Burning 4.7GB DVD+R on "Older" mac drive?

I have a G4 tower with a DVD burner. Recently it started spitting out any new DVD+R I put in it and couldn't read or write to it. I looked on the Apple site and found a footnote that says "older" drives can't handle the 4.7 GB disks. Is there any way around this or another program I can use to burn from iDVD now? I cant seem to find any blank DVD's that aren't 4.7GB anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Yes, a very definite difference. Most DVD Players out there support DVD-R. A very few only support DVD+R, and only the most modern players and burners support playback and burning to DVD+R. First for finding out what your burner can do, see this article:

  • Can't burn Dual Layer DVD-R on new Mac Pro?

Can't burn Dual Layer DVD-R on new Mac Pro?
I have a new Mac Pro with Pioneer DVD burner built in. I've since found out that it only burns Dual Layer +R type, and not the -R type.
My replication company need a Dual Layer -R type DVD as they can't get a glass-master off the +R type Dual Layer discs.
Can anyone recommend/suggest a cheap way of being able to either master off a DVD to Dual Layer -R disc, or perhaps copy my Dual Layer +R to a Dual Layer -R ?
    Thanks guys.

Everything I have ever read about the DVD-R DL discs says the layer break can't be chosen by the author. It is not a DVDSP issue; it is an issue with the media.
This is actually listed in the DVDSP 4.1 Late Breaking News on page 15:
    "Using DVD-R Dual-Layer Media
If your system contains a DVD drive that can write to the new DVD-R dual-layer media, you can burn your DVD project to it with DVD Studio Pro. However, there are several issues:
Since there is no current way for DVD Studio Pro to identify DVD-R dual-layer media as having two layers, burning a dual-layer project to it results in a warning appearing telling you that the DVD media may have insufficient room to hold the project. This message is based on the assumption that the disc is single layer. Both layers of the disc will be written to as needed, however, when you click Continue.
If you are burning a dual-layer project, the break point you set will not affect where the layer break actually occurs. Instead, the first layer is written to until filled, at which point the drive switches to writing to the second layer.
The switch between layers is a seamless layer change not supported by some DVD players, which may stop playing the disc when the switch point is reached.
Important: Do not use DVD-R dual-layer media unless these issues do not impact your project.
You can use DVD+R double-layer media for burning your dual-layer projects. With DVD+R double-layer media, DVD Studio Pro places the layer break point and sets the switch point to be nonseamless as specified in your project."
Can you tell us what drive you have and what firmware (revision) it is?

  • How can I "burn" a music DVD on my I-Mac?

How can I burn a music DVD on my I-Mac to play in my auto DVD/CD player?

I answered your question in your other thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20118368#20118368
There is no way to do it in iTunes that I know of - you can only burn CDs there. You do need other software to burn to a music DVD.

  • What can I do to correct this error: The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  The drive works fine when I burn a CD using Media Player.

What can I do to correct this error: The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes.  I have reinstalled several times but it hasn't changed this error message.  Why am I able to burn a CD using Media Player but not iTunes?  I am using Windows XP and I have burned cds from iTunes in the past.

1: Follow this support doc to completly remove iTunes (your files remain)

2: Download, install and run the Registry cleaner portion of the free Ccleaner

  • Pages Converter (for older Mac files)

    Hi all.
I have a fairly new iMac that I bought last July.  I have been using Macs for years.  When iWork downloaded with Maverics I deleted iWork 09 from my HD.  I now try to open Pages files and they say I need to re-open them with iWork 09 and save them again.  Also I can not open any of the older Claris Works / Apple Works files from my University days.  Loosing alll these files due to an update that is incompatible is unacceptable.  I still have the iWork 09 key form the disks I bought, but like I said, I have a newer iMac so no CD/DVD drive.  Can anyone help?
    Cheers

Pages '08 files need to be opened by Pages '09, or exported to Word .doc/docx files.
Are you sure you don't still have your older versions in your Applications/iWork folder?
LibreOffice (free) will open a lot of oldeer files.
Be warned that Pages 5 is very buggy and shy 100 features.
External CD/DVD/BluRay drives are cheap from eBay, or you can open the DVD on an older Mac and make it a .dmg file in DiskUtility, then install that from a USB stick.

There is no really satisfactory substitute for iDVD to burn video files from iMovie.
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.

  • Hello ! I wish to burn on a DVD a video that exceeds 4,7 GO. So iI can't.What should I do ? I work on iMovie 11 with a Mac OS 10 /10.6.8 thanks !

    Hello !
I wish to burn on a DVD a video that exceeds 4,7GO, but it doesn't work. The burning on iDVD ends with a failure notice. What should I do ? Thank you for helping
    Bernard

VisualHub can burn a file on a DVD that is over 4.7GB.  It can be found in the wild for free.  Do a Google search.  If you cannot find it use Video Monkey who took the place of Visual Hub.

  • Can I burn photos onto a DVD/CD for non-Mac users?

Can I burn photos onto a DVD/CD for non-Mac users?

You can burn a plain CD/DVD by just dragging the photos there; but, that may or may not be playable by everyone. To be sure that the result would be playable in any computer or CD/DVD player, it would be better to use either one of the apps already on your system - such as iPhoto. I don't use that myself - I use other third party software - but take a look at iPhoto help. And, you could make it more interesting by creating a slideshow - also in iPhoto, or iMovie. To give it the final cool touch, bring it into iDVD to give it a polished look if you'd like. You can burn it then from any of the above.
If you happen to have Toast (an excellent burning app), you could use that as well (that is my preferred way to work). In Toast, you have multiple choices: burn a data CD/DVD for Mac only, for Mac & PC, etc, burn a picture CD, video DVD, etc, etc.

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • On my Mac, I am working with IMovie and trying to burn to a dvd and get error message 2135?  Never got this before.  What is it?  Thanks

Using IMovie, I get error 2135 when trying to burn to a DVD.  Actually, it is during the preparation stage.   Never got this before  Whats the problem?  Thanks

    Hi
    You must tell more
    • Error 2125 - I recognize - but -2135 is new to me
The other is in regard to Movie Length in TIME + MENU time - as this is the limiting factor in iDVD (not GBs or other just time)
    a. How many movies
    b. duration of each movie
    c. Menu selected
    d. Is MENU still and silent - or animating and with audio (Takes lot's of the movie time)
    e. Encoding quality selected in iDVD
    f. HOW did You go from iMovie to iDVD
    g. What version of iMovie and iDVD are You using
    h. FREE Space on Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk - HOW MUCH
As You see there are lot's of info needed to be of any relevant help
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.

What external DVD burner can I use on my older IMAC using OS10.4.11? I am working on a IMovie project using I movie 6? and I want to finish this before purchasing my new computer. Thanks, Dr. Steve

unless you have one of the latest models of an imac g4 with usb 2.0 i would suggest a firewire burner instead. they're a little harder to find but they're still out there.

The last one is why I think I cannot open it. I have never had a PC but I know that .exe is a Windows thing.
Is there a way I can burn/convert this DVD to run it on my Mac?
    Thanks.

    thanks for the help guys.
After reading the posts, I did a little work-around:
    Installed Shockwave on Safari.
Copied the DVD to my computer.
Opened the .dxr files one by one on my Mac.
So that let me see the files at least.
Now I am going to try burning everything except the .exe file to a disk and see if that will run on my Mac.
Not sure about the autorun.inf file but it's better than nothing.
