Bumps on the road to systemd --no inittab [solved]

Hey guys,
I felt comfortable enough with the systemd wiki instructions to uninstall initscripts, but when I rebooted, the system complained that there was no inittab, and asked for a runlevel. I tried to enable multi-user.service, and a couple other things, but was only able to boot when I put the init=/path/to/systemd line back in menu.1st.
I'd like to boot right into runlevel 5--I created the example xinit.service from the wiki page, and it worked, but anyway-- I'm going to stop now and hope I'm missing something obvious. If necessary I'll update this post with something more coherent in the morning.
thanks

I think there's a symlink from init to systemd needed somewhere, but having not done that I'm not sure how you'd get that, its in some systemd-related package or other.

So this afternoon I went into the employment place that lets you accsess resources, workshops, computers, counsellers, all to help you atain employment a great place when you r in need. Earlier I was contacted
by a employer telling me all future communication with him will be done via a very popular social networking website (FB). So I came down to the employment office to use there computers to set up a time for a interview and the website
was blocked on their server so......
I need to know the easiest, fastest, unobtrusive way to get on the site thats blocked when I don't have admin controls, I know its possible. I tried then started to believe there has to be a better way. Off the hop I
thought second operrating system on the computer would that do it being that their on a network domain? Access another computer remotely somehow? This is extremly anoying. All my atempts to find the answer proved unsuccessful.
The job is a once in a lifetime kind of thing that I have always wanted but neverknew it. Does someone out there have the intellect to teach an able mind how to better himself so he can continue toward greatness??????
p.s Usually I would observe the rules set out and adheer to them but when an Employment Agency wouldn't let me on a social networking website while they spout off about how networking is one of the the most important aspects in finding
a JOB I knew this was one of those rules that are meant to be broken.

You have erroneously posted this question in a user forum dedicated to Microsoft Project Server, an enterprise project management application.  I would recommend that you find a more relevant forum for your post, such as an Internet Explorer or Windows

  • End of the road for my Color Classic???

Greetings. Lifelong Mac user here who, in the wake of Jobs’ passing, retrieved my Color Classic from the attic, thinking it would surely boot right up. It worked as recently as maybe 4-5 years ago, but all attempts over the past month to successfully boot it up have been in vain. After one purchase from Radio Shack and three from eBay, I’m 99 percent done throwing any more money at it. But I’d like to see if any of you could maybe help me out before I give up the ghost. I don’t have long, since I’ll need to return the internal HD I just bought off eBay soon if I want a refund. Here’s the rundown:
** Initially, it would boot up without the startup chime, show a grey screen for a minute or two (no icons at all), then give the eight-tone chimes of death.
** Buying a new PRAM battery led to it giving the startup chime and showing the smiling Mac, but that would give way to the flashing question mark over the floppy icon. I tried resetting PRAM, which did lead to the three successive startup chimes, but still got the question mark afterward.
** Next thing I did was buy a complete set of 7.1 discs off eBay. Using either the Disk Tools disc or the Install Me First disc, I would get the startup chime and smiling Mac, but then I couldn’t get past this message: “This startup disk will not work with this Macintosh. Use the latest installer to update this disk for this model.” For some reason, the mouse wouldn’t work when doing this, so I’d have to power off with the main switch and then eject the floppy with a paper clip. I would later learn that these discs apparently wouldn’t work on the CC because of a missing System Enabler.
** Next step: buying 7.6 Disk Tools discs off eBay. This time, the startup chime and happy Mac gave way to a sad Mac icon, a "0000000F / 00000066" error message and four-tone chimes of death. That led me to believe my factory HD was bad, sooooo …
** I bought an internal HD off eBay with 7.5 already installed on it. I had high hopes that this would finally do the trick. The heavens would open up and I would see the desktop. But ... after the swap, I was greeted once again with the flashing question mark. I disconnected and reattached the data and power cables to the HD three times, but to no avail. I tried booting off the 7.6 Disk Tools with this new HD, but got the sad Mac / "0000000F / 00000066" sequence once more. I tried booting off the 7.6 Disk Tools with no HD attached and got the same thing. This was the most depressing night of all.
** Today, with the new HD installed, I tried booting off of old 7.0.1 and 7.1 startup floppies my dad made back in the day -- and one or both of them actually progresses past the smiling Mac to the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen. But then, the "use the latest installer" screen takes over.
So this is where things stand. I'm holding out hope that I can having a working CC without spending any more money, but I'm not optimistic. Tonight I might trying washing the logic board in the dishwasher, as well as booting with the logic board disconnected and then pushing it in shortly after the startup chime (which I had tried with the factory HD without success).
Any thoughts? Ideas? Or should I call it a day, put it back on the side mantle in my living room, and go the Macquarium (or MacAntFarm) route down the road? Thanks in advance for your help!

The Color Classic is pretty straight forward to work on because the motherboard is just a matter of pulling it out.
But I don't think it's a bad motherboard so that is the good news. Sounds like the original hard drive died but before you toss it try seeing if it is just a matter of the heads being stuck. Take it in hand and gently swish it back and forth a few times to see if it that will unstick the heads. If you had a clean room I would say open the drive and gently turn the platters than zip it back up and see if it will work.
The "new' hard drive you bought sounds like it is pooched as those clicking sounds are usually an indication of a bad drive so return it ASAP for a working one or a refund. But just in case if you look at your old hard drive does it have terminators on it, they will look like two long black strips with multiple prongs attaching them to the motherboard of the hard drive. Now look at the new one, does it have any or a place for them? Though my memory is foggy on SCSI drives but that 700 might have a jumper instead but that could be wrong.
In terms of the OS, you can run System 8 on it. But you must buy the Apple release version for all Macs which comes with a floppy disk to boot your CC as well as a CD with the system SW on it. The CD is white but you will need a SCSI CD drive to install the sw. The error messages tell me that those disks are the wrong ones and not something wrong with your CC.
Now if you were into experimenting..... the following motherboards from other compact Macs will work in your CC.
The motherboard from the LC 525 is a straight swap in and even the ports on the board mate up with the holes on the rear cover. The LC 550 as well, which was actually the motherboard that the CC II used.
The motherboard from the LC 575 will also work and that adds a 68040 cpu into the mix plus the upgrade to 72 pin simms which allows you to add up to 128mb of ram with a modification to the case of the CC. The two other boards I mentioned also take 72 pin simms so you can bump up your CC from 10mb to 32mb.
I wrote a short page on my experiments here, http://www.kevinomura.com/macs/colorclassic/index.html .
In any event I think it's just your hard drive that is the problem since your video sounds good, don't toss that CC as there are still collectors out there looking for them.
On other thought, since the hard drive is on a caddy with a zif socket it's possible that some of the pins have a bit of corrosion on them. Check the one's on the hard drive side and see if they look clean, if not clean them. on the computer side that will be tougher since it's deep in the case but a few insertions of the drive might be enough to knock some of the corrosion off and make a better contact.

Hello mlazaretti. Vacation time is awesome. (Especially a road trip!) Since you will be going out for two weeks, you never know if having extra data may come in handy. I highly recommend switching to the next tier up so this way you have more data. This way it is only $10.00 more versus $15.00, and you dont have to worry about overages. Then change back at the start of the next billing cycle.
If you need help making this change let us know! Have a safe trip!

  • Cannot send mail on the road

I am on the road and in some cases have to pay for internet privileges. I can receive mail and surf the internet with Safari. But I cannot send any mail and get the error message. The clerk at the motel here says to change the outgoing mail server to their server provider. But nothing good happens for me when I do that and restart. I tried to repair permissions and restarted several times.
The problems always seem to take place on locked WiFi. Open WiFi like Panera Bread I can access and send mail usually with no problem as well at the occasional open WiFi you run across from time to time.

Most if not all internet service providers used for connecting to the internet now block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP) on Port 25 which is the default port used for SMTP servers.
Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only that is outside of their network on Port 25 but some ISPs block its use regardless.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain and to have better control over customers that violate the ISP's terms of use in regards to sending email.
You can try changing the server port for the SMTP server from 25 to 587 and if this doesn't work, your only option is adding the ISP's SMTP server in Mail as an available SMTP server to choose from to be used to send messages with an email account not provided by that ISP. If this isn't allowed or doesn't work either, your only other option is sending messages via webmail access using a browser which doesn't use an SMTP server to send messages.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your email account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below. Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
In my experience when staying at a hotel that provides free wired and/or wireless internet access, after entering the password for access provided at the front desk when checking in, I don't have problems sending messages with my .Mac account and .Mac's authenticated SMTP server which I now use as my primary personal email account. The last hotel I stayed in which was out of state happened to use the same ISP that I use at home but this was the first and only time I've come across this.
Basically it is up to the internet service provider being used to connect to the internet at the time. Some ISPs have identical restrictions in regard to using an SMTP server that is outside of their network but some are different. Since hotels/motels that provide free internet access can't expect their customers to have the same ISP and depending on the hotel/motel have business travelers that need access to sending email with their business email account using an email client such as Mail that requires using an SMTP server that is not provided by the ISP, this should be a no-brainer for the hotel and the hotel's ISP but we can thank spammers for these problems.

  • Porting Keynote for ultra-portable shows on the road

I am starting this thread to discuss questions of how to leverage Keynote and iCloud to deliver presentations while on-the-road with limited access to hardware. To wit:
As you can see from the listings below, I have access to useful hardware and software. I am writing this to seek advice on how to leverage these tools to give business (and personal) presentations while I'm on-the-road and may (or may not) be carrying hardware with me. If I'm forced to travel light, I was wondering if simply taking a thumb drive and/or using my iCloud account may be enough.
I work for a small construction business that does projects in eight surrounding counties. I work as a "Producer", which means I'm both an office manager (writing up contracts and job estimates, arranging business with customers, contractors and suppliers over-the-phone) and a project manager (working with those same business contacts in-person on remote project sites). I am also applying for work outside of our business, and want to be able to use visual aids if/when necessary to illustrate what I do during an interview.
I recently started taking a Lynda.com course on "Setting Up Your Mobile Office to Work from Anywhere", and it got me to thinking about how I could use iCloud and Apple's iWork apps to create business presentations that could be played in a variety of portable scenarios. My goal is to be able to travel light and still be able to make presentations to individuals or groups.
MY CURRENT PERSONAL/BUSINESS HARDWARE & SOFTWARE
iMac 13,1 : late-2012 slimline model, 2.9 GHz Core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB hard disk, USB SuperDrive
    MacOS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
    iLife 2011 (including iPhoto 9.2.3)
iWork 2009 (including Keynote 5.3, Pages 4.3, and Numbers 2.3)
    Microsoft Office 2011: Mac
Final Cut Studio 3, including Final Cut Pro 7
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 8
    iCloud account, free-tier service
    DSL high-speed connection to internet
Have been shooting digital photos since November, 2001; manages iPhoto library of over 52,000 images
    OTHER HARDWARE AVAILABLE
white MacBook 2006 vintage, 1.83 GHz Intel processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB hard disk, SuperDrive, MacOS 10.6.8, iLife 2011, iWork 2009, Microsoft Office 2011 (MacBook is not my machine; used by someone else in my office. This computer has battery issues; it must be plugged into AC power.)
Epson EX7200 projector, with USB thumb-drive port (for JPEG presentations), VGA port, and HDMI port.
Scenario #1: If I prepared a Keynote presentation on my iMac and transferred it via WiFi or thumb drive to the old MacBook, do I need to copy just a single Keynote file over and that's it? No attached files or folders with files in them?
Scenario #2: I have successfully, in the past, used the Epson projector and a thumb drive loaded with photos and also a USB camera card reader with an SD card attached to show simple JPEG photo slideshows. If I wanted to just use the Epson's USB port to show Keynote slideshows, they would have to be stored in folders as JPEG files. How easy is this to prepare with Keynote? Are there any pointers available on designing a useful workflow for preparing such slideshows without a lot of fuss?
Scenario #3: Forget the projector; too much bulk. If I had just a small iOS device like an iPod touch, and I wanted to plug into someone else's projector (or if I wanted to just show a slideshow of images to one person with no projector) what do I need to be prepared for, hardware-wise? What do I need to do with Keynote, both on the iMac for production and on the iOS device to make it look right?
Scenario #4: Let's say I'm going to carry everything on a USB thumb drive as a backup. What is the best way to set it up to play on someone else's hardware? (I assume three tiers of compatibility: I do network with Mac/iOS users, so Tier #1 would be Apple compatibility with Keynote. Tier #2 would be general compatibility with Microsoft Office 2003/4 for pre-XML file formats. I guess that Tier #3 would be general-purpose PDF files, or maybe the JPEG file approach with thumb drive ports on projectors.) If I'm doing Tier #1 and I'm plugging my thumb drive into someone else's MacBook, are there any pointers to avoid font conflicts or other issues? If I'm doing Tier #1 and I'm borrowing someone else's iPad to show a slideshow, how do I get the files off of a thumb drive to show on the iPad?
Scenario #5: ** iCloud ** Let's say I'm traveling VERY light, and I want to give a presentation that's stored on my Apple iCloud account. How can I organize files and folders so that Tier #1, #2 and #3 files are available (assuming I have an internet connection) so I can play a presentation off someone else's hardware, be it a tablet or laptop. Is there anything I should know about how to prepare this and how to reliably be able to log-in and access my iCloud files? Are my iWork 2009 apps going to function in preparing and saving presentation files with my iCloud account?
Scenario #6: Scenario #6 is Scenario #5, but substituting another service instead of iCloud, like maybe Google Drive. Is there any way to set up an account with files so I can reliably be able to access said files for a presentation?

This is a great reminder. I too labor over my slides, sometimes way too much labor and not enough on the presentation. This is also a reminder to check out your venue BEFORE you arrive. Talk to the tech in charge if at all possible and tell him/her the system your bringing and ask if they can accommodate your requirements. I am giving 4 classes for adult continuing education at a local high school. I've had to bring my own flat screen TV because their projector was sub-par and did nothing for my slides.
Best practice if it is feasible and reasonable to go to the venue and check it out days before your presentation.
For the amount of work we put into our slides, we deserve for them to be shown at the best possible resolution.
    Thanks again for the reminder.

  • How to copy my data as an extra user on another machine while on the road?

    Hi,
Am going on the road for a while, but do not want to bring my valuable MacBook Pro. So I copied my home-directory to the old iBook of my mother as an extra user and I copied her stuff to mine, using SilverKeeper from LaCie, the same software I use to make back-ups with.
But apparently it is not that simple. I can login as the other user on the respective computers and all the data is there, but the system does not know that the data is actually linked to the respective users. I get errors that I don't have the priviliges to access that data.
I need to do something extra to tell the machine that that new user I created is the same as the one who owns the data, but what? Something scary in NetInfo Manager? Could you hold my hand by pointing me to or writing me some instructions?
Surprisingly, no issues similar to mine in the first 100 postings I saw in this forum...
It goes without saying that in a few weeks I want to synchronise the machines again and all should work as before.
Thank you very much in advance!

From an administrator account, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chown -R username
where username is the short name of the account you created. Next, drag the home folder into the Terminal window, press Enter, and provide your password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while the password is being typed. Before pressing Enter, ensure that there are no extraneous characters on the line.

Is there a (relatively simple) way to skip tracks with an iPod touch 5th gen using a physical button? I'm aware songs can be skipped on-screen without unlocking the iPod, but I'm looking for a method that doesn't require taking my eyes off the road while driving. For that reason, I'm also not interested in adding in headphones or additional devices that have the desired button functions. Going both forward and back would be great but I would be pleased just to have a "sight-free" way to go forward.
I've seen some mention here and there about ways to maybe change it so the volume buttons change tracks and holding the volume buttons changes the volume... but I don't know what's involved in that or if its even possible/recommended for a new 5th gen iPod. I think its a great device but its sadly lacking in music oriented functions and features... which is disappointing since music is why most people would bother getting one instead of some other "iDevice" :/

Given that you cannot do what you have asked for, perhaps you simply need to find another solution to your root problem.
Presumably, you want to skip to the next track because you don't want to hear the current one, and that is because...
    You don't like it.
You've heard it recently and don't want to hear it now.
Simply don't want to hear it at this time.
For problem number 1. Don't put it on the iPod in the first place. (I know, obvious answer!)
For problem number 2. How about playing from a Smart Playlist (initially created in your iTunes Library) which has only songs you've not played recently?
For problem number 3. Hhhmmm! Create alternative Playlists for use in the car.
As for going back to the start of the "now playing" track.... Well, if your Playlist has only songs that you really, really want to hear, then you'll be looking forward to that rather go back to the beginning of the current song.
I'm not trying to be prescriptive, just giving you food for thought.
(They are all cheaper options than buying a car which can control the iPod from the steering wheel.)

When traveling and connected to the internet with a different ISP that is not the same ISP used when connected to the internet at home, it depends on the ISP's requirement when using an SMTP server not provided by the ISP.
If the SMTP server used when connected to the internet at home is authenticated, sometimes changing the authentication to None for the SMTP server is all that is required and then switching back to authentication for the SMTP server when returning home.
When connected to the internet at a Hotel or via any paid or free internet access point, you need to check with the Hotel front desk or with their ISP regarding their restrictions when using an SMTP server not provided by the ISP. For some internet providers, it may require setting up and using their SMTP server to send messages with your email account or accounts.
