Burn Disk - Can I Share iMovie with iDvd only

After completing an iMovie, can you send it direct to iDvd, then burn it on a disk OR do you have to share in media browser to burn a disk using iDvd? I thought I only needed to share with iDvd and then I would be able to burn the disk. When trying to do so, there is a file but it says it was not rendered correctly and nothing happens when attempting to burn a disk.

Hi
• Share/Export to iDVD - Usually don't work for me and when working delivers a poor result
• Share to Media Browser and then from within iDVD and media collecting it works OK
BUT if DVD is Your aim and You want good result - then iMovie'08, 09 or 11 are not tools of choise.
• iMovie up to HD6 - and -
• FinalCut any version

  • Will not share Imovie with Idvd. Gets so far and then a box saying Unable  to prepare project for publishing because an error occured (-41)

Cannot SHARE project from IMovie to Idvd. Gets so far and then a box with a message saying Unable to prepare project for publishing because an error occured (-41).

Bengt is as always entirely correct, but another meaning of error -41 is that you have chosen the wrong encoding setting for the length of video you have:
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1502?viewlocale=en_US
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Hi all, my first time on.  I shared my imovie project to Media Browser.  Fine.  Then after it downloaded it 'disappeared.'  Where did it go?  Having found it, how do I then share it with idvd?  I am told the image quality will be much better this route.

    Hi
    I do
    • In iMovie - select a project
    • Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res.)
    • Close iMovie
    • Open iDVD and select to start a New iDVD Project
    • Import movie - from Media button - down to the right - and here from Movies

  • Sharing iMovie with iDVD

I have just made an iMovie that is about 90 minutes in length. I tried to share it with iDVD and it says the movie is too long. I can burn it to a dual layer DVD so room on the DVD is not a problem. Is it possible to share a movie with iDVD and have it run longer than 60 minutes (as opposed to iDVD encoding it down to 60 minutes? Or do I have to split it into two movies? thanks in advance.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You just need to change iDVD Preferences to Best Quality from the default Best Performance. Will encode for SL.

  • Can't open imovie or idvd

I've created an imovie file that I put into idvd. Right now I can't open imovie or idvd. I can't even back up these files on a dvd.
When I try to open imovie, I get:
Projet couldn't be opened because disk is full, folder is locked or the folder permission are incorrect. If project is on CD-ROM, net server, or locked disk, copy to hard drive before opening.
If project is on hard drive, then the disk may be completely full or you may have to modify that folder. Correct problem and try again.
My work is saved on an external hard drive (le cie). I can't open the files on it. I get the same message. There is plenty of space on this external hard drive left.
What can I do? I can't even back up my work on a dvd. How do I fix this problem. Please help.
    Thank you.

My guess is that you didn't "format" the new external drive before you moved your iMovie Projects onto it.
Most drives come pre-formatted for Windows OS's and you failed to format it to work with your Mac.
Disk Utility app can do the formatting but it will erase the contents currently found on the drive.

  • Sharing iMovies with iDVD

On the older versions I was able to easily and quickly share my iMovie with iDVD - this version takes hours! Is there an easier way to send to iDVD?
Why is the rendering process so slow?
    - James Canty: [email protected]

the newer version is therefore less user-friendly and more time consuming than the older version... who planned that?
Apple had found that many iLife users were not using iMovie, some would argue that iMovie 06 became "too good". Others will say that many of the features of iMovie 06 made it hard for beginners to learn, so iMovie 08 is usually easier for the absolute beginner.
    I use both iMovie 06 and iMovie 08 (iMovie 06 about 90%, iMovie 08 about 10%).
Many reviews of iMovie 08 recommend using both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.
I do find that iMovie 08 is "feature reduced" and not as DVD friendly compared to iMovie 06. iMovie 06 is "timeline based", iMovie 08 is "clip based". The lack of a true timeline in IM08 is hard to get used to for some.
iMovie 08 is NOT an upgrade of iMovie 06. It is a completely new application. iMovie 08 is better for absolute beginners that don't want to burn a DVD. Most others will like iMovie 06 for its far greater editing power and ease of making DVDs. (Like creating Chapter Markers and Share to iDVD.)
When iLife 08 is installed, all of the old applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I find iMovie 06 to be easier and faster to use than iMovie 08 on longer jobs (more than 10 mins). iMovie 08 is faster for shorter jobs.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
The Web site below has a good comparison of iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.

How can i share documents with different users on the same mac?

Shared how? The other users can read the documents or you all can read and write the documents?
The first is easy just place the documents in /Users/Shared anyone can access the files there and the other users will be able to read them.
The second is a bit trickier.

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods discussed here: iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer.  If you no longer have the old computer and you have to transfer it from your phone, you will have to purchase and use third-party software to extract the music from your phone, such as Touch Copy  or CopyTrans.

I have over 3000 tunes on my itunes account, can I share these with my husband - he has never set up an itunes account.
    Thanks for your help.

The second link in ingo's response is key.  If you husband syncs his device on the same computer, whether under the same apple I'd or not, you can share music( each pick their own based on what they want to carry around) and pictures, and apps.
Updating apps can get tricky, as they will only update to the original apple id that bought them.  But music is fine.
You may need to authorize the new computer if he will be using a seperate apple id.  And make sure you don't just sync everything, or one device or the other will get wiped.  If you want to sync only music, they'll that to I tunes in the tab setting for that device.
