Burn a .dmg file on a pc, have it bootable on my g3

I recently purchased OS X Tiger. I backed up the CDs on my PC, now is there anyway i can burn the .dmg files to a disk and make them bootable on my Mac G3?
Thanks
Jeff

I guess that means they are not going to work as copies of the installer CDs.
Do you have the facility to make the copies on a Mac?  That would be your best bet.  You can make copies on a Mac as follows:
Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

  • Problem burning a .dmg file

I have a G4 powerbook. I have burned dvd's before but I am know experiencing a problem. I created a home video that I then burned to dvd using imovie. I have done this a number of times before. After i have the finished product I then copy it and save it as a .dmg file. I was always able to make copies using the .dmg file, but when I burned it this time it burns it as a data file and not as a watchable dvd. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Thanks

When it start working it should show a moving progress bar at the top of its window. If it just says "Working", something is wrong. Often this is due to a bad disk name. The name must be upper case only, with no punctuation (other than underscore _) or spaces. Only digits, _, or uppercase letters. Also the name can't be too long. Probably 31 characters maximum. If it still fails, it could be a problem with the files in your VIDEO_TS folder. If the VIDEO_TS file names look OK (compare them with a working DVD) you may need to use myDVDEdit

If it is a simple error, it will detect it and let you save a corrected version.

  • Can't open DMG files...should have never upgraded my OS to mountain lion

Upgraded to OSX 10.8.2 and now I can't run any downloaded dmg files. Says "the Following disk images couldn't be opened". and then say's there "isn't enough disk space" I'm pretty sure it has something to do with apps that are not approved by the app store. How can I turn it off?
I posted this question before and thought the problem has been solved nbut i'm still having this problem.

How much disk space do you have? When you "Get Info" on a .dmg file, is it set to open with "DiskImageMounter.app"? Should have nothing to do with your Security settings just to mount a disk image.

I am unable to burn mp3 audio files to cd.Every time it says failed due to media write error.I have tried different speeds. Can anyone help pls?

There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.

  • Disk Utility burn error with dmg file

I'm using a Pioneer DVR 106D to burn a dmg file on to a blank DVD. I've done it many times before with the disk utility.
But now I'm getting this message when I try to burn the dmg or make a new image off the old DVD master:
"Device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection"
Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks
    OS 10.3.9

I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5.

  • Wife doesn't have permission to open dmg files

I've got a quick question. I have my wife set up with some limits so she doesn't try to install everything in the world. I've downloaded a disk image file from MyPublisher which will install a iPhoto plugin that will allow her to order books from MyPublisher. Unfortunately she gets the following error when she tries to open the dmg file:
"You don't have permission to open this application"
I guess I have two questions. First, is there a way for me to enable her to install only this application? I don't really want to give her blanket permissions to install apps, only this one. Second, if I install this plugin on my account will it only affect my iPhoto instance, or hers too. I'm more interested in an easy way for her to install/uninstall using that one dmg file so if we can solve that issue I don't care about the other question.

Most likely some extended file permission problem where the files have been miscategories? as quarantined:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4833052/how-do-i-remove-the-extended-attribut es-on-a-file-in-mac-osx
What I have seen, is I open a bunch of *.jpg's in Preview.  If there is a problem with 1 file Preview often quarantines all the following files.  I believe that status goes away on reboot but not ideal to have to do that.
Not sure what the correct way to prevent this behavior is.  This might prove riskier than just fixing the files when it occurs:

  • .DMG files on a PC

Is there anyway to burn a .dmg file on a CD so that a PC can read it. I just tried it and it didn't work. The PC couldn't read the CD.

    Hi, Abe.
Is it that the PC could not read the CD or the disk image?
CDs burned in Finder are compatible with Macs or PCs running Windows. See "Mac OS X 10.4: Creating a CD Formatted for MS-DOS (Windows)."
However, while "Disk Utility 10.5 Help: Formatting a disk for Windows computers" states:"When you create a disk image you can erase it and change its volume format so that other computers, such as MS-DOS for Windows computers or UNIX file system computers, can read it."Under Tiger, I've not found a way using Disk Utility to create or change a disk image with a Mac volume format to one formatted with the MS-DOS file system. Hence, a disk image created on a Mac using Disk Utility won't be readable on a PC unless the PC is running an application like Mediafour's MacDrive for Windows.
With Tiger, disk images now always use the Mac OS Extended file system. Under Panther, one could create disk images using the MS-DOS and UNIX UFS file systems, but that's been removed from Disk Utility under Tiger.
One can use the hdiutil command in Terminal to create a new, blank, Read/Write disk image, or an image from a folder, that uses the MS-DOS file system by including the
    -fs MS-DOS
    flag in the command.
For example, the following Terminal command:
hdiutil create -srcfolder ~/Desktop/Test -fs MS-DOS -volname DOSTest ~/Desktop/DOSTest.dmg
    created a disk image:
    • from the folder Test on my desktop (-srcfolder ~/Desktop/Test)
    • in MS-DOS format (-fs MS-DOS)
    • with volume name of DOSTest (-volname DOSTest) so that when it is mounted it shows as volume "DOSTest" in Finder.
    • with the disk image saved as DOSTest.dmg on my desktop (the last parameter, ~/Desktop/DOSTest.dmg).
The command produced some error messages, i.e. two instances of
    mount_msdos: /dev/disk3: Resource busy
    /sbin/mount failed with error 18176
during the creation process which I have yet to explore, but it turns out the resulting disk image appears fine and mounts on my Mac. It mounts as volume "DOSTEST" (vs. volume name "DOSTest" but -volname may be case insensitive).
Disk Utility shows the mounted volume as having:
    Format: MS-DOS File System (FAT-16).
One could then try burning that disk image to CD and seeing how a PC handles it. I don't have a PC running Windows handy at the moment, otherwise I'd try that.
    Hope that helps.
    Good luck!

  • Can't open DMG-files

I can't open DMG-files anymore because OS X associates dmg-files with another program. Usually when I opend .dmg files a "virtual disk" opened, now another program starts.
I tried the Open with (Openen met in Dutch) function, but I don't know which program I have to choose. When I have this problem on a Windows PC I just select explorer.exe. Which file do I have to choose on my Mac? Or is there another way to solve this?

    Hi mrtn87,
    welcome to Discussions!
    /System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchiveHelper.app opens .zip files,
    and
    /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app opens the .dmg files.
If you have OnyX, you can try running the "Reset LaunchServices Database" and "Reset links between documents and applications" tasks, see if the problem disappears.
Here is a Terminal command you can try if you don't have OnyX (or one of the usual utilities):
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\
    Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister \
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Use Disk Utility to restore the dmg file to the partition. The partition already opens as a disk. If this isn't what you're wanting, be more explicit, especially what's on the dmg file.

  • Can I delete .dmg files off my iMac?

Well, the short version of the question is in the title, but I'll explain further. My iMac, my families main computer, is running out of disc space, and after googling/looking for topics on the issue, I still can't find a clean cut answer to the question "If I delete .dmg files for programs I have already install/use, will the programs become unusable/broken and will my iMac still function properly?". I ask this because, as I said, I'm running out of space and there isn't much else to delete, and I noticed the .dmg files have been taking up a ton of data. I obviously won't just delete all of them willy-nilly, but I mean can I delete ones for updates to Safari or Firefox or iTunes, or even ones for one-time downloads like MSN? Thanks in advance, I just want to be sure on the issue, so far it seems like I safely can if I have installed the application to the applications folder.

You do not have to keep the disc image files you've downloaded (.dmg files.) Doing so will simply free up space. Since the applications were downloaded from internet sources you can always redownload should you lose one.
Drag the .dmg files to the Trashcan on the Dock or select all of them and press COMMAND-DELETE to move all of them to the Trash. Now Empty the Trash to recover the disk space.

  • Why do I get redirected to a blank page when I try to download .dmg files?

I have been having real difficulties for about the last 2 months downloading .dmg files. Instead, I have often been redirected to a blank page, which takes a while to load and the downloads window in my Safari browser does not recognize the download at all. If I try to "save target as" I simply get a useless HTML file. Anyone else have the same problem?

  • Burning DMG File To DVD

I am trying to burn Adobe CS4 dmg file to DVD as a back up. The size is 6.9GB so I am using a Dual Layered DVD which is at least 8GB. For some reason when I try to burn the dmg to DVD I get a message saying "disk doesn't have enough space. Am I doing something wrong? Here are the steps I took...
    1) Inserted blank DVD
    2) Added DMG file to Disk Utility
    3) Highlighted DMG file within Disk Utility and chose the burn option from the menu
This method has worked previously with a 6GB dmg file of iLife using the same exact blank Dual Layered DVD. Also, FYI I am running 10.5.5 Thanks for any help. It's greatly appreciated.

Are you expanding the DMG (you don't want to)? Incidentally, the iLife copy is different than what you are doing. Are you trying to copy the CS4 disk? If so, DU can make an image for you, of the disk. Make certain you save it as a "master", not "encrypted", or any other choice. Then, as you explain, select it, and hit burn.

  • I want to "burn" a .dmg (windows 7 file) to a bootable usb stick

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro and the superdrive doesn't read or write any disks (a common problem with this type of syperdrive)
I want to install the dvd with Windows 7 on my Mac and of course i can't because of my superdrive problem.
I have converted the dvd to a .dmg file so that I can make a bootable usb stick.
But I can't "burn" the .dmg image to a usb. I've tried many ways to copy it but unsuccessful.
    Can someone please help me?

  • Unable to burn DMG files to CDs on external USB2 disc burners?

    Hello.
I am having difficulties burning 88.x MB DMG files to CDs (new CD-Rs and an old CD-RW) onto two different external USB2 disc burner drives (both have power AC connected: HP and LG Super brands). The new Mac Mini (no disc slot drive)'s updated 64-bit Mac OS X 10.7.4's Disk Utilities tries to burn and then fail right away or after a few seconds. The error says "Unable to burn 'whatever.dmg' (The disc drive did not respond properly and can't recover or retry." Nothing interesting in dmesg, but Disk Utility's logs had details: http://pastie.org/private/6tnqcnkwycr2yftp8gkzxw ...
I do see my drives' lights on during the burn. I can quick erase the old CD-RW fine. I can burn 538 MB from an 64-bit Windows 8 on my Acer AM3800 PC with the same discs and external burner drives without any problems. Also, I thought it was my USB cable extension, but it wasn't it. I don't use any USB hubs either. DMG files are fine too. I did notice copying from a CD to Mac Mini's local HDD was slow, but no failures.
What could be the problem? Is USB2 too slow or something? Thank you in advance.

    Did you look at...
    ~/Library/Logs/DiscRecording.log
USB2 is slow, but not that slow, but have you tried reducing the burn speed?

  • Burning .dmg file from Windows computer

If I create an iDVD project and save it as a .dmg file (instead of burning it right away), can that file then be burned to a DVD from ANY computer--Windows or Mac?
I'll be away from my external DVD burner (only have the combo drive in my PB) and want to be able to use a Windows computer at work to burn the final DVD.
Is this possible? If so, will it still burn a regular playable video DVD?

Doesn't sound like image files are universal (take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.img). But, why not give it a try? You'll need some method to transport that large file that's also cross-platform (perhaps create a tiny trial project).
