Burned CDs no longer play on imac G5 - commercial CDs play okay

My imac G5 is no longer recognizing any previously burned CDs. When I inset the CD I get "You've inserted a blank CD. Turn burn items on the CD....." etc. The CDs play okay in my CD player, just not on the imac.
The imac still recognizes and plays commercial CDs and CD ROMS.
I updated to iTunes+ two days ago. Since then I have been getting occasional "You're attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I have burned several CDs that also play on my CD player but will not play on the imac once the disc is injected and reinserted into the imac.
I have run the utilities disc and done repair file permissions. I have run the repair utility and get a "No problems found" result. I have also run a memorex cd cleaner disc.
I would suspect a hardware problem except it is only the discs I have burned that I get the "blank cd" notification.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? This is driving me nuts!!!!
Thanks for any suggestions.
Phil

iMacs are notoriously picky about CDs and DVDs. I suggest you post to the iTunes forum, they are more likely to have experience with this sort of problem: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=789
although I looked through the old posts there and couldn't find an exact duplicate of your problem.
If you find a solution, please let us know,

Like many other users, I can no longer burn CDs since my recent upgrade to version 6.0.1. I was able to burn CDs with no problems before this upgrade, but now when I click "Burn Disc", iTunes freezes with no error message. I have to exit out using Ctrl-Alt-Del, as iTunes is not responding.

The answer is in the diagnostic! Go to the Toshiba site (I've been so nice and found the link for you!)

Try updating your drives firmware. Click 'Firware Updates' on the right hand side of this page, then follow the instructions and download the update, then install. See if that helps. Its worth updating the firmware anyway :P

  • ITunes CDs no longer play on commercial CD players

I am frustrated and quite miffed with iTunes. Earlier iterations of iTunes made it simple to burn CDs of my music (when I say my music, I mean music that I composed). These CDs could play on virtually any CD player; the one in my home, the one in my car, the 1995 model covered with paint splatters and construction dust that I haul around in my trunk. Now, I can't get them to play on anything except for another computer. Yes, I have clicked the AUDIO CD button, varied burn times, etc. The fact is, I have done nothing different than what I have always done: just hit the burn button and got a quality CD that played on any CD player. iTunes has apparently changed in its continual updating sequences. If there is something I am doing wrong, please let me know. However, if these constant updates have been designed to phase out commercial CD player capabilities in a disguised attempt to make interfacing with commercial CD players obsolete, forcing consumers to purchase iPod accessories, then shame on Apple. If this is the case, I will no longer be an iTunes customer.

I appreciate the prompt reply and suggestions am happy to know that it is still working well for others, and relieved that it is not a marketing plot.;) I have tried burning from different batches and brands of CDs, each of the CD-R variety. Yes, I am able to successfully burn data. But, more than that, I am able to play the CD on any computer (including PC) with a CD drive; just not on on commercial CD players. I found an older version of Roxio Toast on my HD, but it only launches in classic and won't recognize my CD/DVD drive. I'll get a newer version and see if that works. Of course, that still doesn't solve the iTunes burning issue ("burning issue," indeed). Perhaps it's my drive. However, I also tried copying the music files to an HP, burned a CD-R on that system and got the same results. This is why I jumped to the conclusion that the problem may lay in the programming of the files. All I know is that it used to work wonderfully and now it doesn't.

  • Trouble playing back burned cds created from itunes

I'm going crazy trying to figure this out so any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!! I've imported several cd into itunes and burned them onto a CD-R. The tracks show up and the cd will play on my computer but, will not play on my stereo system. The tracks are aif files and I've made sure I've selected Audio cd in prefrences. I've burned many cds with my old Mac and they played fine on my stereo, car, etc. but, since buying my new G5, I haven't been able to listen to a burned cd from this system? Any solutions? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey, I've had my iMac Intel Duo for a week now and previously used iTunes on my PC. My car stereo has always had problems playing my CD-R burned cds from iTunes (both PC & now iMac). I drive a 2001 Audi A4T with it's original cd/radio. My husband and son however have ALWAYS been able to play any of the cds I burned from iTunes successfully. Currently running iTunes V 6.0.4.3 and it was just today that I was successful burning a playlist that my car stereo could read. I just kept trying all different brands of cds until one finally clicked; and in this case was an imation CD-R 700MB/80MIN. Good Luck. (I truly don't believe it's the burner......)

  • Cannot burn CDs on iMac G5

I see a lot of people have been having various problems with burning CDs and DVDs on the iMac G5. I have had a similar problem.
I could not burn any CDs, but I could burn DVDs. This affected iTunes, Standard folder burns and Toast. But I could burn DVDs! I tried different manufacturers CDs but this made no difference. In iTunes I got the error about "unable to calibrate laser", in other applications I got an error code.
I fixed this by modifying the CD/DVD System Preferences to Open Finder when a new CD or DVD is inserted. It was originally set to open Toast.

I'll try and be as concise as possible, but I want you to know that I've tried a few things and asked a bunch of people and still no definitive solution.
I copied an uncopywritten DVD-R on my iMac G5 using disc utility and the method described in an Apple article. I used a nextech 8x 4.6GB DVD-R. The copy DVD-R plays fine on the DVD player in my computer, but not on my JVC
HR-XVC2OU(R) home DVD player, which does play the original DVD-R. I took the copy DVD-R to a store, and it played on a Pioneer DVD player. I made a copy on a Maxell DVD-R, but had the same result. The recorder in my computer seems to be Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-K04F. Apple Chat folks said the disk utility would reproduce the DVD in the same format it was originally which, according to the JVC people, is compatible with their unit. If there's not an easy solution, I'll settle for a definitive one. If you've reached this point, thank you. I'm at the end of my rope.

Where soes someone go to get offical help wth Apple iTunes?
You would call Apple Support, for which you would probably be charged for the support.
Note that just because those CDs work with your old computer doesn't mean that it's still not an issue with those CDs and the burner in your newer system. Some CD brands just don't work well with some optical drives. If you haven't tried a different brand, and if you're using CD-RW trying CD-R, I would suggest you give that a try just to eliminate that possibility.
    Regards.

  • ITunes will no longer rip or burn CDs

When I start iTunes it says "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes."
When I try and reinstall, it says that I have a newer version and it can not complete the install.
I have been burning and importing for over a year, plus buying so I have over 1400 songs.
If i uninstall and start over I'm assuming that I will lose all my songs. don't want that!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

have all the little checkboxes to the left of your songs become unchecked?
if so, Ctrl-click on one of the boxes to do a "global recheck". do you get continuous play again?

  • Can no longer burn cds?

I recently upgraded Itunes and now it says i can't burn cds from my Itunes store purchases.
Why is this please? Does this mean that I can no longer keep copies of my Itunes music on CDs to use on another system?
I would appreciate some enlightenment for this please.

The registry settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning cds and dvds are missing . This can be a result of installing other cd burning software. Please re-install itunes.
for some advanced techniques for dealling with that one, see:

but if you'd prefer to try some quicker and dirtier techniques (that don't involve a registry edit), post back and we can run through those as well.

  • Can no longer burn CDs in iTunes

I have successfully been burning CDs in iTunes until recently. I can now no longer burn an audio CD. The CDs I am using are the same as before (CD-R, same make etc) and I am trying to burn albums purchased through iTunes. No error message comes up, it just doesn't burn. I have the latest version of iTunes loaded but can't remember when I loaded this. Perhaps my problems have occurred since then? Can anyone help?

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?

  • Can no longer Play DVD's or Burn Disks in on Macmini

    Hi,
I have recently rebuilt my MacMini with a new WD500 Gb hard drive with Snow Leopard and that went fine.
One issue that maybe related is that I can no longer play DVD's or burn items to DVD. I have had a look in system profiler and can see the Pioneer drive in the ATA Device Tree.
When I insert a DVD, I hear the drive trying to run it but after a while it just spits the DVD out. If I insert a blank DVD, it recognises the DVD and I can select it to burn but when it starts the burning process it fails and again spits the disc out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gavin

http://www.macsales.com/ has numerous good optical drives. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ may list others.
Note for 2 USB port Mac Minis (as opposed to 4 or 5 on the rear), be sure to get a Firewire optical drive, as Mac OS X won't boot USB on PowerPC Macs except in rare USB model drives that are hard to find.

  • HELP! I updated my software and can no longer burn cds using iTunes

I followed all of the troubleshooting steps for not being able to burn a cd. I was able to burn cds with other cd burning programs installed on my pc, but itunes was the only program that would not burn the cd correctly. itunes would go through the entire process of burning: check media, check playlist, burn cd, finish burning cd. itunes would even ask me if I wanted to import the new cd into my playlist after it finished "burning" my cd but there was never anything on the cd. I also tried playing the cd using other programs and in other equipment but it never worked. I updated my software recently and I thought I could try to go back to an older version because I never had this problem before. However, when I uninstalled the newer version and tried to reinstall an older version of itunes, the older version of itunes refused to open because my music library was apparently created by the newer version of itunes. I don't know what to do to be able to burn cds again. At this point, I would much rather use another cd burning program but itunes is the only program that will burn the songs that I've purchased from itunes onto a cd.
