BURN DVD Using Disk Utility not Bootable

I have downloaded TechTool Deluxe for Intel and PPC. Following instructions in Disk Utility, I made/Burned DVD's of each .dmg for Power PC & Intel based computers.
Neither DVD will boot on computers using OS 10.5.6. The PPC DVD has OS 10.4.4 and the Intel has OS 10.4.5. I have tried restart using System Preferences, the "C" key, and "Option".
Can someone tell me how to boot from the DVD's or tell me what I may have done incorrectly?

There must be some misunderstanding here.
It is the TechTool CD that must boot. If an operating system was installed on the CD via Disk Utility Burn then it should start up on that CD. It does not, even though it will show up in System Preferences/Startup Disk and "Options". I see it as a matter of how Apple installs the .dmg onto the CD as a legitimate startup disk.
All my computers work fine with 10.5.6 or lesser for older machines. The purpose of Techtools for me is to assure that they continue to do so.
The reason for a second G5 is that the first one had an LED light "on" on the logic board making it somewhat inoperable. The second machine comes clean. 10.5.X was installed nicely.

Use mkisofs to create the disc image, and burn it with hdiutil or drutil. (Some of the free options mentioned above actually use mkisofs.)

wanted to share a way that i successfully installed os 9, tiger, and leopard on 1 hard drive. first of all, leopard was the only installation that i had difficulty with. it would not boot off the original dvd, no matter if i held down the 'c' key or the option key, so this is what i did after a lot of reading on the internet to try and troubleshoot this issue.
First thing i did was partition my internal hard drive in 3 partitions using disk utility. the 3rd partition was around 9gb. I installed os9 first on the 1st partition, i then installed tiger on that same partition. then i put in my leopard dvd, and opened up disk utility. and clicked on "restore", and dragged the dvd image as the "source", and chose the 9gb partition as the destination, and clicked on restore. then, i changed the "startup disk" to start from the 9gb where i just restored the image, and rebooted, and went through the leopard setup and chose the 2nd partition as the place to install. this should work with the dvd, or if you made an image from the dvd. I hope this helps someone else whose dvd won't boot, because it was very frustrating after you purchase a faster processor, and faster video card so that your system meets the requirements, and then the dvd won't boot.

Two ways. Use another computer to restore the install disc to one of those ext HD. Then, use it to boot the other machine. Get an ext CD/DVD reader and use it to read the install disc and boot the machine. However, if both the HD and optical reader are kaput, then a trip to an Apple repair station is in order.

No, Toast automatically handles the copying process—it creates a temporary image, burns it, and then deletes it.

Error in Copying a non-commercial DVD using Disk Utility

I have a non-commercial DVD. I am using Disk Utility to make an image and reproduce the DVD. It consistently runs through the cycle and at the very end I get a dialog box:
STOP "Input/Output Error"
Any ideas? I really would like to make back up copies of this video event.

Can't erase (rewriteable) DVD using Disk Utility

I'm trying to erase a Maxell DVD +RW in my Mac Pro's SuperDrive, but when I click on Erase in Disk Utility (I've tried both Quickly and Completely, and both the drive and the disc itself) it just spins for 30 seconds, and then stops (with all the data still there).
I also downloaded PermanentEraser and dropped the disc icon into the app icon, but it also spun for a while but did nothing. I tried selecting all the files on the disc and manually dragging them to the Trash, but when I try to empty it I receive an error code of -61.
What's going on? Does DiskWarrior somehow create startup disks which can't be erased?

Hey, if you do that ... you can throw disk directly to the trash. if you used fast
erase option, you can only use disk utility !!! trying to that with others software make disk unusable.
when I started to use rewritable disks I did this mistake over more of 10 disks, before I understanded it. Toast warn you, when you use fast erase.

PPC G5 OS X 10.5.8 using disk utility not all permissions repaired

Dear apple Community,
My G5 PPC iMac OS X 10.5.8, Processor 2GHz, memory 2 GB DDR SDRAM, Total Capacity:149.1 GB (160,041,885,696 Bytes)
Applying Disk Utility to Repair Permissions there are always 12 permissions never repaired! Should I delete then reinstall the Operating system? OR
Is there something else that could be the problem?

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.

Help burning DVD with Disk Utility

I have a Mac Mini with a SuperDrive.
System Profiler confirms that I can write a DVD-R:
But Disk Utility won't let me burn a DVD. With a brand spanking new blank DVD-R in the drive, it says "Write Ability: Read Only":

Eject the disk.
In disk Utility, select the disk image file and click the burn button.
A drop down window should appear and ask for a blank disk. Insert the disk.
Soon the window should change and show burn options, and the burn button at the bottom right should turn blue. Choose any options you need and click the blue burn button.

When I click the 'burn' button only the internal CD-writer appears allthough an external DVD-burner is connected via USB 2.0.

Disk Utility not copying all files when making disk image

My OS is 10.6.5 and everything is up to date.
I have a dvd that was burned for me of a play my child was in. It was probably burned on a PC using out of date software for all I know. But it plays in a DVD player and also in DVD player on my Macbook.
I want to be able to share clips of it online with friends, and that has all been just fine importing from the disk image I created of the DVD using Disk Utility, using IMovie 09 to edit it.
HOWEVER when I got to the end of act one, chapter 7 in the DVD is only about 3 minutes in length. The disk image I created using Disk Utility does NOT include any chapter 7 (which happens to be the ending of Act 1) and so I cannot import it into I Movie in order to add it to my mp4.
When I explore the DVD itself with my macbook, it only lists twelve files (various BUP's and IFO's and VOB's etc) -- here they are sorted by file name

Now, when my husband took the disc and created a .dvdmedia file in it and I explore that, there are 14 files. All of the same 12 files plus two more. (The DVD itself has 13 chapters but the main menu doesn't allow you to select them.)
the other two files in the .dvdmedia package are

VTS010.VOB
But I can't do anything with that .dvdmedia file except watch it.
So I'm trying to figure out how to at least grab even just that last 3 minutes from Act 1 either from the original disc or from the dvdmedia file, using Imovie. So far having no luck. Disk Utility leaves it out and it's my only bridge from a burned DVD to Imovie. I've tried creating a DVD master and also an ISO using DVDRipper and that does the same thing. Also if I open the original burned DVD with Finder it only shows me the 12 files not the 14 that show up when using DVD Ripper to create a dvdmedia file.

I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

The difference between a .dmg file & a .cdr file (using Disk Utility) ?

In particular, I created both from a DVD using Disk Utility.
When I chose "read only" a .dmg was created.
When I chose "DVD/CD Master" a .cdr was created.
They are exactly the same size.
Is there any difference ?

Cloning Time Machine using Disk Utility

I understand this is possible, and I have been largely following instructions on pondini.org (great resoruce for a lot of Time Machine related issues) at this link:

What I want to do is transfer my current set of Time Machine backups (let's say Drive1) to a different drive (Drive2) and reuse the original drive as a new Time Machine from scratch.
So what I have been doing is this:
Repartition the destination drive, Drive2, so it is GUID and then checking OFF "ignore ownership" under the get info window.
Opening Disk Utility and selecting Drive1, and clicking the RESTORE tab.
Dragging the VOLUME for Drive1 into the source box.
Dragging the VOLUME for Drive2 into the destination box.
Go.
Everything actually seems fine (well, teh destination drive is slightly less occupied, but maybe that has to do wit .fsevents stores, and indexing) - I'm able to browse other Time Machine files and report to the new Drive2 to see in the Time Machine interface.
HOWEVER, my issue is this:
The permissions appears to be all wrong for the new clone on Drive2.
On Drive1, the proper Time Machine drive, using 'get info' on files on the drive, the listed users and permissions are correct, for example, the listed users are system (read & write), staff (read only) etc, and in terminal, permissions are under root, wheel, etc as I assume they need to be.
However, on the new Time Machine clone, Drive2, the permissions on all files all list my username (read & write) and staff(read & write). In addition, properties of the volume differ from the source, including things like whether ownership is enabled, or if permissions are repairable (get info in Disk utility pane - yes I understand that in Disk Utility, it used to say 'no' on drives when it sometimes meant yes, but this seems to be rectified in Mavericks).
In other words, it looks like the cloned volume belongs to my user.
Now is this all normal? If I were to associate the new Time Machine clone, Drive2 as my TM drive, would it fix this? Would restores from this Drive2, where all the permissions for my user are enabled would restore incorrectly to a new machine? It probably means I can restore individual user files, but would the system be broken?
Otherwise, did I not do the procedure correctly? Was I supposed to NOT check off 'ignore ownership' on the destination drive? (I'm assuming it doesn't matter as teh clone would inheret properties from teh source). Was I NOT supposed to clone VOLUMES, but use DISKs instead?
Or was I supposed to use Disk Utility not as my user, but from the Recovery HD or something?
I'm running 10.9, but a similar procedure I did under 10.8 has the same outcome.
Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Once your Time Machine data is migrated, you can just erase the old drive and start from scratch.
Unfortunately, the owner of pondini.org has passed away and there is no one to support any instructions you will find on that site.
