Burn and Dodge issues in CS2

I'm using Photoshop CS2 and I'm learning how to use it. I'm taking a photography class and my instructor was telling us about the Burn and Dodge tools and showed us some techniques. I can't seem to get the burn and or dodge tool to work. I feel pathetic and it's probably something simple that I'm not doing, I was able to use the tools on another computer at my school.
Any help would be great.

Brush size is fine and the exposure is fine. The tools are not doing anything, there not burning or dodging, nothing is happening. I also tried using a brush, nothing is happening too. I don't know if that has something to do with the burn and dodge tools.

Where is the burn and dodge tool in elements 12??

Should be like version 11.  It is on the left in Expert.  Look in the Enhance block.  It can show up as Dodge,
    Burn or Sponge.

  • Burn and Dodge tools not working on b/w sketch scan

Hi, I may have somehow eliminated information in an image of a black and white sketch which prevents the dodge and burn tools from working...is there a common mistake which prevents these tools from working as they normally should on a black and white image with multiple shades? (The sketch is not pure black and pure white but has multiple gray shades...it "looks" like an image on which these tools should work.)
When adjusting Levels for the image all of its "information" seems to be clustered around the "0" point on the far left of the Levels adjustment slider, if that helps in understanding this problem....
Did I mistakenly somewhere along the line destroy information in this image necessary for these tools to work?
    Thanks in advance

    > it would be nice if dodge and burn worked on partially transparent images. This is impossible?
It is working properly. With a partially transparent layered image, only **some** of the visible tone is coming from the image layer. The rest is coming from whatever is showing on the layer underneath. Burn and dodge will only affect the layer you're working on. As I said, I could get get B&D to affect it a little ... and that's is exactly what it should do in this case. Because the pixels are partially transparent, B&D is only going to **partially** affect the visible tone. It's altering the pixels on the image layer, just not very much because there aren't very many pixels available.
Peel off white does an incredible job. However, I would use it only once. The fact that the sketch becomes a bit transparent tells you it's removing image information.

  • Why is the panarama function in my Elements 12 not active? Also, how do you burn and dodge?

Why is the panarama function in my Elements 12 not active? Also, how do you burn and dodge in Elements 12?

It sounds like you aren't in Expert Mode. Click the word Expert at the top of the PSE window to go there.
For burn and dodge, click the Sponge tool and you'll see those tools in the tool options at the bottom of the screen:

  • Installed 2.2-  Now my burn and dodge doesnt work!  Help!

any suggestions? The burn and dodge really doesnt change anything now when i brush over an image even at -4! Any ideas!

    Flow? Density?

  • Can't locate burn or dodge tools

I am using PSE 3 and used their help file to locate how to use the burn and dodge tools but they are not on my toolbar. Any idea how I get to them?
Using Windows XP professional on Toshiba laptop.

I have my toolbar in a single column view, but it's all the way down at the bottom. The default is to the Sponge Tool, but click and you'll see Dodge and Burn available as other choices.

  • MacBook Pro Health and safety issue: Potential Burn during normal use

    Hi,
I am not a complainer. I worked for Apple of 6+ years and have had a top of the line Apple Notebook since Apple created the concept of the laptop notebook.
I recently experienced a 3rd degree burn using my MacBook Pro that I think Apple needs to warn folks about:
    MacBook Pro 17"
    Machine Model: MacBookPro1,2
    CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
    Number Of Cores: 2
    CPU Speed: 2.16 GHz
    L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B00
    Serial Number: ()
    SMC Version: 1.5f10
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
I had my laptop on my lap. I was wearing shorts. It noticed that it was warm on my leg where the left side of the MacBook Pro was touching my leg, but it didn't create a reflex pain response.
Upon completing my session, when I closed the machine and put it away, I noticed a 1 inch x .75 inch blister on my leg where it had been touching the MacBook/Pro; and it has turn out to be a significant burn.
I checked all the documentaiton that came with my MacBook Pro and there was no warning about the potential of this situation.
I recommend that Apple let owners know, perhaps through an email or a popup when they visit the Apple site. Lastly, when I encountered this issue, I wasn't running any high performance, compute bound applications. It was email. So, I have to believe that it is possible to detect wait states within the processes running and take the processors to a low power mode of operation when they are not performing actual work. Am I out in left field here?
I want Apple to be successful. I haven't heard of a similar complaint on any of the high performance PC's at work. Beyond a Health and Safety issue, this is also a reputation issue. Better to face into the storm and honestly deal with this issue.

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.5) Potential Health and Safety Issue- 3rd degreee burn potential under normal use

Mike... I do sympathize with your situation but let me correct you:
I recently experienced a 3rd degree burn using my
    MacBook Pro
Do you know what a 3rd degree burn is? A 3rd degree burn involves the dermis, and is full thickness involving the subcutaneous tissues and fat underneath your skin layers. This is something that usually happens when man meets fire, electrocution, and chemical burns. A 3rd degree burn is not typically achieved by a simple transfer of energy by conduction, unless extreme heat for an extended period of time.
I had my laptop on my lap. I was wearing shorts. It
noticed that it was warm on my leg where the left
side of the MacBook Pro was touching my leg, but it
didn't create a reflex pain response.
Reflex pain response? Don't try to make up medical terminology. You didn't feel it much like you don't feel the sun when you get a sunburn initially... your skin slowly adjusted to the temperature, and at some point the heat increased over the threshold of which causes damage. You should have gone to the doctor if you were overly concerned.
Upon completing my session, when I closed the machine
    and put it away, I noticed a 1 inch x .75 inch
blister on my leg where it had been touching the
MacBook/Pro; and it has turn out to be a significant
    burn.
You're right, if you have a 1inch by almost 1 inch heat related blister on your leg, it is bad, nothing that I would consider significant. That is less then 1% of your body, probably about 0.25% to 0.5%, and only a 2nd degree burn. Your most significant complication would be a local skin infection.
I checked all the documentaiton that came with my
MacBook Pro and there was no warning about the
    potential of this situation.
Actually... I'd hate to call you a liar, but I'm pretty sure that it does warn about burns.
To confirm this, apple has also information online:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
I recommend that Apple let owners know, perhaps
through an email or a popup when they visit the Apple
    site.
    They do... link above.
Lastly, when I encountered this issue, I wasn't
running any high performance, compute bound
applications. It was email. So, I have to believe
that it is possible to detect wait states within the
processes running and take the processors to a low
power mode of operation when they are not performing
actual work. Am I out in left field here?
No, you're definitely not. Here's where I start to agree with you. For the computer to heat up that much, when not doing things like rendering video is abnormal, and you deserve to have apple check out your computer. I think you should contact them on this concern.
I want Apple to be successful. I haven't heard of a
similar complaint on any of the high performance PC's
at work. Beyond a Health and Safety issue, this is
also a reputation issue. Better to face into the
storm and honestly deal with this issue.
It's harder for other manufacturers... our computers are aluminum, designed to disperse the heat. Technically they are considered "portables" not laptops, but I don't get into that argument because I disagree with the word "portable"... it's meant to work on your lap, and if you can't comfortably using regular apps, you deserve an answer.
A slightly crisp, but loyal, MacBook Pro user.
Hey, at least you're taking it with some humor. It's a shame you had to get hurt as a result of your computer. If I were you I would have gone to your Primary Care Physician, documented the burn, and returned your computer for a new one, and for something say, a free iPod for your pain.
Sorry you got hurt, I think you should have your heat issue professionally investigated through apple care

  • IQ826t Restart and Heating Issue

One thing I definitely do not like the HP's support especially when they will not allow us to buy a 7 Upgrade from Vista nor will they support something (even when I find their glitches and they admit after telling me it was just the OS).. On Repair work, I had to ship it out and this will be my 2-3 time to do repair on this PC in the past 3 years (and I have to wait a week for the repair to be done...)
    Besides that, IQ826t, Win 7 Ultimate SP1
All Drivers are up to date with HP website (utilizing Win 7 64 bit drivers and Firmware is up to date). AVG update/scan (no issue - confirmed even rootkit).. Malwarebyte - Scan and no issue
Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmentation done on a monthly and quarterly schedule
    Biggest Issue:
I am getting a crash with Win 7 0x124 Stop Error Message (happens periodically and even after a reboot)
Never had this issue until May and the upgrade to Win 7 was done last year with SP1 update done on March (so it is not an issue with the OS as HP support personnel seems to think... I proved them the issue with Windows Update History, The  Bluescreen error code on my error code reader)..  This machine under warranty and I had issues with it constant (even in Vista)
They state that it is the OS.. Again, if that was the case, I would think it would happen right away like my Toshiba on SP1 upgrade... That was not the case in the matter.  I have a firmware reset (default settings) and the issue persist..
The Error Code relates always HAL.dll or ntoskrnl.exe
One if hardware compatiblity and the other is an OS kernel exe file.. And this usually checking knowledge base relates to hardware failing due to 1) Compatibility (which HP website confirms is not the case) 2) OS corruption (which is not the case checking on safe mode and this happening STILL 3) Heat Issue (which I believe is the issue and was been documented on the Internet
What I am noticing is the unit is extremely HOT (vent is almost burning when it has been off and just turned on).. I wonder if the hardware pieces are literally melting to destruction since I can't just open it up (they state it will void my warranty)
The Symptoms before the Crash (happens any time.. Even right after a power up)
If you are playing audio or video, you will start to hear jitters and sound seems to echo itself .. Video would start to lag and become choppy..  Systems start to slow down and things seem to run very slow.. I have seen the power light on the PC start on but the touchscreen just go black (will not restart sometimes)..
Minor Issues (but could be related)
    1) When running PC Hardware Diagnostic, they will come up with an error code in the past and that was warranted for a motherboard replacement (of course, they ship the box to the wrong location and I was in the middle of my wedding so I get to it now).. It was pertaining to PCI Express Status ICH9 PCI Express Root Port  where it will generate an error code... Now, running the diagnostic... I will not get any error but PCI Express Root Port 3 & 5 do not show up on the diagnostic... Wouldn't that obvious show something that is a problem when there are 6 ports (which on the previous diagnostic that I can't grab past logs shows that). That is not warranted for a warranty work? Just a note, I got the fail test code (which was intermittent but keep happening and the tech support would not look at previous case.. Port 4 failed and a fatal device code)
    2) Blu-Ray player will not run and their answer is that it is your Blu-Ray until they realize that I ran it on 3 different Blu-Ray player standalone, different Blu-Ray, and confirm DVD will work.. They still think it is a software issue until they can't deny my point when it will not read the Blu-Ray no matter what (they took control and confirmed it).. They believe the HP SmartDVD software was failing because of Win 7 and not Vista (even when I downgrade and confirm it works, I stated the software is the issue...  Lone and behold, 2 months later they had an update that they refuse to admit I was RIGHT on the matter and done 15 hours of troubleshooting that they were wrong about)
    3) Wireless Keyboard and Mouse lost connectivity even if the battery is not low... Just stop typing or omit letters.. This is considering the keyboard is literally in front of the touchscreen
    4) Touchscreen is sensitive when it wants to be but won't in other... Constant issues there
This is why I have so much issue with support.. They seem to show that they will do anything to deny the issue.. Heck, I am a computer technian calling on the issue.. It ain't like I didn't troubleshoot on the matter... But they think we are all morons and when I prove them wrong, they will use any excuse to honor warranty... That is why it is amazing..

  • Extreme charging and syncing issues

Okay, so for the past few weeks I've been developing charging and syncing issues. The first third party usb cable worked for a while and after some point it begin to physically wear and tear, and wires were disconnecting. Needed a new charger, so naturally I went and got another one. However, it didn't work, and as a measure to see if it was faulty, I plugged in the old one and smelt smoke/a burn smell.
So, I plugged the new charger into an old ipod touch 2G and it charges and syncs just dandy. The 3GS is a particularly weird case here; as it will not charge while on. After letting it die, I plugged it in and got an empty battery indicator with a charging (lightning) symbol, and after a couple of minutes it powered back on, but still wasn't charging once ios actually booted up. Weird, right? If I could connect to windows I could restore it to remove the jailbreak, as using Erase All Content and Settings keeps the phone in an endless loop until I hard reset.
The kicker here is that it seems to only charge when it's off, as if its plugged in and you slide to power off, and turn it back on later, it will sometimes have a higher percentage. And, at the place I work, we have many iPads so I plugged it up to the iPad chargers and it worked with some of them, albeit slower then expected.
Is my phone not getting enough voltage or something of the nature? I have 3 wall adaptors, one apple, and two of them standard LG adaptors, and a third party usb cable that notably works for the iPod just fine. I've connected it to 3 different computers with itunes and the result was the same as if it was dead and plugged into the wall; enough power to boot to home screen then die afterwards.
The thing that get's me is when I hit Erase All Content and Settings and it's plugged, it makes a charging noise indication but only when I hit that reset button. If it wasn't for that, I would beleive it was a hardware issue. That, or I'm just trying to deny the phone's inevitable fate. I needed a reason to switch to the 4s, so maybe this is it. I don't like giving on on something without fixing it though so it's gonna bother me until I do.
Thanks for any suggestions or help!

  • IDVD problem burning and multiplexing - gets stuck but ejects the DVD and the DVD doesn't play

I am having trouble burning DVDs.  Everything seems to be working fine during the iDVD project creation.  I can watch the movie and select scenes within iDVD.  Then, when I go to burn the DVD, it gets stuck at the burning/multiplexing stage - the wheel just keeps spinning and says there is about a minute left.  Yet it ejects the DVD and the DVD won't play when inserted into a DVD player.  It will show the intro and the scene selection pages but when you click on one of the scenes, it gets stuck and doesn't play.  I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iDVD.  The problem persists.  It seems like the burner itself is the problem.  What can I do to fix it?  I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 with a 2.8 GHzintel Core 2 Duo and iDVD version 7.0.4.

    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

  • DVD DL fail to burn AND Firewire 400/800 problems

I have had several months of intermittent DVD burn fails. Most recently today burning from the finder and it is now reporting "The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)."
That error is new, previously it was always
    Sense Key - Hardware Error
    Sense Code - 0x03
The first time this cropped up was on 10.5.x and when I reported it to apple they had me take it to get the drive replaced since it was still covered by applecare.
After the DVD replacement and while still in the shop it burned a few DVD DLs ok. A few weeks later the same 0x03 errors. (it always burns CDs just fine)
After another phone conversation with applecare, they now suggest that the logic board needs to be replaced. (This was after I mentioned I frequently have problems with Firewire 400 or 800 external drives showing up...sometimes they work sometimes they don't. The same drives always show up when connected via USB)
I was walked through resetting the PRAM, which cleared up the Firewire 400/800 temporarily, but it did not help the DVD burn problem.
So on the eve before the appointment, this crazy MBP (2,2, 2.33 ghz) burns a DVD DL after blowing compressed air thru the DVD slot. But the second DVD DL fails to burn with the ""The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)."
I was hoping that the upgrade to 10.6.x would solve both issues, but not so much.
Anyone else with the DVD DL problem experiencing FW problems?

The problems with some external FW burners under SL are fairly common, Robert. With some earlier drives (like my Pioneer 109 in an external box) often one can't even "see" the drive at all (though the bridge in the external box will show up under System Profiler) through FW, though it works fine under USB. With some later ones things like PRAM resets, or simply disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, will get them working. See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10070281 or some discussion of these issues and possible "workarounds".
As far as the general disc burning issue goes, other things that are worth considering include problems with a "fullish" hard drive with fragmented free space, and the actual media being used. What brands of DVD have you tried?
DL discs, generally seem much more finicky about dust and dirt than single layer when it comes to burning (and , of course, need much more free HD space) . Will it burn a single layer DVD or a CD without problems?
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Windows 7 - Files missing from network share after trying to burn and no data cached to be burned

I ran into an issue trying to burn some file from a network share using Windows 7 Home Professional.  I was trying to burn some .jpg files from a mapped network share drive using explorer.  Every time I would drag the files to be burned from
the share drive to the explorer screen to be burned, the files would disappear from the share.  To make things worse the files would not show up in the screen to be burned.  I was unable to locate any of the files on either of the systems when performing
a search after this took place.  I verified that the steps that I was taking to burn the files were the same as outlined on the Microsoft site.  No matter what I did to burn these files, they were deleted from the mapped network drive.
Below are the steps that I took that both resulted in the files being deleted as well as what I had to do to finally burn the disc.
Steps that resulted in files being deleted:
    1. Insert blank CD into drive.
    2. From prompt select burn using explorer (Mastered Format)
    3. Enter title and select with CD/DVD, click Next.
    4. Open a second explorer window, navigate to mapped network drive with files to be burned and snap next to explorer to be burned.
    5. Drag and drop the files from the share drive to CD.
This where the train would fall off the tracks every time.  I would receive a message that the file(s) no longer exist and if I wanted to continue.  From here the files would be deleted from the share drive.  The best part is that the files
would also NOT be locally stored to be burned.
Steps to burn share files WITHOUT delete:
Follow steps outlined above, but instead of just dragging and dropping the files as outlined in step 5 select the files from the network share location, right mouse select copy.  Then right mouse select paste in the explorer window to be burned.
I have tested this many times and every time ended up with the same problem.  At this point I am sure that there is a problem with the way that Windows 7 is performing the burn.  The system that I was using to burn is Windows 7 Home Professional
with all the patches and updates loaded.  The remote system is Windows XP Professional with all the patches and updates loaded.
    Thanks in advance

Yes, the problem is still continuing. However, after looking into as much of it as I can, I can confirm something that r.p.b_ started stumbling on. The files are deleted IF AND ONLY IF a user is using the built-in Windows 7 disc burning utility AND is dragging
and dropping the files to the drive from a network share; this doesn't happen locally. If you watch what happens in the native folder, the files are literally scrubbed from the drive as they are processed and added to the image. However, if you Right Click
on the files and copy them, then Right Click->Paste onto the drive, they remain. (The keyboard shortcuts also worked.) Also, 3rd party disc burning utilities function they way the should. (In other words, they don't delete the files.)
My speculation is that there's a bug in the coding that sees the network share as a temporary buffer file while the image is being prepared. Then, as the files are processed in what ever way is needed, the "temporary buffer" is being deleted. The result:
lost files on a network share. But, this is just speculation.

  • Quad G5 Issues - Adobe CS2

Hi, I've been using a quad g5 at work now and I might as well go back to the dual g5.
But I don't think its the quad g5's fault.
It's just the programs I run on it are pretty unstable, namely Adobe Creative Suite 2..
Photoshop fails to open files, crashes unexpectedly, and hangs for 10 minutes at a time, then suddenly recovers... the cpu reads "29%".. not near 100%.. as the spinning beach ball mocks me...
    This is NOT GOOD.
Illustrator hangs for a few minutes sometimes, and sometimes just crashes unexpectedly, I've looked on message boards and other posts at adobe about these problems but nobody seems to know what is wrong..
The most important thing to note here is that everything worked fine on the Dual G5, the programs work fine on my powerbook g5 too, I work the entire weekend without shutting down or force quitting anything... its just the quad, everything is installed the same too, I am wondering if it is a hardware issue with the Quad G5???
Anyone else have issues with CS2?
Also, could someone point me to a good benchmark program?
    Thanks for your imput!

Photoshop is particularly tough on marginal RAM.
You might try running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode overnight (Control + L before selecting "Extended Test"). This will not only test the RAM, but the logic board, the video card, and hard drive as well.
Also- memtest is an excellent RAM diagnostic. You can run it from within Single User Mode (restart with command + S) or use the front-end GUI rember with memtest.
memtest will often find faulty RAM on the first go around where sometimes Apple Hardware Test will not.
Be sure to repair permissions before and after any software install or update, Apple or third-party. (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility>Repair Permissions)
PshopTest is a good test routine to help improve Photoshop performance and optimization.
What other hardware is attached to the computer?
How much RAM and what kind is installed now?

  • Jpeg export size and quality issues

    aloha,
I use a lot of photos in articles on the web and size them to about 250 x 166 pixels. I just tested Aperture, Photoshop CS2, Fireworks 8, and Graphic Converter at levels of low, med, high or 30, 60, 80 or 4, 6, 9.
The best quality in terms of sharpness, clarity and color was PS CS2, with Aperture second. But Photoshop's files were 12, 24 and 36 k respectively, where the Aperture files were 72, 74 and 88k. In fact even at quality 0, the Aperture-generated jpeg was 64k. Fireworks were 4, 8 and 16k but surprisingly poor quality. Graphic converter was 116, 120, and 124k, with decent quality.
It appears that Adobe's engine is more adept at re-sizing and compressing (not entirely surprising). It leaves me with a bit of a workflow issue, since opening the files from Aperture into CS2 leaves me with a gigantic .tiff in Aperture I don't need.
Full size jpegs could be exported from Aperture to a folder, then opened in Photoshop, resized, and saved for the web. I can automate the Photoshop part of it, but would need some help automating the whole process.
Any information and suggestions folks have would be appreciated! I am curious as to why there is a floor on the Aperture jpeg sizes. Maybe I need to turn some option off? I'd love to keep my workflow within a single program.....
    mahalo,

What we need are the clip properties & sequence settings in Final Cut Express.  Your screenshot is from a Finder window.
It would appear you have a clip with nonstandard frame size (1366x768) in an H.264 file.  FCE cannot edit this material.  FCE is limited to specific codecs and frame sizes.  You need to convert your clip to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec. If it's highdef widescreen then convert it to QT/AIC 1920x1080i.  Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the source clip.
You also need to be using a matching Easy Setup in Final Cut Express.  If your source media file is QT/AIC 1920x1080i then you should select the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 Easy Setup in FCE -AND- then create a new sequence before importing your clip into FCE and placing it in your sequence (timeline)
