Burned DVD glitches in some DVD players

Any answers to this one. I burn my 45 minute program to DVD using idvd. It plays fine on computers, also in some DVD players(Sony) but glitches out and stops playing on many lower end DVD players. Why?

Well that is the first time I have heard all that (not saying it isn't true, just that I have never heard that). My reading suggests that DVD-R are more compatible. In any case, here are my tips for a more reliable burn:
Remember that the DVD is the final product. The last step in a long series of steps. Keep this in mind when taping and editing. Use SP mode, not LP mode on the camcorder. Use 16-bit/48KHz audio. I have read that some image stabilizers offered on camcorders can cause editing problems. The best image stabilizer is a tripod. Keep in mind that MPEG2 compression does not like fast motion, so keep your pans & zooms slow and steady... use that tripod.
Note any problems you had capturing or editing. Double-check the material in the timeline. Gaps in audio or video are bad- fill with slugs if nothing else.
Use good quality blank media. The flavor of choice right now are Verbatims but in the end, you need to find one that works best for you.
NEVER put a label on a DVD. Kiss of Death. Enocurage your competition to label their DVDs!!!! As mentioned, DVDs have alot of information on them, labeling them will throw them off balance in many DVD players. Not good.
Use something like an Epson R200 if you want to put a pretty face on the DVD.
Also mentioned was using a slower burn. Your computer will cache information better than a tabletop DVD player. If the tabletop doesn't have what it needs when it needs it... it will choke.
Try to keep all content under 90-minutes. The longer the content, the lower the bit-rate used to encode and the more chances for problems.
Finally, if you have examined all your options and you still aren't happy- move on to a new tool for Authoring your DVDs. iDVD is part of iLife for for $79. DVDSP is $499.

Burned DVDs skip on some Home Players

I know this is a topic that has been thrown around for some time, but is there any new info out there that can help the playback on the DVD home players that skip when you play burned DVD's (DVD-R & DVD+R). A group of us are trying to fix this problem. We have used different brands of DVD's as well.
One person suggested changing the bit Rate???
What do you know???

supposedly the DVD standard says bitrates of up to 10 Mbps are allowed. in practice, standalone players don't handle this. particilarly older players have problems.
first, the bitrate is the total (video + audio + subtitles). i had a video (miniDV) which i imported into FCP4 did some minor editing and sent it off to Compressor 2.0.1. in the MPEG4 panel, if i used anything higher than 6.5 for the peak bitrate for video, the disk would not work on a playstation 2 (the audio part i used dolby and it was only stereo). same dvd worked fine on Macs, XP and an high end dvd player.
so, yeah, the solution is to make sure the bitrate doesn't exceed 6.5Mbps. it also helps to burn at a slower speed (perhaps) and to use decent media (i've been using both TDK and Fujifilm w/o problems).

Burned DVD plays on some DVD players and not others

Hello all,
First, please forgive my ignorance because I do not work with video much and have no idea what I'm doing. Someone created a video that I need to burn so the DVD can play on any DVD player. The folder is titled "VIDEO_TS" and then the files within it have the following extensions: .BUP, .IFO, .VOB. with VIDEO and VTS as the prefixes. the largest file has a .VOB extension. The master disk is a DVD-R and I burned the video on a Verbatim DVD-R which played fine on my MAc, a PC and two DVD players. However, I tried it on two other DVD players and it could not be played. So now I'm trying to figure out how I can created a DVD that will be compatible with any DVD player or create an alternate version that can be played on the machines that currently can't play the DVD.
Does all of that make sense? I've been all over the internet and seen different suggestions for similar problems but I don't want to spend money or waste time trying different tactics that won't solve my problem.

This is a question very familiar in iDVD forum. I use to answer like this.
• Brand of DVD used matters - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in these) - but there are other GOOD Brands
• DVD-R - plays on more DVD-players than DVD+R as it plays on even older DVD-players (DVD+/-RW - don't even think of it)
• BURN SPEED - is a major contributor to this problem - I never go faster than x4 - I use as standard x2
There are two kinds a blanc DVD can be burned as
• DATA-DVD - Files from DeskTop just stored on a blank DVD - few DVD-players can play this (only very very new ones and they are rare - if I'm rightly informed)
• Video-DVD - a DVD-authoring program is a MUST. iDVD, DVD-Studio Pro, Burn, Roxio Toast etc etc
I'm told that Compressor can do this - I never got it to deliver a Playable-DVD - BUT THIS IS DUE TO MY NEGLECT !
So when iDVD or Toast creates this very special structured DVD - You find the two (must be there) folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (empty) - and if the DVD-player don't find this = it will not play.

Burning discs that work in low-end DVD players

Hi everybody.
Situation: I'm burning DVDs of a rough cut of a documentary for festivals and various interested parties. I'm burning with DVD SP. I was using Memorex 16X DVDs. The resulting DVDs work on computers and most DVD players. But they don't work on mine, a cheap Toshiba (SD-2109).
So I switched to Verbatim 4X DVDs. Same result. They work on computers and most - but not all - DVD players and not on my DVD player.
Should I switch to a different brand/different burn speed? Or is it impossible to burn DVDs on DVD SP that are reliable everywhere? Do I need to be burning with Toast so I can match the burn speed to the disc speed AND use a higher end DVD such as verbatim? Memorex 16X DVDs burned with Toast set at 16X do not play on my DVD player either.

Assuming that everyone who had a failure reported it, that is 4% from burned DVDs from a computer using Memorex, which does not sound that bad believe it or not.
The SD-2109 is a rather old player and some older players can be difficult, there is a difference between a replicated DVD and a burned DVD in how they work/made.
If possible you can try this:

But before you do that, look here for the media playback issue for your machine, it is listed as an issue on a couple of sites - in other words it looks DVD-R/Player issue more than a DVD SP issue.

DVD's hesitate, pixelate and only on some DVD players.

Having a problem with burned DVD's that will lock up or ixelate when played back--on SOME machines?!?!? Other machines play fine. I've cleaned my burner--A LaCie. I've had Apple look at it three times.
I'm thinking of reloading the DVD pro software. Wondering if there is a glitch we can't find.
Anyone have same problem?

Playback can be inconsistent due to many factoirs, even from one machine to the next. Good media and lower video audio rates usually help. Also details on how you made the project, settings and the rest. Take a look at this link:

Burned DVD does not work in all players

Hi all,
I am quite new to authoring my own DVDs, but since I married more or less recently I thought it is a nice idea to author a DVD with our wedding pictures for family and friends. So I spent enough time in iDVD selecting themes, slide shows, music etc. Finally a previewed everything and - yeah - happy.
So I wrote a disk image and burned this using the apple disk tool. So far so good. Mounting the newly recorded DVD workes perfect and the DVD player app works like no charm. Every menu, sound - as I want it.
Happy, running down to the living room and try it in the stand alone DVD player (Sony HD recorder) and - big disappointment. DVD runs, first menu pops up, and the slide show starts. But after the end, it does not return to the menu, it just keeps looping the slideshow. To make it even worse, the menu button on the remote just restarts the slideshow. What the f... is wrong?
Is there something I can to / configure to make it work correctly?
Any help is appreciated.

On your mac, open the disc image with apple's dvd player application. Assuming it plays exactly as expected and there are no issues with scene selections, buttons, etc.
Now you can use apple's disc utility (or Roxio Toast) to burn it to dvd-r. I recommend Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Maxell for best results. Do not exceed 4x burn speed.
Let's say you get this far and the burned dvd plays perfectly on your mac. Now it's time to try it out on a set top dvd player. Sony makes some fantastic dvd players but I would try other players as well. Best place to do this is at a store that sells dvd players like Fry's Electronics, Best Buy, Walmart, or whatever stores are available in your own area.
Hand the dvd you created to a salesperson at one of these stores and ask the him/her to help you test drive a variety of set top dvd players to see which ones accept the dvd in question. My guess is that it will work fine on most of these players but if not just come on back for more help.

IDVD created DVD plays on some DVD players and not others, HELP!

Hi everyone,
I just finished a huge wedding photo montage and burned it using iDVD to a standard DVD-R. I popped it into a Sony home DVD player and all went well, and looked great. Next I tried the DVD in a Mintek portable DVD player (so it's easier to take to the wedding and connect to the LCD projector) and the DVD is not recognized. I tested another computer burned DVD (from a wedding video that was burned on a PC) in the mintek and it does work. I also tested the mintek using a standard store bought DVD movie and it worked fine.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening? I've browsed through the prefs for iDVD in search of some "compatibility" options but there aren't any.
The wedding is Saturday so I'm really hoping to get this sorted out quickly.
BTW I'm using the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 (the one that came standard in the original 1GHz, 17" Powerbook)

Your problem is the Mintek portable DVD player.
Some older DVD players will not play the newer burned media.
This is by design to force conusmers to always upgrade and update there equipment to stay a head of the technology curve.
I had the same problem with a 2 year old stand alone player wouldn't play anything I burned. It would play on other computers and on newer stand alone players but not on a 2 year old player. (VERY FRUSTRATING) I bought a new cheap stand alone and quess what , All was good it played.
There are different codes that are on these players that distingish the players capability.

Error Messages When Burning / Disk only plays in certain DVD players

When burning most all of my DVD's in DVD Studio Pro, after all of the encoding in the burn process and the program starts the initialization, I get a Media Error Calibration Error message. When I retry to burn, everything seems fine. But, my DVD's only play in some DVD players. Others say unreadable disc. Any ideas?

Many times, media can cause your problem, I use Maxell myself, (never had any compatibility issues. Here's a URL to a site that rates the quility of many different kinds of media and there reliability.

Burned DVD skips frames (?) on DVD players

I recently used my EyeTV 200 to encode some video, which I then exported to iMovie, and then sent it to iDVD from iMovie. I then burned the video to a DVD using iDVD. The burned DVD plays fine on my computer, but does not play correctly on two stand-alone DVD players (one purchased several years ago and one purchased within the last year). During any significantly speedy motion in the image, the moving parts have a jerkiness to them, sort of like it is dropping frames, but there is also a sort of ghosting effect, where the person moving on-screen is seen in the current frame and last frame's position. It's very distracting, and I can't figure out how to fix it, because the file plays fine at every earlier stage in the process.
The encoding settings in EyeTV are as follows:
MPEG-2
NTSC 720x480 D1
Constant bit rate of 15.0 Mbps
GOP structure: IBP frames
Audio: 384 kbps at 48.0 kHz
The EyeTV file (8.4 GB) plays fine. Then I exported it to iMovie (which seems to be a straight conversion to DV), and it plays fine in iMovie. Then I clicked the "Create iDVD Project" button. I set up my menus, etc, in iDVD, and it plays fine there as well. iDVD is set to encode using Best Quality (the video is 1 hr. 15 min. long). I burned the project to a Maxell DVD-R 8x single-layer disc using a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D*. As I mentioned before, the resulting DVD plays fine using Apple's DVD Player software, but exhibits this weird skipping on both an old and a new stand-alone DVD player.
I have looked everywhere for some sort of preference setting to boost the quality of the rendering in iDVD (thinking that might be the problem), but the fact that the final product plays fine on the computer seems to suggest that that isn't the problem, but I don't know what else it could be. I have plenty of free space on my hard drive, and a dual-processor 1.25 GHz G4 should be plenty of horsepower to encode this thing.
Any insight into this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EyeTV is what produced the original file. I knew that re-compression could produce problems as I moved from EyeTV to iMovie to iDVD to burned DVD, so to avoid that as much as possible, I put the settings as high as possible - that's why the EyeTV file is an 8.4 GB file for 75 minutes of video, which is a pretty large file for that amount of video.
But like I said, there is no problem with the quality of the EyeTV file, or the iMovie file, or the iDVD file. They all play beautifully. The burned DVD plays beautifully when it is played on the computer. The only problem is when I try to play the burned DVD on a stand-alone DVD player with a TV.

Just my thoughts to add to the excellent answers above.
• BRAND of DVD used - Matters when doing Video-DVDs
Memorex, NoName etc cheap brands usually do NOT work
I only Use Verbatim (more organic dye in these)
• Type of DVD - matters
- DVD+/RW - usually results in problems
- DL-DVDs are more problematic than SL-DVDs
- DVD+R are a more modern sort - BUT PLAYS BADLY or not at all on older DVD-players
I only use DVD-R
• BURN SPEED - matters
- Best in iDVD app - IS NOT BEST at all but results in lot's of Burn Errors = Doesn't play well or at all
I set this down to x2 or x4 max.

Final Burn Not Working On All DVD Players

Hey Guys - I just completed a DVD (first time using DVDSP) for a client and they just called to tell me that the master copy isn't working on some DVD players they've tried. It's been working on their computers, and it worked on my Samsung DVD player at home, but they're having issues. I just upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2. If I need to include more info about the project just ask. Thanks for any help you can provide.

When they say isn't working, do they mean not playing or not playing well? How did you burn the disc?
Did you do a clean install of the Studio (removed other versions?) there seemed to be some issues with that (more so in otheer apps)

IDVD - Glitch in Music on burned DVD

Have a DVD project with 114 slides and music is from ITunes (3 Songs in a Playlist). Before burning to DVD everything works great - it even burns great. It goes for about 12 minutes. However when playing back on the DVD player (about 7 minutes in) the music stops for about 1 second or 2 seconds - then continues on fine to the conclusion. The graphics are fine.. Can someone help me solve this problem. Thanks

Yes, even though iDVD can now accept more than 99 photos, many DVD players cannot. They 'count' up to 99, and then pause briefly to reset and start counting again. Check your slideshow and see if the 'glitch' in playback is at the 99-100 slide position.
If you try the DVD in another DVD player it may work better, but many of them do this.

Widescreen format play's back in 4:3 on SOME dvd players?

Can anyone help? I shot and edited a video in actual 16:9 format (canon xl2 & FCP). When I exported to a quicktime file I changed the video properties to 853 x 420 as stated in an earlier post to make FCP widescreen work with iDVD widescreen. And that works! When i burned to DVD using iDVD I tried playing it back on my Panasonic DVD player and it played back in 4:3, cropping off the sides. But when I played the same DVD on my Playstation 2 on the same TV it played back in 16:9 perfectly fine. I tried it on two other DVD players and one worked (JVC player) and the other didn't (another Panasonci)? So I am confused what is going on. On the first DVD Panosonic player that didn't work I stuck in a 16:9 format DVD that was burned using Adobe Encore and it worked fine, so I don't believe it is a settings issue with the actual player (I think anyways). Does anybody know what is going on? Thank you.

I've found that you have to go into Setup on some DVD players and make changes. Something like Letterbox or just 16:9 setting. Try it.

DVD created in iDVD don't run well in some DVD players

I recently edited a two hour wedding in Final Cut Pro 5.11 then made the DVD on iDVD using a Memorex DVD-R, after burning I tested in my DVD player and iMac and it ran well, then I took it to a TV/DVD combo and it freezed in several parts of the movie?
Why did this happened? Does it have to do with the export settings in Final Cut, or the burning settings on iDVD? or what?

Basically, you want to burn at 4x or lower for your DVD disk in order to minimize errors and be campatible with the most consumer DVD players. Some of the older DVD players have trouble with the higher burn speeds, and sometimes poor disk media can cause difficulties. Maxell or Verbatim DVD-R disks are the recommended media.
iDVD doesn't let you set burn speeds, but you can do it by using Roxio Toast or by burning your iDVD project via the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility application on your iMac hard disk. The recommended procedure is to save your iDVD project to a disk image (an option in the File menu). All the encoding will take place as if you were burning a disk. When the disk image is completed, you can play it back on your screen using the DVD player application on your hard disk. The playback will display exactly as it would if you had burned a DVD disk. If everything is satisfactory, open your Disk Utility application in the Utilities folder. You will see your newly created disk image as an .img file in the pane that pops up. If it's not there, drag your disk image into the pane. Then select the disk image. Insert a DVD-R disk. The "Burn Options" will change to 4x speed. (Use 2x if it offers that option.) Click "Burn", and the disk will burn fairly quickly, because all of the encoding already has been done. Then see if your disk will play on your TV/DVD combo. You could also take it to a consumer electronics store (like Frys or Circuit City) and try playing the disk in several DVD players to check for compatibility.
I don't know anything about Final Cut, but I doubt that your use of that program is causing any problem because you were able to create a successful disk that played on your iMac DVD player. The issue is probably with your TV/DVD combo player.
There are experts on this forum more knowledgeable than I, and perhaps they will offer additional comment.

Plays sometimes? some dvd players, not others

I have a new MacBook Pro with a super drive and the latest version of iDVD. I work doing video editing but I never burned anything to DVDs before. So I used iDVD and I burned a few on the Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. We have a DVD production system that prints right onto the surface so I use no paper labels. After making a few DVDs, I played it with iDVD. I put it into a PC and played it with CyberLink's PowerDVD. They both played fine. But when I play in Windows Media Player, it doesn't work. My boss has grabbed a couple and played them on his PC and he just gets a few seconds of menu music, then it goes black. I am not sure what he used to play it. Also, some clients have taken them home and are unable to play them in a DVD player and their computers. The clients are old, and they could have old dvd players but that shouldn't matter. Before I did the edited we had them as just a video file and would play on insertion (also on dvd-r) and would work fine. So we didn't switch anything except doing the editing. We mass produce these DVDs and distribute them to clients so these need to be compatible with more. Why don't these work with everything? Is there a way to make them more generic to play in more places? I used final cut pro to edit, exported as a .mov file, then dragged to iDVD. I used just the standard revolution menu layout. Nothing fancy. Any ideas?

Once you have the disk image, you would either need to burn a disc or in some way copy that to your duplicator hard drive for duplication. Most duplicators I am aware of let you control the burn speed. I wouldn't choose the slowest or the fastest. 4x is my sweet spot right now.
I won't to go back to why has the ability to play changed question. Are you saying you had a DVD NOT made with iDVD that plays but using iDVD it doesn't play? If so, that has already been answered: could be the menu, could be uncompressed audio, could be just that particular compression.
Are you saying you have the same video made with iDVD that plays in some players but not others? Same answer! Could be the menu the player doesn't like, could be uncompressed audio the player doesn't like. Could be the compression the player doesn't like. I have seen some players that will only playback a CBR (not VBR) disc- the under 60-minute version of iDVDs encoding.
Are you saying you have a disc made on iDVD that played once on a DVD player but that same disc now won't play again? I would say something about the disk integrity has changed. Could be scratched. Could be an "invisible" defect. The only thing you now is that this one disc doesn't work anymore. If this is systematic of all your discs, I would have to say it's a compression issue.
