Burmese/Myanmar font problem in InDesign

CS6, World-Ready Paragraph Composer, Mac OS X v10.8
Does anyone know a Unicode 5.1/6.x font for the Myanmar plane which works in InDesign?
Tried Yangon, Myanmar3 (mm3), Padauk, Parabaik and Apple’s built-in Myanmar (Sangam) MN.
Copy-and-paste from Apple TextEdit works for half of my text with the font Yangon. On the other half, some combined characters are either not combined and/or in the wrong order. For one combined character, I tried all permutations with the Apple’s standard Apple Myanmar keyboard; did not work either. Some fonts are worse, some fonts are better. For example with Myanmar3 only very few characters are combined correctly. In Apple TextEdit and Microsoft Word 2011, Myanmar3 is perfect. In InDesign, တန်း is rendered correctly only by Yangon. Therefore, I assume a font issue.

Can you post a sample?
တန်း
Even if you do not see the line above, you should be able to copy-and-paste it to a Burmese savvy app, are you? Otherwise, I upload a picture.
Did you key the text yourself?
Not everything. I concentrated on the combined characters above, typed them myself, and even looked up (double-checked) the Unicode byte-code/order in a hex editor. Because there is only one order allowed in Apple TextEdit—which matches my understanding of the Unicode standard—I doubt I have a byte issue. Anyway, difficult to judge. As character encoding, do you know if you use Zwagyi-One, Unicode 5.1, or WinInnwa? Perhaps I advanced to much, going for Unicode 5.1 compatible font.
"a font issue"
As stated, was just a guess. I am not about a bug in InDesign. Actually, looks like InDesign is OK because one font works partly. Did I get you correctly, your current best guess: It is an issue of those fonts? That would strengthen my guess, then I would go that path and look more into fonts …

  • Getting the default font - possible? (default fonts problem in InDesign Server CS5)

Is there a way to decide whether a font is used as "default font" for a document?
Or a simple way to see whether a font is used at all?
The actual problem is that InDesign server (CS5 ver. 7.0.3.533) returns the "default font" along with all other used fonts, when looping through the document.fonts collection. This becomes a problem when the default font is never used in the document, and is also not present. Then the (name of) the default font may also become meddled by a style that does not even exist for that very font.
This is indicated as a problem in our application... as a missing font, just as the call to InDesign server reports back. But the font (with that style) doesn't even exist.
Running the same script on an desktop InDesign CS5 (ver 7.0.4) the unused default font of the same document is not returned at all.
    Thanks,
    Andreas

To get the default font, just check:
    app.activeDocument.textDefaults.appliedFont
Obviously this didn't solve the problem, since InDesign server has made up a font name that is reported as missing... and it's not equal to the default font. So there is some lack of logic in my previous description.

  • Arial Black font problems in InDesign CS2

    Hi there,
I'm having a bit of a problem with the Arial Black font in InDesign CS2.  I recently got a new computer running Windows XP. The computer has had  MS Service Pack 3 installed. When I installed my old fonts onto the new  computer and booted up InDesign, I noticed there was no Arial Black font, only Arial Black Italic. When I looked under the Arial group of fonts a Black version of the font was there, but on my old machine Arial Black is a separate font group. I've tried deleting the font cache and adding the fonts to the InDesign fonts folder as well, but it still doesn't register as a separate font family. I've also tried installing an older version of Arial Black (2.35 from 2004) and emptying the font cache but still no joy. The  problem is I work on a newspaper and this font is quite common, and is  used on our templates, so when I receive a page I need to change the  font, which isn't ideal. Interestingly, the file name of the font is  ariblk.ttf, but when you look at the icon it appears to be OpenType. The  Arial Black Italic font is called ARBLI__.TTF and has a TrueType icon, and this appears as a separate font family in InDesign. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

I'd give it a go anyway. And please keep in mind that CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing.
At some point, if the current policy holds, you'll be out of the upgrade loop and will have to pay full price.

  • Burmese/Myanmar fonts from Word

    Hey,
I'm trying to transfer some Word documents that use mostly Wwin_Burmese and WinInnwa fonts to Indesign. They work for the most part when pasted or placed, but a few characters are replaced with the wrong glyph, e.g. the Myanmar T becomes a quotation mark. Any idea why this is happening and how it can be fixed?
    Thanks

This is an issue with Microsoft's encoding of Burmese vs. Adobe.   They do not use the same encoding schema.  See Wikipedia:Font - ဝိကိပိဒိယ   This is also an issue with Hebrew in Adobe which frequently renders incorrectly.   The issue is a nightmare but i am not technical enough to understand how to fix it.

  • Arabic font problem in Indesign cs4

I was using Indesign CS2 and just upgraded to CS4. I was heavily using "traditional arabic" font in CS2 without any problem.
For those who don't know, in arabic, each letter is represented differently according to its place inside a word. Almost all letters have 4 different forms, at the begining, in the middle at the end and alone.
After the upgrade I can insert only the letter at the begining form. I can clearly see all fonts in all forms in glpyhs table.
    Any suggestion ?
    Thank you

This not a locked Windows font because I was using it in Indesign CS2 without any problem.
In Help>About section all I see, is CS4 6.0. So this in not a Middle Eastern version.
For the moment I found the following solution :
I found an Open Type Arabic Font.
When I type something with this font "propositional forms" setting is set to "General", this is the default setting and I was unable to set "Automatic" as default. First I type something in Arabic then I select the text and set "propositional forms" setting to "Automatic".Yes it is a little bit cumbersome but  this is the only solution I found.
I could send font files to anybody if you want to try them . It is not allowed to send them as attachment

Exporting to PDF produces distorted fonts. I have tried with Helvetica and Helvetica Nue.
I am not using third party font software . . I am on OSC Maverics running Indesign CC.
Also some low res jpgs are very distorted for no reason.. I am trying to make th PDF for Screen so the reolution should not be a problem.
Please can someone help me fix this withouth third party software.

I'm not seeing anyting out of the ordinary in your screen shot, certainly not skew, but maybe I'm not looking at the right thing.
As for the boldening, that's a known effect of using transparency on a page. It shows on screen, and in low resolution printing, but generally does not show on high resolution printing like you would get with a press.

  • Bangla font problem in indesign

in indesign cc I can not write  কর্ ব্য, before it was ok.

I saw this when you posted, polash, but I thought that Ellis had it. I'm on Lion, not Mavericks, but I think that it ought to be close enough.
    1) Are you using a font called Bangla downloaded from the Web, or the Bangla MN built into Mac OS?
    2) Are you using the built-in Bengali input method? Is it Bangla or Bangla-QUERTY?
    3) Can you tell us the exact keys you hit on the physical keyboard to enter that text?
I'm only asking because I want to try to recreate it over here on my install of InDesign CC. If it worked fine in CS6 on Mavericks but not on CC, there's something interfering, or you've found a new bug. If the first, I want to figure out what it is, and if the second, then we should both report it.
if i copy paste from textedit, its fine, but if I try to write word bakes.
There are lots of languages where pre-composed glyphs in InDesign but they need to be put together outside of InDesign. If you look at the Glyphs menu (Type-> Glyphs) there are a whole bunch of glyphs with an ID of "NULL" that take two or three keystrokes to create. It's a bit of a hack, but it's necessary because so few applications have advanced OpenType support that would allow Bengali and Tibetan and Burmese and all of the other complex scripts to be rendered without, well, hacks. Tricks. Little bits of tape and wire holding the publishing system together.

  • Unpredictable font behaviour in InDesign

    Hi folks.
I'm experiencing a weird recurring font problem within InDesign CS3 and CS4.
I'm copying some text (Meta LF - Postscript) from advert A to advert B and the text keeps changing to the non-LF version of the font.
Here's the list of things that I have tried so far:
    1. I removed the non-LF version from my machine but it still converts to the LF version but now sees it as missing.
    2. Removed the font cache from within Extensis Universal Type Server and reinstalled all my fonts.
    3. Exported the file as an InDesign Interchange file to see if it cleared any corruption.
    4. Pasted the same text from advert A into a new document and it worked fine.
    5. Pasted advert B into a new document. Copied the text from advert A in but still getting the same problem.
    6. Pasted advert B into a new document deleted advert B and then pasted the text from advert A in again. Still getting the same problem.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!
    I'm gradually going insane!
    Gordon
This is occurring on multiple machines. G5s & MacPros running Mac OS 10.4 & 10.5, InDesign CS3 (simualted the same problem in CS4) and running Extensis Universal Type server. Meta Postscript font from FontShop International.

Starting with the obvious, have you looked at the Paragraph or Character Styles panels for these documents?

Start by rebooting the computer. If that doesn't work, search for adobefnt*.lst and delete all instances where * becomes a 2-digit number.

  • InDesign CS6 - fonts problems (Document fonts fight with system installed fonts, "font incomplete")

    hello
First, Indesign function to automatically open fonts from "Document fonts" folder is fantastic, quasy font manager. BUT, fonts is available ONLY for THAT indesign document, no other application can use it, even from CS6 suite. This is probably the most stupid decision about how this function must work. IDEALLY, fonts will be available for ALL application inside CS package until indd doc is closed. If I need some font for editing links in photoshop, illustrator I need to install them. This workflow have wrong concept.
We now have problem, sorry Indesign have problem. Example, I need type1 font mt-symbol for mathtype AND for Indesign. This font is installed in c:\windows\fonts folder. Everything work fine. When I make package from Indesign and reopen indesign indd document inside package, Indesign report that mt-symbol IS INCOMPLETE. WHY, BECAUSE CONCURENT FONTS from both C:\windows\fonts folder AND FROM "Document fonts" folder. If I rename "Document fonts" folder, Indesign open font only from system and everything work properly.
THIS IS BIG PROBLEM, fonts circles around workflow/folders and always will be duplicates in "document fonts" and system\fonts folder because different application need same fonts.
    Any solution?

Another problem with the Document Fonts folder that we just noticed: in CS5, you could place Windows Type 1 fonts (.pfm and .pfb) into the Document Fonts folder on a Mac and InDesign would activate them.
This no longer works in CS6. (Bug report filed.)
Huge bummer, as this was a great timesaver and workaround in a high-production prepress environment when working with old Windows files. Hopefully this was not an intentional change and will be restored in a later bugfix release, or at worst in CS7.

  • "font" problems when converting InDesign file to negative

the printing service we use for our college newsletter, which is done in InDesign CS3, says he is having "font problems" when he turns the file into a negative (the master used for printing paper copies of the newsletter). I use only a standard font, "Times," in various sizes.
he did not have this problem with InDesign CS2, and he is as yet unable to explain exactly what the problems are but said there are 3 pieces of equipment involved that each contribute to the problem: old vs new operating systems (OS) in RIP unit and workstation to newest applications and older RIP unit. (I haven't a clue what any of this means...)
he has asked we create an "outline" of the InDesign file before sending it and believes doing that may help. however, when I create an outline of the document, all of the font turns bright red-- is this what is supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong?
can anyone help me figure out how to help the printer?

The .sitx file extension is a Stuffit executable, a way of compressing files so that they take less time to transfer. This has nothing to do with your problem.
What I'm recommending is that you Export PDF (File > Export > Adobe PDF). Choose the Press Quality preset and send the resulting PDF to your printer. Scott's suggestion will give you a PDF with outlined type, but before you go that route, try a Press Quality PDF, which will have live type and embedded fonts.
The best reason for sending PDF to your printer is to avoid font problems.

  • Export ePUB from inDesign CS6 - polish fonts problem

I have to make ePUB with polish fonts.
I create a simple one page document in inDesign CS6 and export it to ePUB. All fonts are embedded.
When I check it in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) there is problem with polish fonts (ż, ł). ADE doesn't read it correctly. Other readers do it in right way.
Is it a problem with inDesign or ADE?

The ADE provides a preview, and nothing more than that. Actual viewers have other, more, or less capabilities -- some don't support embedded fonts, others do but with limitations, etc.
    ComrelPL wrote:
.. that's why bookstores need ePUB to be compatibile with this ADE.
E-Pub is still in its infancy. There is no general "e-pub" standard that *all* viewers are compatible with, other than the very lowest common denominator (which may very well mean "plain text").

  • Problems with installation  Fonts into Adobe InDesign Server

    Hi,
I have a problem to install the fonts into Adobe InDesign Server.
I'm developing an application that manage the fonts, principally It's move font file to directory Fonts of Indesign Server. That works.
The problem is that InDesing spends more than 10 seconds to detect it. I need that it works inmediately.
How can I do it? Can I load the font with SDK?
    Thanks for your help

When I used iOS4.3.3 , my phone did not stop working for a while although I can't see in Myanmar font!

Apple has not yet included a Myanmar font in iOS, and there is no way for users to add one.  You can search the app store for "myanmar" or "burmese" to see if there are some apps that may be useful for some purposes.
The best place to ask Apple to add new features is

  • Font issues in InDesign CS6

I downloaded InDesign CS6 through Creative Cloud and am having lots of font problems. If I use any font other than an Adobe font or an Open Type font, I am unable to create an error-free pdf from the InDesign file. I can use True Type or Type 1 fonts in the document, but they won't embed into the pdf file. What gives?

Well, those fonts may simply not allow embedding. There is such a flag which font creators can set and Adobe apps honor this and do not embhed fonts they are not allowed to.... Anyway, ask in the ID forum and provide more details like what fonts you actualyl use, what system, what PDF settings and so on...
