Burn Failed

I burned 9 disks for iPhoto backup. On the 10th disk I received this message:
" Burn Failed
The burn to the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H drive failed.
The disc drive didn’t respond properly and can’t recover or retry."
I tried the 4 times, shut down, opened and tried again with same result.
I want to try this forum before calling support.
Does anyone know if this is a user-fixable problem? Anything I can do to fix? Nine disk burns are not very many successes. I have copied the data on the type of CD/DVD drive I have as follows:
OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H:
Firmware Revision: 3AHB
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
Additionally, I inserted a disc and chose View>Refresh, and all I got was a pop-up that told me I had inserted a blank disc and to select what I wanted the computer to do. There was no information on available burn speeds.

Same problem, brand new iMac 27", made one CD of photos/videos from iPhoto '11 and next try gave me:
"BURN FAILED
The burn to the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H drive failed. The disc drive didn’t respond properly and can’t recover or retry."
On retrying a couple of times, I could burn photos but not the video clip, but ultimately could not burn anything via iPhoto and also got the error message:
"BURN FAILED
The burn to the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H drive failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error."
Phone support said it indicates bad file content, not a hardware problem. Indeed I was able to burn with no problem by copying into a desktop burn folder, including the video and photos that had seemed to cause a problem. It is a hassle to do so but I went on to burn close to 20 full CD's (up to 699.5MB)nonstop over the next several hours without a problem, so heat was not a problem. Downloaded some more photos off the camera and tried burning via iPhoto again, but got same error message, yet no problem burning same photos off my G5 or iBook with iPhoto '09, so the problem seems to be the burn function in iPhoto '11. Ideas? I'd prefer to burn directly via iPhoto '11.

I got an error message while burning a CD in iTunes - "the attempt to burn a disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error."  What does this mean and how do I fix it?

The disk you are using probably has a defect, not uncommon on consumer grade disks. Try another disk or better yet another disk from a different manufacturer or at least a different batch.

  • The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.

When trying to burn a CD, I'm getting an error that reads:The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.  I experienced this message before and took my Macbook in to the store and the the genius was stumped but when he tried one of his CD's it burned fine to he concluded that the problem was in the CD's NOT the Macbook or program  HOWEVER, months later, I'm having the same issue using the NEW CD's.  Does anyone have any information about this?

    3 methods to fix this:
The first is to reset pram
at boot up hold four keys down till you hear 3 chimes:
    command(apple)=option+p+r
release keys and it will now reboot.
The second is to reset nvram
at boot up hold four keys down:
    command(apple)+option+o+f
    a black screen will appear
    now type: reset-nvram
    click enter
    now type: reset-all
    click enter
    it will now reboot
The third is to open system preferences.
    go to international
under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to english
make sure "word break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart.
I hope this helps you as it certainly did me. :^)

On an older Mac I got this message while trying to burn a CD for the car: "The attempt to burn a disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error."  What does this mean?  And how do I work around it?

I had been getting this all morning and checked other messages from the community. THe one which worked was trying a different brand of disc.
I had been using Verbatim which had copied the music fine off the Real Player on my PC at school, but wouldn't work with I Tunes. Tried a Staples and an Office Depot CD-R , both of which did the job.

  • DVD burn fails on symlink

I'm trying to burn a DVD backup of a directory that contains some symbolic links to other directories, and the burn fails every time. If I drag the directory to the blank DVD, then try to remove the symbolic links from the burn folder, they actually get removed from the "real" folder! Does anyone know a way around this? At the very least, I need some way to gracefully get around having a symbolic link -- some way that doesn't involve creating a coaster, which so far is all I've been able to do.
EDIT: So, it looks like it wasn't the symlinks at all, but something more generally related to backing up the ~/Library folder, per this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7e70f. I have to say. I tried fixing permissions, but no luck, I just made my sixth coaster of the night trying to backup my own files. This is frankly ridiculous: Not only does the folder inexplicably avoid being burned, but it crashes the entire burn process, not at the point of preparation, but mid-burn.
Second, burning for me is slow, just 2X. I've seen a couple of recent threads on this issue, but they're with Rev B iMacs as I understand. I'm using a Rev. A, with the Pioneer DVR-KO4F. Is there any way to improve the speed?
    Thanks very much-
    -Alan

    Hi
It sounds as if it may be lack of free disk space, or lack of contiguous free disk space. How much do you have left on your main drive? Perhaps deleting some unwanted files would help.
If your drive is highly fragmented the DVD image may be scattered all over the disk, causing a buffer underrun, especially if you're running the burning software off the same drive. You can buy software to defragment it, although OS X defragments small files on the fly so it's not normally needed. Perhaps burning at a slower speed would give the drive time to keep the buffer full. Freeing up some disk space should also help though, so there's more contiguous free space available

  • DVD Burn Failed-Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

Please help: I can not burn any DVDs. I am trying to burn some pictures from iPhoto to DVD for storage. I choose the pictures & then hit the burn icon at the bottom of iPhoto. It will run for about an hour but then stops. I keep getting "Burn Failed: the burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 drive failed. Unknown error." I've tried several TDK DVD-R 2x discs & the original Apple DVD-R that shipped with my computer. I am able to burn CDs with no problem but this is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD. Can you also tell me if I will be able to use TDK DVD-R 8x since I can't hardly find 2x or 4x anymore. Thanks to anyone for any help. I have lots of pictures & I've got to get them off of my computer. Thank you very much.
    Apple PowerBook Titanium G4 15"
    purchased 12-2-02 from MacConnection.com
    1GHz/1GB/60GB/SuperDrive/56K
    Mac OS 10.2.8 (6R73)
    Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

I'm having the same exact problem with my Powerbook I think, it's a 1GHz with the same Matshita DVD drive. It'll burn the disc apparently, but it never finishes. it just idles in "Closing Session 1" (i'm using a burn folder in Tiger now)...
but the problem also occurs in iDVD. and when i burn disc images.
i've found that when i see it idling (at the end of a burning cycle), i can usually eject the disc and have a working disc, but with no guarantee.
I want Apple to fix this!

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

I tried my first Windows CD burn with iTunes; the burn fails at different points during the burn, with error codes 4450 or 4280.

I have the same problem, after years of everything working great. Last time this happened I tried using a different brand of CD and it worked, but I must warn you that now iTunes rejects all three brands I have been trying to use.

  • Burn failed: there was an error producing data for the burn

Getting the following message after trying to bounce a project to CD:
Burn Fail: There was an error producing data for the burn.
Using Logic Pro 9. Burn has worked with all projects up til now. Not sure what is different about this one. Still works with old projects. ANy ideas? Thanks.

Thanks very much for responding John, Minimum was to the CD. I have an Internal Superdrive. it does dvd and cd-rs. At this time, since my original post, I have burned four smallish rolls like 200 photos at 200+ MB's with success. And then I can try less say 100 photos @ 110MB and I get the error, and coaster that is unreadable. I have a partition area on another internal hard drive that I may try to transfer to so I can get these off my computer and maybe reinstall iPhoto. I will try to pop them into a folder and copy with Toast , which i use at times for other projects. I just like the idea of keeping all the rolls in order and not losing any of the data that is part of the originals. Any other ideas would be appreciated. The photos are sort of important.

  • When burning my pictures to CD, a burn failed, medium write error came up.

When burning my pictures from IPhoto to a CD, a burn failed, medium write error showed up,

Like many other suggestions I found, I went ahead and purchased a lens cleaner. The CD instructions said to insert and play track 2, but my drive would just keep ejecting the CD. But it worked! That and a little compressed air.
Before using the lens cleaner and compressed air, my drive would constantly give me a medium write error and always make loud vibrating noises that sounded like my drive was about to explode. But now it writes like a charm and is completely silent!

I am using memorex CD-R's and have tried with 4 times with different CD's. Is this a software or hardware problem? Any info would be awesome

Export the photos to a desktop folder, right click on the folder and burn to disk - see if that is any different
