Burn CD's in Solaris 10?

Is there a way to burn CD's in Solaris 10? I've read about mkisofs, but from what I understand, that only makes the iso and doesn't actually burn to a disk. Could it be as simple as dd?
Thanks,
Andy

and cdrw which is really useful if you have an ISO, just run cdrw -i <iso>

  • How do I burn CDs of the Solaris 9 ISO Images

    Hello All!
I have downloaded the Solaris 9 (SPARC) ISO Images, from sun.com. Now the issue is how do I use them, i.e. burn them on a CDR. First I have unzipped the images using WinZIP, and then used the ISO Buster to unpack the image files. But when I do that, I get only a few hundred kilobytes, whereas the ISO image itself are of 637 MBs.

I don't know if it is help You, because i am in a the same phase as You, but i have had similar problem, whan i used the Windows download software for TAR-s, You must use Sun Download Manager or the other certified SW or download (if it is possible) from machine, where is Solasis installed. SDM is able unzip the image into .iso file. I am afraid, that in .zip files are some sequences of data (bytes or bits) unsupported on Windows, who confuses the programs.

  • Solaris Express Login Problem

    Hello,
I'm a complete rookie with Sun & Solaris, so any help someone could offer would be greatly appreciated!
I have a SunBlade 1500 (SPARC) that I purchased from university surplus. The hard drive was wiped, so I needed to install an OS. I don't have a DVD burner, so I downloaded Solaris Express Text Install, because it was the only OS I could find that would work with SPARC & could be burned to CD. Installation went fine, & the hard drive now boots to the disk. But here is my problem:
At bootup, I am asked to login, and I don't know what to do. During install, I had to make several entries for passwords & such. The "computer name" is solaris, and the "root password" is sunblade1500. I entered Bugs Bunny for "real name", Bugs for "user name", and bugs123 for "user password". I've tried all different combinations of these when prompted for login, but the only ones that seem to work and not give a "login incorrect" message are when I use either "Bugs" or "Bugs Bunny" as login, and "bugs123" as password.
Here is verbatim text of what the screen shows when I try to login with these entries:
    solaris console login: Bugs
    Password: bugs123
Last login: Wed Aug 17 14:06:41 on console
    Oracle Corporation SunOS 5.11 snv_151a November 2010
    Bugs@solaris:~$
After the last line (Bugs@solaris:~$), it just sits there with a prompt for me to enter something to go further, and I don't know what to enter. I've tried root, boot, startx and none of those work. What am I doing wrong, please? Thank you VERY much!

You are logged in as the user bugs* and the system is sitting at a command-line OS prompt.

    You pulled the text-only distribution.
It's a full UNIX but you won't have a GUI.
The install files for the GUI are too much to fit on a CD.
I think it may be time for you to go buy some books.
You can also consider crawling Oracle's site for Solaris documentation.
    Start here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris/overview/index.html
You can also glance at the documentation for your system.

  • Burning CDs/missing filenames

    HI eveybody,
I downloaded oracle 10G for solaris on a windows machine and burn it on a CD,when insert the CD in Solaris 10 x86,it seems that the file names on the CDs it automount automatically are changed (you can only read the first 8 charaters of the filename)while if you put the cd back in windows it read the complete filename ??
is there a specific way to burn the cds for SOLARIS?or its just normal?

Well, you probably burned the CD with 8+3 length
filenames (meaning their names are 8 before and 3
after the dot), the reason to why you see the full
names in Windows is simply that the CD includes a
translation-table that maps the 8+3 names to the
    original names.
Solaris doesn't use the translation table, so it
    displays the files real name.
If you want to see the full names under Solaris, you
probably need to alter the way you burn your CD.
Does this make sense? If not i hope that someone who
is a bit more pedagogical can explain this.
.7/M.I have a CD made on a windows system which my Solaris 10 (11/06) Blade1000 does not display the long names, when it displays properly by default on my OS4 Amiga and OSX iBook. Example: Solaris (closew~1.too), Amiga (closewo.tool), iBook (closewo.tool)
If those operating systems can see the proper names by default, why cannot Solaris see them under ANY circumstances?

  • Can't boot 250 Server w/Solaris10 free download

Hi, very new to Sun/Solaris. Attempting to fresh install Solaris 10 on Sun 250 Server. Downloaded all 4 .iso images from Sun website, extracted files, and burned to CD. From OpenBoot, here is message:
(### commented comments are my own ###)
    # here I am starting server w/CD in drive:
    #<Sun banner>
Boot device: disk File and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
#seconds later, here I am booting
    #from command line:
    ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@6,0:f File and args:
Bad magic number in disk label
    Can't open disk label package
    Can't open boot device
    ok
    #end of OpenBoot messages
So, the machine appears to begin boot, but fails. I have examined the files at CD root level. They are:
    SOLARIS_10 (a directory)
    .CTTOC
    .INSTALL_CONFIG
    .SLICEMAPFILE
    _VOLUME.INF
    COPYRIGHT
    JDS_THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME
Being new to Sun, I'm guessing that the file named .INSTALL_CONFIG might be the boot file? But this file is 100% empty. I have downloaded the disc 01 .iso file twice from the Sun website, same thing each time.
Any help graciously appreciated. My goal is to get the server booted & running on Solaris 10.
If nothing else, if I just knew the name/location of the boot file(s), I might be able to figure things out.
    Thank you!

Yes, I've successfully burned many sparc bootable solaris install cdroms with cdrw on both sparc and x64/x86 solaris. Assuming the image download isn't corrupted there probably is nothing wrong with your host.
We only release floppys for x64/86 installs. You can also setup jumpstart or JET on another host and net boot the e250.
Having the ISO image you can burn a bootable Sparc CD
with any program that is able to burn ISO images to
CD.That's not completely correct. You can only use a burning program that doesn't care about the size of the cdrom and just lays down the iso. The sparc bootable image is larger than a standard burnable size because of the added boot image layed out in the vtoc. I've used cdrw -C -i filename. The -C option allows the burning program to ignore the file size limits and use the raw iso. Google for "vtoc bootable cdrom site:www.sun.com" and look at the blueprints and whitepaper pdfs for more information on how to build a bootable cdrom image.
Last night I created a Sparc bootable cdrom from Nero 6.3.0.
    Open Nero,
Get to the "burn iso to disk"
After selecting the iso open the configuration icon
            Select the General Tab
    Uncheck the following:
Check for correct disc format before burning
                    Check joliet filenames before burning
            Select Expert Features tab
    Check:
X Enable overburn Disc-at-once burning (read the notes below)
82min 0 sec 0 frmMine was set to 82 minutes by default.
A word of caution, if you create you're own isos and if you don't re-enable these settings to what they were, you may burn bad cdroms.
I put the disk in a solaris host, with volume managment running it mounted an Solaris 10 u1 Sparc as the following:

  • Creating the dvd with 9-06 files.

Hi, I have just downloaded the 5 parts for the 9-06 x86 dvd. After applying this command:
    cat sol-nv-b46-x86-dvd-iso-a.zip sol-nv-b46-x86-dvd-iso-b.zip sol-nv-b46-x86-dvd-iso-c.zip sol-nv-b46-x86-dvd-iso-d.zip sol-nv-b46-x86-dvd-iso-e.zip > Solaris-9-06-dvd.iso
All appears well, until I go to burn the dvd image (Solaris-9-06-dvd.iso) the file is 2.4 GB, Gnome reports that the file is not a valid disk image. I am using SLED 10 version of Linux and have burnt a few dvd's with just a right click on the file and select the "write to disk" option.
Anyone know what's going on here?
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Cheers from Peter.

I think you need to unzip each file before you try to concatenate them.
That's what seems to be stated in the Download and Burning Instructions page at Sun:

  • Burning CD for Solaris 10 x86

am in the process if installing Solaris 10 on the Intel platfrom. I downloaded all 4 files sol-10-GA-x86-v&#91;1-4&#93;-iso.iso and burned them onto CDs. The first CD worked fine and most of the OS is installed. Then I got prompted for the second CD. when the CD was inserted, I got the following error "The disk you inserted is not the correct CD/DVD for Solaris 10 Software 2 for x86 Platforms". When I checked the disk volume name, it got truncated from "sol-10-GA-x86-v2-iso" to "sol-10-GA-x86-v2". How can I recover from this problem? I also noticed that my SPARC Solaris 9 CDs contain a file named _VOLUME, which cantains the disk label information. Should I have added the file to the CD along with the iso image?  <br />

I had no problems with the installation, perhaps you have to burn a new CD with the unzipped CD-image.
The correct volume name should be: sol_10_106_x86_2
there is a .volume.inf file, containing
    VI"SOL_10_106_X86_2"

  • Issue burning Solaris 10 installation CDs

    Dear all,
    I downloaded Solaris 10 1/06 installation-CDs 1-5 from sun hp.
I extracted all 5 CDs with winzip
Im not able to burn any of these CDs because the image-file cannot be identified by the burners I used (Nero, Ulead) in Windows XP.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    thx & rgds,
    Jochen

if the 5 files you downloaded are named:
    sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a
    sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b
    sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c
    sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d
    sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e
its a DVD ISO split to 5 parts.
For windows open run and type cmd, go the the folder that contains the 5 files then type "copy /b sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e solaris.iso" without the quotes this wil copy the 5 files to one file named "solaris.iso"
Now you can Burn the DVD :)

  • Is it possible to install Solaris 10 without burning it onto CDs?

    December 16, 2006
    Hai!
Have downloaded Solaris 10 OS, x86, for downloading onto WINDOWS ONLY Platform - Solaris 10 11/06 Operating System. They are Solaris 10 11/06 x86 CD 1 to CD5.
I don't have a CD writer or DVD writer to burn the software onto CDs and then install it. Kindly let me know if it is possible to install the software without burning it onto CDs.
    Best Regards,
    Kartheek D. N.

Without a jumpstart server you would need to burn the DVD or at least the first CD, then you'ld boot of the first CD and install the initial OS. Once the OS have rebooted after the first install, you can install the software available on the remaining four cd's by mounting them with "lofiadm", "mount" and running the installer on the CD-images.
If you have another Sun system, you can create a jumpstart from the ISO files in a similar way, there is an infodoc which describes how to create an image from the first CD.

  • Burning Solaris 8 sparc CD

    Hi,
I have downloaded Sun Solaris 8 binaries. I have unzipped installable CD image using win zip 8.0. Only 1 file came out of that. But can I know how I burn the bootable CD using HP cd writer . What is there about ISO image. Should I have to rename the file to *.iso.
    Please help

    Hello,
Each zip contains 1 file. After unzipping the file, add a .iso extension to each one and run EZ CD Creator (The software that was included with your HP CD Writer). Select Create CD from Image in the FIle menu and select the .iso file. Once the images have been burned, they become bootable. For more info:
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/download.html
However, if your systerm is unable to boot from CDROM, you need to create a boot disk.

Copyright 1983-2000 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
Then next thing displayed is a cursor flashing in the upper left corner of the screen with the entire screen being white. I never get the next line as indicated in the install docs ("Configuring /dev and /devices").
I have tried using DOS fdisk to create a 24 MB partition set active and formatted. That seems to work fine to boot into DOS, but I can't seem to get past this part of the install.
    Any suggestions?

    Just an idea:
After installing the latest kernel + usb patches a system built around
an ASUS P2B showed similar behaviour: Soon after the screen is
cleared during the boot sequence the machine hung. Before installing
these patches the machine was running without problem.
The problem was a disabled USB IRQ in the bios setup. The system has
no USB peripherals connected, so the USB IRQ was disabled in the
    BIOS (in an
attempt to free some IRQs - which is actually nonsense in a PCI
system; some old habit from good old ISA PCs). Re-enabling the
USB IRQ in the BIOS fixed the solaris boot problem. Probably the
solaris 8 USB drivers had detected the USB bus and started scanning
for devices there; and that hung the machine due to non working USB controller IRQs.
Maybe you have a similar problem...

  • HELP! 64-bit JRE for JDK1.4/Solaris --crash and burn.

I'm trying to use the 64-bit version of Solaris j2se 1.4
    I can't even run HelloWorld. I see:

I'm trying to run this as cleanly as possible.
    * There are no extra security providers installed.
    * The classpath is set to .
    * The install was not completely successful.
    I was forced to link
    jre/lib/sparcv9/libjvm.so --> ./server/libjvm.so
because there is no "client" directory where the link
is set in the ordinary (lib/sparc) directory.

    Followup:
What kernel / Jumbo patch level is required to run
the 64-bit jvm? I suspect that we are using a much-to-old version, but I would like this suspicion verified.
    thanks,

  • Solaris 10 installation on x86 problem: reboot

Having downloaded and burned 4 cd iso images I tried to install Solaris 10 on my system. But - on the very beginning it (the installer) reboots my computer and this happens every time I try to install - a few seconds after I see "loading kernel/unix...". My configuration is:
    Athlon XP 1700
    256DDR
    20GB HDD
    CDRW
    Matrox G200 8MB AGP

    Hello Deepak,
How much output are you getting to any screen, normally out of the box the build will only attempt configure the first screen attached to the system (laptop screen). The LCD TFT may have to be configured afterwards using files such as xorg.conf.
If you are hoping to achieve dual head then take a look at the following URL to give you an insight it whats happening.
