Bully Tower

After many hours with the half brain dead "techs" of which say nothings wrong in this area, I'm looking to the forum for answers.  I live in northern Arizona, way north.  We have two towers here in town,  the closest tower other than those is in the grand canyon, 100 miles or more away.  The Tusayan, az (grand canyon) tower is overpowering all the towers here in this area.  I can stand on a hill overlooking the tower here in town and can only get 1x data and dropped calls.  Drive on 89 north and its hit and miss 1x to 3g.  Up till about two months ago all was good.  Data was 3g, no dropped calls.  Signal was sparce but dependable.  I dont know if they upped the power for the Tusayan tower or what but somethings wrong.  They sent me a antenna for my mifi, same thing, just 1x but good signal -54db.  I moved it all over the house and same thing.  Its now under the bed with -95db and have evdo with .54 meg speed.  Guess its hiding from the bully tower.  Any answers or ways to keep this tower off my devices.  Yes i have updated my prl's.  Note the time in the screen shots.  and the distance from page.

Hello,
Thanks for all those pictures.  Its easy to see what you are talking about and we can tell you have experience conducting site surveys.
Mixed signals from competing towers is a plausible explanation for your issues.  VZW or the local tower company might have made a tweak which helped someone else and ended up hurting you as a result.  That theory plays well into your description as you say that VZW is not noticing anything unusual on thier side.  Maybe what we should be asking is if anything has changed instead of if anything is broken or malfunctioning, although they might not be able to tell you that either.
One solution that comes to mind is a cantenna or directional antenna that would focus your MiFi's reception in the correct direction of the VZW tower.  Giving your MiFi a more narrow perspective should increase the chances that it will communicate with the correct tower.
Another possible solution would be to look into an amplifier system.  There are many that you can find for home and mobile use from online stores such as 3gstore.com and wilsonelectronics.com.  With an amplifier you should be able to boost your native 3G signal so that it doesnt matter which tower you connect to.  3G amplifiers have been around forever, there should be many to choose from depending on how much you want to invest.
Most antennas and amplifiers come with a trial period.  If they do not immediately resolve the problem then return them for a refund.  In case you have not already seen it, here is a great site that can walk you through the process of evaluating possible antenna and amplifier equiptment:

  • Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter to connect Win7 tower to iMac / Target Display Mode

I currently run Windows on bootcamp on the iMac (Mid-2011), although the tasks I perform (3D modelling, rendering and such) cause the Mac to get very hot, and as a result hae a slight burn mark on the LED LCD screen.
I am buying a Windows machine, and am to uninstall bootcamp and use the Mac purely for OSX, but use the iMac screen as a monitor for the tower using Target Display Mode. My issue is - the Windows 7 tower only has DVI output. And as I understand, the Mid-2011 iMac only supports Target Display Mode via a thunderbolt cable.
My question is - Will the Apple Mini DVI to DVI adapter allow me to connect the DVI-only tower to the iMac? Thanks in advance x

Oh, I should mention also that the iMac is the 27" model. Mid-2011 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7 with 4GB RAM and 1TB Harddrive. And ATI HD5450 1GB Graphics.

  • Cinema display prevents G4 tower from turning on

I moved my perfectly working computer to a new location and when the cinema display is connected to the G4 tower it does not turn on. If I disconnect the monitor, the machine powers nicely, and in fact I am using it now as an internet connection for my wireless laptop. If I then connect the display, the computer loses power. Any clue what's going on?

ADC displays have power control pins in the connector. Look closely in the connectors on the graphics board and display cable for bent pins.

  • How do I use my lenovo T400 as a second monitor for my tower PC?

I have a docking station with DVI  and I connected my tower with the laptop via the DVI cable. How do I go on?

so you have the lenovo t400 on the docking station and connecting the tower to the docking station via dvi?
i think the dvi on the docking station is only dvi out not in which means the laptop screen can not be used as a second screen.
    hopefully i got it right

  • Mac Tower Pro  10.8.5 keeps going into sleep mode

Purchased from Apple, refurbished 2012 Mac Tower Pro.  At the same time, purchased a new Dell U2713HM, 27" monitor.
Have been operating on this new system since about the first week of December 2013.
    Issue:
The computer has constantly gone into sleep mode after a few minutes of no activity.  I can have iTunes radio playing, but the system still goes into sleep mode.  As  I am typing and moving the curser, the machine stays awake.
This has caused much frustration because when it goes into auto sleep mode, it quits all programs that I am in, and when it does this, I lose all the work I had accomplished.  It litterally closes everything and goes to sleep in about 2-3 minutes of no activity.
BTW:  the computer and monitor have all its new OEM cables that came in the box, when I purchased the units.
    Solutions attempted:
System Preferences — Energy Saver:  computer sleep and display sleep set to "never"  and unclicked the box "Put hard disks to sleep when possible."
Dell settings:  Turned off all energy savers.
    Results:
    Nothing.  Problem persists.

I apologize for the angst.  The problem has cost too much money in lost time and material because when it would automatically shut down after a few minutes, all my work was lost.
I misunderstood the terms of the warranty.  Thank you for your input and patience.  Much appreciated.  For the benefit of others that experience this with a new Mac that auto shuts down.  Check the following:
    1.  Go to System Preferences.
    2.  Click on Security and Privacy.
    3.  Click on Advanced  (bottom right corner)
    4.  If the first line is checked (Log out after 5 minutes of inactivity);  uncheck it and then click OK button.
    5.  Be sure to click the lock before existing Security and Privacy.
Now the machine will cease shutting down programs to go into sleep mode as soon as machine is inactive for a few minutes.

  • I have a 30 inch monitor on my mac pro tower that just went black, what do I do to fix it?

I have a 30 inch monitor on my mac pro tower that just went black, how can I get it back on?

He's asking what are those things you are using, i.e., ...
What video card are you using?
What version of OSX are you using?
What model of mac pro are you using (e.g., 2010 Mac Pro is 5,1).
    And also,
    Try smc and pram reset.
And see if the monitor lites up if you boot in safe mode.
It is possible your monitor simply failed -- its power supply or something else.

  • 17" LCD Cinema Display does not work on G4 Tower with ATI 9000

    Hi,
I have a G4 Tower with the original AGP ATI Radeon 9000B video card. My friend gave me this unit just recently but not the original monitor. Well after he got his new 30" Cinema Display he gave me the original 17"LCD Cinema Display. I was so happy, plugged it into the card and fired up the CPU but nothing! just blank! It is not getting any power for the USB ports or anything. My buddy says the monitor was checked before I picked it up. I yanked the Video card out and put it back in, inside the CPU was clean as was the card, put it back together and still nothing. The VGA monitor I have is connected via adapter to the other input and works fine. I tried doing display settings and the Cinema is not even detected. Is the Video card fried on the digital side?
Do I need a new one?
Here is the info on the CPU:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    Serial Number: XB0120xxxxx
    Any help wold be appreciated.

    Hi MFG,
    Welcome to the discussions.
The G4 AGP Graphics model originally shipped with an ATY Rage 128 graphics card. The ATI Radeon 9000 graphics card that is installed in your G4 is not the original card.
The ATI Radeon 9000 comes with a native ADC port (which you are trying to use). This port is only fully functional if the computer is ADC enabled. Your model of G4 is, unfortunately, not ADC enabled.
You can confirm this by opening the computer and having a look at the AGP slot (where the graphics card is installed). In ADC enabled Macs, there is an extra slot at one end of the AGP slot to accomodate an "extra leg" that the ADC graphics cards (such as the ATI 9000) have. This extra leg supplies the power and USB feed. You'll probably find this extra leg with no slot for it to go into.
What this means is that you are not getting power and USB feed through the ADC port to your display.
If you want to get the 17" ADC Apple LCD display working off this card (it's definitely the LCD display and not the CRT display, please confirm), you will need to use a DVI to ADC adaptor such as this one:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD
and run it off the DVI output.
You can run your VGA screen at the same time (if you want to) off the ADC output by using this adaptor:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0117-ADCV
This will work off the ADC port because, although the ADC port is not getting USB or power feed, it's still getting the DVI feed (which is what this adaptor needs).
    Cheers!

  • Can I connect my old Studio Display to my MacPro Tower as a second monitor?

I'd like to hook my old Apple Studio Display (Clear body) to my MacPro tower and use it for my Pallets in PShop. Can anyone tell me the cable(s) I need to convert the studio display to the MacPro monitor port?

  • LCD Monitor with B&W G3 Tower

Hello, I am looking to replace my 17" Apple Studio Display CRT on my G3 B&W Tower with an LCD monitor. My questions are: 1) Will my computer (VGA port) accept any current LCD screens on the market, or do I have to stay with Apple's LCD monitors? 2) There are several Apple Studio LCD Displays offered on eBay. They mention DVI and ADC connections. How do I know which models will work with my B&W G3? Forgot to mention that I have upgraded the processor with a Sonnet G4 500Mhz. Thanks.

    Hi,
your B&W (like mine) should be equipped with a standard VGA output on your video card, which should accept any monitor with a VGA connection.
I tried a couple of LCD (a Samsung and a Hewlett Packard) which worked flawlessly and did not give me any problems.
I am not sure whether you can connect any of the current generation Apple flat screens due to the different interface, but you surely can take advantage of any VGA equipped LCD.
    cheers

  • I can't connect my camera to my Mac tower - final cut doesn't recognize the connection.

I have a Canon AH X1 video camera which uses the older 6 pin firewire - I have a 6 pin to 9 pin adapter, but when I connect the camera and go to Capture and Log, it doesn't recognize the camera is connected.  Even when I click NOW, it does nothing.  My camera output settings have been set by the manual for this type of connection, HD and downgrade OFF, or something like that (don't have the camera in front of me this moment).  Any ideas?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the quick response!  I have a smokin' Mac Tower - 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core, 10GB RAM, Mac OS 10.6.7.
I am running 6 pin firewire using a 9 pin adapter.  I have one internal hard drive - 999GB, formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - 914G are free.
Camera Settings - Playback STD - Comp out 1080i/480i
    HD Down Conversion - OFF
When I start up Final Cut Pro, it says
External A/V Unable to locate the following external devices:
    Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)
Your system configuration may have changed, or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.
Please check your connections and click "Check Again" , or click "Continue" to set external device detection to None.
Then, when I go to Log and Capture, I get:
Unable to initialize video deck.  You may still log offline clips or use Capture Now.
Beneath that, "Initializing Device Control..." stays up and frozen.
THEN, if I click OK and Capture NOW, I get a quick flash of a screen that disappears, and nothing happens.
    Thanks in advance...

  • Kernel Panic on Ancient G4 Tower

Kernel Panic on Ancient G4 Mirror Front Tower (PowerMac I believe). I'm trying to wipe my old G4 to sell, but moved some files I shouldn't have and restarted and now I'm stuck in a kernel panic. I've copied all my files over already so I'm okay with erasing the drive. I have no startup CD, but I do have a Snow Leopard CD that I bought for my iMac. I think I'm in an earlier version of OSX though (10.3 or earlier). I just want to be able to tell someone the drive is functional. Any ideas? Thanks!

The 10.6 installer disk is too new for any PowerMac.
Unfortunately kernel panics can be due to bad RAM, or bad peripherals, bad directory, or the wrong system installed.
Your best bet is to bring the machine into a Mac usergroup and ask if anyone has the installation disks for it.
The 10.4.6 retail installer if you can find it should help.

  • Can't unmount an internal disk that I installed in my tower

Years ago, I added a supplemental internal hard drive (Maxtor) to increase my storage capacity. It continues to work fine. But...
I'd like to be able to do maintenance on it (verify the directory, make any repairs, etc.), and for that, I need to be able to unmount this disk.
Note: there is no eject icon next to the disk's name in my Finder window.
I always get the error message that the volume could not be unmounted, and I've tried to unmount it several ways:
    - Used Terminal to try to unmount
    - Used Disk Utility to try to verify &/or repair
    - Started up with a bootable clone and tried
    - Started up with a bootable Disk Warrior CD and tried
    - Tried to reformat/erase the disk (couldn't)
I have backed up to this drive, using "erase & copy files" (from a sparse image backup), and that worked, so apparently it didn't need to unmount the disk to do that. But I can't copy my computer over to my laptop (in Target Disk Mode), apparently due to this problem. Sigh.
Disk Utility tells me to be sure all folders, files, etc. are not in use on this disk, and then maybe it will unmount. But I see nothing in use or open.
NOTE: I have Sys 9 installed on that volume. For a while, I thought maybe OS X somehow keeps a file open that's related to OS 9 (like maybe sort of having it "stand by" in case Classic needs to load when I try to open an old file or something). But that doesn't seem to be the case after all, since I've booted from a bootable clone on a different, external drive (meaning my normal boot drive is not loaded), and the problem persists. But wait, maybe the clone I've booted from is somehow activating the OS 9 disk in that way, still. But wait, that can't be it, since I've booted from Disk Warrior CD and the problem persists.
Shouldn't I be able to do maintenance on that additionally installed internal disk? And doesn't it have to unmount for that? But how can I get it to unmount? If there is a directory problem causing this, how can I repair the directory to resolve the unmounting problem, if it won't unmunt to accept the repairs? And why isn't there a way to just erase the disk and start over? I guess it has to be unmounted first, fir ANYthing. But HOW??
    Many thanks.

    Hi, Larry.
You wrote: "I always get the error message that the volume could not be unmounted"This implies that you have either:
    a. A file open that is saved on that disk.
    b. An application or background process running that was either launched from that disk or is using a file on that disk.
    c. A Startup Item or Login Item is either being launched from that disk or using a file on that disk, akin to points (a) and (b). See my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ.
Try restarting in Safe Mode and after logging in, launch Disk Utility.
    Good luck!

  • Slow booting Tower and AIO

Both of my Beige G3's are slow booting eg black screen for approx two minutes before they hit the grey screen then everything seems to run normally. Figured it was a problem with memory testing so turned it off in the control panel but that changed nothing. Both have 768MB of PC100 memory.
Both are running OS 9.2, the All-in-one has had a cpu swap to a Sonnet G4 500MHZ zif card with factory jumper positions while the Tower has an Apple G3 450MHZ zif card at 70MHZ system bus. Both had the cuda resets and both have new 7200 rpm hard drives with fresh system installations.
The AIO has also been partitioned and has OSX and OS 9.2 on separate partitions with the X partition being 7.5 GB in the first 8 GB of disk space. The AIO is using it's built in video with a 4MB card to bump it up to 6MB of VRAM.
The tower only has the main partition with 9.2 and a scratch disk for PS. The tower is running an ATI Radeon 7000 mac edition video card.
Oh and they have also had brand new PRAM batteries installed so I'm stumped at this point as to what it is or is this normal for both?
    Kevin

What version of OSX are you running?
I had a similar issue with my Beige G3 minitower (G3/500 upgrade; 768MB RAM; 80 + 120G Maxtor 7200 rpm drives; ATI Radeon 9200) with 10.2.8; we called it "55 seconds of midnight." However, mine would not show the gray apple screen. After just under a minute, the monitor would come up and be about 2/3 of the way through the progress bar. Other than that, teh computer ran fine.
There are a couple of issues at play. The Beige G3 ALWAYS boots initially to a screen res of 640x480, then switches to the user-selected res after the prefs load. If the monitor or video card cannot support 640x480, you get black until your user prefs load.
Some have reported this after replacing the original hard drive. Others say it happens when they installed a PCI video card. You've done both.
Try temporarily removing RAM until you have LESS than 192MB installed and see if it gets better. If it does, then this Apple article applies:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25564
The bottom line for me is that it's a Jaguar problem. When I installed Panther via XPostFacto v3.1, the problem went away. The old beast runs under Panther much better than it did under Jag.
