Burned iPhoto libraries from 2002 show up as 0 photos when re-opened

I have iPhoto libraries from 2002 (and possibly other years) burned to CD's that when re-opened in iPhoto show up in the album list but show as 0 photos. Newer burned to disc libraries are available but the old ones are not. The burned photos are available on the disc by exiting iPhoto and going through all the folder prompts, so the jpeg images are there. The disc also has the data and thumbnail folders. Is there some kind of update that is needed?

If TD's suggestion is unsuccessful open the library folder and drag the Originals folder to the Desktop.
Then drag the subfolders in the Originals folder, a few at a time<  into your open iPhoto window.  That will import the original files into Events with the same names as the subfolders have.

  • Does uploading iPhoto libraries from multiple Macs with the same photos create duplicates in the new Photos app?

I have 4 Macs and I had the same iPhoto library on each of them. When I chose to turn on the iCloud Photo Library on each of them, each Mac, each one of them uploaded the library to iCloud Photo Library.. Now it appears that I have many duplicates in the new Library. Is it adding each of the 4 libraries to the mix? It's a real problem as I have 25,000 pictures - 70GB in my library. So paused the upload on 2 of the Macs about half way through in case it is creating duplicates, until I get some answers. Any help would sure be appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as well. I'm doing one mac at a time and seeing how it works. Howev the upload is so slow, who knows when it will be done.

  • Any way to restore iTunes and iPhoto libraries from failed Time Machine backup?

Is there a way to restore iTunes and iPhoto libraries from an unmountable Time Machine backup?
Background: I received an update alert on my iMac (mid-2010, 1TB) from Time Machine (wirelessly connected to a Time Capsule, 2TB 2013)  that it required an update and required rebooting, of course, it happened when I was in the middle of a project and I postponed the restart for later.  That evening I turned off the computer and coincidentally the next morning, the iMac would not start; it loaded to the Apple logo and about an 1/8 of the progress bar would load before the iMac would turn off.
The iMac had been fine to that day (OS upgrades and all since 2010) so I was assuming something misfired when I declined the Time Machine update. I tried the PRAM and SMC resets mentioned in the forums but no dice. I then went into Disk Utility to try repairs and there were errors on the hard drive that could not be fixed. My next step was to erase the drive and restore from my Time Machine backup. Before doing that I checked Disk Utility and to my horror,  it told me that my Time Machine backups were unmountable so of course my first thought was that all my files were gone.
The TC was under warranty so I called support and they referred me to the local Genius Bar. The Genius was great and showed me that my files weren't lost even though the Time Machine backup was unmountable. They recommended I erase the partitions, starting from scratch and I would have to transfer the Time Machine backup files manually by directly connecting an ethernet cable from the TC to the computer. If that didn't work, the hard drive was bad and needed replacement which they could take care of.
I followed their recommendation and the hard drive is fine. I was so relieved to hear that my files were safe that I forgot to ask about all of the metadata that was lost in iTunes (de-selected songs, playlists, rankings, play counts) and iPhoto (geotags, names, etc). Any ideas / help? I sank considerable time into my music and photos and would love to have that time back.
FWIW, I'm in the process of buying an external hard drive as a secondary backup to the TC as my confidence is a little shaken on the product line - the first time I ever actually need a backup and the backup is unmountable. My whole point of spending a little more and buying into the Apple ecosystem for a backup solution was to streamline the backup process and avoid these types of issues.

Thank you for the reply. I tried the Disk Utility to repair my TC's Time Machine backup disk with no luck, it stopped with the message:
    Disk utility stopped repairing "iMac"
Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
It took a night but I was able to copy all the TC Time Machine files to the external hard drive as a backup to a backup just in case. I'm still pretty bummed the TC's backup didn't allow for Disk Utility's restore functionality. Fortunately, the iPhoto library backup I dragged to the iMac from the Time Capsule backup worked without a hitch. On the downside, the "iTunes Library.itl" backup I dragged over is locked so now I'm checking out the forums for any ways to fix that. I temporarily created a new iTunes library with all my apps and music but plan on reverting to the old iTunes library if possible so I can start syncing my iOS devices again.

I have an iMac 2013 running OSX 10.9.4. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup user files to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMack Hard drive.
So, say I make the backup today, delete iphoto libraries from my iMac, and then backup my iMac in a week. What happens to the iphoto libraries that are on the external backup drive now that I am backing up the iMac where they no longer exist?
I will have them backed up to a separate second external drive as well.
I'm just very cautious about removing them from the hard drive.
Thanks for helping and understanding my crazy caution!

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and have to manually locate the photos, every time!!!

I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and now every time I open a library I have to manually locate the photos. After locating the first file, it works well and remembers the location of the files of all the events, even when the folders containing the actual photos are in several different locations.
The problem is that when I close and open iPhoto, it does not remember where the files were and I have to locate at least a file, all over again.
Does anyone knows if there is a way of making iPhoto "remember" or saving the location of the files?

By default, iPhoto will store its library file under ~/Pictures. To select a library manually in iPhoto:
    Ensure that iPhoto is closed.
Hold down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon in your Dock or launch it from the Applications folder.
    Click on Choose Library.
Locate and select the library you wish to use.
Close iPhoto and re-open it. Does it remember the library that you selected?
For more information on moving your iPhoto library, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229.
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • Merging iPhoto Libraries from two Macs

Does anyone have a way of physically combining (not just sharing) iPhoto libraries from two macs? I'm hoping there's an easier, smarter way of doing it than just exporting all of the photos from one and importing them into the other and then just doing the reverse. Is there software that does this smarter? Can get rid of duplicates, etc.?

    Merge?
    Do you mean 'sync' libraries
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this with automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus assoicated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.
The Export/Import route will not get your versions.

What does iTunes have to do with this?   Also more specific information might be helpful.

Where are you being asked to select a library?  What kind of library, iPhoto or iTunes?

Hi, I have this green mark (with pointing arrow looks like a link) on some words show on my window screen when I open a web page, I wonder if it is a virus link or such. Need help how to get rid of it. Here's the example:
    WING
    GAMES
    MAJORITY
    Thanks

If the third link you posted (the link containing the word "majority") does not look like the following then you inadvertently installed adware.
That particular page should resemble the following:
The word "majority" in the third paragraph should not be a link and should not have the green icon associated with it.
To learn how this may have occurred, and how to prevent it from occurring in the future, read How to install adware
Most so-called "news" websites are nothing more than entertainment outlets that cater to prurient interests, and contain advertisements that leave the user about three clicks away from installing junk. If you decide to frequent those websites, Safari's "Reader" feature helps minimize that exposure.
    Try it:

  • IPhoto keeps asking me to import 2 lost photos everytime I open it

iPhoto keeps asking me to import 2 lost photos everytime I open it,
allowing me to choose yes/no, yes - save to a new recovery, no - save in a flie directory
and in which the two photos are gone ages ago,
it's causing me so much troubles.
    What can I do?

quit iPhoto and go to your iPhoto library and right click (control click) on it and select "show package contents" - look through it and find the folder named import (or importing) and drag it to the desktop - make NO other changes of any sort
Close that and launch iPhoto - you will be fine - you can then trash the import(ing) folder form the desktop (or open it to be sure it has no photos you want in it)

  • How to unify multiple iPhoto libraries from different Mac OS versions?

    I am pretty good with the Mac itself and have been a long time user. I knew full well acumulating multiple iphoto libraries in older backups (intead of building up on one) was not a great idea but for several reasons I have had to live that way. Now is the time to clean it all up once and for all and I need some wisdom;
-I got my external drive as my new iphoto library now. It's being used, there are already albums in it and it's ready to accept older libraries.
-What I want is that the older libraries (about 10 of them from different Mac OS versions) to show up in the new external drive as they looked in iphot back then. As albums in other words.
-I do not want them imported in a single folder that's full of photos.
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Cheers.
    M

If you imported a previous iphoto library into your new one, it created a folder inside the iphoto called "imported".
That was the problem. One should never import one library into another.  Only iPhoto 6 libraries and earlier can be imported into a library now.  With the introduction of iPhoto 7 the library was changed from a folder to a package which can't be imported by the current iPhoto version.
To use an older library with a new iPhoto version one just opens that library with iPhoto and lets iPhoto update it as necessary.  No importing necessary.
Also you can use the paid verson of  iPhoto Library Manager  to merge those additional libraries into your current working library (be sure to have a current backup of your current library before merging).  What will be included are albums, Events, keywords, titles, descriptions, places.  Books, slideshows, calendars in the other libraries will be copied over as just albums.

  • An iPhoto legacy from 2002?

    Hi all,
I've got a new Mac Pro (woo hoo) and am sorting out stuff on my old one which is changing hands. My iPhoto pictures are all, I presume, in the Pictures folder, in a single file called iPhoto Library. I assume it's a file, because when I click on it all I get is the iPhoto icon, no other folders and Preview telling me the file is 29.85GB in size. Sitting alongside that file are seven AVIs which are also on iPhoto, although these seven are by no means all the AVIs.
Can anyone confirm that this folder structure for iPhoto and Pictures is correct? I don't want to lose anything.
What worries me is that my Username > Library folder, I've noticed another folder called iPhoto Library containing a few thumbnails from 2002. An identical folder also resides in my Documents folder.
The identical folders both contain the following folders:
    2002
    2004
    Albums
    iPhoto Library
Also in the folders are the following files:
    AlbumData.xml
    Dir.data
    Library.data
Is it safe for me to delete this stuff? I'm in a tidy mood and want to get rid of any detritus sitting around.
The thumbnails from 2002 don't show up in iPhoto. I think the original photos are in an OS9 archive. (I upgraded to OSX in 2004 and can't remember whether I used iPhoto before then on OS9 or if it even existed for OS9.)
But I'm not sure about the significance of the file called AlbumData.xml - there is no similarly named file in my Pictures folder and I'm concerned that it might control the library for iPhoto's real contents.
I'd be really grateful if anyone can shed any light on this for me.
    Best wishes,
    Bristly

Given that you’ve just got a new Mac my guess is that you’re using iPhoto 08 (you’re posting in the v6 forum).
This is confirmed by the following:
in the Pictures folder, in a single file called iPhoto Library.
It’s not really a File btw. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside? Right click on it and select ‘Show Package Contents’ from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open with then Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
From your description of the other Folders in User/Library and User/Documents, they look like leftovers from an even earlier upgrade of iPhoto. If there are no full sized photos in them then yes, you can trash them that you want, then yes you can trash them. If there are some full-sized pics in there you want, drag them to the iPhoto Window and they’ll be imported. Then trash the flotsam and jetsam.
You never used iPhoto in OS 9.
The AlbumData.xml file is the file other apps read when they integrate with iPhoto. If that one you’ve found is outside the iPhoto Library package, then you can trash it as well.
    Regards

  • IPhoto on Mac not showing photostream. My photos from iPhone were not on my Mac, I tried to import using cable. Now the photos show in iCloud only.  It seems frozen. On trying to close iPhoto down got message that photos being imported. 6 hours ago

I have IMac on Yosemeite, 500GB. IPhone 5 on 8.2. My photos, from iPhone, had not appeared via photo stream on my Mac. I had been away from a while But expected the photos to appear on the Mac. There were 1000 in Photostream and 1200 in Camera Roll. I used a cable to import the Camera Roll, it stopped importing after 1000 photos. The photos, though, are in iCloud and I don't know how to access them to put them to Events. There are 3 recent Photostream events showing up in IPhoto withOut any photos. I tried to import to Library but was directed to Finder and no access to iPhoto. I tried to shut down iPhoto but got a message telling me photos were being imported. That's 6 hours ago and I'm still getting the same message. I don't know what to do. I'm not an expert, just a user.

HHi, thank you for the reply. I have checked my iPad and iPhone and neither has iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled. Turned off in both. Photostream is turned on.
i tried to sort it out  by dragging all the photos to Events on the Mac and then deleting them from iCloud - (left hand side of iPhoto under the section 'Shared'). the photos now show up in Events. I did force quit but the issue remains. The message reads ' photos are bing imported to the library. Please wait for import to complete.'
i can't empty iPhoto trash either. The message read "Delete error. Please wait for import to complete.'
WHen I was moving the photos to the Events I always had a message about duplicates - to the effect that the photos already existed, did I want to import them? I clicked on Yes, import all duplicates. But when it showed the images - duplicates side by side - one showed the photo and the other was blank.
I really don't know what to do! And I don't know how to handle my iOS devices. Is it to do with the large number of photos? Any help, advice appreciated.
