Burned dvd skips
hi there - am waiting on final cut universal to arrive and am at the moment just needing to put a 5 min music video that a friend did from imovie onto DVD
have managed to burn it fine but playing on a dvd player it skips like mad although it plays fine on the imac. on 3 dvd players ive tested it it skips like crazy but on the imac it does skip but not nearly as bad - its more like a second pause
my friend used a few slow mo's etc but basically needing to find a remedy for this - imovie suggests putting quality to standard but thus far no joy.
anyone out there have any suggestions - i downloaded deinterlacer 2.7 but have no real scooby as to using it - have to say imovie is a real pain in the backside!!!!
matty
Hi matty,
welcome to this board
some dvd players don't "like" fast burned dvds and not every brand of dvd-r...
burn it again (if your Mac doesn't accept it, you have to anyhow), choose a different brand and don't use dvd-r marked "16x" or higher.....
in case you own Toast, create an .img with iDVD, use Toast to burn and set drive speed to 1x or 2x ....

Burned DVDs Skipping over damaged area
My C2D 1,83GHz Mac mini (10.5.2) has problems with burned DVD movies. Both DVD Player and VLC will crash or give an error at some point: *Skipping over damaged area*. VLC will just crash and DVD Player will hang, you can´t pause or rewind.
The movies will play just fine on a standalone DVD Player. Commercial DVDs (not copied) will work just fine also. I´ve been using Verbatim DVD-R dics and the same movies play just fine in my PowerBook G4 and my MacBook Pro. I just got a movie from a friend on a TDK disc and that disc did not cause any probelms on the mini. What could be the problem? Is there a problem with the drive? I´ve tried burning the discs on 3 different Macs but that doesn´t seem to make a difference.I can't help but wonder if this is an issue relating to whatever means has been used to burn the movies rather than the drive or the discs - particularly since commercial DVDs play properly.
It may be, for example, that the software used to rip or duplicate the originals has mis-read the original due to copy protection, and the disc is therefore not copied fully. -
Burned DVD skips frames (?) on DVD players
I recently used my EyeTV 200 to encode some video, which I then exported to iMovie, and then sent it to iDVD from iMovie. I then burned the video to a DVD using iDVD. The burned DVD plays fine on my computer, but does not play correctly on two stand-alone DVD players (one purchased several years ago and one purchased within the last year). During any significantly speedy motion in the image, the moving parts have a jerkiness to them, sort of like it is dropping frames, but there is also a sort of ghosting effect, where the person moving on-screen is seen in the current frame and last frame's position. It's very distracting, and I can't figure out how to fix it, because the file plays fine at every earlier stage in the process.
The encoding settings in EyeTV are as follows:
MPEG-2
NTSC 720x480 D1
Constant bit rate of 15.0 Mbps
GOP structure: IBP frames
Audio: 384 kbps at 48.0 kHz
The EyeTV file (8.4 GB) plays fine. Then I exported it to iMovie (which seems to be a straight conversion to DV), and it plays fine in iMovie. Then I clicked the "Create iDVD Project" button. I set up my menus, etc, in iDVD, and it plays fine there as well. iDVD is set to encode using Best Quality (the video is 1 hr. 15 min. long). I burned the project to a Maxell DVD-R 8x single-layer disc using a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D*. As I mentioned before, the resulting DVD plays fine using Apple's DVD Player software, but exhibits this weird skipping on both an old and a new stand-alone DVD player.
I have looked everywhere for some sort of preference setting to boost the quality of the rendering in iDVD (thinking that might be the problem), but the fact that the final product plays fine on the computer seems to suggest that that isn't the problem, but I don't know what else it could be. I have plenty of free space on my hard drive, and a dual-processor 1.25 GHz G4 should be plenty of horsepower to encode this thing.
Any insight into this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
*: The Pioneer DVD burner is an after-market internal drive that I bought from MCE:
http://www.mcetech.com/dvdr16xdt-d.html
which is supposed to be 100% supported by Apple software (I think it's supposed to be the same model Apple uses for their superdrives). However, System Profiler lists it as unsupported:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:
Firmware Revision: 1.06
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No
But iDVD and the Finder both recognize it without any complaint (I've also used it to burn several DVD-R discs in the Finder - with no problems).

added DVD burner information
Message was edited by: elgregoEyeTV is what produced the original file. I knew that re-compression could produce problems as I moved from EyeTV to iMovie to iDVD to burned DVD, so to avoid that as much as possible, I put the settings as high as possible - that's why the EyeTV file is an 8.4 GB file for 75 minutes of video, which is a pretty large file for that amount of video.
But like I said, there is no problem with the quality of the EyeTV file, or the iMovie file, or the iDVD file. They all play beautifully. The burned DVD plays beautifully when it is played on the computer. The only problem is when I try to play the burned DVD on a stand-alone DVD player with a TV. -
Burned DVDs skip on some Home Players
I know this is a topic that has been thrown around for some time, but is there any new info out there that can help the playback on the DVD home players that skip when you play burned DVD's (DVD-R & DVD+R). A group of us are trying to fix this problem. We have used different brands of DVD's as well.
One person suggested changing the bit Rate???
What do you know???supposedly the DVD standard says bitrates of up to 10 Mbps are allowed. in practice, standalone players don't handle this. particilarly older players have problems.
first, the bitrate is the total (video + audio + subtitles). i had a video (miniDV) which i imported into FCP4 did some minor editing and sent it off to Compressor 2.0.1. in the MPEG4 panel, if i used anything higher than 6.5 for the peak bitrate for video, the disk would not work on a playstation 2 (the audio part i used dolby and it was only stereo). same dvd worked fine on Macs, XP and an high end dvd player.
so, yeah, the solution is to make sure the bitrate doesn't exceed 6.5Mbps. it also helps to burn at a slower speed (perhaps) and to use decent media (i've been using both TDK and Fujifilm w/o problems). -
Burned DVD stops or music skips at 100th chapter
I am creating a slideshow with music in iDVD. When playing the burned dvd the music skips or the dvd stops at the 100th picture. Any fix for the problem? I noticed that iDVD automatically assigns each picture its own chapter so it could be the 100th chapter that causes the problem. If so, is there any way to have more than 1 picture per chapter?
Thanks for your help! The 99 photos was because, as the original poster indicates, each photo is a chapter and the Video DVD standard (nothing to do with Apple, but the industry standard) is 99 chapters max. These days many players will play past 99 chapters, but many others, especially older ones, the strictly conform to the DVD standard balk when there are more than 99 chapters.
So while iDVD will now allow slide shows past 99 photos, if you want your DVD to be compatible with the most set top players, you are better off limiting your slideshow to no more than 99 photos. If you want more, then you want to create your slideshow manually in iPhoto or iMovie and place your own chapter markers keeping the number of chapters under 100.

Burned dvds keep skipping when played on tv
Hi, i use toast 7 to burn movies adn dvds, lately ive been having problems with the movies that i burned on dvd because when i try to play them on my tv, the movie keep skipping or sometimes it freezes. I have used dvd - and dvd + in case that was the problem, but i still get the same result. Does anyone know the reason for this?
ThanksSome DVD players have difficulty reading DVD's burned with Toast 7, and other programs that burn DVD's. Do you have the updates installed? Are you burning via Video_TS folders?
If so try another program, such as Disco (http://www.discoapp.com/).
The more current the DVD player, the less likely that you'll have a player issue. How new is the player? -
Burned DVD's don't work, or skip in DVD player
When I create a DVD on my G5 I burn onto a DVD-R from IDVD. Often, when I give copies of the DVD's to people they report that it eitehr pixelates occassionally, or freezes up at the same point and they can not continue to watch it. Any suggestions?
It sounds like the 'usual' burn error problem.
You can try a different brand of writable media or create a disk image of your project (it's under File>Create Disk Image) and use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast Titanium 7 to burn the disk image to writable media at a lower speed (like 2x or 4x).
The problem is writing at higher speeds (or with marginal media) tends to increase the error rate of burned DVDs. Computer DVD players have a much higher error correction capability than most set-top DVD players (after all , you wouldn't want to loose computer data) and do a better job of playing writable discs. -
I've tried Windows Media Player, and Windows Movie Maker on Windows. On Mac, I've tried a few different things including Burn. For some reason i dont have iDVD. In my "About this Mac" it says that my optical drive can burn DVDs. It always goes through the process, then skips to the end and spits out the disk saying it couldnt complete the task. I dont understand why its so difficult these days when burning DVDs used to be so simple.
I thought about doing what you said above, but unfortunately, I didn't have any spare blank DVD's. However, I was able to sucessfully install Windows & on my Mac. What I did was when I got to the error message, I would cancel the installation and that would return me back to the install now window. At that point, I would take out the flash drive and put it into another USB port. It took a few times, but eventually it recognized the drivers and allowed me to install the software. Remember, once you get past that point, the installation will ask you to choose a drive to install Windows on. Highlight the Boot Camp drive and chose "advanced", and then chose "format" after that. After all of this, it should be smooth sailing.

Burning DVD files....
Can someone please answer this question.....
Which Roxio Toast app is compatible with my Macbook?
I need to be able to burn .dvd/.avi files For Later Viewing, Not For Re-Sale...
Macbook OSX 10.4.11
2GHz Intel 2 DuoHi - and what results you have using Toast? Did you ever used iDVD? I never used Toast but always iDVD, and pretty much every time I run into trouble playing burnt DVD - they skip, or freeze, stutter, etc. I tried all kinds of blank media, thinking that that could be a problem; I started to buy Verbatim with an extra protective layer; I burnt (in iDVD) the discs at 1x speed.... and - still no much of the difference - even if they play once or twice without interruption - the discs will pause, skip, or freeze, or stutter eventually...
WHAT TO DO, so the burnt DVDs will play smoothly?
Is the TOAST 9 or 10 any better at this point (than iDVD)??? -
I am burning a DVD that has 10 slideshows. Each slideshow is treated as a chapter. I have burned DVDs in the past using this method with no problems. Now, with this project I get the following.
internal software error: .\vobulator\titleplanner\cgopgrouper.cpp, line 401This error came up again (the first time i had to rebuild), and i figured out that it had to do with a clip i had in a timeline that needed trimming, and would not butt up cleanly to the preceeding clip. i am assuming that the chapter point i inserted did not fall on a GOP, and generated this error.
when i took that clip out of the timeline and put it in it's own seperate timeline, the disc burned with no problem.
hope this help someone else skip the frustration i had. -
What can do to improve the playablilty of a burned DVD?
Hi,
I have a lot of DVD-coasters laying around. I spent hours working around some iMovie bugs/features and dealt so far with iDVD 5's oddities, and learned how to create a disc image and check the QT movie for stutters/errors. I burned from Disc Utility using Verbatim DVD-R discs at low (4x) speed. I've read through much of these forums trying to fix my DVD-coaster problem. I've learned a lot, but now my family misses me and I miss them, and my DVDs are still not watchable.
My questions are then:
1. Is there any piece of the puzzle I'm missing, because my disc plays fine on my Mac but not on my stand-alone DVD player - it plays fine for about 1/3 of the movie and then skips and chokes. This means the DVD burned fine, but cannot be read well enough by the DVD player correct? (Due to whatever... I dunno.)
2. I've only have one DVD player, a few-years-old Toshiba, so I wonder on what percent of DVD players will this DVD work? Can I send a copy of this DVD to my friends who all presumably have different DVD players? Is there a list of DVD players that work better than others? Any sure things?
The other wrench in this is that a year back I burned some DVDs a similar way (using the same computer, but Staples-brand DVDs) and some worked fine and others didn't of the same project.
3. Is there any sense in taking the time to re-burn the same disc image onto the same brand disc in hopes that the magic fairies (who I now know are really in charge here) will be good to me, and I'll get a playable disc?
Thanks,
Garrett… you do all recommendations, read here on the board…
but…
my first dvd-burner war a Pioneer102 (101?), which exactly failed to burn dvds 10 days after end of 2y warrenty… it started with symptoms you're discribing: dvd plays fine on same drive, but stutter/stop after a few minutes on other, standalone players… after a few weeks, DVDs were complete unseen on external drives... then, my audioCD starts to show same symptoms…
bought a new burner - now, everything's fine....
needed to re-burn 2 projects, which I did with burner v1… -
I created a new disc image from a DVD burned in iDVD. In disk utility when I burned from previous created disc image, the last 30 minutes of the dvd skips including video and audio. I tried playing it in a few DVD players and it does the same thing. What is causing this? Could it be that our dvd burner needs cleaning?
You might want to try burning your DVD at a slower speed using DVD-R 4x or 8x media (preferably Verbatim).

Imac 27inch Burning Issues, skips, freeze, an d scratch
Has anyone had issues with the new 27inch mac burning DVDS? They burn fine, but when you play them back I get random skips and pauses. It also tends to scratch them in a similar pattern. Should I use a certain DVD brand or speed or type ie: plus or minus....thanks, this has ruined some major projects...
Brian TownI've had this problem, too. I use only high-premium media, so that's not the issue. The scratches are obvious. I found a solution, (I'd call it a "work-around"), but it looks to me like another case where Apple can cop out by saying "you're doing it wrong".
If I am ULTRA careful to insert and remove the media with ZERO lateral force ... absolutely nothing that remotely resembles bending ... then it's OK, no damage to the media. I'm talking way beyond what a manufacturer should reasonably expect of a user. Nonetheless, if you treat the disc as if it were an utterly priceless object, it seems to come out OK.
I have a duplicator, so I only have to get one specimen that's completely readable. The duplicator software creates a disc image, and the robot handles the media with great care. -
Burned dvd plays on Mac but not on player
my burned dvd plays on my Mac with no problems but on my dvd player, it just stops after 3 few seconds. any ideas what happened there?
i used iDvd 4Welcome to the Forum.
The most likely reason for consumer DVD players to skip or stop on DVDs that play well in computer DVD drives, are excessive burn errors that the consumer players 'choke on'. All burned media (CD and DVD) has burn errors. Burning at lower speeds tends to reduce the error level, hence the recommendation to burn low-speed media for maximum player compatability. Computer DVD drives have a high level of error correction (after all - you wouldn't want to loose any data on a data DVD) and can handle the errors. Consumer DVD players don't - after all they are designed to playback pressed DVDs with low error rates.
Some consumer DVD players are more sensitive to these errors than others.
Sometimes using a different brand of media will help. -
The DVD skips and half way through it goes back to the begining. The music also skips.
I am making iMovies and importing then into iDVD. I have not experianced this on my DVD player, but friends have, about 2 out of 15.
paulNote that not all players can play all DVD media.
While the manufacturers of the media try to be
compatible with all players, in practice there are
always enough variations that you will have problems
on some players.
Some very old set top DVD players may not play
writable media, but all recent players should.
Problems with writable media playing in recent
players is usually a matter of burn-errors.
Computer DVD players have a high level of error
correction and don't have problems with the errors.
Set top DVD players are usually designed for
pressed, commercial DVDs with very low errors and as
a result, will often choke on burned DVDs written at
higher speeds.
That makes sense, I have just burned using disk image. and then used disk utility, It works on my TV, well see it it does on others,
