Burn Folder and Burning CDs

I know that if I insert a CD I can copy files from my HD and paste them into the CD and then burn the CD.
But, I also want to take advantage of burn folders. If I make a burn folder and drag files from the HD into the burn folder I only get the aliases (I've heard this is what you do- simply drag and drop). What I want to know is if I go ahead and burn the folder will it burn the aliases or a copy of the original file. OR, do I have to do the same as with a CD i.e. make a copy and paste it into the burn folder. Thanks.

Furthermore, if you get info on the burn folder it only will give the size of the aliases. Does anyone know how to find the actually size of all the contained files?

  • Problems with New Burn Folder and burning discs

Hello, I find that my mini doesn't wish to burn discs. If I Create New Burn Folder and dump stuff into it, it won't accept the blank discs I insert as true blanks; I get a "insert blank disc" command. These are just standard cd-r and dvd-r discs. Nor is the Burn command available through the menus. And beyond that, once I have the disc in, the eject commands are disabled! I can't get the disc out.
The only way I've been able to burn is to insert the blanks first, then drag stuff onto the disc; the Burn Folders just don't work and then I can't even eject the dratted things. Can anyone comment or help---
    Thanks,

  • Burn Folder and Burning a CD/DVD

I put 50 Photos (Tiff & Jpg's) into the Burn Folder. Followed instructions to Burn these on to a disc. It said it could only Burn the first one. Any advice welcomed.

Well, since it's a general OS X question, the best place would probably be in the Using OS X Tiger forum, but since you have an intel imac (Thanks, Niel!) there's also a forum for Using DVDs and CDs with your Intel iMac.
Either forum gets a lot more traffic than the appleworks forum, which is for apple's old productivity suite that has been replaced by iWork.

  • Compressing Time Machine backup folder and burning to DVD

Can I compress the backup folder and burn to a DVD disc?
Most people seem to assume that an external hard drive won't fail and so keeping all files backed up to it is a good thing. Surprise - external HDDs fail also.
I'd really like to have compressed back ups on a DVD in order to have 3 locations with my files.

It would have to be a pretty small backup to fit on a DVD. You won't likely find too much benefit from compressing the data because much of it is in binary form that is most likely not going to reduce much if at all.
A single DL DVD can hold 8 GBs. If you have just OS X installed that will require 16 GBs less whatever you may save compressing the data. Personally, I would not risk compressing the data since that could prove just as problematic or more so than keeping it on a hard drive. Furthermore, if you want more than 5 years storage life out of the DVDs, then you have to avoid the stuff they sell at places like Office Depot which have a relatively short shelf life.
If you need to use more than one DVD, then you need a backup utility designed to span a backup across multiple media. Your choices are somewhat limited: Retrospect, Apple's Backup (requires a .Mac account to download and use,) and possible Tri-Backup (but I am not sure about it.)
Or you can buy several hard drives of suitable size, make multiple backup copies to each drive, store one in a vault off-site. Rotate your weekly and monthly backups to the other drives and once every quarter rotate the off-site drive. The chance of all the drives failing at once is pretty small.

  • Can iDVD create disc images from VIDEO_TS folder, and burn them?

That first question is pretty self-explanatory.
Background is this: I've downloaded some video folders/files from forum/torrent trading websites. When finished, I have a VIDEO_TS folder, often an EXTRAS_TS folder as well. A while back, I downloaded the app DVD IMAGER to create a disc image. Yesterday that stopped working effectively, so maybe I need to re-download, but I was wondering if there's just a better way? I also downloaded the app called BURN, but can't see yet how that creates disc images.
Once I create that disc image, I need to burn it, and I was using Disk Utility for that. I'm really looking for some help and advice on the best way to perform these processes.
Thank you, and let me know if I need to post in another forum.

Additionally, do you have experience w/ DVD Imager?
Nope. Like I said, Roxio's Toast Titanium is the top application (and is probably the one that most experienced people use).

  • Can't burn DVDs and the CDs are getting spotty ...

I have been reading some threads about the DVD burning troubles and it all seems over my head.
What's happening is that the DVD burn process goes absolutely fine until the very end when it claims that it has lost contact with the devide blah blah blah. The same error code that apparently evenyone else gets. (I can't find the peice of paper i wrote it down on, and i'm not gonna destry another DVD-R trying it out jus to get the code!!)
I downloaded the BURN freeware program and it got the same thing as well. I tried rebooting but htis has been going on a long time, through many restarts. ALSO now when I burn CDs I am getting the same code maybe 1/2 the time.
I would try "going into admin mode and creating another user" blah blah but I don't know how to do this. I would try to re-install the driver for this DVD player but I have not idea how to do that, either. I feel very out of my league now.
I do have apple care, but they'll want my computer and I have to insure that all my data is safe before it goes and I can't back up without the DVD drive and I don't have an external harddrive.
help? please? maybe some more idiot friendly instructions for some of the things that I can try: I've already verified and repaired the permissions.

You can probably buy an external Firewire DVD burner that supports Mac OS X booting from http://www.macsales.com/ for less than it costs to repair your existing one out of warranty. Also backing up is very easy with Superduper and an external hard drive. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If you are the only user on your system, you are likely already an admin user. If you aren't, ask the person who manages the machine to make you one via Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts, selecting the user and changing the preferences on it.

  • Burn folder vs. make duplicate of  update pkgs.

    hello...
i need something explained please and have only gotten more confused by reading the posts on topic. ..
i did an erase and install sunday and used software update to install and keep packages. i kept packages as i am on dialup and it takes 7 hrs. for some downloads. i know it can be done and i know that others do this...my desire is to burn those packages to cd in the event of crash before i get this cloned to external or i could also use them on my emac which has not been 10.4.3 ed yet.
my question is this; i located those packages, put them in burn folder and burned. i then questioned the purpose of burning an alias in this case. that would do no good, right? i then just made duplicate of each and dragged to newly created folder and burned.
was there a difference in those two actions and will the latter do the job i intended as the former would not?
    thanks much,
    ballerina

    Hi ballerina,
When you place items in the burn folder they are indeed aliases but when you burn the CD it burns copies of the original file, not the aliases that you put in the folder. Either way you did the burn the end result was the same; copies of the original files were put on the CD's
Seems a little confusing with the aliases but it is supposed to speed up burning by the system not having to make duplicates of eaach file before burning it like it did before the burn folder feature was added.

  • How do I put JPEGs in a burn folder without having them be aliases? I see the JPEGs in "Preview" but can't fugre out how to duplicate the originals so I can burn them without them being aliases.

How do I copy JPEGs that I see in "Preview" without getting aliases? I want to burn a new disk with copied originals, not aliases?

You can create a new folder and drag the originals into it and burn that as well, the "burn folder" concept just makes it easier to not to have to put everything away later.
Just delete the burn folder and your done.

  • Burn Folder on DVD

This is sort of a generic iphoto question and since i have this version i decided to post here...I have an imac and also a power mac. I downloaded all my photos to the imac and created a burn folder, and loaded all my pics into that folder, burned a DVD, and imported them all onto my iphoto on my power mac. I can view these photos on iphoto, but can not do anything else...i.e. email, drag to desktop...UNLESS I have the burn folder DVD running. Is there any way to change this so that i can do whatever I want with these photos, without having to have the DVD in?

Check your preferences on the Power mac (in iPhoto '08 - iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> advanced ) and be sure that "copy items to iPhoto Library is checked" is checked. It sounds like it is not and that iPhoto did what you requested - referenced your photos rather than copying them
if that is the case you will need to delete the referenced photos so you do not have both the copied and the referenced photos in your library

  • TA24563 Where is the burn folder

Hello. I found a tutorial on the web saying how to burn a dvd from Aperture. It said to export to the burn folder on the desktop. I don't see any burn folder on the desktop. I'm using OSX 10.6.8.
    Thank you.

In the Finder go to File->New Burn Folder
create the Burn Folder and name it what you like. Then when you export from Aperture select this folder as the destination.  Once done exporting go back to Finder and burn the folder to disk.

  • Strange burn folder behaviour; lost files, sort of...

I was trying to back up several folders from iTunes onto a DVD. I did this earlier today, and it worked fine. When I tried it again, by highlighting 5 folders and dragging them to a second burn folder, the following happened:
    1. The folders did not appear in the burn folder (but they DID disappear from the original folder containing them, which should NOT happen!).
    2. When I double click on the burn folder in the finder, the burn folder and all 5 of the subfolders that are supposed to be in the burn folder open simultaneously in 6 different windows in the finder.
    3. Using a terminal window, the 5 folders are missing from the iTunes directory.
    4. When I run iTunes (or use SpotLight), the folders are shown in the normal place, and everything seems OK. But, if I look for the files using "find" in a terminal window, I don't see them.
    5. These folders are not easily replaceable--I'm reluctant to shutdown my machine--I'm not sure whether the files will still be accessible to iTunes after a reboot!
Any advice on what to do would be appreciated!
    Thanks,

#1- Burn folders are created if you insert a blank CD/DVD except when responding to a pre-initiated burn request (like pressing the burn button in iTunes)
#2- They may be "anchors" (don't know what else to call them) for streaming media files. If you clicked on a streaming video link, it is likely that those files-usually about 4KB were downloaded at that time, normally they are removed once the stream is played. If they're not, delete them yourself.
FYI-.ram is extension for RealPlayer files. .asf.asx is Advanced Streaming Format

  • Burn folder with external DVDWriter

    how to do SUBJ?
trying to write with Burn Folder and IT says no disc in drive...
but i wanna burn my folders to external writer...
    where i can choose primary CD/DVDblablabla... ??

    Hi Jean-Luc,
i'm not in front of my mac,
but there should be a finder action that will find all files modified within a certain time period (it should be a finder action), then you can tell automator to burn the selected files to a cd (also a finder action).
automator is visual, so you sholdn't have any problems.
PS: i know there is a script to select a particular folder (from memory), but i'm not to sure about the validation period script.
    regards,
    Pete.

  • Burn Folder Problem

I am trying to make a Backup of my User Folder and using the Burn folder and a 4 Gig DVD. I have about 1.5 Gigs in my User Folder. Right after the burn process started I get a message that says--Burning the disc failed because one or more items the "Home B-U 3-18-07 could not be read.
    "/Users/csmith/.bash_history" cannot be read.
    Chuck

The error indicates that the hidden .bash_history file, located at the root-level of your user folder can't be read. You can view it with this Terminal command:
    cat .bash_history
or simply delete it with this command. The Terminal program will create a new one:
    rm ~/".bash_history"
and try burning the folder again.

  • TRASH AND BURN!

I've got more than 20,000 pix in IPhoto 6 and with everything else am down to my last 10 per cent of disk space. Yikes...
So, I've been brutal for once. And the great hoarder that I am has dumped 6,000 pix into trash thinking I could burn them before removing totally.
Alas, I can't find a way of doing this, other than to reimport them into the main library. In which case, I'd be back to square one after weeks of pruning. This would mean that the pix which are currently ready for the axe being littered all over the place again throughout my library - they don't even seem to come up as 'last import' when returned.
I should, of course, have put them all into a new folder called, say, Burn, done the deed and and then trashed them, but pix in trash won't go to other folders - just back to the main library.
I've also tried moving trash pix into a burn folder and that hasn't worked either.
Any other ideas before I simply self-destruct my 6,000 - by trashing the trash!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think you've gotten yourself between a rock and a hard spot. I know of now way to get those photos grouped together in the main library directly from the Trash bin. You can't even assign a keyword to them there.
You can, however, drag them from the Trash bin to a folder on the Desktop and then burn them just as jpgs. That would work. But a warning: be sure you drop them into the folder and not miss it and put them all in the Desktop. That can bring the computer to it's knees. Best to open the folder and make it a large target for dragging and dropping.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
