Burn DVD off digital cable box?

I tried searching this topic a number of ways so I apologize if this is repetitious, the ones I found just didn't seem to be relevant.
I was just wondering if I could burn a dvd on my mac from a digital cable box?
The box is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 (Time Warner) and I just noticed it has a USB connection on the front. If I played the recorded program in real time could the mac just burn as it's shown, or does it need to be a file that is download and burned? I would have no idea how to do this.
It's a local public access program so I don't think it would be pirating the show illegally.
Thanks!

I don't know how you could stream the signal from the cable box directly to the DVD. Take a look at products from Elgato, as they would enable what you want to do, and that may give you an idea what your options are. http://www.elgato.com

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.

  • My Mac Mini is placed on top of a DVR Digital Cable Box, smart idea?

I just got a DVR Digital Cable Box from Comcast for my LCD TV and i ran out of room on my Desktop, so i placed my Mac Mini on top of the Cable Box, the HD that's built into the DVR is not underneath the Mac Mini so that's good, and the cable box still has a LOT of open holes for ventilation so there's no heat under the Mac Mini.
Also...the HD that's in the DVR is producing vibration which i can feel on my mac Mini when i touch it.
So is my Mini safe or should i buy a little Mini stand, if so then wich one would you reccomend?
    Thanks in advance!

Hello! Most modern electronic devices are shielded to prevent interference and usually the only thing that causes problems are large crt monitors. Go ahead and enjoy! Tom

  • Connecting U-verse digital cable box to new iMac

I was wondering if there was a simple solution to hooking up my digital cable box from U-verse to my new iMac so I could watch TV on it when it is not being used as a computer. Note that I do not care about recording TV onto my hard drive etc., just want the output of the cable box to show up on the iMac screen so I can get rid of the TV in the office? I see the Elgato EyeTV but that seems like overkill, is there a cable plus software solution I can get?

There used to be a lot of posts looking for remote codes that worked for the s-10 remote. The new s-20 is supposed to be more friendly to sound systems. You might call in & ask for one.

  • How do I return a Digital Cable Box to Verizon?

I was wondering how do I return a digital cable box or exchange it for another box with Verizon? With my old cable company I would just go to one of there local businesses.

If you live in PA, there are no stores (and probably other locations).  You can have Verizon ship a new box (for exchange), and then take the old box to a UPS store where Verizon has a contract for returns.  Be sure to record serial number(s) and get a receipt from the shipper in case of billing problems later.

  • Burning DVDs off of iMovie ver. 2

Hey all. I have a Mac G4 with os 9.1. I am trying to burn video dvds off of iMovie v.2.0.3.  Have created the project,  but can't get my Lacie firewire DVD burner to find and burn the project.
I exported the project to Quicktime, and can view it there, but I have been unable to get my Lacie drive to recognize the project and burn the DVD.  I can burn data DVDs, but not videos. I also cannot find a format through which I can put the project on media and open on my Windows computer to burn the discs.
Is there any way to get my project onto a DVD? Answers?

    Hello, see if Burn.app helps...

  • Burn DVD from Digital Video (DV)

I have a one hour project on Imovie. When trying to burn it on IDVD I stopped the process after 15 hours. I thought it was caught up in some kind of loop. Someone said to convert it to a DV -Digital video file. I did that. It took 36 hours to convert! It looks great but the DV file is 23 Gigs!
I would welcome any suggestions on how to get this project onto a disc.
    Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi pooper,
(Guten Tag is perfect!... but Karen is female, Karsten the male form...)
I think, we have it, ....almost....
    first things first:
codec - your video is lots of frames, 30 frames per second/fps with thousands of pixels.... that is a lot of data! 1 hour of tape contains ~13Gigabyte of data.... that data have a special "store form factor", we like to say compressor, or codec, tape and iM use "dv" (=codec, miniDV=cassette type).... a videoDVD fitting 1 hour video just needs for the same movie just 2.2GB data - how's that? because it uses another compressor, mpeg2... very efficient, but just for playback...
    BUT!
you said, your dv file is 23GB... <calculating> your project is LONGER then, letssay 115 minutes?
iDVD just accepts files of up to 120minute length, it doesn't care for size.... (I wrote 115min, because iDVD needs some "room" for menu, music, buttons, backgrounds etc...)
    latest guess:
    your project is too long!
    (hopefully it is that easy...)
    concerning disk space:
for letting your Mac work properly, the free space on your internal drive counts... the ext. drive is just for "storage", not for the files, your Mac writes/reads "secretly"... and: your Mac will not complain runnig out of space, it will just die... oops, no!, it will freeze. first getting slower, then freeze.....-
sorry for speaking so ... childish, but a) complex process b) me no english c) I don't know what you know....
tell us the length in min:sec of your project...-
(HA! this post gets a yellow star, I'm soooo sure... lalalala.... :•) )

  • G3 to cable box- can it be done???

Have an ibook G3 10x7 screen, dual USB.
I would like to stream Netflix onto my analog tv. I have a digital cable box with a USB and 3 RCA inputs. I tried an A-to-A USB cable- no luck
Is there a magic device out there that can do the job??
    Many thanks for your help.

Mini-VGA to S-Video adapters exist which will hook up the RCA input from yellow to yellow on the TV.
The headphone port can be connected to a red/white RCA port with a part from Radio Shack for audio.
Netflix rented DVDs would have to be played back from your iBook. You can't use the video on demand on Netflix's website on an iBook G3. Modern Intel Macs are the only ones with enough processing power to do that.

Can I use my 27"iMac late 2009 as an external display for a non apple product such as a cable box?

To get TV on your iMac off the cable box you would need to use an external TV tuner device such as the company ElGato is highly regarded for.  I have used one of their EyeTV products for many years with my iMac to watch television shows from my Comcasst cable TV box.  You can look at the models here:

  • Connect Cable Box Output to MacPro USB Input

Is it possible (using appropriate cable) to connect the HDMI output of a cable box to a USB 2.0 input on a Mc Pro in order to view cable TV programs?

    BDAqua has it right.
HDMI has nothing compatible with USB. USB is far too slow, and the signal levels and data encoding are completely different.
If you could get past all that, they still would have nothing to say to each other.
And Macs generally have no HDMI inputs, only outputs.
To view Cable TV programs off your cable box, you need a TV set.

  • Can the Mac record digital cable TV?

My digital cable box (Scientific Atlanta - Explorer 3250HD) has two Firewire ports on the back. When I connect it to my Mac mini with a Firewire cable, the cable box shows up in the System Profiler. Is it possible to use the Mac mini to record TV shows digitally using the Firewire cable?

    Will this help you?
*The Soundtrack Pro installer does not install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is required for MPEG-2 file playback and the Compressor Preview function. If you need the ability to import and playback MPEG-2 content, you can purchase the downloadable QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is available from the Apple Store.
I launched my QTPro and found this information in the Help Menu... more infor here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

  • EyeTV DVR with comcast digital cable and appletv

I use an eyeTV Hybrid to record video from Comcast's analog cable signal onto my iMac 5,1 which then syncs with an Apple TV to view the recorded content. The entire system functions as a distributed DVR if you will.
I have been using the setup for a couple years now and everything works great. The problem is that Comcast, in an effort to free up bandwidth, will be switching the vast majority of their analog content to digital. In order for me to continue using the eyeTV, I will now have to resort to a Comcast digital box which comes with its own remote effectively rendering the eyeTV scheduler useless. Comcast tech support is clueless about my setup and doesn't have any solutions so I was wondering if anyone out there is successfully using a digital cable box to receive signal to a tv adapter like eyeTV and is able to schedule recordings.
    Thanks in advance.

No, but I did find a solution, although a cumbersome one. I had to get a ZephIR widget to act as a computer controlled remote for Comcast's digital converter. The ZephIR then had to be programmed for the converter's code and EyeTV had to be configured to work with the set top box via the ZephIR remote configuration. The Comcast device and ZephIR need to see eye-to-eye in order for this to work. I haven't set this up permanently yet but have verified that it works. No changes on the AppleTV. It's oblivious to these changes since all it cares about is content from the EyeTV.
