Having finally setup my new Acer TimelineX i am now to the tweaking stage and stuck with the built in mic, the playback is awful, it crackles.  Any suggestions please ?
Cheers

  • After using apogee duet, mac's built in mic & logic's track headers for recording are not working properly.  How do I fix it?

    I use logic 9
After using apogee duet for mac, I was away from my home studio without the duet and wanted to record vocals via the internal microphone on my mac book pro.  (Obviously, I know it wouldn’t be the same quality.  I wanted to do it as a draft, because I had a melody in my head and wanted to record it so I could remember it later.)
After opening up a project I was unable to record audio.  I noticed the track headers had changed.  Sometimes the “record ready” button was missing.  But whether it was there or wasn’t, the same thing kept happening… After pressing the “record button” or the “record ready” button a window would pop up that said, “No input source selected!”  I tried to trouble shoot by configuring track header and by going to prefereces>audio>devices>core audio, and switched the “input device” to “built in microphone,” and things like that, but I still would get the same pop up window indicating “no input source selected.”   To be thorough, in preferences under “core audio,” I have selected universal track mode, 24 bit recording, and software monitoring.
Do I need to reset something?
If your recommendations help fix the immediate issue temporarily, how do I keep it from reverting back to the same problem if I feel like switching between the duet interface and the built in mic in the future?  How do I keep it permanently from this malfunction?  It seems like this is something simple that would be addressed.
Also, as I was trying to think of anything it could possibly be.  I wonder if it could be the driver I installed for an old m-box2 possibly causing an issue.  After getting my new mac book pro, I downloaded a driver for m-box2 (the second generation that came out in 2005 and used pro tools LE.)  I used the m-box on my previous computer and it worked well.  Since I purchased a new macbook, I tried to use it on my new computer, but since the m-box2 is a 32 bit system, it didn’t work very well, which is why I got the duet.  I don’t know if that could possibly be messing anything up.  If so, should I uninstall it somehow?
    Thanks

Ok, think this through... you've changed from a stereo source to a mono source.
The message reads: “No input source selected!”
On the track you're trying to record there is an Input section directly underneath the  I/O label. Click and hold to select the correct Input for that track.
Also, the project you opened was saved with the Duet's driver/interface parameters.. if you open the same project without the audio interface Logic will do it's best to pick I/O that's compatible but I've never seen any DAW do this perfectly.. it always takes a small amount of user input. Especially since you've changed from the Apogee to the internal mic.

  • Built in mic? where?

I heard the iMacs have a built in mic... where is it?

The hole on the left side is for the Ambient Light Sensor.
It automatically turns the brightness up or down, depending on the light level in the room.
Since you have now "found" the microphone and want to try it out, check out the speech recongnition built into the OS.

Apple's speech recognition software allows you to control your computer and applications using spoken commands. You can use spoken commands to open applications, choose menu items, email friends in your Address Book, and much more. A number of commands, or “speakable items,” are already created for you. You can also create your own commands and add them to the Speakable Items folder.
Use the Speech Recognition pane of Speech preferences to turn speech recognition on, set up how to signal your computer that you're speaking a command, create commands for applications, and open the Speakable Items folder.
When you turn on speech recognition, a round speech feedback window appears on your desktop. This window shows which key you need to press or keyword you need to speak to signal that you're about to speak a command. The pop-up menu at the bottom of the speech feedback window provides quick access to Speech preferences and the Speech Commands window.
If your computer has a built-in microphone, you can speak commands using the built-in microphone. If you have more than one microphone, speech recognition selects the one it uses in this order: external USB microphone, external analog microphone, built-in microphone."

  • Lion has killed my built-in mic for Facetime, but not for Quicktime recording or Skype.

After updating to Lion the built-in mic on my imac doesn't work properly, the person on the other end hears me very faintly. I can't turn it up anywhere. It works fine in Skype, and System Prefs levels are healthy when Facetime isn't running.
Please help solve this, it's very frustrating.

So...the Muted-Mic issue continued to happen. I also had a variation of it, where, the person on the other end of the call heard static/crackling noise.
The static noise issue (just like the muted-mic) went away as son as I plug in the head set on my iPhone 3g...Using the head-set the other end can hear me with out problems.
The likely culprit is the built-in mic. ( of-course it could be something else, but the mic is the most likely thing...it could be loose or something).
....So I take it in to the Apple Store (Genious Bar) Twice.
On my first visit they did not exchange it...Since the issue did not occur during a 1min test call he did...he asked me to take my phone back and see if it happens again.
...of course the issue happened again.
On my second visit, the Genious suggested that there might be a problem with the SIM.
...I was TOTLLY APPALLED by this response.... Read my original post on my problem, and you can probably infer that the SIM is a very unlikely source of the problem (...also, I'm an Cell Phone engineer for a large company for 8.5 years...so I know a thing or two about how cell phones work).
    I did not tell the genious I'm a Engineer ...Maybe I should've.
After trying to explain to the genious that his suggestion of changing the SIM was not a likely solution he finally agreed to exchange my phone...The phone is under warranty if they want to debug the phone swapping SIMs etc...they should do this on their own time...not mine!!!
(he changed the phone and the SIM!!).
So if you see this issue, hope you can get service without having to go back several times, and getting the run around before they exchange a defective unit.

  • Audio Recording Crackles / Pops / Stutters

    Hi All,
I didn't quite know under which category to put this post. Moderator, please feel free to re-assign it to the appropriate forum.
The title explains my situation pretty clearly. The details are that When I use the built-in mic in my web cam for things like Rosettastone (languages), or ScreenFlow (making screencast recordings), the audio always pops. Not just once and a while, either, but with almost every word picked up.
I'm using a UVC USB web cam (Rosewill RCM-3201V) plugged directly into my mini. Previously I had it plugged into the USB hub, thinking that may cause some irregularities, but plugging it directly into the mini didn't fix it either.
Any ideas what can be done to address this?

    Hi DaddyPaycheck,
As I mentioned, this is a UVC camera, which means it doesn't require drivers and is compatible with all operating systems. That being the case, I have not needed to install any drivers or software to run the web cam.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USBvideo_deviceclass
From other threads I have seen it appears that this might be a sample-rate issue, where the camera is providing a different sample rate than my Mini is expecting. But I have no idea where I would begin to find out if they are different, and then how to adjust them.

  • Built-in mic failure on my new iPhone 3G

Wondering if any one else has seen this issue:
For about 4 or 5 hours this past saturday, I had a one-way audio issue on all my phone calls; where I can hear them but they cannot hear me!
It occured on all incoming and outgoing calls during this 5 hour period.
BUT, while the phone was in this problem state, I discovered that if I used the headset, people could hear me just fine!
Then later that evening the problem went away without me doing anything special (I did not reset phone or anything).
The problem came back the next day for about an hour.
-So, has anyone else seen this?
-It hasn't been 30days since I purchased the phone, I guess i should be able to just walkin th estore and ask for a replacement...??

  • Audigy2 ZS produces crackling/popping noise if Media player is not started as the first prog

    Hello all!
I have had lots of problems installing my Audigy2 ZS Video Editor, but I have finally got it to work (at least under limited conditions).
When I start my laptop, I have to start Windows Media Player right away in order for the music to sound OK (I have the Audigy2 connected to a Pioneer receiver through a digital coax cable).
If I start any other program first (e.g., Microsoft Explorer, Outlook, Word, quicktime) sound from the soundcard is heavily contaminated with crackling, popping and just general noise. The only way to get it to work again is to reboot.
The same problem occurs if I start another media program e.g., Quicktime, winamp, (after having started Windows Media Player) that accesses the soundcard. The only way to get good sound again is to reboot and immediately start Microsoft Media Player.
I have tried lots of things including cleensweep, re-installation, driver update etc. etc...
What is the problem? Is there a cure? Can I adjust some settings to get it to work or is it a serious bug?
If anyone knows what may be the problem and how to solve it, please advise!!!
    Thanks!!

  • XFi Crackle, Pop, Distort

When i first got my new comp i installed the drivers that came with the soundcard. I had NO problems with crackle/pops for 3 months. Then i tried to use a mic one day and my card wouldn't pickup the mic what so ever. So i updated my drivers to the newest beta drivers. My mic worked, so i was happy for a few days. Then i noticed the crackle during anything with music. Games, or even just winamp by itself.
Uninstalling the beta drivers, and installing windows default drivers gives same deal, mic works, but with crackle trying to play music. Then i installed the?"[url="http://support.creative.com/Downloads/welcome.aspx#">Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi series Driver 2.5.0006[/url]" dated march 4/08, and back to square one. NO crackle but the mic is gone again.
Also games such as WoW or CoD4 showed zero distortion with music on. But Devil May Cry 4 did have distortion.
I also found that WITH the crackle if i software down the volume, and hardware up the volume the crackle almost completely goes away, except for the odd distortion coming from my sub still.
Edit:? My bad, i had orginal said i had an Nforce 4 mobo, but its actually a P35.

  • Having a problem with built in mic in iMac

It seems my built in mic is not working on my iMac 2.7 GHz with Intel Core 15.
    I am running OS X 10.9.3
The first option under Audio Devices is
"Built-in Microphone" which is set at 2 in/ 0 out, 44100.0 Hz and 2ch-24 bit Integer
Master volume is all the way to the right,  Value = 1 and dB = 12.  Mute and Thru are unchecked.
    The second option is
"Built-in Input" which is set at 2 in/ 0 out, 48000.0Hz and 2ch-32bit Float, Hardware rate Converter is set to Automatic. Master slider is unavailable, sliders 1 & 2 are all the way to the right both with Value = 1 and dB = 12.  Mute and Thru are unchecked.
The speakers are working fine.  I noticed the microphone issue when trying to use Facetime, iMovie and GarageBand.  During Facetime, I can hear my caller, but they cannot hear me.  In GarageBand, I am unable to record vocals.  In iMovie, I am unable to record any voiceovers.
I have tried plugging in an iRig mic as well, but it does not work on the iMac, but works fine on my iPad Air.
Can someone Please help me resolve this issue. I am sort of a newbie to Apple desktops.  I have googled until I am blue in the face, and everything suggested has not worked for me.  Apple support has no answers and I am at a loss.  I am begging! ! !

  • 1212M Crackling/Popping - New Drivers

I'm kind of cranky about this problem. Read on because I actually know exactly what the problem is (at least for most of us and only Creative/EMU can fix it).
    Background
I have a 1212M with the 0404 I/O card. It's a V1 that have had for five or six years. The quality of the sound is great, the features are great and the price is great. There's just one problem. From the day I got the board all those years ago I've had the crackling/popping problem that many, many other users also have.
The problem is not my motherboard, BIOS, other hardware, Windows or other applications. Over the years this EMU board has been in many different systems, many different configurations and the evolution from WinXP, Vista and now to Win7. The crackling problem has always been exactly the same. The problem is the board itself, not the system and not the configuration and I can prove it (read on).
Another thing that frustrates me is all the time that so many users have spent trying to troubleshoot this issue that is completely wasted since, for some of us, the problem is in the EMU hardware/drivers. That's not to say that there aren't some other crackling problems that are related to the system speed, interfering hardware or interfering software. There are actually two different problems that both have the same crackling symptom which makes all this quite confusing. I'll call them "System Related" and "EMU Hardware/Driver Related". If you're having the crackling symptom you should figure out which type of problem you have before spending hours troubleshooting, reinstalling, etc, etc, etc. Here's how:
    If your crackling problem:
    - Doesn't happen on startup. Your audio is fine and the problem only develops after a while. On my system it's between 60 and 90 minutes and resetting the card.
    - Starts with a few minor crackle/pops per second and gradually gets progressively worse over several minutes with nothing else changing in the system (ie not running new software or changing anything).
    - After a while (can be a long while) the crackling can actually go away again and you have clean audio. Then the crackling returns. Once again with no changes in system load in between.
    - You can make the crackling go away instantly and every time by simply resetting the clock on the card. There are several ways to do this. In Patchmix go to the System tab under Session Settings and switch the clock between internal/external (whatever you have it on, go to the other and back again). Another way is the change the ASIO Buffer Latency milliseconds in your host software's ASIO control panel.
If those four things are all true for you then you have the "EMU Hardware/Driver Related" type of crackling problem. Do not waste any time with all the well-meaning but misguided troubleshooting ideas posted on this and other forums. None of it will help.
If these four things aren't true on your system then by all means you should try all the troubleshooting steps because it's likely that you can resolve your crackling problem.
Here is what is happening with the "EMU Hardware/Driver Related" type of crackling problem. First, let me say that I know what the root of the problem is because I used to work for a company that developed high-end professional video/audio software for Windows PCs. We encountered this exact same problem when some our users started reporting it. It wasn't solely with Creative or EMU hardware because the problem can actually happen on a variety of PC audio cards where the hardware is slightly out of spec or malfunctioning and the software driver is not capable of correcting the problem.
Our most senior software engineers banged their heads against this problem for quite a while until they determined what was going wrong in our customer's PC audio hardware. The issue is that the clock on the card is drifting slightly which means it is going a little faster or slower than the current sample rate. That's why the problem only manifests after a while. It's also why the crackling goes away when you reset the clock. The fundamental issue is that the audio data coming from your PC is being written into a buffer. The data is written by the PC driver and read from the buffer by the card and then sent to the card's output. You can think of the buffer as a big circle of memory. There's a write pointer that writes one value of data and then increments one step and "180 degrees" opposite in the circle of memory is a read pointer that reads one value of data and then increments one step.
These two pointers never move at exactly the same speed. They are constantly slowing down or speeding up a little bit but over time on average they end up advancing at about the same rate. The problem is that when the clock on the card is drifting, the read pointer and write pointer will eventually cross over. That's why the this kind of crackling problem manifests only after a while because, depending on the drifting, it takes a while for the pointers to cross. It's also why the crackling is subtle at first and then gets progressively worse over time. Right when the pointers are overlapping the timing is still close. As one pointer starts to "lap" the other point more and more the crackling artifact gets progressively worse. That's also why the problem usually goes away again if you wait long enough. The pointers can actually get back in phase again for a short while! That's how I know exactly what the current problem is the 1212M board because it manifests with these precise characteristics. The old problem my former companies user's had even sounded exactly the same as the crackling my EMU 1212M has.
Once we understood the problem, in our next version we modified our software to use a larger buffer. This eliminated the problem for some of our customers whose hardware clock was only very slightly out spec. However, for other customers the problem remained, although by increasing the buffer size it made it take longer for the pointers to reach each other and the crackling to begin. This is the what I suspect EMU has done with the new Win7 beta drivers. With the new drivers my crackling takes longer to appear. In these forums we see reports from some long-time sufferers of the problem that the new driver fixed their problem and from others we hear that they are still having the problem.
Since we still had unhappy users of our video/audio application software, we kept working on the issue and eventually came up with a fix that solved the problem for all users and all audio hardware. It was hard to implement but this is what EMU/Creative needs to have their driver engineers do to actually fix the problem (short of replacing an enormous amount of hardware).
The problem can be solved in the driver (yes, my old company actually embedded our own low level generic driver in our application software). Since EMU/Creative is making their driver themselves they can just implement this fix there. The secret is for the driver to actually keep track of where the write and read pointers are and each time they get too close to each other it stretches or shrinks the next packet of data by averaging the audio samples in that packet to the exact size needed to put the pointers 180 degrees apart again. It then resets the pointers as it writes that new data. The data shrink or stretch prevents a single pop or click from happening when the pointers are reset to their correct positions. Frankly, this was hard to implement but it worked perfectly. We actually hired a consultant to figure this audio problem out who was a former Microsoft engineer who wrote the WDM kernal mode drivers.
EMU SUPPORT please let your product manager know that this is what is going on and that he should ask your contract driver engineers to implement this type of solution. Yes, it will cost more in development time (and hence $$$), but it will fix the issue once and for all and not just for this card. You can re-use the code in other drivers.
If you need specific help, I'll even connect you with the engineers that did it for a more detailed explanation (we sold our company years ago and the team has split up but I'm still in contact with most of them).

    Markran,
Thank you for the information. I will make sure that it gets routed to the correct people.

  • Satellite L300-2CL - built in mic stopped working

    Hello
When I bought this computer (sep-09) everything was working fine. Then in march (I hade it idle for awhile), my built in mic stopped working.
Everything eles is working fina, and I have scanned the web for solutions, and tried to install new drivers, unistall them, boots everything possible, disabel and rebooting, but at most I just get a static sound from my test recordings.
I am using win 7 home pre, but the issues started when I was using Vista. Now I am out of ideas, and my friends on Skype grows tired of not hearing me.
Is there anything I can do to get the mic work, or should I just buy a headset?
    Greatful for help
    Hugo

    Hi
Sounds a little bit like an mic hardware issue but you should also check the internal mic settings in control panel -> sound.
There you will see the Recording tab.
Here you should mark the internal mic and should check the properties.
Set all volume controllers to max.
Choose internal mic as standard device.
In Playback tab choose speakers -> properties.
There you will see the level tab. Here you should set the microphone to 100 and should check if its not disabled too.

  • No Sound from built-in mic recording to a basic track

I am not a garageband user in the past so please bear with me.
I want to record from the built-in mic and I did and there was a obvious record patten on the basic track.
BUT No Sound, I thought maybe the file was wrong I then recorded an itunes and the record patten was visible and I even tried raising the record level and the patten got higher. The recording level bars in the basic track were green and when I raised the volume there were occasions that they went red.
However both times No Sound when trying to playback.
I checked the speaker levels and raised them to maximum in both the GB and my computer.
The track volume constantly shows 0.00 dB-
Any thoughts as to why I cannot get the sound to playback.

I got it to work in Guitar track Midi.
    I was in real Instrument.
Any reason why there would be a difference that sound plays in Guitar Track and not in Real Instruments ?

  • Disabled built-in mic

Hi. I have a mac mini MC815BZ/A which has a built-in mic, but when I enter on garage band the program says that there are none "integrated MIDI in". Also, all the system doesn`t detect the presence of a integrated mic. But it's not all the problem: when I connect an external mic the system doesn't detect it. Is it possible that the hardware related to sound is broken? Or... Is it possible that the driver isn't working?

BDAqua. Thank you very much for your concern about my problem, but I just solved it! Or better, an Apple technician helped me. It was just a misunderstanding. There is no built-in mic in a mac mini, but an audio-in ("entrada de áudio") and and audio-out ("saída de áudio").
One cannot insert a simple microphone on the audio-in, but a mic with four stripes, like nokia's cellphones:
Once you connect such a phone on the audio-out hole, you'll be able to both listen and speak throught the headset.
After that, my "Applications> Utilities > Audio midi setup" showed a new section called "microfone integrado", i.e. integrated mic:
Hence, I was able to move "principal" to the right.
Besides that, I could not tet skype capturing my voice... But I think it's subject for a new topic.
Thank you very much for your help!
