Burned DVD's Show as Blank in Finder

I have a unique problem here, I think. I have burned a series of Memorex DVD's using Toast 8. They burn successfully and mount after the burn is complete. However when I go back to use them again, they do not work and mount in finder as Untitled CD.fpbf.
If I eject and insert the DVD's over and over and over again...sometimes they will finally take and the data will actually appear.
I have tested out the dvd's on other mac's and they do the same thing. However, I have tested them on a PC and they load perfectly. And I have tested them on a Macbook Pro with Parallels...and in Windows XP Parallels they load perfectly, but DO NOT load in OSX. Weird??
Im not convinced that its bad memorex media, because the problem should exist across multiple platforms if its bad media. And it doesnt.
Any suggestions besides changing media or getting an external dvd writer? I have taken this to the Apple Store and they dont seem to care the least bit.
Thanks!

I wish I could help you, but want you to know I can relate - see my earlier post today.
I cleaned the laser lens today (thinking that might help), and burned another copy (from an existing mac the ripper file)- the dvd mounts and plays after the burn in PopCorn, but once I eject it, the mac continues not to detect it and (r)ejects it.
The dvd plays great in the TV's dvd player, which means the cleaner worked sort of, because before the laser lens clean, it played crappy in a regular player... now it works great, but that's not the idea, i.e. the mac should play the dvd!!
There's gotta be a solution other than replacing the superdrive, and memorex (I've used a million times before) may not be the best brand, but it seems to work just fine elsewhere. Why would it burn and NOT play only on the mac?

  • Burned DVD's show up as blank

    Hello All,
I have a very strange problem that I've spent hours trying to figure out now, and haven't made any progress on. Yesterday, I used 'Burn' to burn several data dvd's on an iMac. Each burn completely successfully, and was confirmed good by checking in another iMac. You can also tell the dvd's are burnt by looking at the back of them. I believe they were burnt using the HFS+ filesystem.
Today, I tried using them on my MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11. When I insert them, they show up as Blank DVD's and are mounted as such. Using the Disk Utility to examine the disk, I recieved this information:
    ===========
    Name : HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080M
    Type : Disk
    Disk Identifier : disk1
    Media Name : HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080M Media
    Media Type : DVDROM
    Connection Bus : ATA
    Connection Type : Internal
    Connection ID : Device 0
    Device Tree : /PCI0@0/PATA@1F,1/PRID@0/@0:0
    Locked : Yes
    Writable : No
    Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    DVDROM : Yes
    Optical Media Type : DVD+RW
    Device Type : CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
    Location : Internal
    Total Capacity : 0 Bytes
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 0
    ==================
That looks right, except for the 'Optical Media Type' which should be DVD+R, though I may be misinterpreting what that is talking about.
Since the DVD's are showing up as blank, I tried burning something to them. They wouldn't burn.
I did get brief access to another iMac, and on that machine, one of the DVD's showed up perfectly. I'm at a loss as to what is happening here. Any ideas?
The drive will read other burned or pressed dvd's as well as cd's.
I'm nearly at my wits end here, because I really need this to work. I've been scouring google like a madman and haven't found any answers. It really gets me that the dvd's work in the iMac's, but not one this drive. This drive works well otherwise. This is one of the oddest computer problems I've encountered.

    I'm having the same problem, I can read data cd's but not data DVD's. Data DVD's I've burned after 3 minutes just get ejected, copied installation DVDs just get recognised as Blank DVD's. I've also tried the same DVDs when I boot my Macbook up in windows only, they also get spat out. I have an external DVD drive and the DVD's work fine in that, both in the Mac OS and the windows OS. Which would leave me to believe theres an obvious issue with the;

  • Burned dvd not showing name or files.

I have burned an archive dvd by copying files onto the blank dvd and selecting the "burn" button from the finder window. Everything burns correctly and once the dvd has finished being verified, I have my uniquely named dvd and files displayed.
However, once the dvd is ejected, and then re-inserted, the dvd no longer has the name I have given it, and shows no files in the window.
How do I correct this? Are all the archive dvds I've burned no good?
    Robb

The above burned dvds mount correctly on other drives and files can be copied from them.
How do I get my drive to recognize these dvds as having been burned and contain data?
    Robb

  • IDVD won't burn DVD, keeps showing up with "You Inserted a blank DVD..."

I keep getting the error during the encoding process for burning. The prompt shows up as if i just inserted a new blank DVD, and gives me an encoding video error.
Does anyone know how to prevent this?

You can set preferences within apps like roxio toast to automatically launch when Blank dvd media is inserted into your mac / burner. And if this is the case then you may need to address these preferences so they don't overtake iDvd from the start.
Check your preferences for burning a dvd as to which app/s you have selected to perform this function. Perhaps you have another app other than iDvd selected.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • After Burning playlist - Playlist shows up blank?

I just recently purchased a new external cd/dvd burner (HP DVD 1170e), my original burner burned out, and I seem to be having trouble burning from a created mixed playlist. I've tried this a couple times and the results are the same. I create a playlist with a mix of various artists and click on burn playlist....it goes thru the motion of burning the playlist, even finalizing, and when it's done it shows up as a blank cd.
I have burned cd's that are of the same artist and title (ie YES - fragile) and that works...but when I go to create and burn a mixed cd it always comes up blank - Please help. This is starting to get really frustating.
    Thank you in advance.
    Cheers from Seattle!!

Sounds like your boot image is missing network drivers...
    Couple of checks though:
If the VM in case has already been introduced somehow to ConfigMgr, check Devices -node from the console and search for "Unknown", if there are objects named "Unknown" (not the default x86 or x64 objects!), delete them
Add command line support (F8) to your boot image
Boot your VM, as soon as you get in to WinPE, hit F8 to open command prompt
Run ipconfig to see if the VM get's IP address
If the VM doesn't get IP address, you probably don't have the correct network driver in your boot image. You can obtain the correct driver by installing OS (the same architecture as you boot image, and based on the same FullOS of your boot image, ConfigMgr
    2012 RTM=WinPE3.1=Windows 7, SP1=WinPE4.0=Windows 8, R2=WinPE5.0=Windows 8.1)  on to your VMware VM and then use this tool:
http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/ConfigMgr-Driver-Injector-aae7d17d to capture the needed drivers. Then you can import those drivers to ConfigMgr, categorize them and add the LAN and SCSI drivers to your boot image.

  • 1 Ghz Tibook with superdrive - can't burn dvd's anymore

    Hi,
I keep having problems burning DVD's with my Ti-Book. Am running 10.3.9. It starts the burn (like for iTunes), but then it quits with an error. The drive used to work, and its still burns audio cd's just fine.
The partially burned DVD does show it burned about 1/4 of the disk surface, but then it stops.
    Sound familiar?
    thanks

There is a big difference in iTunes and the Media you choose.
DVD-R Media is the most widely used and recognized by players and computers alike. Many older computers are not able to read or write DVD+R Media and likewise are not able to use the higher speed media of 16X as well.
Some of the newer high speed media is marked on the packaging that it will burn at 1X,2X,4X,8X,16X but you must read the packaging.
Itunes will burn CD or MP3, (DATA is different than Audio or VideoTS)
Some users find the Software funished in there machines harder to use than the Roxio Toast 8 or Popcorn that is basicly choose what you are burning and add the folder and click burn. Were-as iTunes and iMovie are a little harder to use, in that first you must click your Blue Apple and then choose System Preferences and then choose CD-DVD and select what you want to happen when you insert either a Commercial CD or blank CD and the same with a Commercial DVD and a blank DVD.
Burning CD's and mp3's as well as Data and Music and Video TS DVD's each one is different and requires different settings unless you use Toast, which is much easier. Using Toast you simply select Audio, Data, or Video, drag the contents to the box and click burn. This will read write and verify your project if you are using the correct media for your burner.
ERROR messages are caused by the wrong media many times.
Remember if you are using itunes to burn with you need to use CD's if you are trying to copy music to DVD's your best bet is to use the disk utility.

  • Burn DVD from IPhoto slideshow

I read an earlier discussion on this topic but it made the process of burning a DVD from an IPhoto slideshow (with ITunes music track) almost impossible. I did try bringing the show into IDVD but the "formatting" of the "shows" you can choose from aren't appealing. Is there an easy way to do this?

I found it easier to create and burn DVD slide shows from within iDVD, but before creating the slide show, I read the instructions provided by the iDVD "Help" menu. I don't remember the exact steps, but I remember dragging a folder with the pictures into the iDVD window first. I duplicated the folder and saved to the Desktop first, since I had to use Elements to enhance the photos before creating the slide show. By duplicating or creating a copy of the folder with the photos, I did not change iPhoto's folder structure.
You will find the instructions on iDVD's help, under "Getting Started," page 29. Preview will launch to show you all you need to know. However, since I could not copy and paste the text on Preview, I printed just page (29) with the instructions.

  • Can a Macbook Pro 13" (late 2011 model) burn DVD's??

Simplistic question I realise. But I just need a quick answer (on behalf of my mum!...)
If not, what's the best way of going about getting app/s or an external 'plug-in' burner (preferably blu ray), to achieve this?
Also, do the models after this date have this ability or not, I heard 'not'?
    Thanks, Stolky

It has a built-in optical drive, so it can burn DVDs using Disk Utility or the Finder or iTunes.
Starting with the 15" Mid-2012 Retina models you need to use an external optical drive.

  • Finder thinks a burned DVD is blank

After I've created and burned a DVD with iDVDand then try to play it on my computer is does not play. The computer thinks it's blank and asks what to do. If I select "Open in Finder" it mounts and is titled "Untitled DVD". This may have started after the upgrade to 10.6.3.1.1.
These DVDs will play on other DVD players such my G4, a Dell and my TV DVD player.
    Thanks for the help.

After futher checks, it appears as if my DVD drive is half broken. It can burn DVD/CDs. It can read and play commercial DVDs. It can read and play commercial Audio Disks. It can read and play a MP3 disk.
What it can not do is:
Play a burned DVD. It will not startup from a Mac OS 10.5/10.6 Install disk.
To see if the 10.5.3 upgrade caused the problem I tried to install 10.5 on a spare HD. It would read the disk and allow me to start the install, it would read the various install packages and write them to the targeted HD but when it came time to restart and install, it would restart from my main HD and not from the DVD. If I set the startup drive to the DVD it would default to the main drive.
I don't understand this!! It's like being a little bit Pregnant.
    Thanks

  • How to burn a slide show DVD in Elements 11?  Can only find how to burn a Video CD, which doesn't help.

I'm trying to burn a DVD slide show in Elements 11, but can find only how to burn a Video CD.  Is burning a DVD possible in 11?

Do you know if it is Vista Home Premium?
If yes or if you are not sure, look for Windows DVD Maker,
On my Vista Home Premium laptop whe I click on "All Pprograms", within the list of programs I see "Windows DVD Maker" listed as a program.
If you have this program then my suggestion is to use the PSE slide show editor to Output a file to your hard disk
    (use the
-- the "Save to a File"  instead of the "Burn to a Disc"
    and
-- the "Movie File - .wmv"
    and for slide size choose:
    DVD-NTSC if in USA
or DVD-PAL if in Europe or other PAL TV country
Save the wmv file in a hard drive folder where it will be convenient for you to reference for later use in the Windows DVD Maker program.
Once this wmv file has been successfully created, you can play it back with Windows Media Player to verify that you like its contents.
Your next step will be to use the Windows DVD Maker program to write the formats of movie files required for the TV DVD player playback to the DVD disc. I recommend closing Photoshop Elements and then open Windows DVD Maker from the Windows Start menu list.
Windows DVD Maker is a "follow the instructions on the screen" program.
However, one point of confusion is how to add the PSE created slide show to DVD Maker program.
The answer is that you use that .wmv file (from the PSE slide show editor) -- it is now in a video format and is a "video". So you can follow the onscreen directions to add video to DVD Maker.
Note 1: I recommended closing PSE before starting the Windows DVD Maker in order to conserve your PC system resources. It is probably not absolutely necessary.
Note 2: You could also produce the DVD for TV playback by adding Adobe Premiere Elements to your computer.  However just for the purpose of making the DVD from your slideshow I anticipate that using Windows DVD Maker will be simpler and faster.
Note 3: I recommend using a DVD-R disc. What brand of discs do you have?

  • I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite.  I want to create one movie that includes these short movies that I can then either burn to a DVD or show in iMovie's Theater.  How can I do it?

I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite.  I want to combine those short movies into one movie that I can loop and burn on a DVD or show in iMovie Theater.  How can I do it?  The movies are now shared to iTunes.

Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business.

  • G5 Tower - When Burning DVDs Finder Restarts

I have always been able to burn DVDs on this tower with no problems. Now I insert a blank DVD-R to burn and the disk icon shows up. I rename it, drag my files to it and then click 'burn disk'. The computer pauses for a second and then crashes the finder. Haven't made any upgrades to this machine so not sure why this is happening. Anyone else experiencing the same problem? I have set my CD/DVD prefs to 'Open in Finder" as suggested in another thread and it's still not working. The DVD drive is a Sony internal (came with system when new).

You can try upping your ram voltage to 2.65, 2.7 or 2.8, whichever is next.
What are your system and cpu temps just before the crash?
I don't think it is a factor, but generally the DVD writers make better masters than slaves.

  • Problem getting blank DVDs to show up on desktop or in iTunes

    Hello,
I have been trying to burn playlists in itunes onto a blank dvd. I can burn CDs, but when I try to insert a blank DVD, it checks media and spits it back out. Neither will my MAC show the blank dvd on my desktop when I insert it outside of iTunes. I have an internal DVD drive and an external one....same story!!??
The very last time I tried to burn a DVD in iTunes, it started, but then I got some strange message about the spool running out?? I've never seen it before.
    My DVD drives are a Yamaha CRW2100E and a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-1600D
Also, the drive keeps opening and closing...with or without a DVD in it. Again...it works for CDS!!!
I have verified and repaired my preferences. Any ideas as to what could be wrong?
    Thanks,
    John

Most likely your external DVD burner is causing a problem, disconnect it and reboot.
Try a different brand of media, handle only the edges.

  • Burned disc plays in my Mac Pro, but shows up blank on other computers

    Hi,
I edit using FCP and burn video discs using DVD Studio Pro. I've been working like this for years now. I haven't had any problems this school year until recently. What's happening is, I burn my DVD using DVD studio pro on my Mac Pro and a Lacie external disc burner. If I pop it back in the Mac Pro, it plays perfectly fine. If I then put it into my Macbook Pro (same OS and applications) it shows up as blank. It is also happening when I send DVDs to other people I work with when they put the disc in their computers.
I know the disc is burning because it shows up on the original machine and I've been able to get data off of the disc, but I want to make sure other people can view the disc.
Has anyone else experienced this and have a suggestion? Many thanks.
