    (I need an answer fast.)
I also need a 8-9 GB gb DVD-RW (rewritable) in a small pack (Like 5 of them or something). Could I find this at walmart?

Would it be possible to buy and external dvd drive that would have the capability to burn dual layer?
    Yes.
I know they have cd/dvd drives for the macbook air. But I'm wondering if I could buy it, hook it up, and it work with idvd.
That model of drive will only work on a MacBook Air. You need a third-party model; iDVD 6 and newer can burn to external drives.

  • Do you need Dual layer discs if you are going to burn dual layer?

Do you need Dual layer discs if you are going to burn dual layer?
My project is 1 hour & :22 mintues. Do they make Verbatim discs that can handle that? OR do I have to put it on two disks?
    THanks

Hi, only just come onto this site to check a few problems I am having. Noticed that you are having trouble at stores of getting certain discs.
I order on the net +Taiyo Yuden+, who manufacture for other firms including Verbatim,An order for 100 cake tin, means they are very realistic in value. These discs look super and have not had a single fault. Dave

  • Trouble burning Dual-Layer discs using various programs... suggestions?

Hello, I could really use some constructive, helpful recommendations here. I've been trying to burn some large (5+ GB) disc images (ISOs, but mostly VIDEO_TS files) to a Dual-Layer disc that would play on a regular DVD player.
So far I've tried a couple different DL disc brands (HP, Memorex), and various programs (Finder, Liquid CD, even Toast Titanium 10 seems to have a hard time doing so), but without much luck-- mostly just end up with coasters.
Have you had this problem trying to burn Dual-Layer discs? And what's a good freeware/shareware program or method that's done the job that you can recommend? I have at least 75GB of space on my 250GB drive (so I would imagine that's enough for any temp burn folder purposes...)
    Thanks!

I use Verbatim usually and never have any problems so try one of those if possible, but before you do run a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it as just a small spec of dust or dirt can sometimes play havoc.
I burn most things with Toast or the Mac OS itself.

  • Problems burning dual layer discs using 10.3.9

    Hi please can someone help!!
I am pretty knowledgeable about macs but having problems.
My mac came with a pioneer 103 superdrive and have had no problems burning CDs and DVDs with Toast 6 Titanium. Recently i wanted to back up my dvds i have bought as some you can't easily buy anymore.
So i bought an external usb pioneer 108 and some 2.4x Dual layer DVD+R Rivision discs.
When ever i burn it gets right to the end of finishing and comes up with various errors and says it may have a lead-in lead-out connectivity problem. I have installed a patchburn which recognised both dvd drives and i installed before trying to burn. I have read somewhere that OSX 10.2.9 + can burn Dual layer and i have 10.3.9.
I have tried best and 2x with no joy. I am also using the setting DVD-ROM (UDF). After the disc mounts it plays through DVD player but is really jolting and is spit out by my normal DVD player connected to my TV.
I have got the DVD info off the disc using MactheRipper and just placing the two folders Video T_S and the other on the disc. I am keeping the Name as it was orginally. I have successfully copied a DVD that was less than 4.7gb which worked on both of my dvd players with my Pioneer 103 drive that can only burn normal DVDs.
I have not tried burning any other disc formats on the Pioneer 108 but felt it was a software problem rather than a hardware.
I have looked on Pioneer.co.uk and they have Firmware's i can download for the Pioneer 108 but not sure what firmware is or does? or whether they are PC or Mac versions.
thanks for your time, hope i have given all information required, would appreciate anyones help.

You need Tiger if you want to burn DL Media using the Finder, otherwise you'll need to invest in Roxio's Toast.

  • Can powermac g5 burn dual layer?

    Hi guys,
can powermac g5 burn dual layer dvds? I think mine is superdrive. It was on the top of the range when I bought it, before the intel chips came out.
    thanks for the help
    Jack

Post the information that's contained in the "Disc Burning" section of System Profiler. That will tell us what drive you have. In any event, if Apple supports DL burning with that drive, you should see "+R DL" or something like that in the list of supported formats.
I can't tell which G5 you have from your signature, so this is the best I can do for now. It's certainly not a dual-core PowerMac, as those couldn't run 10.3.9, as you have listed in your signature.

  • Please help! why is the DVD burner not burning dual layer media in my G5?

I have tried, unsuccessully, to burn dual layer DVD's on my G5 using the latest iDVD software (iLife '08) but to no avail. I switch to dual layer in iDVD but invaribly, I always get a multiplexing error at the end of the burn. Any suggestions?

Are there any plans to update OS 10.4.11 to include a firmware update for the DVD drive? Or has it already been changed in Leopard?
Depending on what model of Superdrive you have, there may be a firmware update from the manufacturer, just not from Apple. Updating to the latest firmware from the manufacturer often provides for better media compatibility, faster burn speeds, and sometimes even features that were disabled by Apple's version of the firmware.
DVD-R DL discs have one major drawback if you're using them to burn video DVDs - you have no control over where the layer break is placed. The first layer must always be filled completely before any data is written to the second layer. DVD+R DL does not have this limitation. You can place the layer break anywhere you like, just as long as the first layer is more full than the second.

  • Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer 8.5GB Printable Discs - Anyone?

Just wondered if anyone had used Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer 8.5GB Printable Discs or even just DVD+R Dual Layer Discs in their superdrive and whether they had been compatible ok? Im thinking of buying some but want to ensure compatability before i buy because theyre very expensive!
    Cheers

i am burning as we speak, a verbatim dual layer dvd and have had no problem.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the question. You are probably using Verbatim DVD plus sign R DL, whereas Graham is asking about DVD minus sign R DL. Please qavvik, check out that little detail on the discs you are burning and let us know.
Graham's question is actually extremely timely for current iMac users. Anybody know for sure if these new -R DL discs are compatible with the current SuperDrives, such as the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K04L? Did Graham get a bad batch?

  • Troubles When Trying to Burn Dual Layer DVD's

I'm not having any success when trying to burn to DL DVD's.
I've tried two brands, same results.
I have a mid-2009 macbook pro, which supports DL burning accourding to system settings:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware revision: KB19
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Every time I attempt to burn (I've tried both Disk Utility when trying to burn an ISO, and the application "BURN" when trying to just burn data files)
I see it "writing" for a few seconds and then it says "finishing"
Then after it does that for a while I get the error:
"Unable to burn ... (The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry.)
I can burn single layer dvd's just fine, wasted one just now to make sure my drive didn't go crazy.

Besides the brands, the writter can sometime makes the differnce.  Memorex, Verbatim and many other name brands are actually made by the same OEM company in Taiwn, CMC I believe.
Check also the layer break point.  If set incorrectly, your discs will end up to be coaster anyway.  Check this article see if it helps.

  • Unable to burn Dual Layer DVD's with Toast

    Hi all,
I'm having issues trying to burn dual layer dvd's with either Toast 10.0.8 or 11.0.1. I keep getting the Interface -50 error and sense key 0x02 error saying media is incompatible.
I have tried dvd's by DataWrite and Elite M and they both show error. It's strange though as I have been using previously purchased Elite M dual layer dvd's of the same spec as these newly purchased ones, and they worked fine!
My dvd drive is a standard OPTIARC AD-7170 that came with the Mac Pro as spec'd.
I am able to burn single layer fine, and dual layers are read. I'm just unable to write dual layer at the moment.
Any ideas? I'm stuck on what to do and what manufacturer's dual layer dvd's will work with this drive. It can just do +R DL.
Could it be I've been unlucky to have had 4 bad batches? I brought 2 x 2 (25 disc) tubs of DataWrite and same by 50 disc tubs Elite M.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Ash
P.s. I have tried creating a new admin user account to see if I am able to burn under that. I get the same errors.
P.p.s. "Hopefully" this is just a media issue and I can find some that works again. If not and it is a drive fault what can I do? What writers spec'd same are available internal for my Mac Pro?

If think you may be using the wrong speed-range media for that drive's capabilities. As I mentioned, there are two ranges, and 8X media cannot be written in a 2.4x (sometimes referred to as 4x) drive.
When you get an error message that actually tells you something concrete, you should listen to it:
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
... is pretty unambiguous. It's a problem with the Media.
Off-Brand media is the next weak link in the chain. One of their many problems is that they vary wildly from batch to batch. Verbatim media are thought to be the "gold standard". Get a small number of Verbatim Media and see if you can make ONE master on the best in the market. If you can, the problem is in the Media. If you can NOT, the problem is in the process.
Like I mentioned I have never had issue with Elite M before, and I always set Toast to burn "Best" under the recorder settings.

  • Optical drive won't burn dual layer dvd

Yes, mine is capable of burning Dual layer dvds. It was the $1299 Core 2 Duo version 1 rev. ago. Got it in October. In the System Profiler it says DVD-Write: +R DL.
So, I stick a +R DL disk in there, and every time I go to write to it, the disc gets spit out and it says please insert a blank dvd. Now, you might think I'm inserting full DVD+r DL disks, however, that's impossible, because this is my only dvd writer I own and there is no way every disk in my pack came out of the box full of data.
Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work, does just my optical drive suck, or do all optical drives in macbooks suck and it's just a silly joke? I've seen quite a few threads claiming their dual layer writers don't work.

    Noah Apodaca1 wrote:
I'm also having difficulties burning DL discs. I'm using Toast Titanium 7.1.2 and I just got done with 30+ minutes of burn time only to receive an error stating "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code = 0x02; NO SEEK COMPLETE"
I've been trying to use Windata DVD+R DL discs and I've got a nice collection of coasters so far. Is this something I should use my AppleCare to try to address, or is this a media issue?
I have experienced the EXACT same problem using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (not my fave), so I do not believe this has anything to do with the brand of discs.

  • Troubleshooting Inability to Burn Dual-Layer DVDs

I have a Sony DRU-820A DVD burner, and which has stopped burning dual-layer DVDs—single-layer DVDs continue to burn successfully. I've tried using both the Finder and Toast 8 (which have both worked previously), but now the burn fails while the drive is filling the cache. I've attached the drive to another computer, and it works fine. I've also tried creating a new account on the computer and burning from it, but that fails, too. The only change I made to my system between when the drive was functioning and now was the installation of the driver for my printer. Unfortunately, I don't know what was installed in order to remove it an determine if that's the issue. However, the same drivers are also installed on the second computer I used to successfully test the DVD burner. I'd appreciate any advice regarding the best way to troubleshoot and resolve this issue. Thanks.

So are you saying that after you stopped being able to burn dual layer in the one computer, moving the drive to another computer enabled you to burn to the same dual layer discs?
Dual layer media can age pretty quickly if isn't one of the brands known to be high quality according to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/
Or if it isn't properly stored in jewelcases, or comes on spindles, or is written on, or labelled.

  • Can I burn dual-layer DVD's ?

I'm buying a CD/DVD-DL drive upgrade for my PowerMac. What's the least expensive way to burn dual-layer (8.5 GB) DVD's in Tiger? Is other software needed or is there a utility included in Tiger? Thanks.

When you insert a blank CD or DVD the Finder will pop up a dialog asking what you want to do - select the option to mount the image on the Desktop. You may then drag items to the disc image. When you are done select the disc image then select Burn Items from the Finder's File menu.
All of this as well as using Disk Utility can be found in Help. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu or Disk Utility Help from Disk Utility's Help menu.

  • What is the best software to burn dual layer DVDs?

I was reading posts on a video forum and a number of the posts indicated that they had difficulty with burning software other than imgburn. However it does not run on a mac. I have used Toast for my burning. But I suspect I'll have to upgrade from Toast 7 to a newer version to burn dual layer. Another virtually universal comment was to only use Verbatum media. Should I look at another program?

Allthough Apple has dropped support of iDVD it still works with all system versions up to Mt Lion.  So if you still have it it's the best option available.  There is just no other video DVD authoring applicaiton for the Mac that is as versitile, easy to use and producing such professional looking disks.
If you don't have iDVD on your Mac you can get it by purchasing an iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com.
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
