Burn disc doesn't highlight

I made my first project the other day and want to burn to a DVD-R. The little spin wheel icon doesn't highlight and when I go to the drop down menu the "burn disc" isn't highlighted. A friend who knows Mac's and has worked a lot with computers actually set the project up, but he couldn't figure out what was wrong either.
My project is a slideshow with some music attached. There are about 55 pictures. Since the music lasts about 13 minutes the slideshow does the same.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks

  • IDVD doesn't burn discs properly!

    Hi all,
First of all I'm new to this so if I've missed out any info please let me know. I've always downloaded a lot of films and in the past, have had no problem burning them to discs since I got my mac in 2006. I used to burn them using the "Create New Project" and add in movie, sort menu's etc, but after a while I realised there's no point in all that cause it takes longer and all I really want is the movie on a disc anyway. So I started using the "One Step DVD from Movie" and I would make the discs that way, which I never had any problems with either. I hadn't made any DVDs for a while, possibly 3 or 4 months and when I tried the other day it seems to go through the movie ok, converting the video and audio and then goes to burn the disc, which is where I have the problem. It normally goes to writing video out and things like that but the last couple of times I have tried to burn discs it goes to that as usual then spits out the DVD before going through the entire process. I then have to cancel the process and the DVD I was trying to burn is no longer usable because it seems to have written parts of the movie to it, but not the full movie so it's not possible to watch on a DVD player or even in the mac DVD player. It's very strange, I don't get any error message or anything coming up, it just spits out the DVD and then iDVD freezes and I have to force quit out of it. I'm wondering if it's maybe the version of iDVD that's the problem. Obviously as I've not used the iDVD for a while it will have been automatically updated via the Software Update which I run at least once a week. I'm unsure of the version the last time I used it to make a DVD but the version I have now seems to be the latest one for my system (version 6.0.4). After a few unsuccessful tries at making the DVDs using the One Step DVD, I tried to do it by creating a project first, but it seems to do the exact same thing, go through the whole process (which takes about 2 hours, sometimes longer) and then burn only part of it then I can't use the disc again. Please help, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for quick reply and I'm sorry about the long message, I was just trying to explain everything that had happened. Not touched the media at all since I got it, I didn't change any settings or make anything different from when I used to burn discs before. I have about 10GB free on my mac at this moment, but at the time I had about 30GB free, maybe just under. I have been reading other posts on here about discs not burning properly and a couple of the things that have been said is to not have any other applications open, which I didn't and have more than 15GB space free, which I always have had when burning discs.

  • ITunes no longer burns discs

Hi, I came here in support of a new issue that has arose.
Heres the scoop: I have already created a playlist, click burn disc. It starts up fine as it has no errors when creating the disc. It then initializes, and says that it is burning the first track. However here is where the problem arises.
The status bar never moves, its just keeps saying burning the first track. The drive is spinning, sounding like it is burning regularly. So I let it sit for a while, come back, still the same exact place and the drive spinning like its burning. So I then click cancel after about 30 min. Of course it doesn't cancel, or won't eject so I force quit iTunes, and the disc stops spinning.
Then, once it quits, the disc starts spinning again and appears on the desktop, and iTunes reopens. The disc shows the right amount of tracks and the correct times, but when I go to play them, its just no sound.
I then try it again after restarting, and I get the same result. I even try changing the disc burn speeds and still the same result. Now I'm tired of wasting cds so I've come for help.
Some other details: I have recently updated to 10.5, before that I have been able to burn cds in iTunes with no such problem. Also, whenever I try burning unsuccessfully, more and more of my hard drive space gets eaten up and doesn't come back even when quitting iTunes until I restart. The drive is a dvd writer, but isn't factory installed, in the past versions of X I had to use patch burn to burn from the ilife programs, but its no longer needed in 10.5.

A friend this morning says that he thinks that iTunes has put a DRM (Digital Rights Management) code on any music that is imported into iTunes, whether it is purchased from the iTunes store, ripped off a commercial CD, or even copied from your friend's homemade CD, and that's why after some time is elapsed, you can no longer make a music CD from playlists in iTunes. He compared it to Rhapsody, which allows you to listen to your downloaded music as long as you still pay your monthly Rhapsody bill. Could this be true?!?! I can still make an MP3 disc, or backup my iTunes library to a DVD, but I can no longer make a music CD. Like others have described, iTunes starts the process, checks the playlist length, initializes the blank music CD, and then stalls, saying it is writing the first track, but will say that all day. One has to force quit iTunes to get the disc out. It shows the correct disc title and track names when inserted in a player with this capability, but all one hears is static-like noise when the disc is played.

  • ITunes Won't Recognize Optical Drive / Can't Burn Discs.

Hi. I’m having some problems w/ an installation of iTunes on a Windows 64 bit PC.  Specifically, when iTunes is installed, Windows 7 no longer recognizes the optical drive, and I can't burn discs via iTunes.  I’ve attempted to implement all the solutions identified here,

  • Burning CDs doesn't work?

Burn settings are on Audio/max speed possible, with iTunes 8 for Windows. Using TDK CD-R discs. Verified that the CD device both reads & writes using other media and CDs. iTunes command to Burn Disc works fine, full disc burns, is "finished." But then -- the new CD won't play anywhere -- not in Windows Media, not on another CD player. It doesn't even show as having anything on it in Windows Explorer, and a straight CD player can't find any tracks. It plays just fine in iTunes, though, and shows all the tracks. Anybody?

    Hello,
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
    Might try Burn.app...

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Problems burning disc on mac

I bought some 700mb, 80 minute empty discs to create a playlist for a friend, first off, I inserted the disc and highlighted all the songs I wanted in iTunes (31) and dragged them onto the disk, It then bought up a window for the disk with all the songs in place, and in the order I wanted them in. So I went ahead and pressed burn disc and it done so, I then put it in a cd player to test it, where I discovered there were only 28 of the 31 songs I chose, and they were not in the order I put them in by, frustrated I took another CD and tried a different method, burning the disc direct from the playlist on iTunes. Here it did not allow me to burn as many, only 22 intact, but I did so anyway, and had the same problem, only 18 of 22 were on the disc and they were muddled again, is there anyway to resolve this to get as many songs as possible and make sure they all go on, and in order!? thanks

Put the songs you want into a regular iTunes playlist, in the order you want them.
Make sure the play time is comfortably under 80 minutes.  Aim for 75 minutes or less.
Make sure all the files are accessible on your hard drive and are playable.  Not missing, and not in the cloud.
Then do the burn, setting disc format to "audio CD."

  • Skipped audio files when burning disc in iDVD.

I burned a DVD using iDVD version 7.0. The audio files sound perfect on the computer but on the disc there are skipped areas noted in three different audio files. I did try different discs and burned discs on both my laptop and my desktop. I have used this program before but never encountered this problem.  Any tips? Thanks

    Hi
    My notes on this.
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • "The Attempt to burn disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser

I was trying to burn a cd the other day and it failed and this massage came up.
"The attempt to burn disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
does anyone know how to get rid of this or know how to fix it?

In my experience the problem is random. Sometimes I burn with no problem. This morning my first burn worked fine. Then I had 4 failures in a row. Tried changing nothing. Tried changing burn speed. Tried quitting itunes, etc. Nothing always works so I assume that my manipulations are having no effect even though eventually it works. I am now having a sucessful burn. Thank goodness that it does not ruin the blank but it seems to be increasing in frequency. I used to have the problem once and then could burn 4-5 successfully. Now I've had 3 successes our of 8-9 tries.
Why doesn't apple address this problem? I see hundreds of posts with the same problem. Many are archived. Some like this thread claim to answered. But the problem is that, in my experience, the problem comes and goes. Sometimes I have sucess without changing anything after a failure. Today I quit iTunes and when I started it up again it failed once and now its just finished a sucessful burn. I'm burning the same playlist each time of unprotected music but I notice no difference whether I'm burning purchased music, ripped music, downloaded music, aiff, aac, acc protected, mpeg or a mixture of same.
My sucessful burn was at 6X. Now I'm having a sucessful burn at maximum possible (6X takes too long!). Two in row!
I am using tiger 10.4.5 1 ghz powerpc g4 512 mb ddr sdram with about 10 gigs free on the hard drive it that's of any relevance.
Just realized that if I can count to 30 before the intialization goes to writing it is going to fail. So what? I don't know, can't stand the suspense.

  • Burning disc with Finder

After I successfully burned a DVD in finder, every other burn job doesn't work! I get an error saying something along the lines of a drive error. But then when I use Toast it works perfectly. Anyone else?

I've noticed the same thing. The disc burns and verify seems to reject the first disc burn, but passes the second.
However, I've used the first burn copy on a couple of different machines and it seems to be ok. So I would say that the verify is unnecessarily rejecting first burns.

  • Burning disc freeze

if i try to burn a playlist in itunes onto a recordable cd (the same ones i used successfully for a long time) the process goes all the way through until it says ´burning disc....finishing´and there the whole thing gets stuck.it does not finish, the cd doesn´t come out,i have to restart the notebook to get it back and it is not playable.
does anybody have an idea how i can solve this problem? .

somehow this morning the cd´s burn alright again.maybe my other activities yesterday interfered with the burning process.i didn´t download the itunes 7.6 version anyway, because i don´t need it.so the update to the 7.6 version cannot be the problem in my case.
problem is not solved, but i don´t have it anymore currently.
    thanx for responding.

  • Problems with New Burn Folder and burning discs

Hello, I find that my mini doesn't wish to burn discs. If I Create New Burn Folder and dump stuff into it, it won't accept the blank discs I insert as true blanks; I get a "insert blank disc" command. These are just standard cd-r and dvd-r discs. Nor is the Burn command available through the menus. And beyond that, once I have the disc in, the eject commands are disabled! I can't get the disc out.
The only way I've been able to burn is to insert the blanks first, then drag stuff onto the disc; the Burn Folders just don't work and then I can't even eject the dratted things. Can anyone comment or help---
    Thanks,
    John

Furthermore, if you get info on the burn folder it only will give the size of the aliases. Does anyone know how to find the actually size of all the contained files?

  • The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.

When trying to burn a CD, I'm getting an error that reads:The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.  I experienced this message before and took my Macbook in to the store and the the genius was stumped but when he tried one of his CD's it burned fine to he concluded that the problem was in the CD's NOT the Macbook or program  HOWEVER, months later, I'm having the same issue using the NEW CD's.  Does anyone have any information about this?

    3 methods to fix this:
The first is to reset pram
at boot up hold four keys down till you hear 3 chimes:
    command(apple)=option+p+r
release keys and it will now reboot.
The second is to reset nvram
at boot up hold four keys down:
    command(apple)+option+o+f
    a black screen will appear
    now type: reset-nvram
    click enter
    now type: reset-all
    click enter
    it will now reboot
The third is to open system preferences.
    go to international
under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to english
make sure "word break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart.
I hope this helps you as it certainly did me. :^)

  • I am getting an error every time i try to burn a playlist. The error reads The Attempt to burn disc failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error.

Try a different brand of discs.  Try restarting your computer.

  • Burning disc image with encryption

I've been burning disc images thru idvd's interface for a while. I just noticed in disk utility the option of encrypting the dvd (AES-128), to prevent access to contents, files, etc., which might be useful when making customer copies.
Is this something anyone is using?

Are you referring to data dvd's?
To the best of my knowledge, Data Dvd's may work well on your mac but they do NOT play back on most set top dvd players.
It is possible to encrypt data to a dvd BUT it is Not possible to encrypt an entire iDvd (at least not in terms of preventing duplication /playback on a standard Dvd Player/recorder) in the same manner as a commercially pressed DVD function which are copy protected (CSS) when mass replicated.
They are two entirely separate forms of encryption.

  • Error message when burning discs

I can't burn a disc from my playlists. I have the newest version of iTunes but I do not have the burn icon at the top of the page. The only way I can initialize a burn is to right-click the playlist and select "burn playlist to disc". The burn begins properly but somewhere before it is finished it cancels itself and gives me the following message : Unable to burn disc. An unknown error occurred (4251). Any suggestions?

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, I GOT THE ERROR 4251, WHAT ID DID WAS TO SELECT A SLOWER BURNING SPEED, I SELECTED 4X, AND IT WORKED FINE, THE CD'S I AM USING ARE MEMEOREX CD-RW 12X, TRY IT AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS.
