Burning a copy of a DVD

Hi there,
I just recieved a DVD movie of my friend that he made, he has PC (don´t know if it matters, it should´nt) and I want to make a copy of that one. It is a VOB file.
The DVD that he send to me works perfect in my DVD player and computer and it plays imidiently.
But when I tried to make a normal copy it does´nt work any more in the DVD player, just in the computer...but it did´nt play directly, I had to doubleclick it first and it only worked in VLC player.
Should´nt be that huge problem to make a copy of a DVD or?
Please let me know

Here is an Apple Knowledge Base article that explains how to make a copy of a DVD-R video. The same instructions can be found by using the built-in Mac Help. It will lead you to the Disk Utility program and its Help has the same instructions.

  • Burning 2nd copy of movie DVD from a DVD?

I have created a (movie) DVD from iDVD and would now like to make a second copy using the DVD (it is no longer in iDVD). How can I do that?

Well, if you've moved some of your original footaga, deleted it, or whatever, the "event" may still show as an event, but there may not be any actual files in it - I am guessing that is what is going on with it being greyed out. Normally you don't move the event, you move the files inside it. You might want to do a general search on your Mac with the name(s) you used (if you remember) to see if they are anywhere. If they are not, well then, the only possibility is the DVD you had made.
In that case, MPEG Streamclip is not on the Roxio website - Roxio makes Toast. MPEG Streamclip is a video converter - you can check it out here:
    http://www.squared5.com/
Make sure you read everything about it. It is free, but in some cases, requires the $20 Apple MPEG 2 Playback Component:

You should be able to create a disc image using Disc Utility (Applications/Utilities folder), then burn additonal copies from that. These articles may help: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/making_dvdcopies.html and http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/multisession_burntiger.html

  • How can I burn an iMovie project onto DVD?

I just finished a project on iMovie. I need to burn a copy on a DVD.
IDVD does work for my needs. The old versions of iMovie had an option to burn DVDs.
So... how can one burn an DVD copy without using iDVD?

  • Is making a copy of a DVD as good quality as burning another original?

I am transfering old video tape onto DVD.  When finished, I will have a dozen different DVDs.  I want to give copies to my family for Christmas.  Burning the first 12 and then making copies seems to be the fastest way to do this.  But will I get a better product if I burn multiple originals from iDVD.
What I don't know is if iDVD is going to render and compress the project for each additional DVD - thus adding hours of production time.  Anyone have a suggestion?

Being digital there should be no quality loss from copy to copy.
The easiest, and quickest, way to burn multiple copies of a DVD is to save the DVD project as a disk image, and burn that in the required number. No rendering is involved.
Bear in mind that your Superdrive can get hot. Give it a rest, and yourself a coffee, after you have burnt 3 or 4 copies!

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • I am trying to burn a second copy of a DVD.

I am trying to make another copy of a DVD I created in iDVD a few months back. But whenever I get to the encoding stage of the burn I get an ambiguous error message stating that there was an error during the media encoding process. All of the media is still connected, and has been used before.

Your thought is perfectly sane and OK - BUT that's not the way things works.
    a. There is no straight forward way back to an editable quality
    b. iDVD can not edit video at all
    c. the picture quality on a DVD is severely compressed - in a sort of View Quality - and this is about 5 to 10 times smaller and has lost lot's of information - not in any way possible to recreate to 100% - but only to a poor quality.
So I keep all my original material stored safely as it's the only way to get it if I need it again
To back convert a movie on a DVD You can try several ways - see note following
Photos in a SlideShow - I don't have the faintest and if possibly the quality will be Very Low
    DVD back for future editing
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a tray-loaded DVD burner/reader
    B. iMovie’08 prob. 09 is said to be able to import from DVD (homemade without copy-protection). I never had any success with it.
    C. I prefer one of these two ways
    • Copy to miniDV tape from set-top DVD-player --> Camera -or-
    • Roxio Toast™ - Can back convert to streamingDV for iMovie or FinalCut
    D. Read what Karsten collected.

DVDs are in a so-called delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and

for using the iLife apps, you have to convert-'em first, in

    • Cinematize >60$
    • Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    • Toast 6/7/8/9/10/11 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    • connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter

  • I am trying to burn a slideshow onto a dvd that will play on a standard dvd player and tv, but everytime I copy it I cannot play the disc except on my Macbook

I am trying to burn a slideshow onto a dvd that will play on a standard dvd and tv

You can't just copy the slideshow to a DVD as, you've found out, that won't play on a TV. You need to use a program that will render it into DVD format, complete with the proper lead in and trailers. I use Toast to do that, however, there are other programs that can do that too.

  • Copied School Project from DVD-Burn New Copy?

I copied my son's school project from a school-supplied/created DVD to my hard drive. Now I'd like to make my own copy. Can I do this? Do I need to get the DVD again to make an image instead? Or, can I copy to my Palmcorder and then import as a file? Thanks.

    @J Keller
Roxio Toast can burn these to a new DVD, but I'm not aware of any Apple apps that can handle those files without other processing.
DVDSP can also address Video_TS folders (however most folks don't have apple's professional apps).
So I'd agree that Roxio Toast (or Apple's DU) is his best option here.
Btw ... If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading that you can also try dragging your Video_TS and Audio_TS into the blank disc icon in the Finder and burning it from there.

  • How do I make sure my music will play when I burn a copy of a slide show?

How do I make sure my music will be included when I burn a copy of a slide show.  I have made many many slide shows over the years with the music in perfect sync to the slides.  I recently updated my iMac to OS 7.  I did not want to do it because I heard it created issues with iPhoto. But because I had updated my iPhone and my iPad, and although I don't like OS 7 (the first time  I have not liked an upgrade)  I thought I could figure out how to solve problems/ differences.  Well, this has me stumped.  It plays perfectly on my iMac, but when I burned a copy to share with friends, the music did not burn or transfer.  Does anyone have any ideas why this does not work, and what I have to do to ensure that the music I selected and added to the slide show using the settings did not burn along with the iPhoto slide show?
    Mairzy

I recently updated my iMac to OS 7
What is really your MacOS X version? iOS 7 is the operating system for iPhone, iPad, iPod.
But what versions are you using on your iMac? Have you upgraded to Mavericks, MacOS X 10.9.x and iPhoto 9.5.1, or are you using an earlier version?
It plays perfectly on my iMac, but when I burned a copy to share with friends, the music did not burn or transfer.
How did you export the slideshow and burn the DVD?
To have the music play along with the slideshow, you need to export your Slideshow project as a video file - use the "Export" button below the Slideshow window and select a format.
Check, if the exported video does play well and the audio is present.
Then burn a video DVD using iDVD or Toast, or a similar program to burn video DVDs,  see:

  • Making a copy of a dvd

I created a dvd of some analog home videos using IMovie and IDVD.  I would now like to make extra copies of the dvd I have made.  I followed the steps outlined in Disk Utility Help.  After I created the the disk image I ejected the original DVD, selected the disk image, then Burn, then inserted a blank DVD. However, after burning, DVD player cannot play the disk.  The error message I get is SUPPORTED DISK NOT AVAILABLE.  I've repeated this process three times and now have three unplayable DVDs.   What am I doing wrong?  I am using MAC OS 10.5.8 on my Imac.

Sometimes the drives are sensitive to the certain brands of DVDs. Exactly what DVD's are you using? I've found the easiest (it's time consuming though) method is to create a folder on the desktop then copy the original DVD's files and pasting them into the folder. After all are copied select all the files and folders (Command A) the right click and select Burn. I've also found it's best to have a bland DVD already in the drive when I select Burn.

  • Do I need to get a separate program to burn multiples copies of a DVD on Mac?

Do I need to get a separate program to burn multiples copies of a DVD on Mac, and not have the copies separate into AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS?  I made a series of lesson plans on iMovie.  When it opens on the original disk, it goes right to my music and intro menu.  When I try to burn it to a new DVD, it shows up as AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.  It does not open at all.  Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Does the disk image that you created from the previously burned iDVD project look like this?
If so you don't copy any part of it to a blank DVD.  You open Disk Utility and select it like I do in this screenshot:
insert a blank DVD and click on the Burn button.

  • How do i burn an iMovie project to DVD on new mac that doesn't have IDVD? (new mac user)

    Hi All,
Please help, im very new to the MAC world but as all my collegues use them and worship the ground they walk on i jumped ship. During this process i offered to produce my friends wedding DVD, i had three cameras and have chopped it all together and found Imovie really easy to work with. My problem now is after reading the forum IDVD no longer exists (although confusingly the export to IDVD is still on the software.
I am left with a wonderful wedding DVD that i cant get onto a DVD. please help my friends have watched their video on computer but it would be nice to get it onto some proper DVD with a title menu ETC and a case.
as mentioned above im very new to MAC so be nice lol.
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
And here is a post from Creative Techs describing how to use Burn.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many options, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates. It is no longer sold by Apple, but you can find it on sites like Amazon and eBay as part of the iLife 11 retail package. The iDVD application has not been updated since 2006, so past versions back to iLife 06 should work.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain. But it does a good job, and can provide other functions as well, such as burning a BluRay disk.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates, but it is useful for creating a DVD of a single movie. It can also create a BluRay playable disk.
Burn can make a simple DVD, but does not have the menu flexibility or the templates of iDVD. If you only need to make a one-off DVD, Burn is sufficient and free. If you make a lot of DVDs, get one of the paid packages.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can also use SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.
I very rarely make DVDs anymore, because I make my videos in high definition. With any DVD software, your movie will be reduced to standard definition and will look pretty bad on most large screen TVs. I have to remind myself that many people still have small TVs.

  • MBPro won't read SL DVD - can I copy the install DVD on a PC?

My MacBook Pro won't read the SL install DVD (as others have had problems with). I have access to a PC with DVD to DVD copy ability. My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)? Is this possible? Any tips on how would be much appreciated - a shame to buy the install DVD and unable to use it. Buying an external DVD drive doesn't make sense, as I plan on upgrading my MB with the year. Thanks!

My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)?
I'm not sure why you think that would work. Either the disk is damaged, in which case you won't be able to magically create a good copy, or your drive is damaged, in which case it's not going to read a copy any better than the original.
Is this a new disk, or have you used it before? Is it readable in other machines? Can your Mac read other disks?
