Burned CDs appear as Blank

Hello, everyone,
Please excuse me if I repeat my question with someone else's (I did make a search though).
I've burned some CDs on my MacBook Pro 17'' about an year ago. I've played the same CDs without any problems. Long time past, I've made certain updates when the Sorftware Update indicated for such (if that's concerns this issue)...
And now, when I insert any of these previously burned CDs, they appear as Blank (any other CDs/DVDs play fine, except these ones).
I'd appreciate any help!!!
Kremena

The problem might be a dirty lens
I had the same problem. No burnt disk could be read (or burnt), but factory CD's could.
Cleaning the Superdrive (mac mini-intel 1st-gen) solved it for me. I used a cleaning cloth for glasses wrapped around a CD. A real CD-cleaner Disk or pressurized air might be a more recommended way of cleansing.
It might also be a too weak power supply, but that is not so likely with Macs.
Also take a look at this thread:

And read the "crazy solution" at post #9.

Problem was first noticed because I can't burn CDs in iTunes.
The problem is that all blank CDs show that they have no space on them available. If I look at the properties of a blank CD, they show 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free and 0 bytes available.
By removing the upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry, (accoring to the Microsoft prescribed method for this problem found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060) the problem is solved for my whole sytem except for iTunes. iTunes then tells me that "the registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. ... Please reinstall iTunes."
I reinstall or repair iTunes and then iTunes opens fine but I can't burn with iTunes or any other program since I am back to all blank CDs showing there is no space available.
The iTunes toubleshooting Fac found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976 has been tried also and does not change the problem of blank CDs having no space available.

  • CDs appear to burn properly but are no good

My MacBook Pro has the iTunes Music folder (iTunes 10.1.2) on a shared partition so all accounts have access to it. When any user attempts to burn a CD, everything appears to progress normally, with all the right prompts and progress indicators, but upon apparent completion the result is a coaster. The CD initially mounts on the desktop, and appears in iTunes, but an attempt to play it hangs iTunes. Attempts to play it on the iMac (or remount it on the MacBook Pro), or any CD player also fail (it is rejected by iTunes and ignored by CD players, clearly a bad disc). The problem isn't caused by the shared iTunes Music folder, as the iMac is set up the same way and has no problems burning CDs whatsoever. Also, the MacBook Pro has no problems burning discs with Toast or Disk Utility. Any ideas?

My main supply of blank CDRs is the remains of a 100 spindle of Sony discs (which of course burn at max speed in iTunes on the iMac). I tried one on the MacBook Pro at 2X without success, then another at 1X, which at least would remount on the MacBook Pro after being ejected, but still would not play. Both discs were rejected on the iMac. I had a few Imation 12X CDRs, so I tried one at 1X, which resulted in a disc that plays, but is noisy. When played on the iMac it also has a tendency to skip to the next track. It appears there may be a hardware problem with the drive in the MacBook Pro.

Try using a LensCleaner Disk first off. If that won't even run try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
Then use the Lens Cleaner again. Make sure your disks are immaculately clean.

  • Previously burned cds now read as "blank CDs"

long story short, i bought this computer SLIGHTLY used, it basically sat around at a friend's house before. i'm barely familiar with macs and may not know all the terms.
i had this computer for quite some time and eventually the hard drive died on me, just recently got it replaced. and they installed 10.4. when i got home i installed itunes latest version and checked for all software updates. i've been able to upload normal cds, but when i try to insert several previously burned cds they show up as a blank cd and ask me what to do. or when i was finally able to burn an mp3 cd, i tried re-inserting it, and it shows up blank as well, is this some kind of software update or setting i can change, please tell me it is!
    thanks....

See if this helps and welcome to the discussions.

  • OS Lion reading old burned CDs as Blank

I am going through some burned CDs and attempting to copy them to my new iMac, but each one is being read as a Blank CD. Regular factory audio CDs seem to work fine. Any type of home burned CD is being read as blank. Any insight on how to fix this would be appreciated, thanks.

How old are these CDs?  Burned CDs can go 'bad", especially if done onto inexpensive media.  I wouldn't expect that kind of failure rate though.  Still, if the drive reads regular media it isn't the drive as such.  I guess it could be the drive doesn't like your older CDs (it isn't a case of software), but usually it happened that old drives could not read  burned CDs and not new drives not being able to read older burned CDs.
Are these audio CDs and do they play on another audio player?

I am attempting to fix an issue with a friend's iTunes for Windows. Although previously this computer using this media was able to burn audio CDs through iTunes, recently, an error has appeared before any burn. When loading the proper amount of time to fit on a CD, iTunes claims:

  • Burning CDs problems

I keep having trouble burning CDs, data rather than music etc.
It starts to write then maybe halfway through it will cancel burning and say there was an error.
It seems really random, sometimes if I try a different brand of CD or try again with another few CDs it does work.
There is a code that appears when the error message appears but I haven't managed to write it down, is there any number or things it could be or is my drive knackered?!

It's mainly been when I have either saved work from Quark or Photoshop etc. to either a Burn Folder or just to a blank CD on the desktop. I haven't used an actual application other than the Mac 'Burn Disc' button?!
It has been happening more and more often, both when writing and verifying, but I've been getting a different message each time, along the lines of:
Communication to disc drive failed. Error code 0x80020022
    Unexpected error. Error code 0x8002006E
    Didn't verify. Error code 0x80020063
Do these codes tell me anything? Is my drive dying?!?!

  • Cannot Burn CDs

I have tried to burn discs many times using itunes, and usually when i try it intializes and starts writing the first track then it cancels right away and an error message come up and says "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured (4261)" andi know its not my discs because i bought a brand new pack and tried them and ive tried multiple brands of dics and they all do this to me. Now the even weirder thing is that it doesnt always do this, sometimes, though it rare, it actaully copies the disc. please help me.

I have the same problem reported by shoeshank. I have a Dell desktop with Windows XP Pro; iTunes is ver. 7. I am able to burn text files to CDs using Roxio software without difficulty, so I presume my CD drive works okay. After iTunes' first failure to burn, the error message included the option to "calibrate the cd" which box I checked, but that did not seem to help, as I continue to get the error message "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4261)". Like shoeshank, iTunes on my computer seems to recognize the CD drive and the CD because the burn process does initiate. The error message appears after the sliding progress bar has gone about a fifth of the way. In iTunes, I ran Help>Run Diagnostics, which generated the following report:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

    PROBLEM SOLVED - I HOPE !!
Rather than visit a Genius Bar, I opted to buy an inexpensive (<$40) external USB-connected CD/DVD reader/burner (Samsung SE-208AB). I discovered that it too exhibited the same problem whereby DVDs and CDs burned in the Finder failed verification almost as soon as it began. Even though the burned discs appeared OK in that the files/music/movies were as they should be.
In addition to all the steps taken above, I also used the Recovery Disk to re-install a copy of Mountain Lion in case something was messed up. To no avail, the problem persisted.
After much more searching I discovered a tip that I had not tried. Someone had found that deleting the Finder preference file resolved their problem, in 2008 no less. So with nothing to loose, I deleted the Finder preference file, restarted and burned 3 discs flawlessly. Attached below is a screen shot from the Console app (in the Utilities folder) showing the most recent disc burning tasks including the intial one that failed verification. The highlighted text is my inserted note and not from the Console app. Interstingly it apperas as if iTunes does not perform a disc verify after a burn as the verify task is absent from the Console log.
The Finder preference files can be found at User/Library/Preferences/...
Of note is that none of these discs will work in the internal Superdrive and so I must assume that the internal Superdrive is offcially busted and must have failed coincidentally with my upgrading to Mountain Lion.

Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . • ITunes, Burning Cds, Converting to AIFF

I am using a Mac Mini with MacOS 10.4.3 and I cannot get I tunes to burn songs to
    CD.
    I do the following:
    1. Make a playlist
    2. Select all items (either by ticking box or clicking the title. I have tried
    both.)
    3. Click the burn disc icon
    4. Insert a blank disc
    5. Click burn disc icon again.
An alert window appears saying: there are no songs to burn on this playlist.
    Add songs . . . etc.
When I try the same process on our other computer (an eMac with MacOS 10.3) I have no problem. The burn takes place as expected.
I have also tried with the Mini, using Toast 6, by converting the songs to AIFF
from the Advanced menu. This appears to happen, with the orange button and bell
ong signal, but when I check through get info (Command I) it says they are
still Quick Time movie files. Toast will not accept them as audio files.
Can you suggest any solution to either or both these problems?
    Regards,
    William Johns

Did you set the burning perferences to the correct disc format?
What type of disc are you trying to burn (Audio CD or MP3)?
You can find step by step instructions in the iTunes help.
After launching iTunes Help, go to Contents>Burning CDs or DVDs.
There you will find several topics about creating CDs.
If you convert tracks in iTunes, they will not be 'converted', but iTunes will make copies of these track in the format chosen by you.
These copies will appear in your Library.
I can (faintly) remember reading some posts about troubles with mp3's recognized as QT movies.
Searching these forums may give you a hint.
Maybe someone else can clarify this.
