Burn Tool:  Protect Tones checkbox has no effect

Deleting this question.  I was trying to darken an area of highlights that had too little color to protect, which is why the burned area was appearing grey.

>CS4 added "Protect Tones" to the Dodge and Burn tools with very little explanation about what it does, yet the default setting is Protect Tones on.
My Link was in answer to your question in that it tells you what "Protect Tones" DOES.
If you wish to turn it off, that is up to you but there is no Preference available to do that as far as I know be probably because the Photoshop engineers felt that using "Protect Tones" would benefit the User.

After installing this update I was surprised to hear an alert sound on each arrival of a new mail message. The notification is behind the sound and is controlled by System Preferences --> Notifications --> Thunderbird --> "Play sound for notifications". Tick that off and that's it.

  • Dodging/Burning - Protect Tones misbehaving

In PS CS3 I had set up something very useful on my Wacom tablet. I had two buttons mapped to two different actions. They would do the following:
    1) Load tool preset for Dodge, 25px soft round, 10%, Highlights
    2) Load tool preset for Burn, 25px soft round, 10%, Shadows
With PS CS4 this doesn't work because of the new "Protect Tones" checkbox. If Protect Tones is on, the tool preset will not change from "Highlights" to "Shadows" automatically. It just gets stuck on whatever it was on previously. To make matters worse, Protect Tones turns itself ON every time you switch from Dodge to Burn, even if you've saved a Tone Preset with Protect Tones turned off!
I hope an update for CS4 comes out soon to address little but frustrating bugs like this one.

It probably means that there's some glitch, and they haven't updated Actions properly to record the Protect Tones checkbox pretty disastrous if you need to use these tools as part of skin workflow, and you really need to assign keyboard shortcuts to them -
but something that should be easy to fix on an upgrade

  • Dodge/Burn Protect Tones - Preference for Off??

CS4 added "Protect Tones" to the Dodge and Burn tools with very little explanation about what it does, yet the default setting is Protect Tones on. I don't like the effect of Protect Tones.
Is there a way to change the default, short of creating a tool preset?
Tool preset defines the brush shape and other settings. I just want PS to launch with Protect Tones check box always off.
    Anyone?
    Thanks,

  • Is there a way to enable the "protect tones" box while working in Lab mode for dodging and burning?

Is there a way to enable the "protect tones" box while working in Lab  Color mode for dodging and burning?

Don't think so. Those algorithms are built around the RGB color model as far as I know and there is no way to achieve the same result in other color modes. It may not be programmaticalyl and matehmatically impossible, but it's probably too complicated for a quick solution due to constant color space conversion math getting involved.

  • Why can't i move pasted selection? the move tool has no effect.

Why can't i move the pasted selection.  it was cut from another photo and copied to this one.  It was dropped in the middle of the photo but the move tool has no effect on it.
    thankx

I discovered that I had to be on that layer, click on the recompose tool, then click on a corner to bring up the green check indicator, then click on the center and it would move. In the old program I just clicked onto the move tool and it would move.
    Thanks for responding.

  • Burn tool turning skin green

I'm trying to darken overexposed parts of a face, but the burn tool turns them a light greenish-gray color. I have CS5.5, and I have Protect Tones turned on. Is there a way to fix this, or is there some other method I should use to selectively fix overexposure? Thanks.

And yes, I have the RAW, but I don't want to post it.
If you have the raw file then I would suggest going back to the raw file and process out a new version of the image where you use a combo of a minus Exposure and plus Hightail Recovery to regain the blown highlights and simply copy/past them in. If your processed files have clipped tones in them inside of Photoshop there's little you can do to fix them. Best is to process the raw files optimized to tone and color and not try to "fix" them in Photoshop.

  • Burn Tool Color

With the burn tool one can use it several ways.  The direct way is to just click on the tool and select whether you want highlights, mid-tones, or shadows.  Each option changes the burn shade slightly.  Also there are a host of blend modes which again changes the burn shade.
One can also create a burn layer and change blend modes, all with different effects.  Then you can also use the brush tool and select color burn or color dodge, with the foreground color changing the shade of the burn.
So all of these options give a great deal of control, but frankly I am just burned out on the process.
All I want is to have the burn deepen the color to more closely match the color in the shadows of the picture.  It seems to work better on flesh and soft colors than on bright colors.  In those cases I give up and resort to a brush in normal mode with color selected by eyedropper.  But that can make the image more muddy as it covers up rather than intensify.
So wilh all the man-years of experience out there is there a more simple way to get the correct burn shade than going though 49 different variations?  Or should I just stick with the brush and use a different blend mode?

I never interpreted the Highlights / Midtones / Shadows setting to control "shade" so much as whether it affect the bright tones, medium tones, or dark tones more.  I guess I normally consider "shade" to have something to do  with changing color.  Perhaps "shade" in the context of your usage is what I'm describing.  But if it isn't, perhaps a misunderstanding of what the tool does is part of the issue.
By the way, I fully accept that my own definition of "shade" may be flawed.
I find the Burn tool to have a LOT of uses, and I usually tend to edit the pixels directly (rather than doing a bunch of layer combinations) but I don't think I understand your question well enough to offer particularly specific advice...
One thing I CAN say is that I always try to work very conservatively with the Burn and Dodge tools and gradually build up to I'm trying to accomplish, usually using soft brushes.
Can you post an example of a troublesome image?
By the way, another whole approach that I've used sometimes is to make a duplicate layer and hide it, then go back to the layer below and do global adjustments on it - e.g., Curves and Hue/Sat - so that the parts you're trying to "rescue" look good, then make the upper layer visible again and either mask or erase on it (again, using subtle strokes) to reveal the better looking stuff underneath.  You're still "painting on" the fix this way, but your destination is preset in this case.

  • Dodging and burning tool freeze up on CC 2104

I have recently subscribed to CC Photoshop 2104 and when using the burn tool the programme just hangs, or takes a very long time to complete the action. i have to close down lose my work and re-open. Dont know how to fix it, help?

I recognize that you want to use the Dodge and Burn tools for local tone adjustment, but it would be to your advantage to use another approach for dodge and burn. Consider this:
Dodge and burn, techniques that provide subtle local adjustments in the tone values of an image, are familiar to anyone who has worked in a film & paper darkroom. Photoshop’s similarly named tools have one notable shortcoming; each dodge or burn dab is incorporated into the image. This makes it impractical or impossible to undo one or more of the changes minutes later, when other dabs have been added elsewhere in the image. Instead, you must then pile correction on correction rather than modifying the original image values. It is an inefficient and often destructive procedure.
There is a better way – one that puts the dodge and burn adjustments on a separate layer where they may be seen at any time and each adjusted or even eliminated, returning the area to its original value – all without corrupting the original image. This is how to do it:
    1. Load a file to be retouched and add a blank layer by clicking on the Create a New Layer symbol at the bottom of the Layers panel to the left of the Trash. The blank layer is Layer 1.
    2. Choose Edit > Fill and from the double-arrow options of the Use field, choose 50% gray. Then click OK. The image area will become gray overall.
    3. Change the Blending mode in the Layers panel from Normal to Overlay. The Background image will return although you will be working on Layer 1.
    4. Do not use the Dodge and Burn tools. Choose the Brush tool and adjust its size by tapping either of the square brackets to the right of the P key on the keyboard. To adjust the Brush hardness – a soft edge is best for this -- hold down the Shift key as you continually strike the left the square bracket. Set the Opacity of the Brush in the Options bar at about 10%.
    5. Painting in white will Dodge (lighten) the area, Black will Burn (darken) the area. Strike the D key to place Black as the Foreground color and White as the Background color. To transpose them stroke the X key. Dab or stroke with the Black to slowly add density. To lighten an area, dab or stroke with White. Although the image will reflect the changes, they are being recorded on Layer1 and may be viewed by turning off the eye in the Background layer. Best of all: to undo any tone adjustment and return the area to its original value, simply return that area to 50% by cloning from an adjacent unretouched area in Layer 1.

  • Snmp configuration on weblogic 10 has no effect

    SNMP in MMC(Mobile Management Center, A HP Product), use joesnmp.jar internal to send snmp trap generated by mmc app. This part works well in weblogic 10;
snmp in weblogic , configured by weblogic console. In weblogic 8, we configure such items:
    Weblogic Subsystem
    Purpose
    Level
    Deployer
    Monitor all war/ear deploy/undeploy/redeploy
    INFO
    JDBC
Monitor all warnings/errors in jdbc operation
    WARN
Current tests shows that the snmp configuration on weblogic 10 has no effect.
Due to MMC4.6 gets the Weblogic updated from 8.16 to 10.3, we didn’t find the configuration about “Enable JDBC Logging”. Below is the former config page about Weblogic 8.16.
But in Weblogic 10.3 we cannot find this configuration. We have followed the guide http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/jdbc_admin/monitor.html#wp1048793
And tried to set the appropriate properties on the command line like this,
    -Dweblogic.debug.DebugJDBCSQL=true -Dweblogic.log.StdoutSeverity="Info"
Actually we can get the DM, Core, SMTP, Bulk, Adaptor Class, and connection fail error messages in weblogic backend log, but seems Weblogic cannot send SNMP trap messages to SNMP monitoring tool like Openview.
PS. Weblogic can send out the SNMP trap messages when the server starts and stops.
So till now the SNMP cannot monitor the DM, Core, SMTP, Bulk, Adaptor Class, and connection fail for MMC4.6.

Hi, I am on 12.1 weblogic, and I am stuck on where you set the SNMP Servername and port number.
We are on windows 2008, I see there is a services, SNMP .
Is there something I need to do on the weblogic side before i get into the SNMP agenets and traps, this part I understand, I am just unsure where to add the SNMP Servername and the user I wish the emails to go to.
I see in the security realms the user i can add to the group monitors.
-->, I am running WL 10.3 and SNMP works fine. The cluster generates traps based on particular mbeans, such as when a server's health state is not "OK", or when there are JDBC connection issues. You have to create a new SNMP agent within the admin server then build the individual traps ( String, Gauge, Counter, etc. ) and make sure you have a Trap Destination.

Whether this option is ticked or un-ticked, command+clicking a link will open the link in a new tab and immediately switch to it.
Is it possible to change this behavior so that command+clicking on a link will open the link in a new tab in the background?

  • Can I make a 1 pixel burn tool?

If I use a pencil, I can draw one pixel at a time. However, if I switch to the Dodge or Burn tools, even selecting 1 pixel width, it still is soft. One click effects 8 pixels. How can I truly harden the tool to only darken 1 pixel at a time?
    Thanks

Sure...just load up your hard square brushes from Photoshop's brush presets.
But there's still a problem, that is: Even with 1 pixel hard square brushes, there's been a bug in Photoshop for years that causes the effect to extend out past the single pixel to the right and downward. In other words, you want to affect just a single pixel, but it will actually affect a 2px × 2px region, where the pixel your cursor is over is the one in the upper left of that 2 × 2 box. You may have to make a marquee selection to constrain your dodging/burning operation.
This bug affects all the tools that use the brushes.

  • Device drained its buffer w/out burn underrun protection

I've been trying to burn one of my playlists from itunes, but after a minute or so, the message "The device drained it's buffer w/out burn underrun protection" appears, and the blank CD is ejected, with no tunes burned.
I've never had a problem burning playlists before, and I have no idea what this message means, nor how to correct the problem. Help! please.

    Cyd,
To even get started on resolving this issue, you and the others having the problem should all report (by posting here) the version of iTunes you are using and which built in external media drive your Mac has. I for example have an eMac with Combo drive and iTunes 4.7.1.
I just ran across your post and "looked in" - so I promptly composed a new playlist and burned it to Maxell CD-R, 700 MB disk. It worked flawlessly.
I've checked (as you probably have) every item on the iTunes Preference Panel and can't find anything about buffer size EXCEPT in "Advanced" under the streaming internet radio panel (or "window"). There is a buffer size selection of "small, medium, large."
I see no indication that there's a connection between that and the "other" buffer which is for under-run protection. (Using Toast Titanium, there's a very clear arrangement of menus, including one for setting {disk burning} buffer size.)
So I'm stumped too - except to suggest you try setting the streaming buffer to "large" just in case it's a "dual control" for the burning buffer also. Mine's set at Medium, by the way.
Can't resist mentioning - I think your screen name is fantastic, I'm old enough to remember the lovely dancer / actress, Cyd Charisse.
