Bump Power Cord, Computer Goes Black

So I am having a very strange problem that I hope someone can help me with. Every time I touch/bump the end of the power cord (the connector? aka the part that goes into the iBook) my computer screen goes black. All my programs keep running and itunes keeps playing, I just get a black screen. I then just close my laptop, open it, and everything works fine again. This problem literally happens every time I touch the connector part of the power cord though. Anyone know what that problem is? Thanks so much!
P.S. - I have already tried reseting the PMU.

Hey Brandon,
Forgive me for my ignorance, but what do you mean which iBook we are dealing with here? >Like what more detailed information are you requesting besides it being an iBook G4, so I know specifically what to tell you.
So if you look here, in the section "iBook G4":
http://www.lowendmac.com/powerbooks.html
You'll see there were 10 different iBook G4 models.
Four 12" models:
# 12": G4/800, G4/1 GHz (2003), G4/1.2 GHz (2004), G4/1.33 GHz (2005)
and 6 14" models:
# 14": G4/900, G4/1 GHz (2003), G4/1 GHz, 1.2 GHz (2004), G4/1.33 GHz, G4/1.42 GHz (2005)
The information is on a bar coded strip under the keyboard.
While there are many similarities from model to model there are also differences, especially where cables are located.
In general I would look at the DC in board since that is very prone to damage. There is a know weakness in the inverter cable which we have seen fail right at the right hinge point (as you look at the iBook).
This is relatively easy to diagnose since you can still see the screen working if you use a flashlight.

  • Edge 540 model : when I connect/disconnect AC power cord, screen goes dark

For the past few days, everytime I connect the power cord, the screen goes dark for a second. The same thing happens when I disconnect the power cord. Can someone help me find out what is wrong with it? Is it a hardware issue or is it just a momentary glitch (It just started happening yesterday)?
My laptop is brand new so I can use the warranty if i have to.
    OS: Win 8
    Thank you.

this is a normal behaviour it happens all the time. It is your refresh rate changing between different power setting. Set the screen refresh rate at 60 hz for both battery and with ac adapter connected this should prevent the momentary blanking of the lcd.

  • MacBook Pro goes out of sleep when unplugging the the power cord

When my MacBook Pro 13'' is in sleep-mode with the lid down and with the power cord plugged in,
if you the unplug the power cord the computer goes out of sleep-mode.
The same when it is in sleep-mode without the power cord, it goes out of sleep
when the cord is replugged in, although the lid is still down.
Anyone who have had the same problem?

I'm having the same issue!  I took it to the Apple store, they tested it all out and none of the techs were able to fix it or heard of the issue before.
They told me to reinstall OSx which I did and same issue.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Screen goes black when coming out of screen saver. HP Pavilion,p7-1414 desktop, windows 8

the monitor shows the windows 8 screen with the apps, then the screen saver will come on. Then when I try to bring it out of the screen saver mode the screen goes black and nothing I do will get it to go back to the windows 8 screen. Then the mouse pointer will disappear. So I end up having to shut down the computer using the power button. If I have the screen set up for the old style windows 7 and it goes into the screen saver and I bring it back there's no problem.

    Hello fleamarketlady,
Your computer goes black when it comes out of sleep mode some times.
Make sure that you are only using one cable to connect the monitor to the computer.
Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.
This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.
Here is a link to command prompt.
When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.
If you are still having the problem you can perform a system refresh.
This will uninstall windows 8 and reinstall it without affecting your personal information.
Here is a link that will walk you through the steps for a refresh.
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • IBook screen goes black after unplugging power cord

I originally posted this topic in the wrong discussion group for iMac G4, the computer is actually an iBook G4.
My wife's iBook bought about 2 years ago shows battery 100 percent charged. But when she unplugs the power cord the screen goes black. Can not be restarted until she plugs in the power cord. It seems like it might be the battery. She got extra batteries when she bought it. Is there a way to tell if it is the battery before having to replace it?

Did you check on the status of your battery using "About this Mac" under the Apple on the menu bar? Click on "More Info..." and select Power under Hardware. It will tell you capacity and cycle count.
You may have a dead battery.

  • Why does my mac book pro screen go black when it goes to sleep and then will not light up again unless I unplug the power cord

When I either leave my mac book pro open, but idle long enough for it to go to sleep or close the top and put it to sleep, the only way to light up the screen again is to diconnect the mag. connect power cord. Any ideas why and/or how to  correct this problem?

So this is what I got when I took my computer into the apple store to have it diagnosed.
After the apple technician performced several tests, the only thing that fixed the issue was an SMC reset. Based on this he figures it is probably a software or firmware issue that is going on. He is a little concerend how ever that the fans of the comupter don't reach maximal rpm when the computer is displaying the issue. So he recorded the problem, and told me to just perform the SMC reset as needed for the next couple months and wait for a new update from apple. If the issue persists I am to go back to the apple store and they will take the appropriate steps.
He said an SMC reset doesn't hurt the computer in any way, so its safe to do. I am gonna contact blizzard and let them know about the issue as well because if it is software, it could be their game (Diablo 3) that is causing the issue as well. If I hear of anything new i will let you know. So get on the blizzard form and let them know of the issue to fix the problem faster.
    Thanks for your help,

New (3mo) macbook air screen goes black and sometimes won't come back on after I unplug it from the power cord.  Any ideas why it is doing this? Sometimes I have to hold power button for 10 seconds for it to shut off then back on. Sometimes holding the power button for a second is enough for it to come back on.

I took it to the Genius Bar, and they identified it as a hardware issue. Just got it back today. Parts replaced were:
620-5629 Display Module — Symptom: Distored/blurred/focus video issue
605-3284 Top Case with Keyboard — Symptom: specific key(s) do not work
So far so good. I'd suggest taking it in and not trying to work around it — it's a rare hardware issue (given the number of threads about it) and should be replaced.

    @LisaMG ,
Hello and welcome to the HP support forums.  Lets see what we can do to help you with your black screen issue.
When posting here if at all possible please provide your key system .
You have your model and what version of Windows.  If possible could you post back with the product number and which version of windows 7.  Home, professional, Ultimate.  and any service packs that have been installed.
Now here is a link that should help you out in finding what the problem may be and possible ways to solve the issue.

Things you may want to try as well. When you start your computer move the angle of the screen and see if it still has the problem.  If the problem goes away you are looking at a cable or connection issue.
If the problem stays the same then you may be looking at a driver or motherboard issue.
Here is a link to a video that may be of some help as well.

  • My laptop screen goes black when i plug in an Hdmi cord

Initially I had both my tv and computer off. I connected the dvi to the tv and the hdmi to the laptop and turned them both on. I had no issue using my laptop as i tried to sync the computer to the TV. However i must have accidentally hit something in the graphics options as my laptop screen went black. I unplugged the hdmi cord from my laptop and the screen came back up. But now for some reason everytime i plug in the hdmi cord to the laptop the screen goes black. When i take it out it the screen comes back up. Did i change something that is causing this to happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have pretty much the same exact problem and setup as DaveA1.  I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop C55T-A5123 which I just purchased a few months ago and when I connect my laptop to my SONY TV via the HDMI cable the screen on my laptop goes black and the TV says no signal.  It was working just fine up until about a week ago when I was watching a movie through my VLC player and then the screen flickered a couple times then video went completely out and I've never been able to get it to come back even once.
Here's the specs on my laptop:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114907
So far I have tried on two different TVs, swapped HDMI cables which work on my other HDMI devices, system restore and attempted to update various different drivers.  I am curious to find out if Dave was able to find a solution to his problem.

  • Apple Mail in repair- Send computer and power cord?

MY MBP battery has needed to be replaced for a couple of months now and I have finally decided to get it fixed. I called Apple and am getting the box to mail my computer. On the phone I was told to send both my computer and my power cord. Why is this? My battery has been in the "replace now" condition for a while, so long that I've gone through multiple chargers. The only charger I have currently is a 3rd party one I bought because the Apple ones are too expensive. Let me reiterate: My computer's battery needed to be replaced BEFORE I began using the 3rd party charger. Is this going to cause a problem with getting my computer fixed?
    Thanks!

Is this going to cause a problem with getting my computer fixed?
Yes, unless you send both the computer and the power adapter you can expect a delay. A Mac's charging system is comprised of its battery, the power adapter, DC-in board, and related connections. All are required to ensure a proper repair. "Replace now" means exactly what it says and must not be deferred.
The only charger I have currently is a 3rd party one I bought because the Apple ones are too expensive.
You may find your counterfeit power adapter to be very expensive.

without more information, I assume you mean a blackout from sleep issue.
Go to system preferences > energy settings > raise the "turn display off" setting up to as needed, say 5 mins. or 10 mins.
    AND ...
unchecked the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in both the battery and power adapter tabs.
    test it and check back

there are only 2 statistical probabilities of both charger blocks (NOT the cord as you report) going at the same time.
and what "goes" is one of the 2 capacitors inside them.
A: bad power on your outlet (more likely)
B; also likely is a defective IO board in your macbook causing the charger blocks to go kaput

  • Black screen when plug the power cord

    Hi..
    yesterday I bought a new laptop : hp 15-r138
When I  plug the power cord - or unplug it .. the screen turn black for a second and then goes back to normal ..
    Is this OK  ?
    Thanks

I've heard of this. Where when you do the update, if you let the screen go dim, or something you can't get it back because you can't see anything due to those controls running in the background at this stage of installation. I'm pretty  sure you need to plug it into an external monitor to get it back maybe?
