  • How do I burn a CD or DVD that can be opened on a Windows PC?

How do I burn a CD or DVD that can be opened on a Windows PC?
Here's what we tried - and none of this worked when we tried the CD and DVD at our local library on their Dell, Compaq and IBM PCs.
    1. We have 11 documents composed in Word (2004) in .rtf format with many, many photos embedded. The documents are in a folder.
We first created a disk image of the folder using Disk Utility: File> Create image from folder. Once we had the .dmg which was about 1.16 GB we burned this onto a DVD choosing no compression and no encryption. This DVD worked fine on the MBP but it wasn't even recognized by any of the PCs at the library.
2A. We tried to compress the folder to burn it onto a CD. In DU, by choosing compression with no encryption we reduced it to about 530MB. For some unknown reason when we tried to burn this onto a CD using DU, we got the message that the CD didn't have enough space. It is a 700MB CD so that made no sense - does anyone know why this would occur?
2B. So, we went to the Finder to use its burn option. We were able to put the 530MB compressed folder which we created in DU onto a CD using the Finder. Again, this worked fine on the Mac. At the library this CD was recognized by the PCs, but Word couldn't open it. Once we got a message that it was too large to be opened (bigger than 32MB!) - the librarian did not recognize this as a default that they might have set. Mostly, we got the message that Windows could not open the document.
What should we have done? What should we do to achieve this? I know there must be a way.

    The .zip file created by File> Create Archive in the Finder menu bar, would suffice;
but if traveling as far as India, you could consider taking along a USB flash memory
dongle with the file(s) on there as backup to the one you put on a DVD or CD media.
Thanks for the extra info, K.
This sounds like a good idea, but the CD is a gift for a friend in India and presenting him with a flash drive just won't be the same. (Although I suppose we could take the drive with us and burn something there - but that's too risky if it fails on the ground and besides, what we'd have on the drive would be Mac created, unless you have an idea on how to get around that - DU DVD/CD master? convert?)
{Little space is gained by putting a .dmg file inside a .zip file; I've checked with some
    of mine and often it isn't really a deal maker to add a step in this process.}
The original folder as a dmg was 1.16GB too big for a CD. As a compressed file done in DU it was about 530MB and as a zip it is 450 or thereabouts. The files are on the MBP and I am on the G4 now and it is not turned on.
The fairly easy to use application the link takes you to, has almost no learning curve.
It will not compress an item, but you can easily; to include putting items in folders and
then use Create Archive to make them one package...
The Burn 2.3 utility makes Mac+PC compatible disc recordings, in DVD and CD media.
The simple interface is why it is handy. Otherwise, one could probably get by with the
other methods which are native to the Mac; through other steps...
I'm not sure what I am gaining at this point in time by doing this - if you both think archive (zip) and burn from finder will work.
This does sound like something we can definitely use in the future, thanks.

  • Is there some DVD software available on the Mac that can be played universally across Windows and DVD players?

I am struggling to play DVD slideshows on other windows computers and DVD players?
    Thanks
    Toni

As far as Windows computers they must have software that can play commercial DVDs.
What you can do to improve the compatibility of your iDVD disks is to follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • HT1382 Is there anyway to convert video taken by ipad and burn it to a DVD that can play on DVD player?

Is there anyway to convert video taken by ipad and burn it to a DVD that can play on DVD player?

    Persius,
Nearly every DVD that will play on a set-top player *should* play on a computer, provided two things:
1.) the computer has a DVD player that can handle that flavor of DVD media, DVD RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD DL, etc.
2.) the computer has a software player installed. This feature has been removed from some common media players. You may need to locate, download and install a separate software player.
There could be another discussion on interlaced vs progressive scan media, but I'll let you ask that question.

Purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.

I don't think any conversions are needed, just get yourself an external USB 3.5" floppy drive and drag the documents onto your iMac's HD. You should be able to locate one on Ebay or maybe even Amazon. To open them you will need something that reads .doc files like Pages, MS Word for Mac etc..

  • If i synced my iphone to my neighbors mac computer can they read my text/imessages?

If I synced my iphone to my neighbors mac computer can they read my text/imessages that are being sent and received with my iphone?

For them to read/get your iMessages, they would have to activate iMessage, using your Apple ID/password, on their computer...requires a Mac running Mountain Lion. Highly unlikely. If they did try to do such, you'd get an email, from Apple, telling you such had been done. You can prevent this by simply changing your password.
As to whatever is in your backup, now on their computer, there's nothing you can do about that. But, doubtful they'd go through the trouble of trying to extract anything from that backup...again, requires third-party software, as it is not directly accessible.

  • Is there a limit on the size of SDHC card that can be read with the iPad camera connectioin kit?

Is there a limit on the size of SDHC card that can be read with the iPad camera connection kit?

I've successfully connected 32 gig SDHC and CF cards so if there is an upper limit, it's at least 32 gig.
I know SDXC will not work.
With the cards that don't work, have they been formatted correctly? the camera connection kit will only read cards holding images. (Well, it'll only see the images) And those images have to have a file name of exactly 8 characters (DSC_2342 for example) and they  have to be in a folder named DCIM.
    Anything else it wont' read.
I put a photo on there called 'Christmas' and the connection kit won't see it. I put a photo on there in the DCIM folder named XMAS2342 it'll see that.
So it's possible that those cards weren't read because they weren't speaking the right language.

  • How do you create a program in Labview that can be run as a Windows Service?

I would like to create a Labview program that can be run as a Windows service.  I have read the following Knowlegebase articles and have done what they say.
Creating a Windows NT Service Using LabVIEW http://www.ni.com/white-paper/3185/en
    Running a LabVIEW Application as a Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2008/7  User-Defined Service http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/21BA0F671A63A60386256CB4004DF99B
When trying to start the service I get an error that says the program didn't respond to the start in a timely manner.  I also set the "run when opened" parameter in the VI.  I am programming in Labivew 2010, proffesional version.  The server is running Windows Server 2008.  Can anyone help?  Is the ini file important in Windows Server 2008?

I haven't looked through all those links.  But I have created Windows Services from LabVIEW executables way back when WinXP came on the market.
The problem with services is that they have no UI.  So you can't really see what is going on.  Your EXE might be failing or hanging due to some kind of error (most liklely a security/permissions error), but you can't see the error.  So my advice is to either:
    1.  Have your EXE write lots of info to a log file.  Write info that log every step in the application.  If an error ocurrs, have it write the error info to the log file.  That is a very useful debugging tool.
    2.  Use VI Server functions to monitor the service to see what is going on.

  • How can I sync a new Iphone 4s with an old 10.4.11 OS mac that can't update to the new version of itunes?

I have a Mac OS 10.4.11 that can't update to the newest version of Itunes. It does not recognize my new Iphone 4s. Is there other any way I can sync my phone? Apple support recommended that I update my Itunes from 9.2 to the new version but it won't install.

You cannot use an iPhone 4S with iTunes 9; you must have iTunes 10.5 or later, and that will indeed not run on Mac OS X 10.4. You'll need to upgrade your computer's OS to at least Mac OS X 10.5.8.
If, as Allan requested, you tell us your specific model of Mac, we can tell you what options you would have as regards compatible OS X versions.
    Regards.

  • Can you burn a master through iDVD that can't be copied?

Periodically it would be helpful for me to be able to create a master that can't be copied on a duplicator. I've looked for, but not found a setting in iDVD that adds some kind of an anti-copy security to the burn. Is it there and I'm just missing it?
Doing it through iDVD would be the easiest, but if not, then what about creating a disk image, then burning through Disk Utility? Is there a way an anti-copy master burn there?
I don't know how to use DVD Studio Pro (yet), but does that allow for anti-copy master burns?
    Thanks.

As stated above, if it's a burned dvd (as opposed to a commercially pressed dvd) then it ain't copy protected (ever).
Here's what apple says in their knowledge base (see question 12):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26404?viewlocale=en_US#faq12
As suggested above FCS will indeed allow you to set copy protection flags but the burned Dvd itself is not protected. See the following links for DVDSP:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25523?viewlocale=en_US
Keep in mind that even adding CSS is no guarantee the content won't be copied.
My suggestion for burned dvd's like those created through iDvd is to make an AutoStart Movie at the very beginnging with the standard FBI Warning (essentially asking others to not copy the content). Which Bengt Wärleby stated already is only a plea for the viewer/s not to use your content illegally.
Not much more to do unless you're into spending the big bucks for mass duplication and adding CSS.

  • Looking for Mac that can handle CPU intensive apps (Music & Video)

Hi everyone, I am looking to get a new mac in the near future but wanted to know which Desktop mac is best for music and video? I was thinking of the new iMac but not sure if they are powerful enough? I need something that can handle CPU intensive stuff. I will be using it mainly for video editing and music producing

    In a nutshell,
Look at the new 27 inch screen iMac models.
    Get the fastest optional CPU,
Decide which optional GPU you'd be comfortable with.
Get the base 8 GBs of RAM and then purchase extra, cheaper RAM through third party Mac RAM sellers.
Then add as much RAM as you think you need. The 27 inch screen models can take up to 32 GBs of RAM.
    Decide on optional storage sizes.
If you need a CD / DVD optical drive, these are no longer built-in and you will need to budget for a good external optical drive.
Budget for 3-year extended AppleCare warranty service.
In case of reliability issues with the first 5 years of operational life, the iMac will be covered with free warranty service for the first three years.
    Good Luck!

  • Anyone using a software product called "Neat recipt scanner"on a Mac that can tell me they like it?

Anyone using a software product called "Neat recipt scanner"on a MacBook Air  that can tell me they like it?

I have it, and I do like it for what it is designed to do. That is not saying that I use it exclusively with my NEAT scanner. I use the Neat software when I am scanning and organizing financial related documents. That is all I use it (the software) for.
However, when I use the Neat scanner for PDF files, or image files, I prefer to use the OS X included, Image Capture app. I have not found the Neat software to be as usable for capturing images.
