Burning 130 min onto DVD

Hello, I have a movie that I made that is 130 minutes. I am unable to burn this using i dvd unless i choose a lower quality. Does anyone have other options that would keep the picture quality integrity.
I thought that I might have to break the movie into two sections and burn two dvds, or edit 10 minutes out to fit it onto one dvd. Any ideas. Thank you.

It would be very nice if iDVD could use compressed audio like AC3 (or M1A) instead of using uncompressed PCM. In long DVDs the PCM audio starves video the bandwidth it really needs. For example:
With 120 minutes the 1536 kb/s PCM audio takes a whopping 1.3 GB of the DVD and leaves only an average of about 3452 kb/s for the video.
A good quality compressed 384 kb/s AC3 audio would take only 0.3 GB/120 minutes leaving about 4604 kb/s for the video (192 kb/s AC3 audio would leave about 4796 kb/s for the video -- not a very big difference compared to 384 kb/s audio).
So even with good quality compressed audio, there would be considerably more bandwidth available for the video with long DVDs.
I don't know why iDVD uses bloated PCM. Maybe it is less demanding to simply use noncompressed audio (iDVD 5 seems to sometimes have trouble even with that Or maybe there are licensing issues.
BTW, the following handy formula calculates the average video bitrate to use to fill up a DVD disc based on the selected audio bitrate:
Video Rate [in bps] = (598566666 / Time [in minutes]) - Audio Rate [in bps]
For example:
(598566666 / 120 [in minutes]) - 1536000 [in bps] = 3452055 b/s = 3452 kb/s

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks

It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.
    OR
Your Superdrive may need a clean.
If you have further questions please state what Mac, with what versions of OS X, iMovie and iDVD you are using.

  • Burn keynote prensentation onto DVD to play on DVD player

I have created a slide show in Keynote and I want to burn it onto a DVD to play in a DVD player. I exported to quicktime and created a version there. It has a .m4v extension when completed. Then I burned that to the DVD disc. It won't play in a DVD player. I tried changing the extension to .mv4 and .mov but it till won't play. This is getting expensive.  I need this in 2 days. I have researched the web and followed every advice I could find. I cannot afford to buy more software such as toast, to make this work.

It has a .m4v extension when completed. Then I burned that to the DVD disc.
That is not how you make a DVD Video.
This is the workflow you need to use:
Export a Quicktime Prores file from Keynote using custom settings
Use a DVD authoring application to create a DVD Video: examples are iDVD;  no longer available from Apple but Amazon and ebay have it available, or try the free test of isky DVD Creator.

  • How do I burn my videos onto dvd

I tried burning a video playlist onto DVD afterwards I tried playing it but the files could not be read. Please Help!

Movies and TV Shows purchased from iTunes Store cannot be burned to DVD in a format readable by traditional DVD Players. you are only able to burn them as data, readable by other iTunes capable computers.

  • How do I burn iTunes library onto DVD-RW? I'm a schmuck.

Tab: Advanced/Burn only says data - CD; Why can't I burn it as a Audio DVD. I checked help. I got Itunes 6, Sonic ain't working. Neither is Windows Media player. I don't get it. I created playlist, went back to main library, selected all, then back to playlist, and pasted, then burn; I don't know, I'm a schmuck. Nothing can work for me. Like I'm a 3 year old, step 1, 2, 3, how do I do this please? Ask me whatever ya want regarding this, to ensure this can even be done, but please, someone kindly help me? I'm using a (period) > "Staples" DVD-RW, says up to 4x, what am I doing wrong or am I that much of a *******? My email is [email protected] Thank you in advance. My iTunes library is: (367) songs, and 1.53GB. Take care.

Currently, you can not burn purchased videos to a "Playable" DVD. You CAN burn them to a Data DVD for backup, but there not playable.
If you look at the "Terms of service" agreement, it states in section 9 under Usage rules.....
"You shall be entitled to export, burn (if applicable) or copy Products solely for personal, noncommercial use. You shall not be entitled to burn Video Products."
    http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/service.html
I know, this does suck, I myself wish I could burn the videos I buy to a DVD to play on the TV. Its just currently Hollywood wants there content very well protected, and currently theres no way to burn it to a DVD and have its protection carry over onto the burned DVD.

  • How do i copy/burn my library onto dvd/cd?

Hi i am quite a computer novice so please speak in none technical terms. I would like to back up my itunes library onto a dvd or even several audio cds. My library is only 4GB and i had tried:
    1. to copy library into playlist and then use the icon to burn to data dvd. It went through all my songs but said the disk was blank at the end.
    2. Copy my library to several audio cds. Each cd holds approx 700MB therefore i pressumed that it would take 4 discs. However only a few songs copy onto the disc at a time.
Is it something simple that i am not doing.
Any help on both senarios would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    hi Jonathan!
hmmm. not precisely focussed on your specific question, but here is a good general resource on backing up:

  • Burning uploaded video onto DVD

Sorry to be a dolt... Using a fancy cable from my Sony Handycam, I have uploaded a few hours of home video onto my MacBook Pro and have been looking through it in iMovie. But I can't seem to locate the function that stitches together various pieces and then burns them onto a recordable DVD. Just not finding this in the iMovie menu options properly. What I need is probably a basic iMovie functionality tutorial, but maybe a quick answer will point the way.
I also paid for Apple's Final Cut Express app when I bought the MacBook in 2008, thinking I would eventually do some more advanced video editing, and it's on the machine but I haven't even looked at it yet. Final Cut is more than I need at this stage and if I can't even manage the most basic aspects of iMovie, well..
    thanks, Will

    Hi Will
In iMovie, you essentially need to start a new project, and then drag your event clips into it. There are some pretty good tutorials on the iLife site - for iMovie...
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie
(The first tutorial shows you how to add events to a project.)
...and iDVD, which you would use to create a DVD.

Post back if you have more specific problems!

I'm trying to burn some photos onto dvd, but it marks all the files 'created date' and 'modified date' as today, rather than keeping the original date and time that the picture was taken. Is there a way around this?

Looks like that error is associated with bad or incompatible media. See this thread:

Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.

  • How to burn full hd clips onto dvd-r with Blu-ray burner to playback on a set top Blu-ray player?

    hello,
Blu-ray media is still expensive for exporting of small HD projects.
    If i have a Blu-ray burner,
can i burn BD exports onto DVD-r's (4.7Gb)
and play them in a set top Blu-ray player?
aka:  Does a DVD-r accept a 'blue laser'?
(Menus at this point are not necessary)
Mostly i am wanting to burn 3-4 minute music videos onto DVD-r discs
in full HD Blu-ray without having to use an expensive Blu-ray disc each time.
    thanks

    hello,
at this time the answer is yes
they are called BD5 and BD9 discs
the BD5 is a single layer DVD-r disc that holds BDMV
the BD9 is a dual layer DVD-r disc that holds BDMV
now i'm trying to see if Encore CS5 burns BD5/BD9 discs?
    thanks,

  • I was using Live Quartz on my MBP to stamp name/date on photos... those photos onto DVDs or USBs for trade magazines to use

the end result was I would have one photo of a cow labeled  right next to the same photo unlabeled for a catalogue. I'd burn those photos onto DVDs or USBs for trade magazines to use in their publications. Now all of the sudden I can't do it.  Sent an email to LiveQuartz but haven't heard back.   What's another simple way I can do this-- one or two steps max?  Already tried Preview, but it won't keep the duplicate --- it annotates the original .

Check the LiveQuartz support forums - http://livequartz.7.forumer.com/.

  • Can I burn to mini-DVD disc

Can I burn to mini-DVD discs on my iBook G4? I have a superdrive and I have burned the project succesfully on a regular DVD but the person that I am burning it for was told it had to be turned in on a mini-DVD.
Not knowing if the mini would be compatiable or possibly get stuck I was afraid to try it without some comformation that it has been done by someone else before. It is a work computer.
I tried to burn it on my sons PC and on my Mom's PC but neither worked. Neither acknowledges the mini-DVD.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Amber,
as Scalz wrote, never put non-standard-sized/shaped disks into slot-in drives...!!
    besides....
    miniDVD can have two meanings:
    * these %$§*? DVDcamcorders record on miniDVD (small diameter, but mainly DVD)
    * and you are able to burn a DVDcontent (muxxed mp2 stream) onto a CD-R - that is also called miniDVD.... I was able to fit 10min onto such, but my DVDstandalone doesn't accept such disks....
my guess, the recipient of your project tries to use his DVDcamcorder as a DVDplayer.... wow....... you get "grown up" DVDplayers for 39$.....
many external burners accept these miniDVD-r... maybe, someone can borrow you such? and, my guess, iDVD doesn't accept them, you need to use Toast (as I did for my dvd-cd-r experiment)
