Burned Many DVD's, Some Work, Ohers Don't

I have made two iMovie/iDVD projects recently on two different computers. The first one was burned on a PowerMac G5 and when I burned it using iDVD, the first copy worked great on the PowerMac G5 DVD player, but when it was played on a DVD player, the audio and video tracks would go out of sync. When I paused the video, it would go back into sync. One of them had the audio at one point make this loud static noise for the rest of the video. I tried five other DVD players and two had the same results. The other three had the DVD work perfectly. The first DVD player and the two that didn't work well were various models from new to old (One of them was brand new). The other three that worked was one from 1999, 2004, and an XBOX. I tried it on an iMac G5 and it didn't work there. I tried it on another PowerMac G5 as well as a PowerBook G4 and PowerMac G4 and it worked. I also repeatedly tried it on the same computers and DVD players again and I had the same results.
I deleted the encoded assets and made another burn. I still had random problems on different DVD players and Macintoshes. I tried everything from rebuilding the project to using different DVD media. I made like over 20 burns and yet I got the same problems, yet they were in different places in the video and worked on some players and didn't work on others, even when one burn would work on one player, sometimes the next burn wouldn't, and vice versa.
The problem is that the DVD won't play well where I need to show it. Every DVD player and Macintosh computer they have, besides the PowerMac G5, can't play the movie properly. In the past, I had made videos on the same computer and played it on these DVD players and computers and they worked perfectly. At my house, it plays perfectly on everything (PowerMac G5, PowerMac G4, PowerBook G4, XBOX, and three other DVD players) except one burn that couldn't work on my PowerMac G5 (It would stall at the same point and freeze the DVD player).
Still having problems, I decided to do my next project on the iMac G5. After burning, I still had the same problem. This time, it would work perfectly on a PowerMac G5, a DVD player at my house, and the iMac G5. However, the quality was even worse (Audio became a large static noise at one point during the video) and the DVD menus would pixelate and the audio would skip.
I tried so many different burns doing everything that I could. I tried DVDs from Memorex, TDK, and Apple. Of all the burns I did, I got one good burn that would work on the DVD player I needed to show it on, but yet, that burn couldn't play on other DVD players and some Macintosh computers. For that burn, I was using a Memorex DVD. The worst burns were using Memorex and Apple DVDs. To me, all these problems with the burns were very random.
The first project I did consisted of photos from iPhoto, VHS tape footage, and titles all cued to music. The 2nd video consisted of video shot from a Canon GL1 digital video camera with titles and Motion files (QuickTime) all with music.
I did projects on both these computers before without any software upgrades and had successful burns. I even used the same DVD media and camera.
So, if there is anyone out there that could help me figure out how to fix this annoying problem, that would be great.

Hi, Bredgur,
Sorry for your problems. It sounds like a problem with your media.
I tried DVDs from Memorex, TDK, and Apple.
Try Verbatim DVD-R. That brand is very reliable and seems to work on most DVD players. Some players give difficulty. My Toshiba randomly won't play some audio clips. My Sony reliably plays everything.

Assuming you have Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks, restart and hold the Command and R keys.  When the reboot has completed, click Utilities on the menu bar if the utilities window has not automatically opened.  Click Terminal.  When the Terminal window has opened, type exactly the following:
    resetpassword
    and press Enter.
When the Reset Password Window opens, select the internal storage, the user, and type a new password twice.  Do not enter a hint.  Click Save.
Accept the next window that opens, and back at the Reset Password window click the lower right button to accept the reset of the user's home directory permissions.
Click the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart and you will now have a new password.

  • Has anyone had the iMac erase all files in a folder when burning a dvd of some of the file.  All that remain are the files that I burned.

I had a folder that contained picture, both raw and jpgs from a trip that I had taken.  I wanted to burn a dvd of the folder that had 9 subfolders in it.  I got a message that it was too large.  I told it what directory I wanted and it created the dvd.  I when to get some additional files and all of my pictures, under each of the subfolders are gone.  The only thing that is under the subfolders is the directory that I burned to dvd.  Has anyone else had this problem?  If so were you able to recover the pictures?  I do have the backed up but am currently out of town and will not be back for a month.
    Thanks
    Mike Booher

    First Welcome to the Discussions.
Depending on the Burning Software are you using. IF you drag the folder with the sub folders in the original folder if it is to large it will not burn it.
Your best option is to seperate the Original Folder in 1/2 and then try to burn it on 2 seperate DVD's this way you would meet the size critera for the software.
If you had good burning Software and were able to use dual layer it probably would have burned the entire folder and it would have fit.
If you continue to have issues after I have explained it to you come back and someone will help you.
Just remember that Apples burning Software is entry level and doesn't  have the functions of the top of the line in burning Software, Like Roxio, or DVD FAB, these 2 give you so many more options.

  • Burn data dvd no longer works since 9.0.1 or 9.0

Since the latest iTunes update, at least 9.0 or 9.0.1, I am unable to burn backup DVD data disks which is my "offsite" backup method besides using Time Machine on an accessory drive. The DVD drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109: Firmware Revision: 1.58. I get error messages, did not save the text, but usually read/write errors, "sense" issues usually cited after several attempts. However, seems to work fine burning from Toast and fine for burning iTunes Audio CDRW disks. Anyone else experience this? I see several having problems recently burning CD's from iTunes, but not this specific issue. I know it's nearly time to update my system to Intel, but it would be nice to hold on a little longer...I did try to force lower speed DVD writes with no help. Thanks...

  • Need to re-burn a DVD, but some source files are missing. But Media Cache folder has them all.

hi all. I have PE3 and the issue is this: I needed a DVD of a project I'd completed a year ago, and I didn't have an old copy of the DVD. So I decided to re-burn it. But on opening the project, it seems some of the source files have been misplaced on my computer, so it says 'media offline'.
I figured I'd still be able to burn it though, because the Media Cache folder contained all the required files...
However it starts to burn the DVD and then stops at 49% saying transcoding error.
Q1: can you still burn a DVD if it says 'media offline' but you know all the source files are present in the Media Cache folder?
    Q2: what's the transcoding error?
    thx

The Media Cache folder contains files that are only of use to PE during internal editing and will NOT solve your lost video problem.
Once a Project is completed, that have no outside value.
The contents are CFA and PEK files, which is the Conformed Audio and Waveform Display, respectively (no video here to my knowledge).
And I'm not aware of any way to make them useful (outside of PE).
If you happen to have your Project and source video/audio files intact, and then delete the contents of the Media Cache folder, upon re-opening the Project, PE will regenerate the CFA and PEK files. Again this is only if you have the Project and all the source files (Assets)...

  • Playing Burned DVD's  - some work, some stop and pixelate

I created my first DVD project with Final Cut Pro and finished it in DVD Studio Pro. I played it on my 2004 Panasonic DVD player without a problem, but when I sent it to family and friends many of them said there was chatter and sometimes it hung up and would not play right. I am trying to figure out if there is a specific DVD to use or is it formatting (DVD-R, or DVD+R) or are there settings I am missing in DVD Studio Pro that I should be using?

    Hi Setla,
And welcome to the forum. If it looks fine on your set top box and you used the same media as the disks you sent to your friends. Then I would drop the encoding bit rate and / or convert your audio to dolby (if thats applicable). Compressor checks for a maximum bit rate on build but that doesn't necessarily mean all players will be able to handle this (stacks of variables). My first choice would be to convert the audio and then if need be attack the video.
When making DVD's I would also recommend using something like Toast as this will go through a verify cycle which should rule out any dodgy media or writes.
    Enjoy.

  • Suddenly today some entries on my pc icloud calendar can't be accessed/edited - they just won't open. Some work, others don't. (All OK if l try to do it on iphone/ipad) All worked fine till today

I find today when I open my icloud calendar on my PC that I cannot access/edit some of the entries - some are fine, others just won't open. If I click on them, they open a 'new entry' box, but will not give me access to the original entry.
If I go to my iphone or ipad, I can access them all fine.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled icloud on my PC, but still the same thing happens.
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • Burning a dvd

I copied a VHS tape onto a DVD+R disc. Now I want to make an additional copy of the DVD disc I made from the vhs tape. Can someone please tell me if I use Imovie or Idvd to produce it?
    Thanks(I'm very new at this)

Now I want to make an additional copy of the DVD disc I made from the vhs tape. Can someone please tell me if I use Imovie or Idvd to produce it?
iMovie does not "burn" DVDs so if your iDVD project has already been erased, your would have to go through the entire process of sending/opening your iMovie project in iDVD to re-create a DVD burn. If you still have the iDVD project, you can burn another DVD by simply pressing the "Burn" button. The mount of time the burn takes will depend on whether or not you have made an major changes to the project, whether these changes have already been re-encoded in the background, and/or how extensive/compext your menu is and how difficult it is to re-encode. If you previously created/saved an "Image" of your iDVD DVD, then you need only burn this image as many times as needed.
If you have a copy of the previously burned DVD available and other applications like Toast, then you can "copy-burn" your "original" DVD directly or burn a copy from the VIDEO_TS folder contained on the DVD. Another option would be to to drop your VIDEO_TS folder icon or DVD icon to a free utility like DVD Imager which can automatically create an image file from either source that can then be burned using Toast or Apple's Disk Utility application in your "Applications > Utilities" folder.
If you don't have any third-party applications, you can manually perform the same work flow entirely from within the Apple "Disk Utility" application. In this case,
    1) Open the Disk Utility application
    2) Press the New Image icon button
    3) When the new window opens,
... a) Enter a "Save As:" name for the image file to be stored on your hard drive
... b) Enter a "Volume Name:" which is the name of your DVD
... c) Select an appropriate "Volume Size:" (e.g., 4.7 GB DVD option)
    4) Wait for the image file to be created on your hard drive and then mounted
    5) When the image file is mounted, open its window and "drag 'n drop" the AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS, and any other extraneous folders present to the Image file.
    6) Once all files are copied to the Image file, return to Disk Utility and select the Image (".dmg") file in the list
    7) With the Image file selected, press the "Burn" icon button and follow instructions for burning your DVD.
This work flow is generic and should work with any OS X Mac having the Disk Utility application which has been around for some time. Its advantage is that the image file you create can be used more or less like a "virtual DVD-RW" disk on your hard drive. If left on your drive, you can burn additional copies of the image any time you want and/or, depending on its location, it can be mounted and played back in applications like the Apple DVD Player or Front Row. Since the data is stored on your hard drive, it eliminates the need for two optical drives or the continuous switching of discs for copying DVDs using certain older DVD copy applications. When no longer needed, it can be deleted entirely, or its contents can be removed and the image file re-used in much the same way as any re-writable optical disc. The disadvantage is that it takes up space on your hard drive. Basically it is a trade off between convenience in your ability to access content and the space required to store it.

  • Problems burning a dvd backup in Mac OS X tiger

hi I have some problems to burn a dvd in my mac, when its burning the dvd for some reason the system reboots I'm trying burning with the finder and the computer its a G5 have an OS X tiger 10.4.11 running in an Intel processor box, with two user accounts, the admin and an other one who's have no admin permission I m login into this account when I tried to burn the dvd I dont know if the permission have something about because with the admin account it works great
so thats my problem if you have an Idea please help me guys
    thanks for your time

it's a DVD+R media disc. In Finder I can see the
files on the disc, there's a folder Audio_TS and
VIdeo_TS. There's .VOB, .IFO, .BUP files in the
Video_TS folder and there are no files in the
    Audio_TS folder.
The folders and files sound correct (the Audio_TS folder should be empty).
Try launching Apple's DVD Player application in the Application Folder. It should give you the option to open a DVD (I think that's what the new version of Player says - the old version used to say to open the VIDEO_TS Folder)

  • Idvd 08  shuts down after building, idvd will not burn a dvd

Dvd studio pro burns fine, Burning a DVD data disk works fine. Burning a project in Idvd 08 will not burn anything. It simply quits before finishing and spits out an empty dvd disk. I have a imac g5 power pc 2.1 ghz, 500gb hd, 2.5 gb ram and I am running idvd 08 version 7.0. I have tried reinstalling idvd and have even repaired permissions. What do I do? What could it be?

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • *Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb*
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides. Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets

  • SWF burn to DVD?

I have finally finished my school project and all I need to do is put it on a CD..
Now... how do I do I that?!
I researched online that I have to convert the swf file into mpeg4 etc to be able to burn on DVD... that does not work at all, when I open the mpeg4 it just plays my swf file like a movie clip -_-"
My swf file is meant to be a product like a tourist guide, involves clicking etc... and if it does involve converting into some sort of file what do I do with the SkinUnderPlayStopSeekMuteVol1 which is the skin for my video...
    Help guys pleaseeeeeeee!

Your title says "DVD" while your post says "CD"
There is a world of difference.
While you can burn data files unto a DVD, just like you can on a CD... if you expect to be able to play the DVD in a DVD player, then you will need to "author" the DVD... with your file ending up as a VOB file.
What I'm wondering is why you would want to convert your video player .swf file into a video format....
You have a skin for your video player... so I'm assuming you are just playing a video with the .swf... is that correct?
Well the .swf is not the video... the .flv file is the video... A .flv file is a container file which can contain both a video and/or audio file inside. So if your goal is to end up with a DVD of the video, why not break open the .flv  container, take out your video and audio and use Windows Movie maker or some other Video editing program to render and burn the DVD? some of those programs can import .flv files directly... for those that can't, use FLV Extract to break open the .flv file:

The recording device reported the media error: L-EC uncorrectable error (0x11, 0x05).
I have burned many dvds with this computer and program and all of a sudden I'm getting this message. What does this mean? I need to get this dvd burned for a client and I'm stuck. Please help. Thank you.

Possibly an issue with your optical drive.
    Are you still under warranty?
    Have you tried other media?
    Have you tried slower speeds?

  • Burned Apple DVDs don't launch anymore

    Hello,
    I'm french and working on a PowerPC G4 2x1Ghz under 10.4.11.
I'm burning archives since 5 years and bought especially apple DVDs to be sure of quality (seems to have been a mistake !). Most of them don't launch anymore when i put them in th computer. Some come up on the desk but impossible to open the Stuff-it files !
CDs and other DVDs are working fine.
What is the problem? Is it the quality of the apple DVDs? Can I recover these archives in some other way ?
    Thanks for the help…

I see you are using the original DVD drive that came with the computer. Many users of the 104 generation drives are finding these drives are starting to fail and are switching to newer drives like the Pioneer 112 and 115 drives. DVDs are pretty demanding on a drive's ability. My old 104 drive refused to read DVDs and some CDs. I bought a new 112 and it does everything with no problem. At least in the US replacement drives are very inexpensive ($30) so I would suggest you try that.
It could also be something like dirt in the drive, but the cleaning disks cost $10+ which is a good percentage of a new drive!
If you can try your DVDs in a computer with a new drive and it will read them you will know that it is your drive.
