Burned DVD movies skip/freeze on regular DVD player

I've made a few home movies, and burned them on to DVDs. When I play them on a regular DVD player (Sony), the movie skips/freezes from time to time. I've burned the same movie on my other MacBook, and this does not happen.
Could it be that the SuperDrive on this MacBook is broken?

Hi,
I would take a look at the following:
1. Try a different brand blank DVD medium when you burn the disc. Set top players seem to be a lot more sensitive to the brand of disc than computers.
2. Burn the iDVD project to an image file. Share the image file over to another Mac and burn it there. See if you still have problems with playback.
3. If you still had problems with an image file burned on a different computer, then you know it must be something in the data format of the disc. I've experienced problems with some set top DVD playback machines that can not handle sustained high bit rate content. As far as I know, iDVD uses a relatively simple encoding strategy, and does not do much to reduce the information content of the encoded video stream. If you start with a high resolution QuickTime or DVI import, playback machines with limited disc performance might not be able to keep up.
I did some fairly superficial Google searches and looked at iDVD, and I didn't see any means of setting up the bit rate and encoding strategies that iDVD will use. Perhaps, somebody with a little more experience can comment?... A professional DVD encoding software suite will do a multi-pass encoding - once to figure out optimization and then again to render output. That sort of analysis might require an over-night run to make the disc. I have a feeling Apple avoided that in order to make iDVD more consumer friendly. It also avoids stealing market from more professional products like Final Cut.
You might be able to go into iMovie HD to edit the clips. You could send them to QuickTime, and reduce the bit rate there, then import the QuickTime clips into iDVD.

  • How do you save and burn a movie to play on a dvd player to show on your tv

I finished a movie, and saved it as a MP4 file. How do you save and burn a movie to play in a dvd player and show on your tv.

I found an iDVD program through Softonic. Do you know anything about reliability and if it is safe to download this one? If not do you have any suggestions for one I might download.

  • Movie skips/freezes periodically after burned using Disk Utility

I am trying to make copies of some home movies from the original DVD using Apple's Disk Utility. First, I created the master .cdr image and have burned several DVDs with inconsistent results.
I am using 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs and burning at 4x or 2x speed using the internal Superdrive. Sometimes the burned DVD will skip or freeze periodically, sometimes it will work fine.
I need to resolve this issue so that I can have consistent quality burns. Any suggestions?

I had this problem a year or two ago.
I don't think the built in imac DVD read /write drives are up to the task.
    For quick reliable results:
Toast Titanium 8 and a Sony External Rewritable Drive.
The sony is a noisy brute but its fast and reliable.
I've burnt 100's of Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs and had very few failures.

  • DVD movie skips and breaks up when playing on tv

Ok, I have made a DVD using iDVD 08 and it works perfect for all my movies and slideshows (in my dvd player) except one.
There is one movie that breaks up or skips forward when I try and play it.
The movie seems fine in imovie and plays on my Mac with no errors!
I am at a loss what to do to fix this? Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

My guess is you can't fix this type of issue. It depends largely on the dvd player and secondly on your media and the burn speed you chose.
You can try burning a disc image from the file menu in iDvd and then lowering the burn speed to 4x or lower. Use verbatim and Maxell for best results. A third option would be to try a quality DVD Lens Cleaner kit from either Maxell or 3M. (don't use less expensive brands since they can actually cause more issues than they solve).
Btw .... Disc Images burned with Roxio Toast (as opposed to iDvd) to quality media such as those already mentioned above often play well on a wider variety of set tops under these circumstances ....
    Good luck on this.

  • TS2180 DVDs won't play in regular DVD players iDVD burns with no errors the DVDs always get out into a folder ???

Dear Apple friends The iDVD burns DVDs with-out any error messages but DVDs dont play in regular DVD players I notice that the DVD burns to a folder and there is no setting to prevent this How do you burn the DVD with-out it getting put into a folder ??? Thanks Mike

That often is a result of using inferior DVD disks and burning at too high a speed.  What brand and type of disk did you use and what speed did you burn at?
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Havind I- DVD, burned disks/movies copied onto lots of DVDs.

I made a DVD for the company I work for. They would like to make several copies and send it to other departments. They are asking all about layers, capacity and other things and speaking a foreign language!
Can a company who copy DVDs for companies just take the DVD I have made and whizz is through their machine or can i movie projects that are burnt, only be burned again from scratch rather than copied. It has chapters and all the other bits that IMovie / IDVD can use etc.
Also, some people have had difficulties playing the DVD on combi tv/dvd players and some other players. Currently use DVD/RW+ disks but having read some posts may switch to DVD- (which i hear are even worse for compatibility as many machines dont play DVD- at all!.
Help - what if they can burn it and then it doesn't work, I will look very bad!

yepp, you can use your "master" to copy as much copies you need, including all chapters etc...
    using your Mac, read...
HOW TO copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
… and for sure, a commercial copy center can do that too... RW+ is a little exotic, but.. anyhow... (ANYone could erase your disk! it is reWritable...!)
for best compatibility, use dvd-r; + is little/not supported on older standalones; same wir -rw media.... keep away from dual layer -rw, these are just supported by the latest standalones and computer drives....

  • Why can't I burn a movie to play in a DVD player?

I made a movie in iMovie well it was more like a slide show I did with pictures and dropped some music in there However when I went to burn the the movie I got a message saying that I only can play this movie in a DVD/DVD rom will not play in a standard DVD player. Then I tried sharing the movie to iDVD but I still can't burn into DVD format for (DVD Player) Why do I have to select new themes in iDVD all I want to do is burn the movie that I created to play in a dvd player.
    Thank You

This feature creates a duplicate of your project onto
a CD or DVD ROM. It does not create a video DVD for
playing in a DVD player. Do you want to continue?
This is the message that I received in iMovie when I
went to burn to disc File>Burn to disc
There are two kinds of DVDs we can create from within iMovie.
    1. A DVD containing iMovie project files as Mac files. This kind of DVD functions a lot like a hard disk. The File > Burn to disk command burns the iMovie project onto the DVD. This project movie cannot be played on a TV.
Most iMovie projects are too large to fit on a single-sided DVD, which is limited to about 4.6GB of data. One hour of iMovie video requires 12GB of disk space.
    2. A DVD containing files encoded (converted) in the MPEG-2 format, which DVD players know how to play. This type of DVD can be played on a TV. When converting your iMovie project to the MPEG-2 format, iDVD compresses the video and audio so (about) two hours of video can fit on a single-sided DVD.

  • How do I, and what do I need to burn a DVD that works in a regular DVD.....

player, I burned a movie I got of of itunes twice to blank DVDs but neither one will play in our DVD player. What am I doing wrong?

If you have a Super Drive in your MacBook, you can use the Disk Utility to make a disk image from an unprotected DVD (for example, one that has been burned before is not copy-protected). As the "format" for the disk image, you can choose "CD/DVD Master". Once you've created a disk image, you can use the Disk Utility again to burn that image to a blank DVD.

  • DVD Does not play in regular DVD Player

So I created my DVD and it does not play in a regular DVD player but it will play on my mac. I have had issues before with it being formatted as an HD DVD on the older version of DVD Studio Pro so I checked that and it is formatted as an SD DVD. So I checked the Build log and found notes saying that certain files were not part of the DVD directory and would not be included on the DVD. I have never seen anything like this before so I am assuming that is my issue, but I have no idea how to solve this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The warnings are the normal ones I am guessing (.lay will not be included etc.)
When you open the DVD in finder on the Mac, do you see folders called VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS or are there pother folders? If so then you may have made a HD DVD again. Could be the issue, or your old build location still had old HD DVD files in it.
What type of media (brand?) did you use? How many players did you try?

  • When i try to burn a movie onto a new blank dvd it says ther's not...

...enough space and i just bought tdk blank dvd disks 4.7 gb. so how could that not be enough ??? i was also able to burn dvds on blank disks before too, without any problems...someone please help me out !

Ok let's do it like this. Open
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22715
This is free it is Mactheripper.
Place the Movie in and it will place a folder on your desktop of the Movie.
Close MTR and then I suggest Popcorn.
    Costs around $49.00
Open Popcorn and then drag the folder to Popcorn and then in the lower right corner there is a big RED dot afteryou insert the DVD-R click on the red dot. It will chime when it's done.
You will have a pristine copy.
I also suggest you use DVD-R Media it is the most widely used and recognized, and will play on 95% of players and computers.

  • How to burn .flv movie files to a viewable dvd

i have an older macbook (2ghz intel duo core 2 duo, 2 gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram). i would like to burn some .flv movie files to a dvd which can be viewed on an ordinary dvd player. (i am unfamiliar with the computer's movie making software, unfortunately) is there a simple, user friendly method to do this? any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Have you tried just dragging them into iDVD? Don't see any reason why that shouldn't  work. Not saying you'll get the greatest quality.

  • Burning Downloaded movie to DVD/ placing movie to ipod

    Hey
I have recently downloaded a movie off itunes and i am having a couple of issues with it.
    1. The movie won't go onto my ipod (it did once but never played- went back to menu)
    2. I would like to put the movie onto a dvd to play on my dvd player. I have tried various programs- they won't take MPEG-4 format- and i tried to burn it off itunes but only gave me the data dvd option and wouldn't play on any of the dvd players in my home.
If anyone has a solution to these issues that would be great!
    Thanks.

iTunes Movies are copy protected and can't be burnt to a DVD for playing in a regular DVD player. As you've already seen they can only be burnt to a Data DVD for backup/storage.
If you have problems with your download you can email iTunes Store Customer Services from this link. Choose a category that most closely describes your problem and add any additional information in the box provided: Customer Service - iTunes Store Support

  • How do i burn iTunes movies to dvd

    Hi,
I purchased several t.v. programs from itunes , would like to make more room on mac desktop, so want to burn programs to dvd's. How do I do that? Thanks, Pamela

You're better off putting the entire iTunes library on an external hard or flash drive. If you want to use DVDs anyway, burn the movie files to a data DVD in the Finder and drag them back when needed.
Content burned to DVD in this way isn't playable outside of a computer, and for DRM protected content, outside of iTunes.
