Burn Highest Quality DVD from iMovie '11 where source is from DV tapes?

Hello everyone -- I'm hoping to find an answer that isn't too wildly technical and doesn't discuss the HD aspect of things.
I recently used the Share --> iDVD method and the results were pretty bad. It looked unsaturated, bland, pale, and blah. But any clips with increased contrast or saturation (changed within the editing process) looked jaggy and pixelly. In one clip, I lowered the exposure and brightness of rippling waves in water so they were very dark. It looked great within iMovie, looked like pixellated psychedelic nausea-inducing goofiness after I exported it, and truly appalling on the DVD.
The source video isn't brilliant, but when I make a Quicktime movie of it (using Share --> Export Using Quicktime, i think default settings) it looks OK. (except for those waves.)
I'm using an iMac running 10.8.1, Snow Leopard, and iMovie '11. iDVD is 7.1.2
I also have Roxio Toast 10 Titanium.
Also, I used whatever the default settings are to capture the source video from a now-old Canon DV camera. Was that a mistake -- are there special settings I should dig up?

Technically, it is a different process.
When you use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE or SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER, iMovie creates you finished movie in H.264. When you use SHARE to IDVD, iMovie creates an intermediate movie for use only in iDVD that is in DV codec (or AIC codec if the original footage was HD).
Intuitively, it would seem that staying in DV would give better results, but my experience has been the opposite.

I just tried using Share, and I can see one of my processors working at 100%, but I've got no indication of any progress - or even that it is working, except I can see a few files in the directory I told it to create them in.
I told it to create a DVD (there was a checkbox), so I put a DVD in the drive.
I have no idea how long I should wait until giving up? I'd generally avoided trying to send anything to Compressor from motion, as it would take 10x longer.

For the quickest method at the highest quality I would export a self-contained movie from Motion and take the self-contained QT movie and bring it into Compressor. Because SD DVD is compressed to MPEG-2 video format you will want to have control over how the file is compressed at the target bitrate of compression in order to achieve the best quality. You would want to duplicate and edit one of the DVD settings in Compressor then set the video bitrate to about 7.5/mbps because anything over that bitrate may cause playback errors on certain DVD players. I may receive compensation from my link. Make sure the audio is set to 192/kbps AC3 in Compressor.
You can setup distributed processing with Qmaster to enable multiple processor cores in a cluster and take advantage of multi core processing in Compressor. Additional info if necessary (more on the web by searching).
Then after Compressor is finished compressing the self-contained QT file take the compressed MPEG-2 file and .AC3 audio file and import them into a DVD Studio Pro project and follow these instructions to make the movie autoplay without any menus. I'll throw up some screenshots on the linked page soon to provide a visual reference of how to use DVD Studio Pro to create a DVD that autoplays without a menu.

How do I create the highest quality dvd of an iphoto slideshow?

I have created a large (550 photos) slideshow in iphoto using one of the iphoto templates and added music to the slideshow. The photos are high quality/large file size photos. I would like to then combine the iphoto slideshow with an imovie trailer. When I have gone through through the process of exporting the slideshow out of iphoto and into imovie and then burning a disk with idvd, the quality of the dvd is poor. I am using the latest versions of iphoto, imovie, and idvd. I would appreciate any advice on how to produce the highest quality dvd from the slideshow as it is part of a gift recapping a trip.

Here's one approach: First crop the photos to the iDVD size ratio, 4:3. Export the movie out of iPhoto via the Export button and select Size = Medium or Large. Remember DVD video format is standard definition only. All media gets reduced to 640 x 480 before burning to disk.
Don't add it to iMovie as that just adds another layer of compresson/encoding to it.
In iMovie create the trailer and use the Share ➙ Media Browser option. This produces a better file image than the Share ➙ iDVD option.
In iDVD create a Slideshow and add the trailer from the Media/Movies pane and drag the iPhoto movie after it.
Set transitions to None and slide duration to anything but Manual. Do not add any audio.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If you find that the resulting movie/slideshow extends off the TV screen and looses some of the image you can set the iDVD/Slideshow preferences to Scale Photos to TV Safe Area.
That may add black areas to each side of the movie depending on the size ratio of the TV screen and aspect ratio set in the DVD player.
NOTE: if you have access to a copy of iMovie 6 HD I suggest you use it for your slideshow from photos and the trailer. It produces the best results with iDVD and allows far better audio control. If you do have that version just drag the completed iMovie project file into iDVD to avoid another layer of encoding/compression.

I have successfully exported a 5.5GB (66min) HD 720p MOV file from iMovie. I then used iDVD to import this MOV file and burn it to DVD. When I played the DVD the quality was nowhere near that of the imported HD 720p MOV file as played on QuickTime. The DVD also shows captions at the edge of the 16:9 TV screen instead of further inside as per the QuickTime screening of the HD 720p MOV file.

• There are no HD-DVD in real life - DVD is as standard SD-Video
• If You must use iMovie'11 then do not use "Share to iDVD" BUT "Share to Media Browser" and as Large (Not HD or other resolution - as result will suffers)

• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no QT-conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't

iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need

_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored

The BD-encoded DVDs can be playbacked IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.

• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

• No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver
• Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)

• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set

Creating the highest quality dvd

I'm making a feature length film for Sundance. It's all shot in 1080i and the sound is in dolby digital. I'm new at all of this. What is the best quality set up for the best quality dvd non-hd? The movie is 1hr 50min. There are no special effects. I have to send it off Aug. 1st. Also, what is the best way to burn it after compression? Should I buy Popcorn or just use iDVD? Thanks for any help.

Compressor with DVDstudio works best,
however, in Compressor settings tab choose:
Apple>DVD>DVD Best quality 150 minutes.
This should give you a pretty good result but ...hey, it always depend on the source!

Highest Quality DVD Encoding for 29.97 and 24p DVX Footage

I want to make sure that in both FCP and in Compressor that I am setup to have the best possible quality SD DVD.
I have edited footage that is both in 29.97 and 24p from a DVX100a in Final Cut Pro 6.04. My sequence settings are:
720x480 -NTSC DV 3:2
Pixel Aspect: NTSC
Field Dominance: Lower (Even)
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Quality: 100
Video processing and render settings are on the highest setting.
I am done editing and want to encode to SD DVD using Compressor. My settings are:
Video Format TAB - Untouched (NTSC, 29.97, 4x3, Field - Bottom First)
Frame Controls TAB -
Resize - Best
Output - Progressive
Deinterlace - Best
Adaptive Details - Not Checked
Anti Alias - 0
Details Level - 0
Rate Conversion - Fast
Set Duration 100%
Are these settings correct? When I brought the mpeg2 into DVD Studio Pro and put it into a track, it said that it was 720x480i. Shouldn't it be 720x480p? I am a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated.

Look, you really need to wrap your head around 24p, 30p, 24pA and 30i.
Interlace is not an ugly issue. It is a benefit. Interlacing normal on broadcast television. Your TV scans down and back up for each frame... alternating lines. When you shoot 24p on the DVX it puts it to tape where for every 3 frames of progressive it combines FOUR frames to give you TWO additional combined (interlaced) frames. So.. there are 6 sets of 5 frames per 1 second giving you 30 frames per second. If you take those 3 progressive frames by themselves 3x6 is 24 frames per second.
You OBVIOUSLY want to final out to 29.97 or 30 fps so you'll need those extra 2x6 frames to get you to 30!! If you wanted to final out to 29.97 AND you wanted progressive frames for EVERY frame you should have shot 30p mode.
Now... when are they ugly? When you are standing still on a frame. When are they unnecessary? When you plan to show them on a computer or progressive monitor. Remember, even when shooting progressive and playing it on a TV you will STILL have the TV doing interlaced scans... the only difference is the down scan is taken from the same point in time as the up scan.
Plus... you don't capture TO a sequence... you capture the video and edit it IN a sequence. You can still capture the footage in 24p at 29.97 and remove those 2x6 extra frames and edit in a 23.98 sequence.

First, make a project. Then share your project to the Media Browser.
If you prefer to make a DVD of your raw import, go to the iDVD Media Browser and navigate to the Event file.

Can I get a higher quality viewing experience on a dvd if I convert my 47 minute movie using compressor or will it be the same as a quick time conversion?
Also, what is the best dvd to use - R, + R or other.

ABSOLUTELY better in compressor. And really it's a snap to use.
Export quicktime movie, self contained, do NOT recompress all frames.
Open compressor, drag file into thew window, select best 90 minute encode, push button. Two files will be created. Take them into dvdsp and author.
If you find it could be better, there are some things you can do to fix it up. Try playing with the bitrate in compressor, you can increase it some to help with difficult spots. Add compression markers in the timeline on "busy" sections.
How typical that the one on one with a genius gave you less than stellar results.

Making the best quality DVD from FCP

Can anyone suggest how to make the highest quality DVD from an HDV FCP project?

Importing from iMovie HD is not bringing any of my edits!

According to the iMovie 09 help file:
"When you import video from iMovie HD projects:
- All clips from the clip viewer are added to a new Event.
- All clips from the timeline are added to a new project."
But when I import, ALL my work is lost. I get one long event that is the original source and NOTHING else. No new project s created, even though there is stuff in the timeline. (Stuff that took hours to create.) Is the help file lying? Did I really just loose hours of work?

The only solution I can think of is exporting each clip, one by one, to full quality QuickTime files, then importing those into iMovie 09. I'm doing that now (roughly 100 clips. Grrrr...)

Backup Project Converted from iMovie

Hi, new to FCE from iMovie, as you can tell from this post. I have an iMovie project that I converted to FCE and want to back it up to reclaim some hard drive space. I have a few questions on just what I need to keep and what I can toss.
1) AutoSave Vault. Do I need all of these, just the most recent, or any of them?
2) Render Files. Do I need to save all of these?
3) Audio Render Files. Ditto.
Also, just out of curiosity, after you import an iMovie project into FCE, do you still need to keep the iMovie project? Does it copy the DV files into FCE, or does it refer back to them in iMovie?

Best format for HD imovie export & 'archiving' source video for future

I’m sort of new to this but your help would be appreciated. I want to make sure I don’t mess up and delete any ‘precious’ moments.
I recently purchased a Canon HF100 Camcorder and have been recording various short movies and wanted to ‘plan’ for the future
1. I import the movies directly into imovie 08 without any issues (at the highest quality). I then drag the “MTS” files from my camcorder to a folder on my desktop (still compressed) and plan to save them for ‘future’ use (i.e., burn them to DVD or maybe move to an external hard drive) – I want to make sure I don’t lose any of the video ‘quality’
 Will I be able to easily ‘load’ these MTS files into imovie or other video software?
2. I currently do not have a HD DVD player or Blu Ray Player – but plan to get one in the near future. I want to make sure that when I export movies from imovie 08 I export the movie with the best HD quality.
 I’ve exported the movie using the best mac settings (.MOV) files, and they look ok on the computer, but the resolution was lower than the native resolution from the camcorder. I’ve also messed around with some of the various settings in the Quicktime, but none really looked that good with playback on the mac and there were a lot of different options I was not familiar with (maybe because I don’t have the Quicktimepro?) – anyway can anyone recommend some ‘univeral’ HD settings that I should use?
3. Once I save a movie to quicktime (or whatever the best recommended setting from #2 above), I’m assuming I can re-open or import it back into imovie and re-edit – correct?

You need to preserve the file structure to a certain extent. Inside the Canon directory is a folder named "private" Inside that is one named "AVCHD". that's the one that needs to be saved, preserving directory structure within. It's best to save it as a disk image. Once opened, that disk image is seen as the camera by FCE or iMovie 08. Here's a thread about this on MacRumours (I'm gpeden):

I'm new to this too, but I have that much figured out so far:) Of course, one needs an intel Mac for this.
I'm preserving the raw files for the future in the disk images (and burning the 8 gig card's disk images to dual layer DVD - data only, for the ones I really want to backup), which assures me that any future upgrades to hardware or codecs will be able to possibly improve over what's available today.
