Burned dvd plays on computers, but not dvd players - help?

Hi,
I'm a noobie. I made a movie in final cut pro 5, then converted it to a quicktime movie, then saved it in idvd. The movie plays on all computers, but it's not recognized by dvd players connected to tv's. My questions are:
1. What's a quick way to burn onto a dvd that will be recognized by dvd players that aren't on computers?
2. What's the best way to save the best quality of my final cut movie to a dvd that I can play anywhere?
thanks!

Hi Noob:
Welcome to discussions!
There is no sure-fired way to record to a DVD that every DVD player will recognize. Just too many of them out there.
Try burning a the lowest speed possible (1x to 4x )using a reliable disk like Verbatim DVD-R.
This is worth reading: (I copied it from one of Len Goff's discussion threads...)
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

Let me know what other info you need.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,

  • Why does CD burned as "audio" only play in computers but not car?

I've done all the troubleshooting steps but to no avail. My CDs burned from iTunes play in computers but not in cars. Help!

Some car stereos can't handle anything other than commercially pressed CDs. I find that burned CDs have a limited playable lifespan for my car and have been told by my dealership that the stereo is not rated to play CD-R discs (but that hasn't stopped me). There's something about the fact that home burned CDs are dye-based whereas commercially burned CDs have more of a metal layer abalated write done that makes them more reliable to read.
You might have to look into replacing your stereo with one that can handle CD-Rs. Crutchfield is a good place to research them and the included install kits are great.

  • Burned dvd plays on Mac but not on player

my burned dvd plays on my Mac with no problems but on my dvd player, it just stops after 3 few seconds. any ideas what happened there?
    i used iDvd 4

    Welcome to the Forum.
The most likely reason for consumer DVD players to skip or stop on DVDs that play well in computer DVD drives, are excessive burn errors that the consumer players 'choke on'. All burned media (CD and DVD) has burn errors. Burning at lower speeds tends to reduce the error level, hence the recommendation to burn low-speed media for maximum player compatability. Computer DVD drives have a high level of error correction (after all - you wouldn't want to loose any data on a data DVD) and can handle the errors. Consumer DVD players don't - after all they are designed to playback pressed DVDs with low error rates.
Some consumer DVD players are more sensitive to these errors than others.
Sometimes using a different brand of media will help.

  • DVD Studio Pro Authored DVD plays on iMac, but not PC or DVD Player

Have put several film up on web using FCP. Trying to make DVD of movies using DVD Studio Pro. The DVD plays on my iMac, but not my PC or my DVD player. Any suggestions?

Pop your disc into your Mac. On the disc there should be two folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. If the VIDEO_TS folder is not there, replaced by something else, then you have indeed created a HD DVD. You need to completely start over.

  • My CD/DVD drive reads CDs but not DVDs

    Hi All
I have a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633M DVD drive in my laptop and after about 6 months of use, the drive stopped reading/writing DVDs. It still reads CDs fine and occasionally will read a DVD (completely unprovoked and without warning...!) but is very temperamental and will randomly just stop reading a DVD. Often, the drive will eject and give an error message telling me to insert a disc. I'm not sure what to do.
I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit. I have tried running the Microsoft Fixit application, which recognises that the drive is failing to read DVDs but offers nothing more helpful than that and doesn't fix anything (despite its name...). I have been reading through a number of different forums and have found a range of advice: replacing the drive, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or editing the registry. What should I be doing to fix this problem? Naturally, I'd prefer not to have to replace the drive itself, but if that's the only way...
    Thanks in advance!

The registry thing only works if the drive is completely AWOL from the system so that it does not appear as a drive in "My Computer"....not your issue. The DVD and the CD use different lasers and it is not uncommon for one to go bad and the other not. You can check the function of the DVD by trying to boot from a bootable DVD. If you cannot the drive is bad and needs to be replaced. If it works sometimes and not others it could just need a good cleaning with a DVD lens cleaner.

  • Burned DVD plays in computers, but does not play in DVD players

I found a discussion of a similar problem from back in 2010, but in that thread the only reply was suggested burning at 1x and trying different media. There was no further correspondence so I can't tell if that suggestion resolved the issue. I tried burning again at 1x and using different media (we're using Verbatim) without success, so I ask again.
The problem is with menu navigation in DVD.
The main menu has the probelem. It has four buttons arranged in a 2x2 square that send viewers to 4 submenus. Each submenu has three buttons - play without subtitles, play with subtitles, return to main menu.
In any computer (we've tried it in 8: MACs and PCs) navigation of the main menu works perfectly using the mouse (although not the up/down left/right buttons on the keyboard... is THAT normal?).
But in the four DVD players in which we've tried it we cannot navigate to the button on the lower right using the buttons on their remote controls, although the other three buttons work just fine. This happens in our ancient $29 DVD player, in our brand new $1,000 blu-ray player and in everything in between.
I've looked at the programing and cannot find any difference between the buttons that work and the one that doesn't. The design preview perfectly and to add confusion a previous version of this disc (I had to link one timeline to new media) plays perfectly in any player.
I'm stumped. I'd be panicked except for the fact that, post sign-off, the client has decided to make just one more little change in the video, so I have another couple of days.
    Thanks, JP

I had stumbled across this screen while working on another project weeks ago, but at that moment I was working to deadline and did not pay the least attention to it. Of course, when I tried to go back to the screen I hadn't the faintest idea where it was or what the screen/process was called and, so, had no way to look it up.
It wasn't until you said "Button Routing" that it clicked. THAT sounded like it was exactly the problem, so I trolled HELP and found the answer. Thanks for the very useful stab in the dark.
My test DVD hasn't finished burning, so I'm not absolutely sure myproblem is solved, but I am very confident you have directed me to the solution.
I'm working studio production today and through the weekend, but before I go incommunicado for 4 days, I wanted to say "Thanks a bunch".

  • Drive plays CD's but not DVD's

I have a HP 4520s with a hp CDDVDW TS-L633N, the drive will not play a DVD or a PC DVD Rom Game but will play a CD, I have checked regional settings and checked the drivers and updates, the device manager says the drive is working corectly, the movies and PC DVD Rom game used work in the other computer I tried. Is the drive on it's way out or is there something I have missed? Thanks.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • Dvd plays on iMac, but not on TV?

Made short iMovie from movie clips, then to iDvd. Disc will play back through my G5 iMac but my stand alone player will not accept it to play through my HDtv. Would like to play it thru the TV. Any suggestions?
    Jack

Thanks Shippey: Nothing unusual that I'm aware, but I don't do much with clips. These were made with a Nikon Coolpix. All my DVD' originate as still images, but these little clips are my daughters dog, and the dog is ill, so want a little record for her of the dog barking. Fortunately as I mentioned, the disc will play on my computer, but won't even load on the stand alone player for TV.
BTW, the movie has a theme and title at beginning and end but no sound except what was recorded on the clips.

  • FCP3 to DVD (works on computer but not dvd player)

    Hi all
I'm trying to export a wedding video from FCP3 to DVD using Toast 7. I can Burn a copy that works perfectly on any computer but skips horribly on DVD player, does anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
    thanks for your help

Toast is not the best vehicle to encode DVD material. You might do better with iDVD and you would definitely do better with DVD Studio Pro.

  • DVD drive reads CDs but not DVDs

My DVD drive, CDDVDW TS-L633R, will read CDs, both music and data e.g. Epsom installation disc, but it will not read DVDs, videos or data e.g. MS Office installation disc.  I ran the CD/ DVD diagnosis software - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/?wa=wsignin1.0 and the final message said that the disc (DVD) was not readable.

Means most likely the laser DVD is dead and the drive needs to be replaced.

  • Output from DVD Studio Pro plays on computer but not on TV DVD?

When I output a DVD from DVD Pro (16:9) it plays fine on the computer (and other computers) but not on a conventional DVD player. What am I doing wrong?

I don't want to take over this thread, but figured why start another when I am having this exact same issue. I create my project, everything is good, I simulate it and everything is good, I burn it to disc and play it on the computer and everything is good, try it in a conventional player and it says it's unreadable and kicks it out. I've tried it in Two different players that both have been able to play movies created in iDVD just fine.
I browsed my disc I created and it didn't have the standard files (VOB etc) so I thought maybe I mistakenly burned it in HD, checked the encoder settings adn they were set to HD. Fixed that so it was 16:9 SD, burned another and same exact result. Do I need to create a whole new project so it will encode the whole thing in SD? I did do a new movie track and it should have encoded it at SD but I think everything else (Menus, Slideshow, etc) are all in HD still (maybe???). Any suggestions or help are greatly appreciated.

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

My mini plays cds but not dvds.  Wouldn't this indicate a software, not hardware problem?

Not necessarily, the drive uses a different laser to read DVDs.

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:
