Bunch of Quicktime questions

I use Quicktime to view the site Hanson.net as I am a huge fan and member of their club.I am disappointed however that all my issues with quicktime now prevent me from viewing the site fully. Here are my issues:
When I try to update an older version of Quicktime an error pop up window comes up saying they cannot locate a file needed to delete the old version which would then allow me to update the new version. Second when I am finally able to use quicktime all my other graphic links appear broken and I cannot fully initialize sites such as youtube.I was wondering if someone can give me a concise step by step direction on how to correct these problems so I can get the full usage out of Quicktime without all these bugs.
Sincerly Missy

QuickTime formats are not used at YouTube.
They use Flash Media and you need another player (Adobe.com).

  • The quicktime question mark!!!

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. I am trying to watch a trailer from apple.com. When the trailer screen opens it's white with a faded quicktime logo with a question mark on it in the middle. I know this has been asked a lot, but nothing posted has worked. I don't have firefox or mozilla so those suggestions didn't work. Someone said to delete the .plist file but I don't even know what that is! I have unchecked the flash media in the setting and that didn't work either. Please help me!!!!

i am experiencing exactly the same problem which has occured since the Quicktime Security update which was put out in the past few days. all flash type video from websites like www.nytimes.com are no longer working. i have tried the MIME solution suggested on Dec 22 but this has not solved the problem.

  • The eternal Quicktime Question Mark! Help?

    Hi,
I've installed and re-installed quicktime 7.0.3 (the latest for OSX) a few times now and am able to view a single file (ie a movie trailer) once only, and then all subsequent attempts to view media with Quicktime result in the dreaded question mark. The files I am attempting to view are from Apple movie trailers so I can't imagine they're corrupted. (Or are they?)
    Can anyone help me please?

Open the HD/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTime Plugin.webplugin to your desktop (so you can replace it).
Restart your browser for this change to take effect and try movie trailer again.

  • Safari Help - Quicktime Question Mark

Hey guys, I need help here. My Safari doesn't seem to be working 100% here. I have the Quicktime logo with a 'question mark' on top of it on some on the website I visit. I wonder what I need to do to fix that. Thank you.

Same thing happened to me. Finally figured it out. Install the latest Flash 9.
    Now do this...
    1. Go into System Preferences and choose Quicktime.
    2. Click on Advanced tab.
    3. Uncheck Enable Flash box
    4. Then, click on MIME Settings
    5. Click on triangle next to Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous File Formats
    6. Uncheck all boxes under and including Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous File Formats (you may only need to uncheck the Flash Media box, but I did them all and haven't noticed any other problems)

  • IMovie and QuickTime question ?

PLEAE CAN YOU HELP ME IN THIS QUESTION, WHEN USING IMAGE SEQUENCE IN iMovie AND QuickTime Pro, AND IF YOU HAVE IMAGES VERTICAL AND ONES HORIZONTAL, THE SEQUENCE TAKES THE SHAPE OF THE FIRST IMAGE AND USES IT FOR ALL OTHER IMAGES. SO IF FIRST IMAGE IS VERTICAL ALL CONSEQUENT IMAGES ARE VERTICAL. HOW CAN WE MAKE THE SEQUENCE TAKE THE SHAPE OF EACH IMAGE INDIVIADUALLY IRRESPECTIVE OF THE FIRST IMAGE IN THE SEQUENCE.
    Thanks a lot

< putting hands of ears... aahh! good! >
same here: I'm not a 100%, what iwaddah tries to accomplish, I stumble over "QTpro" and "image sequence"...
QTpro allows the conversion of a socalled image sequence into a dv; e.g. you do cellpaintings for a toon, you open that sequence - voila! => video...
    buuuuut:
these files have all to be the same size, rotation, aspect ratio and have to fullfill some specs in naming (consequtive, pic001, pic002...)
my guess, iwaddah's sequence does not fullfill all that; if the first pic is "portrait" (not landscape, video is 4:3), the final video will probably "squash" all pics... (never tried that)

  • What to do about QuickTime question marks in Safari 2.0.4?

    Hi everyone,
This may sound like a stupid question but it's beginning to bug me:
When I use Safari to browse the internet, I see question marks in lots of areas where there is supposed to be animated clips or images. The question marks are over the QuickTime symbol.
    I'm using Safari 2.0.4
I'm using QT 7.1.3 and did not update because 7.1.5 had a bug in it that was interfearing with ffmpegX that I use to convert video and music containers.
    - Is there any firmware that could get rid of the anoying Questions marks and let me see what I'm missing on webpages?
    - Or do I need to update Safari?
FireFox on the other hand does not give me that problem.
    Input is always appreciated.
    Rio.

    1) what does "com.apple.Safari.plist" do?
    2) What is it for?
    3) Why was it created?
a .plist file stores all of the user preferences for the associated application as well as information like what app to use for video, audio, viewing PDF files, etc. These files can easily become corrupted over time. Trashing them forces the application to create a fresh file.
    4) What IS a Cache file?
    5) What is IN a cache file?
    6) Why does a computer NEED cache files?
    7) What will happen when I find the mentioned cache files and delete them?
Cache files store information. The cache file for your web browser would store previously visited pages, images, downloaded files etc. This allows the application to reload pages (or files) faster since the data is stored locally and does not have to be retrived from a remote server. Again these files can become quite large and are prone to corruption. I have found it prudent to empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu, select "Empty Cache") every couple of days.
Re-installing apps from the DVD requires a program such as "Pacifist" to extract the program files. It's cumbersome and better if you can avoid it.
    NotNed
PS: You should reboot the computer after trashing .plist files. Since the file is already loaded into RAM, the new file will usually not be created until the next time the system loads.

  • Safari Problems, Quicktime Question Mark on Pages

A week ago I downloaded PithHelmet, The basic ad blocker for Safari.
Anyway now the problem in safari I have, is that when ever i want to open a webpage with includes animations, videos or other, It shows me a Weird Quicktime logo with a question mark over it , although PithHelmet is uninstalled .
So here is a preview of one of the webpages this occurs:

    http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7084/picture2tz6.png
Im assuming you all know how Youtube looks like, so it doesnt seem like my broswer is just Lagging
Also, when i wanter to upload the pictures in ImageShack, i got the same sign :
    http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6282/picture3ue0.png
    Any support would be helpful

Did you also install a Quicktime update recently? One of the recent ones caused this to happen for some people.
Also check if it happens in a different user account. If it doesn't, it's probably something simpler to fix.

  • SWF files get the faded Quicktime Question Mark !!

I began to see that any swf art won webpages was not playing in Safari - It just shows a faded Quicktime Q with a question mark over it.
I suspected that these were a newer flash version 9 swf so I downloaded the Adobe Flash 9 player. But this did nort solve the issue, and any flash image - even earlier version just evoke the faded Q?. I suspected it was Safari, but
Microsoft's Internet Explorer does not play any flash swf either but Firefox does!! Is this a Quicktime plugin issue or an internet plug-in issue?
    any suggestions or support here?
Regards from a long term Mac evangelist.

  • Videos will not play in safari either quicktime question mark of nothing

    Hi everyone,
Initially I had an issue with Quicktime videos in Safari. - They would not play, all I got was a question mark infront of the video. Looking on these forums, appartently unchecking the misc. settings in MIME in QT preferences helps. Anoyingly I cannot actually uncheck those preferences, the mac won't let me. also, after reinstalling the flash update, and restarting etc, now all I get when I go to apple.com/trailers and try to play a video is the QT playback bar, but nothing else. It just stays there and does nothing. I am on broadband so speed is not an issue. how can I fix my issue? Thanks, Adam.

Hello to everyone! Sorry if I seem to be straying off topic. There are several related threads in this forum, the Safari 3 beta forum and also the Quicktime forum.
I have this problem as well - on my PowerBook G4, but not on my PowerMac G5... Specifically, in Safari on the Apple Special Event August 2007 page where we look for Steve to intro the new iMac, I see no button to push to display the stream. Just after the last word in the paragraph that the Play button should be under, there is a small active area that will bring up the stream on its web page (an invisible button), but when that happens, there is only the audio content. I have not tried the movie trailers, but these problems sound identical. So, this looks like several related symptoms - may be several problems or only one.
    Everything works normally in FireFox.
Moving the HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin file to the desktop fixes this problem in Safari, but induces several other problems.
I have MacOSX 10.4.10 up to date, Quicktime 7.2.0, Safari 2.0.4 (419.3). DIVX web player 1.3.1 (p/o 6.6 package), Flash 9.0.47, etc... I have upgraded from many, many versions of Mac-OSX to the present.
I recently installed i-Life '08 on both computers.
I repaired permissions and sucecssfully verified my disk - no impact regarding this problem.
I reinstalled Quicktime - no resolution.
I am a knowledgable user - not expert, but quite knowledgable - I suspect that there is an internet plug-in conflict. Someone elsewhere in the discussion forum (Quicktime area, I think) also ventured that guess.
Here are my internet plug-ins for the problem PowerBook G4:
    QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
    Quartz Composer.webplugin
    JavaPluginCocoa.bundle
    Java Applet.plugin
    RealPlayer Plugin.plugin
    npUpload.xpt
    iPhotoPhotocast.plugin
    VerifiedDownloadPlugin.plugin
    npdivx.xpt
    Windows Media Plugin
    Disabled Plug-Ins
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    flashplayer.xpt
    Flash Player.plugin
    QuickTime Plugin.plugin
    Java Applet Plugin Enabler
    ContentUploaderPlugin.plugin
    nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt
    DivXBrowserPlugin.plugin
    NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave
    DRM Plugin.bundle
Don't know why the order is like it is - I displayed my directory, selected all and copied and pasted to get this list - sorting by date or name didn't alter the order of this list (hmmm - something to ponder on a dull day!).
I will post the plug-in list for my desktop that works correctly on Tuesday when I am back at the office.
That is all I know on this issue. Hope someone sees something useful here to help get to the bottom of this.

  • Quicktime question

(i Know this is FCE board, but did not find a QT PRO board)
I'm in QT Pro and I have a mpg file that came from a digital photo camera. (Sony W1 - 5 Megapixel) I have a file that is 37 sec,
    12.8MB,
    size is 640X480,
    25FPS,
    data rate 354.9kb.sec.
    Format is mpeg1 muxed, 640X480.
There is sound on the file when I play it with QT, but I'm trying to export it to mpeg4 from QT and in the options (button) settings, QT tells me that "no audio will be output because this movie has no audio"...... what gives?? There is audio on the original mpeg1 file
I'm trying to mend (cut and paste) an iPhoto export QT slide show (same size 640X480) to this mpeg1 movie that came from the Sony W1 photo camera. and export it as a self contained movie. But I need the sound from the short movie mpeg1.
When I play the original file mpeg1, I hear the sound. Maybe it's the muxed that does it!! Anyone can help???
I thought that the original being a mpeg1, was not proper, so I wanted to export it into a mpeg4 ! Or is there a better format to use?
    What I am doing wrong?
    michel

Chances are Quicktime will be able to handle the .avi files, but it probably needs some codecs. Two of the most popular are available from the following links:
    DivX beta for Intel Macs
    XviD preview for Intel Macs
VLC, as suggested above, is another good option, and the most recent betas of that program are now Universal Binaries.

  • Bunch of oracle questions

    Hi Guys,
I have some oracle questions. What does generating statistics for a table or index
actually do? And what is the difference between estimate statistics and compute
statistics 10% or any other percentage?
How does creating new statistics improve performance? Also, what is brconnect

what are the various uses for it?

    Hi Cyrus,
Q1: What does generating statistics for a table or index ..
A1: The generated statistics are used by the cost based optimizer to compute the optimal execution plan for your Sql statements
Q2: How does creating new statistics improve performance?
A2: Data in your tables change over time. So, not up to date statistics about this data would mean sub optimal results, computing the optimal exec plan for your Sql statements. That is, why your statistics should be up to date.
Q3: And coming to a different topic, can someone tell me the  ..

  • Stupid Mac OS 10.4 and Quicktime Questions

How can I get the intro video on Tiger to play again. I just reinstalled tiger and was going through the setup process and it played the little welcome vid.
    About Quicktime
When there is a quicktime update that is like for example qt 7.0.1 to 7.0.2 do i have to buy a new pro key everytime they have a little update like that>
    Thanks

    1. Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /System/Library/CoreServices/Setup Assistant.app/ as the folder's location. When this folder has appeared, reopen the Go to Folder window and enter Contents/Resources/TransitionSection.bundle/Contents/Resources/ If the folder doesn't appear, rerun the first command with everything after CoreServices removed, control-click the Setup Assistant, choose Show Package Contents, and continue from there. The file you want is named intro.mov.
    2. No.

  • Iphoto/slideshow/quicktime question

    Hi all:
My son needs to be able to make slideshows from time to time for homework. For some reason, his G3 imac 400 (Panther) is having a problem here. We can export the slideshow to a quicktime movie, but we lose most of the soundtrack. Actually, we only get about 3 seconds of soundtrack then it goes dead, but the pics keep cycling through. Any ideas as to what's up here?
    thanks.

    Ok....
    Problem solved.
However, I'm not sure I understand why. But here's the deal: 2 identical imacs (G3 400, w/ 256mb ram....same version iphoto, itunes & quicktime). System #1 worked, system #2 didn't. After playing for half the day, I realized that System #1's working tune was an *mp3* tune, whereas System #2 was using an AAC tune. Further investigation revealed that both imacs were acting the same. Both would successfully export an iphoto slideshow/with mp3 song to quicktime, & both choked if the itunes song chosen was an AAC.
    So......I can live with this.
If anyone can clear up *why* I can't use an AAC tune, that would be great, but truth be told I can live with it the way it is now.
    thanks!

  • A bunch of noob questions

    Hi there.
I’m planning on purchasing a mac pro when they finally update the lineup (very very soon hopefully!) and I have some questions that hopefully you guys can help me with.
(I realize that some or all of this may no longer be relevant if/when the updated mac pros come out.)
What is the difference between a quad-core and 8-core? What does the “core” mean actually? If it’s a difficult thing to explain, could somebody point me in the right direction so I can read up on it?
There are several sites, OWC comes to mind, that offer RAM upgrades for a much cheaper price than what Apple charges. Do you get what you pay for, or can you actually get the identical RAM that Apple sells for a lower price if you do it yourself?
Is there any benefit or handicap to having two equal sized hard drives instead of one with double the storage? (Is it better to have 2 x 1TB drives or a 2TB drive, or is there a difference at all?)
The graphics option currently states a few different things that confuse me. Under “Second Display” the description states that all Mac Pro graphics cards support two Apple displays. The next line seems to contradict that and say you need an additional NVIDIA card if you want to use two 24-inch Apple LEDs. The graphics option seems to imply that the ATI Radeon is the best card, yet doesn’t have an option to use two of them.
If you want to use two 24-inch displays, do you only have the NVIDIA cards to choose from? Does the Mac Pro have 2 mini display ports?
I currently have all of my music and photos on my macbook. What is the best way to go about having both my music and photos available on both the Mac Pro and my macbook?
Thanks for any help with these questions.

Yes, I like Crucial RAM........it is in all my Macs. This is known as a very Mac friendly supplier here.
I also have some OWC in my G4...also Mac friendly and they and Crucial have excellent customer service and lifetime warranties.
Apple doesn't make their own RAM and the original RAM in my Pro (Samsung) went bad after two years. It is also pretty pricey!

I just migrated it over in Target Disk Mode. But I used DiskWarrior on it before the migration to make sure anything I sent over was not damaged.

  • A Bunch of Rookie Questions from an old DOS guy

Equipment, brand new iMAC 24" with wireless keyboard & mouse, wired LAN.
I started in the computer world with punch cards and the Microsoft world with DOS 2.0. I now have my first MAC so forgive the dumb questions. I bought a big reference book, I've been through it and the help screens but no luck so far.
There doesn't seem to be any uninstall for software. Am I correct in assuming that uninstalling is simply a matter of dragging the software folder to the trash?
How come the Home and End keys don't seem to work in Mail text on my wireless keyboard?
Why doesn't Searchlight display a "didn't find anything" message?
    Thanks, Peter
    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'll simply add the following regarding software uninstall:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
