Burn DVD from Digital Video (DV)

I have a one hour project on Imovie. When trying to burn it on IDVD I stopped the process after 15 hours. I thought it was caught up in some kind of loop. Someone said to convert it to a DV -Digital video file. I did that. It took 36 hours to convert! It looks great but the DV file is 23 Gigs!
I would welcome any suggestions on how to get this project onto a disc.
Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi pooper,
(Guten Tag is perfect!... but Karen is female, Karsten the male form...)
I think, we have it, ....almost....
first things first:
codec - your video is lots of frames, 30 frames per second/fps with thousands of pixels.... that is a lot of data! 1 hour of tape contains ~13Gigabyte of data.... that data have a special "store form factor", we like to say compressor, or codec, tape and iM use "dv" (=codec, miniDV=cassette type).... a videoDVD fitting 1 hour video just needs for the same movie just 2.2GB data - how's that? because it uses another compressor, mpeg2... very efficient, but just for playback...
BUT!
you said, your dv file is 23GB... <calculating> your project is LONGER then, letssay 115 minutes?
iDVD just accepts files of up to 120minute length, it doesn't care for size.... (I wrote 115min, because iDVD needs some "room" for menu, music, buttons, backgrounds etc...)
latest guess:
your project is too long!
(hopefully it is that easy...)
concerning disk space:
for letting your Mac work properly, the free space on your internal drive counts... the ext. drive is just for "storage", not for the files, your Mac writes/reads "secretly"... and: your Mac will not complain runnig out of space, it will just die... oops, no!, it will freeze. first getting slower, then freeze.....-
sorry for speaking so ... childish, but a) complex process b) me no english c) I don't know what you know....
tell us the length in min:sec of your project...-
(HA! this post gets a yellow star, I'm soooo sure... lalalala.... :•) )

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

How do I select photos, projects to burn for a dvd?

Frank's answer tells you hao to export your slideshow movie on a data DVD. But if you want to burn a video DVD that you can play in a DVD player you will need additional software, see Karsten Schlüter's User Tip:

  • Creating a PAL DVD  from NTSC Video camcorder

Can the latest version of iMovie create a PAL DVD from NTSC Video camcorder? What are best practices and workflow to create a PAL DVD from NTSC sources.

iMovie doesn't create DVDs, iDVD does..
in iM's prefs, set Video to 30fps = NTSC
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
in iDVD's prefs, set Video to 25fps = PAL
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
when finished with editing in iM, Share to Mediabrowser
in iDVD, select a theme, grab movies from Mediabrowser
burned DVD will be PAL ..

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker

    Hi,
My M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker and other applications.
I have also had problems burning CDs (unbranded) from Windows XP, built in utility.
Does the multidrive have problems, with cheaper brand disks?
    Just to note,
The laptop has been back to the support guys three times so far with various issues.
    (1) The hard drive failed.
    (2) The multidrive failed.
    (3) The motherboard got replaced, because of power failures, it wouldnt charge the battery or recognise that the power adapter was plugged in.
Note: The harddisk, not the exhaust fan makes the most noise in mine!
    Thanks

    Hi
As far as I know the preinstalled burning software (i.e. record now, drag ndrop) disabled the Windows XP burning option. In this case if you want to use the Movie Maker or Windows media player burning option, you should to enable this possibility.
Please go to driver properties (right click). Please select the Recording tab. The option Enable CD recording on this drive should be marked.
I use the Nero burning software and in my opinion its a one of the best burning programs. Furthermore you should try different CD/DVD manufacturers because some CDs and DVDs are not compatible with some drives. Check the TDK CDs and DVDs. I never had any problems with these medias.
    Best regards

If you want to burn BluRay DVDs you will need Roxio Toast.

  • Burn DVD from video

Somewhat a rookie so go easy on me. I produce a 30 minute TV show in Final Cut Express. I print to video for my media that I give the TV station. I'm often asked to present one of my episodes to a club, etc. A DVD is most convenient for this. I've never had luck printing a good DVD from FCE...I'm sure it's my technique. So, I got the smart idea of using my edited and finished video that I would send to the TV station and use iDVD OneStep (iLife 09) to produce a DVD. Everything seemed to go fine until I put my new DVD in a DVD player...no sound. The image quality is very good and very happy with that...but no sound. What have I done wrong or is iDVD simply not made for this purpose?

    Hi
There is a lot to this. Some basic.
DVD - is a standard in it self - CAN only do SD-Video (as old CRT-TVs at it's best)
Neither iDVD, Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro - can do anything better.
(Roxio Toast 10 (11) Pro incl BD-component - Can burn to Blu-Ray and even small movies
as this on Standard DVDs - BUT they NEED a Blu-Ray Player to be viewed)
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - BEST
    • Best Performances *(movies + menus less than 60 min.)* - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2.Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov *(not selfcontaining, no conversion)*
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x4 (x1) (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a shortlived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
*Blu-Ray / BD* can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to plyback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be playbacked IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera recorde in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver
    • Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Can't burn dvd from my imovie

I made an imovie from my vacation. Then on my one to one lessons, they told me to share-media browser. I did that. It took hours. Then I put the movie in the themes and was told to just burn it. I told them twice that when it starts to burn, it stops when it comes to the slideshow button and it says there is an error. I did insert photos in my movie. I am wondering if I'm supposed to do something to my movie before I share it. The last helper told me that it would burn and the slideshow thing wouldn't happen. But it did. Help!

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
I used all of them and they all work
    • Burn - is very simple but if the Movie is the most important part it can do the job
    • Roxio Toast™ - fairly OK and can do other trixs
    • iDVD - the best program in competiotion to iMovie HD6 that Apple ever made. Just a few bug's and if they'd been corrected - Excellent. But they never be so.
    • DVD-Studio Pro - Yes and it takes a PRO time to learn too - still if learned the top of the cake.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • Burn DVD from Youtube

How can I burn a DVD from Youtube?

You can watch Youtube videos on your TV many ways. Many newer Smart TV's have a Youtube channel, if yours does not have that ability you can also get an AppleTV ($75 refurbished from Apple's online store) and view Youtube and much much more including your own video library, photo library, etc and other channels. If that is of any interest to you, click http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD199LL/A/refurbished-apple-tv for information.

Music :If I burn a DVD from an iPhoto Slideshow, will the music in the slideshow be on the DVD ?
Text Slide :I want to add one or two slides which just have some text on - probably - a black background, how can I do this ?

I like iPhoto for slideshows, and what I do is Share/Export the slideshow to full-quality, large Quicktime video, including the selected audio. This video file can be dropped into or imported into iDVD.
You can create a graphics file in Photoshop or other software and save it as a jpeg or similar format. This can be imported into iPhoto without any difficulty.

  • FCE: Possible to Capture SD footage from digital video cam?

Ok, probably a daft question this. Don't laugh...
I'm thinking of purchasing a digital video camera that uses SD cards. I currently use a MiniDV cam and connect via Firewire.
Is it possible to capture footage shot on SD cards into FCE?
And, if so, should I use USB from the camera, or insert the SD card into my card-reader?
The camera I'm looking at is able to record HD footage to a 2gb SD card (about 40 mins worth)
    Thanks for your time!

  • Burning DVD from disc image

I've been burning DVD's from disc images using Encore 1.0 for some time now. ever since I upgraded to 2.0, Encore gives me error messages on my project like:
    "first play not set" and
    "remote control problem".
I don't see how these messages can appear when I'm using a disc image (i.e. a completed project) as the source. does anyone know?

When you click on the Build DVD button in the Disc panel, Encore does a quick check of errors
in the current project. If you have a new, empty project, you will at least get errors about First Play and Title Remote. Those errors have nothing to do with your disc image, they apply to the current project, from which you are trying to burn your disc image.
These errors may be safely ignored, since they don't have any effect on your disc image.
