverage of recent EFI Firmware updates issued for other Macs, a number of potentially serious issues apparent after applying this EFI Firmware Update can be resolved by simply resetting PRAM/NVRAM via the following process:
Shut down your Mac, then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
This workaround is a good first course of action before exploring more complex fixes. It should also be attempted if your system cannot properly startup after applying the update.

  • Built in iSight not working after software update!

Last night, I updated front row, quicktime, and iTunes via the software updater. Now nothing is recognizing my built in camera (iChat, photo booth). It says there is no camera connected to the computer. Also, software update isn't working. Does anybody have any idea what could have happened and how to get it running again? Thanks!

Installing the combo update - as you suggested - did not solve the problem. Any other ideas? The iSight is still not being recognized by the system profiler.
Here is what I suggest you do next.
System Profiler is a pre-Lion term.  If you are really using OS X 10.7.3, you need to use the "System Information" utility.
After you launch "System Information", click the "USB" item in the "Hardware" item of the System Information window's sidebar.  (If the reveal triangles are pointing to the right like ►, click on it so it points down like this ▼ to find the USB item.)  Then look under each USB bus item in the "USB Device Tree" for your camera.
If there is no iSight or FaceTime camera listed anywhere in your "USB Device Tree", verify that you used the correct PMU/SMC "reset" procedure for your particular Mac model.  If your camera is still not recognized in System Information", yours is most likely a hardware problem that will require a professional fix.
Then contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
Unless you have a current backup, make one before giving your Mac to the repair technician.

  • Built-in iSight not recognized

If I boot up my mac and start photobooth straight away, I get the message: "Photo Booth cannot open because no camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application - Make sure your digital video camera is properly attached and turned on. If you are using the camera with another application, close that application before trying to open Photo Booth again."
However I have not started any other application nor is my camera disconnected (it's a built-in isight on my macbook black)
    Questions:
    - Does anyone know a way of finding out, which application is using the camera?
    - Does anyone know how troubleshoot the camera, e.g. find out if it's "connected" properly?
    - Has anyone ever had a similar problem?
Last week, the cam was still working and I don't remember having installed anything that could have affected the camera functionality.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Built-in iSight Not Working After Re-format

I just reformatted and reinstalled Mac OS X and applied all the system updates that were downloaded. Computer is working great. When I went to use iChat and Photobooth, it says my iSight is not connected or in use by another program.
How can I get it working again? It was a fresh install of the OS. Do I need any drivers?

    Hello JCrew7384
I doubt that reinstalling the OS will be needed or helpful, and you do not need to add any "drivers" for use in OS X. If you decide to try an OS reinstall, my thoughts on Reinstalling Mac OS X are in this linked page. After you reinstall using your system installer disk, you can use the Combo Updater linked below to update to the latest version (10.4.10 v1.1 for iNtel) of OS X in one step.
Unless you get better suggestions from iNtel Mac users, here are some common solutions that help most iNtel Mac users avoid a visit to their Apple Service Technician for the "camera not connected" problem.
None of the following suggestions is complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to try them one-by-one until you find the one that fixes your Mac.
Disconnect all unnecessary peripherals while trying these suggestions.
    (0) If you did not repair permissions after your OS X reinstall, do so now and check your iSight again. (Click here if you need help.)
    (1) Restart your Mac. Sometimes that is all that is required.
    (2) If you use VMware Fusion to run Windows on your Mac, consider disconnecting iSight from your Virtual Machine as recommended by user "The.VCI" in this post.
    (3) If you use an HP printer/scanner with your Mac, consider the "daemon" suggestions from user "parkersal" in this post.
    (4) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.) As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application  message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
    (5) Try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
    (6) If resetting or the other troubleshooting suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    - Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    - Even if you have previously repaired permissions, do it again immediately prior to performing the next step. (Click here if you need help.)
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (7) A few iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight.
    (8) If none of these suggestions help, I suggest that you take your iMac to your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check.
If you need to post back for more info, please tell us why you decided to reinstall OS X. Were you, and are you still, having any unexplained problems with your Mac other than this iSight issue?

  • Built in iSight not recognized by iMovie

I have been working on this for days ! When i launch iMovie and select the isight camera, it tells me - "No camera connected". The built in iSight works in iChat and Photobooth. I have tired out every suggestion including deleting plists, repairing permissions, ensuring no other programs are using it. I reinstalled earlier versions of iMovie but the same problem. It shows up in the USB in sys profiler.
Running Leopard 10.5.5 and iMovie 08 7.1.1 (i reverted to this one hoping it would make a difference - it didnt). Nothing is hogging the camera. I have fixed every problem I ever had but this one completely stumps me. Hope someone can help !

WOW ... it works! Boy was this a good find! I did all the things listed below with I-movie. I am running Leopard 10.5.5. I called tech support and they walked me through this process. IT WORKS!
I now have ISIGHT AND IMOVIE TOGETHER like it should be. Not sure why it glitches without this being done. Perhaps the way QuickTIME is loaded? Anyway, here is the short of it ...
1.) REMOVE QT from your applications and library preferences
2.) RELOAD ORIGINAL DISC for OS keeping the same settings when it brings you to that option for a reload. Choose options under DISC #1 and choose the reload with preferences.
3.) Takes about an hour total ... follow loading sequence
    4.) GO TO: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime75forleopard.html
5.) Download and install QT BEFORE doing a MAC SOFTWARE UPDATE
6.) After installing QT restart and then UPDATE SOFTWARE ...
Hope this helps someone as much as it helped me! NO MORE CONVERSION TO IMOVIE! HURRAY!

  • X7 headset is not recognized after Belle update

    Hi,
afters Belle update my original headset is not recognized by Nokia X7, can't listen to music or radio. The icon is not visible.
Headset is 100% ok, I tried it on different phone and works fine.
After hard reset is starts working but after unplugged and plugged one again it is still not working. Another hard reset didn't help.
Also tried accessories settings in settings menu - changing profiles and other setting - didn't help.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

    Same problem here too.
Updated to Belle and tried to listen to my music using the original nokia x7 headsets and the music plays only from the speakers too. Tried the headsets on my brother's nokia x7 updated to belle too and they worked fine. Others headsets also didnt work in my nokia x7 but they did in my brother's. I tried to reinstall Belle, restore orinigal settings several times and it didn't work.
Think i just gonna have to sent my phone to the SAT

  • Built in iSight not working after Lion install

First I thought it was iglasses which I removed. I then unplugged my secondary Logitech cam; but still I can't get any image from the Built in iSight Camera after my Lion install.
It shows up as a USB peripheral in the mac System Profiler. What gives?
    Thanks

Hi, i read this very useful post to undestand why my iSight camera won't work under Quicktime video recorder, on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. I was sure it worked in the past, and for example Photo Boot works, Skype works but not Quicktime. I tried the reset pause, and anything happens. Solution for me was the idea of disconnect some USB peripherical. It was my external audio card for me, a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 audiocard. It starts to work immediately. If i reconnect the audio card after the working window in Quicktime, it seem to continue to work in a perfect way, but if i close and reopen Quicktime iSight still blocked. Very strange, anyway i just can make it start when i need. I hope this will be useful to others.

  • Built-In iSight Not Recognized / Not Working

I am having a lot of trouble getting my iMac G5 Intel Core Duo machine to recognize that it has a built-in iSight camera.
I tried running photo booth and it tells me: "[N]o camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application." However, I am not running any other application that could be using the camera.
Also, iChat AV says "There is no camera attached to this computer."
What is going on???? How can I fix this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, js26
If you have tried all relevant suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight, and if the OS X System Profiler still does not show built-in iSight as a USB Device as in this picture:
contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service. An AASP can tell you what's wrong after he looks at it.
If your Mom's Mac "Looks like windows" to you, it may be running Windows via VMware Fusion. If she uses VMware Fusion to run Windows on her Mac, consider disconnecting iSight from the Virtual Machine as recommended by user "The.VCI" in this post.
If you can make Windows work on your Mom's Mac but have problems with its OS X, her OS X System software may be damaged. Consider Reinstalling Mac OS X.

  • 2nd cd/dvd drive not recognized after security update 2014-002

I have a 3rd party CD/DVD drive as my 2nd drive in my Mac Pro and after installing security update 2014-002 it is not recognized by the computer.  It does not even show up under "About This Mac" or as a drive in disk utility.  Worked fine up until this update.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

I think I have solved my own problem.  After 'restarting' the computer several times with no effect I turned the computer off and let it set for 15 minutes, not that I think the time period had anything to do with it, but upon turning the computer back on the 2nd CD worked fine.  I'm sure you folks who are wizards in this can explain why turning the computer off did what restarting did not.

  • DVD drive not recognized after Security update

    Hello -
Well, for whatever reason I decided to apply some Apple software updates today. I repaired permissions, did a back up to an external Firewire drive with SuperDuper and downloaded several packages - iDVD 6.0.2, iMovie 6.0.2, Quicktime 7.1, iPhoto 6.0.3, iWeb 1.1, and Security Update 2006-003. I installed the Security Update and rebooted. I had read about an issue with DVDs, so promptly inserted a DVD-R disc of mine with a movie on it (not a commercial DVD, footage I had shot on my own). It was not recognized. I restarted with the mouse button held, no luck. I repaired permissions, no change.
I restarted from the backup on the external drive and cloned the backup over to my Powerbook. The problem did not go away, there the DVD sits, unrecognized. Tried to see if DVD player would see the DVD, got a message "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]" disc burning in System profiler says no burning device was found. Tried to re-install DVD player via 4.6.1 update, got a message "Compatible DVD hardware was not detected, installation will not proceed".
Where to next? I haven't booted into open firmware to try to eject the disk that way, but one post on the discussions here somewhere had no luck. I'd really rather not erase and re-install and migrate from my back-up, but if that is all that's left, ok. Thanks for your help.
BTW, 10.4.6 ona 1.5 GHz Al PowerBook with 2GB RAM, not original RAM but Samsung from OWC. Thanks again.

Well, one thing I had not tried was to reset PRAM//NVRAM. I combined that step with shutting down, unplugging the power cord and letting it sit for 15 minutes. Reconnected power, restarted while holding cmd-option-P-R through the second start-up chime, and viola, my DVD appears on the desktop, the drive is listing in the system profiler, problem gone. Thanks all for the rapid responses.

  • Built-in iSight not recognized on web browsers

    Hello,
I have recently updated plugins and my browser (Firefox AND Safari) said that an error occurred with the plugins and data had been lost. I know that a lost a few key plugins, and ever since, my iSight hasn't been recognized online anywhere. Facebook, YouTube, online schooling, and other thing you can think of. HOWEVER... it still works in the Skype application and in Photo Booth, iMovie, and other apps that are dependent on an app, not the browser. This is what makes me think it's related to the plugins. Several 10.6.5 users are currently finding problems with Flash based video web sites, perhaps due to timing differences in the various update cycles of the developers.
Therefore, check all third-party items like Flip4Mac, Safari "Extensions", web-based chat items, social web site "toolbars", your other third-party plugins, etc., to be sure you are using the latest versions compatible with your system's versions of OS X and browser. Uninstall any with known issues pending their next update.
If you are still having iSight problems but ONLY on Flash-based web sites, here are some things you can try. Depending on system configuration and installed third-party items, various users have reported different methods of restoring Flash video website functionality. Which might work for you seems to be a matter of what you have added to your system, so keep trying any relevant to your system until you find the one that might work for you.
    (1) For those who have installed Google plugins, user OysterOyster reports that uninstalling them restores proper iSight function with Flash and Mac OS X 10.6.5.
If Google is your problem, the GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app should be in your hard drive's Library/Application Support/Google/ folder. (not your *Home > Library* folder)
Several users confirm that using the Google uninstaller works to restore Flash video functions.
Some other users, including those who do not use the Google plugins, have found other remedies.
    (2) User joew13 reports that installing the 64-bit Flash plug-in beta for Mac OS X (DMG, 8.7 MB) fixed Flash sites for him.
This link allows download of the 64-bit plugin beta from an official Adobe page:
      http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
or, to download the beta directly, click this link--> http://tinyurl.com/2frejs4
Several other users have confirmed success after the beta update.
    (3) User imagerle downgraded Flash to version 10,0,45,2 to restore Flash video.
If this older version is not available on a backup or an old install disk, it can be downloaded from Adobe's Archived Flash Players page:
      http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html
    (4) User sirjoe82 and others have reported that uninstalling Flip4Mac restored their Flash video website functions.

  • Built-in iSight not recognized in any app

Nice to see a service like this . . . at least for me to vent . . .
My built-in camera is not working for any application (PhoneBooth, Skype, iChat) and I've perused the troubleshooting forums for the past hour or so. Tried 1) checking USB in System Profiler 2) zapping PRAM 3) resetting SMC, to no avail. Is it worth looking at the software (i.e. updates, re-installs, etc), or should I just call my Apple store in town tomorrow? Any estimates on cost to fix these built-in cameras? I might just buy and install an external camera if it's too much money to fix the built-in one. Thanks for any and all responses.

Use Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 suggestions to troubleshoot and perhaps fix your iSight. If you cannot make iSight work using the other suggestions there, contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
Your Apple-Authorized Service Provider can answer your other questions. If your think that cost might be a significant concern, explain that to your AASP at the beginning of your conversation. If an estimating charge is necessary for your problem, the AASP can tell you how much it will be.
After evaluating your problem, your AASP can give you his best estimate and likely provide a maximum expected amount for any needed service. You can then decide whether repairs are economically feasible before the work is actually started.
If the cost is too great and you do not intend to trade Macs, an external camera such as a Mac-compatible, Firewire-connected, camcorder or one of the webcams suggested here are possible alternatives:

  • Built-in iSight not recognized by Skype!?!?!

Bah. Just got this macbook. Running Leopard 10.5.1, etc. but Skype won't recognize my camera. Photobooth works just fine and I can see it under my system profiler. What gives?!?!

(1.a.) If your post means that you cannot even start a video session and you have not yet tried doing this, set your Skype > Preferences... > Video > Camera to show "iSight". If iSight is not available there, consider the other numbered suggestions here. (Also put a tick mark in "Enable Skype Video" and then check the Skype Audio Preference settings while you have Skype Preferences open.)
(1.b. ) If your post means that you can start a Video session but cannot use your iSight camera, you may need to click the video icon in the lower frame of the video window that opens to start video. If these tips do not help, try the following.
    (2) Be sure to quit Photo Booth before launching Skype. As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
    (3) Check whether the problem is application-specific or user-specific using the suggestions from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
    (4) If your only problem is with Skype in every user account you try, try this:
    • Quit Skype if it is open.
    • Delete your Skype preferences file:
     Finder / Go / Home / Library / Preferences / com.skype.skype.plist
    • Close those folders and launch Skype again to check for proper functioning.
    • When you get Skype working again after tossing your old .plist files, you will need to reset any preferences that you want to be different from the default values.
    (5) If you do not get the answers you need here, search or ask for help at the Skype Help. Skype offers a comprehensive help system, and they can give you specific help with all your Skype-specific problems.
Several links to Skype Video topics for Mac user are given in this post:

You can start with those if you are having difficulty finding Skype Help topics on your own.

  • Built-in iSight not recognized by MacBook

Hello. My iSight camera was working fine 3 weeks ago. I have not used it in any way other than with PhotoBooth. I don't Skype. I don't iChat. I've only used it to take photos of the interior of our apartment, with PhotoBooth. About a week ago, we began watching NetFlix movies on-line (wirelessly). Now, when I open PhotoBooth, the screen is black, and says "There is no connected camera." In System Profiler>USB, iSight isn't listed (I'm pretty sure it should be). I've tried all the fixes I've read on these boards-- to no avail. Help. Thank You.
    2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory

    You're most welcome.
The fact that it is working again is a good thing, but your solution may be a symptom of an intermittent hardware problem.
Cracked, loose, or improperly soldered internal connections can cause the sort of unexpected failure followed by unexpected return of proper function that you report.  Although you have corrected the problem now, if you have an intermittent hardware issue, vibration, even that from normal use, or changes in operating temperature can cause reoccurrence.
If you find future correction of the problem as hard and mysterious to remedy as it was this time, expect that you may have an intermittent hardware problem.  If the problem becomes annoying enough, ask your Apple-Authorized Service Provider to check out your symptoms.
Because such problems are not reliably repeatable, they can be difficult to find, so make a backup and expect to leave your Mac with the AASP for a while.  However, once found, your Apple service provider can usually correct the problem quickly.

  • WRT160NL Usb storage not recognized after firmware update

    Hi.
I've been using an AC powered hard disk in my router for a long time, until i found the new firmware (Ver.1.0.04 Build 2), but after the upgrade the storage didn't work any more. (i don't remember the firmware version it had)
In the storage tab, in the configuration page i can see the disk, i can create sharings but these are not found in the windows network. (i'm using windows 7)
the disk has been tested using FAT32 and NTFS (232.8GB)
do you have a solution for this problem? or should i return to the firmware version it had (the one i don't remember)...
is there another version to switch to?
    thanks for your help...
