Burn cd from time machine
I need to back up some files on Time Machine disk to a CD. I am having no luck doing this. I create a Burn Folder and drag the files from Time Machine disk but it does not ever work, and sometimes locking up the whole system. Can this be done, and if so, how?
New iMac, OSX 10.9.4
Sorry, but I'm not sure I understand your question.
The best way to access your Time Machine backups is via the Time Machine application. If some backups are shown in the timeline, but can't be selected, it's because whatever's shown in the Finder window wasn't included on that backup. See the pink box in #15A of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
If the backups in question aren't shown in the timeline at all, try the (badly named, in this case) Browse Other Time Machine Disks option, per #17 in the above link.

I had backed up all my data to Time Machine, then securely deleted all data on my MacBook Pro and reinstalled Snow Leopard, prior to having Apple replace a faulty Airport card. I went through the normal restoration process from Time Machine, which took quite some time (about 2.5 hours for 240 Gb of data, including applications) without giving any indication of a problem. However, although the computer indicates that 240 Gb has been reinstalled on the hard drive, data such as photos, music, documents, IOS apps, movies, etc , is not showing up in the relevent application i.e. photos in iPhoto or mobile apps in iTunes. Even though application icons were visible in the dock, they would not open. I spent two days (one hour one day and five hours the next) at the Apple Genius Bar trying to find out what the problem was, without any success. No matter what was tried, no clear solution was evident so I was given a manual workaround to bring back banks of files one at a time, which has given me some workability. All data is obviously stored on the external hard drive, but restoration has not been successful. I have successfully used Time Machine to restore all data from a previous MacBook to my current MacBook Pro without any hitches whatsoever. The only difference this time is that I have two separate accounts on the Pro, which may be causing the problem. I can restore items manually from either account but they all go into one account. Also, when manually restoring photos or music from Time Machine, I am unable to select the relevent location for this data, i.e. iPhoto or iTunes. The only way I got these into the relevent application was by putting them into a burn folder or onto a thumb drive and then dragging them into the dock application. I am not very computer savvy and feel totally out of my depth to manually restore everything back to where it was before the clean install, particularly the two user accounts, which I would loke to have back again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quirks and problems after a restore from Time Machine
I had need to restore from Time Machine. It did the job, but it wasn't as easy as restoring from SuperDuper. Apple iTunes Store passwords and iTunes registrations were all lost, requiring me to re-enter passwords for the various users' authorizations to play music (and burning a user on each of those accounts.)
As I used the restored system, there were several things that weren't quite right and had to be fixed as I encountered them. One persistent issue is that Safari cookies aren't working. For all the sites that had cookies to recognize me and log me in, the cookies no longer work. I have to log into the sites on each visit now. It will remember nothing.
Is there a general purpose restore tonic that will fix all these quirks?
I'm thinking of going back to SuperDuper and just set it up back up to a different volume each night for a week to have a full week's worth and skip this Time Machine mess.In Safari, some of that password stuff is indeed handled by cookies from the various sites, but a lot of it is actually handled by the "autofill" function which fills in form fields (in this case name and password) with whatever you last used there -- independent of any cookies.
While running Safari, go to Safari / Preferences... Go to Security. Be sure that you are allowing cookies to be received in the first place.
Then go to Autofill. See if you have the item checked to allow recording and automatic filling of "User names and passwords". You can edit the list of them to see what's currently in there.
If this doesn't do it for you, you might want to try selecting Safari / Reset Safari... from the menu bar. The panel will allow you to select which data items to reset. -
Trying to backup iPhoto pics from Time Machine
I need some serious help figuring out how to get my photos onto CDs for backup purposes.
BACKGROUND: My laptop is running out of space, causing programs to run slowly. The Mac Genius at the local Apple store recommended I clear up space by cleaning up my iPhoto library which has photos dating back several years. Because I have the entire hard drive backed up on my external hard drive and accessible through Time Machine, here is what I did:
1. Deleted all Events prior to 1/08, thus keeping only 2 years of photos on my laptop. As a result, the available memory was barely affected since--as I discovered--this only moved the photos to the iPhoto trash.
2. So I started "restoring" events one by one and moving them to a folder on my desktop so I could burn CDs as backup.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED:
1. All photo information (time & date stamp) has been lost in this process.
2. Restoring photos one album or event at a time is time consuming and causing photos to take up double the space! Running out of memory really fast!
So, I deleted all the photos (4,000 of them) from my iPhoto trash.
NEW PROBLEM: Yes, I can restore photos from the Time Machine (which means they import to today's iPhoto Library), but when I try to copy them from iPhoto into the desktop folder to burn a CD, the program tells me the photos have been deleted and they cannot be moved out of iPhoto!!!
Okay, so how do I create a CD backup of my photos? It's all well and good that I have these photos on an external hard drive, but how do I actually use them in the future? If I want to print out these photos or share them with others, how will I be able to actually "get them"???
Is there a way to burn a CD directly from Time Machine? Will it keep my photos in albums or events so as to easily sort them later?
Please help! I'm terrified I have lost 3 years of our family history because of this! Also, I cannot use my iMovie program at all because there is not enough memory available.this only moved the photos to the iPhoto trash.
Didn't you use the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu option to remove the photos from the library and the hard drive? (Deleting more that about 50 at a time can cause iPhoto to freeze).
All photo information (time & date stamp) has been lost in this process
To keep the metadata and other information the photos have to be exported out of iPhoto with the options to "Include title and keywords" and Location Information".
If you want to export directly to a CD try using iPhoto to Disk. It will keep titles and such but I'm not sure about other metadata. Otherwise export each Event to a folder and burn that folder to disk in the Finder.
You can recover some real estate on your boot drive by: using Monolingual to remove all of the language modules except English and American English. I freed up nearly 1 GB of space the first time I ran it. For optimum safety and performance at least 10 GB of free space (20GB if you use iDVD) should be available on the boot drive.
With the low cost of external FW hard drives you can add a second external HD to the mix and run your full library off of it. Then add a smaller library with just the photos you might want to take with you if you travel with your MBP. You can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy albums or events between libraries and keep all metadata, Faces and Places intact. -
I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.
Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML. -

How restore aol sent mac mail from time machine?
I am using mac mail and an imap connection to aol. I also have a time capsule and use time machine for backing up. Yesterday I stopped receiving incoming mail in mac mail and tried deleting the aol account in mac mail and then setting it up fresh. I was shocked to find that my 25,000 AOL sent emails did not restore! I was told by an apple genius bar rep several months ago that once mail was on my machine that the emails would NEVER be lost. Apparently this is not true. When I open mac mail and go into my time capsule using time machine, however, do not see the SENT mail icon under AOL--it goes away? When I try to restore the aol mail from the day before the incident the only thing that comes up is the one Sent Mail mssg that I sent AFTER the deleting and restoring of my AOL account in mac mail. The only relevant post I have found is the one below which was posted in 2008. Please let me know there is a way to get back my sent messages. I can't get them directly from the aol server because the server does not save messages that are sent from any client but AOL. Thanks.

Restoring Apple Mail and Your Emails from Time Machine
filed under: How-To tags: mail, timemachine Tuesday, January 29, 2008, 11:31 am
UPDATE (25 August 2010): Please note that this post is well over 2 years old and as Tim pointed out in the comments below, this method may not be the best solution for restoring emails. According to his restore efforts, changes where made to the timestamp from the date in which they were received to the date in which they were restored. I have not tested this myself.
The hard drive on my PowerBook completely died the other day, but I luckily had been running Time Machine backups since upgrading to Leopard. (I wasn’t all that ****** off seeing as I was eager for an excuse to replace my wimpy 40Gb hard drive with a new 160Gb drive). I fumbled a bit, looking for a specific Apple Mail restore tool. I knew where all my emails lived, but I thought that Apple would have a specific means for restoring apps like Mail. So I created this mini-tutorial on how to restore Apple Mail from Time Machine simply because I could not find this method elsewhere.
Supposedly, If you attach your Time Machine backup drive, open Apple Mail then launch the Time Machine application, you are presented with historical views of Apple Mail. This did not work for me, the historical views were just blank, so the steps below do not take this approach.
Restoring Your Emails from a Time Machine Backup
Warning: If you have already setup Apple Mail with your accounts and preferences, this will negate ALL your doings.
Note: This process will restore all your email accounts, preferences, passwords, smart mailboxes, etc.
The How-To
Before loading Time Machine, open the Finder and navigate to Home Folder (username) -> Library. In there will be a folder name “Mail”. Rename it to “Mail (default)” (Select the folder then hit the Return key to rename).
Mount your Time Machine Backup Drive (ahem, plug it in).
Control + Click the Time Machine Application and chose “Browse Other Time Machine disks…”. This, of course, brings up the historical view of your backups.
Go back to your most recent backup (2nd window back) and navigate to Home Folder (username) -> Library. Select the “Mail” folder and click the restore button (bottom right).
Once the restore is completed, open Apple Mail and you will be presented with an import wizard (below). Simply follow through the prompts and you will be good to go.
That’s it!UPDATE (20-January-2009): After step 4., also restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plistThanks Jon C.
If you have multiple mail accounts, you should also restore the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file as well. This will ensure all of your account settings are imported. – Jon C.

I could get back my 170 000 mails in 5 hours thanks to this post, after having tried for few hours without success…BrunoDon't try to restore the file; restore the Note. Go in Mail to the mailbox where the note belongs. Enter Time Machine from there and step back until you find the Note.

After migrating data from Time Machine, some of my photos are not showing up in iPhoto LIbrary view. I get a 'dashed rectangle." When I click on it I get ' ! in a Triangle" When I click on that, I actually can see the photo. I want to see all my photos in 'Library' view, and I can't figure out how these photos seem to be arbitrarily hidden. Help, please.
Try these for the first attempt:
First be sure to have a backup copy of the library if you already don't have one.

System recovery from time machine after disk crash
Hi there,
recently I am a little unluky with my backup strategy. Here is my latest issue - I am glad if anyone has hints or advice.
On my macbook pro (mid 2009, originally SL) updated till the latest version of Mavericks I recently had a hard disc crash. I replaced the hard drive and wanted to restore my system (and data) from my time machine backup. This Backup is encrypted (in case this gives a hint for something).
What I did is I insert the Snow leopard disk, boot from it and first formated the new HD to the suggested standard for intel based MACs and then chose the option to restore from a time machine backup. I found the time capsule, connected with password, found the backed up files with date and tried to install.
First attemp failed.
Second attemp succed after 10h
Then with the mandatory reboot the system didn't start but stopped with:
panic(cpu 1 caller...
So I decided to install the SL system and try to restore from there in whatever way. Did that and 1 hour later the installation was successfully - Reboot - and then the computer asked for my Log in data (with my Log in Name - which I so far did not set on this installation or on this disk - very suprised. More suprised my password (which I use for 4 years now) did not work.
so back to option 1 try to restore from Time machine.
Ahead of that I reset the PRAM . Now I choose a backup version of an earlier date. This time the installation couldn't be finished but I got the log file.
I couldn't attach the file and didn't want to post it over severl pages...(is there a good way for that, only found adding pictures?)
Well - that's where I am stuck...
Any help is apreciated very much.Thank you Eric for your fast answer.
this worked and now I have a running SL system. I guess I try to install maverics first and then use the emigration assistent to recover my data.
Still its a pitty that the time machine backup didn't do what it was supposed to. The workarround is very timeconsuming and leaves some concerns about my data and the future safety of time machine backups.

How to restore from Time Machine after HD change?
Hi I am having my hard drive replaced due to the issue with the Seagate hard drives. I have a Lacie NAS which is working with Time Machine. I wanted to know, once I have my iMac back with a new hard drive, how do I restore everything from Time Machine?
ThanksHave a look at this thread I posted in earlier and the various links in Pondini's excellent Time Machine resource I linked to:

I just got a new 256GB SSD drive for my mac, I want to import my data from time machine backup, but its larger than 256GB since it used to be on my old optical drive. How can I import my latest backup keeping out some big files on the external drive?
Hello Salemr,
When you restore from a Time Machine back up, you can tell it to not transfer folders like Desktop, Documents. Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures and Public. Take a look at the article below for the steps to restore from your back up.
Move your data to a new Mac

Lost mail rules when upgrading to ML, can't restore from time machine
Hi,
I've installed mountain lion and restored from time machine and mail rules were not there. There's only news from apple.
I tried to restore the rules myself (MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup) but when opening mail rules were not there yet. Nevertheless, i can add rules manually, so if there was a way of looking at the past rules I could just copy them (though it's not the best way).My rules are still there, so perhaps Apple support speak with resource forked tongue.
Comparing an old (pre ML) rules file from 20th June with the ML one, the differences are:
The file name was: MessageRules.plist, the ML one is SynchedRules.plist. Both are in my V2 folder, but the old Rules have been copied (by Mail, not me) into the new SynchedRules file.
In the old file, for each item (Rule) the first line was Active (Key) String (Type) 1 (Value). In the ML file, this line is no longer there, so the first line is AllCriteriaMustBeSatisfied.
You can see these differnces in the "preview" part of Finder Show Info, if you have the two files to compare.
Thus, just copying and renaming the old Rules file probably won't work, because of this difference. Mail probably just makes a new file because the copied file isn't as expected. It should be possible to edit the old plist file to remove the "Active" line, and rename it to SynchedRules.plist (but see below). The top is slightly different, just below <dict>, as this relates to the Active line. There are a couple of lines at the bottom that aren't in the new file.
The "Active" line that has gone is now in a file called RulesActiveState.plist. This file is just a list of RuleIds from the SynchedRules.plist (like this:
AC6F6611-FF61-4AA6-9682-BA100EFAC233)
Doing this does sound rather tedious, but might be quicker than manually re-entering blocked email addresses etc. to replicate old rules. As plist files are in xml format, it should be possible to use a text editor to delete the unwanted "Active" line from the message rules list by Find & Replace All (with nothing). All this could then be copied to the "SynchedRules.plist. You would need to copy the RuleIds into the RulesActiveState.plist as well.
Make a copy of the files first just in case... -
Mail.app 4.1 does not work with 10.6.1 after restore from time machine
After I restored my complete system from time machine backup using the original snow leopard install disc. My Mail.app won't start up anymore. It shows me the message:
"You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X"
"You have Mail version 4.1 (1076/1075.2). It can't be used Mac OS X Version 10.6.1 (Build 10B504). For more information, click the Help button"
I don't understand the error message as mail 4.1 was installed as part of Mac OS X 10.6.1?
Detailed event log:
2009-11-03 06:00 AM: Backup succeeded successfully via time machine on my time capsule
2009-11-03 11:00 AM: Original laptop was broken. (Screen didn't work anymore)
2009-11-03 03:00 PM: Got a temporary new Macbook Pro from my System Administrator.
2009-11-03 09:00 PM: Successfully restored complete system on new temporary macbook using time machine with data of my time capsule. Everything looked the same (login image, installed applications, etc...). But when I tried to start Mail.app it gave me the above message.
Can someone help me with this???
Kind Regards,
NielsI've seen two possible solutions to this:
1. Easier, but less likely to work - try to start mail from the Finder, rather than the Dock. If it works, replace the Dock Mail with the Finder one.
2. More probably the solution: download and reinstall the 10.6.1 combo update. I know you shouldn't need to after a TM restore but ... -
Delete outlook file from time machine?
am trying to install a back up of Outlook Main Identity from time machine. it stops running midway, saying there is a read/write error (Error code -36) and that the offending file is ###_#####.olk14MsgAttach, which appears to be an attachment to an email. Can this file be deleted from Outlook on the backup disk, with out messing up the overall reinstallation of Main Identity? Thank you.
Ewen,
Let me make my self more clear.
Because of the Apple KB article regarding Aperture and Time Macine, that's exactly why i chose to EXCLUDE my aperture.library file from time machine.
Please don't read any negative tone in this, i'm just trying to explain myself.
But hind sight is 20/20, so i was looking for a way to delete the old previous version of the aperture.library that was sitting on my backup time machine drive (useless taking up space)
I apologize for not searching out that KB article, but i didn't think i'd have to do that. I assumed Apple would know how to have Aperture play nice with Time Machine....
Any way all is good. we're all educated now
