Burning a new DVD

Hi all, I created a DVD in iMovie HD and burned copies of it for some people in DVD. Thinking I was finished, I deleted all of it from my hard drive to conserve space. Subsequently, someone wants a copy of my work. I've managed to retrieve on of the DVD's back and I need to know how I can burn additional copies. I've put it into my SuperDrive and hit "copy" but nothing happens. How can I go about putting it back on to my hard drive and then burning the additional copies that I need?
thanx for your attention,
Jack

About 60G. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar of my local store this evening. They told me to open Disk Utility, select DVD, select new image on the menu bar, change the image format to DVD/CD master, encryption: none. This should create a .cdr file which I should then drag to the Disk Utility and then click Burn from the menu bar after putting in a new blank disc. I tried this twice and it told me I had an input/output error. For some unknown reason, it worked on the third try.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate the Apple "community" always willing to jump into someone else's problems and offer assistance.
cheers,
Jack

  • After inserting a DVD of numerous 8mm movies, what are the steps to move them into iDVD so titles can be added and a new DVD created?

I have a DVD containing numerous 8mm movies and I would like to insert titles before each movie and then create a new DVD.  When I insert the DVD, it's icon appears on my desktop and I can play the movies on my monitor by double cliking the icon. When I bring up iDVD it indicates I should simply drag movies or pictures into iDVD, review them and then burn a new DVD.  When I attempt to drag the DVD icon into iDVD nothing happens.  I must be missing some steps. How can I make this happen?

  • Why cant I burn my purchased music onto a new dvd?

    Hi,
I wanted to make a backup of the music I have purchased from the Music store. I have not burnt any backup CD’s or DVDs at all yet.
There are 134 songs with 697.3MB. (This doesnt mean much to me to be honest!) As this is too much for a CD I thought I would burn a DVD.
As per the ITs “help” instructions “to create a data CD or Burn DVD” I went into Itunes preferences and selected the advanced botton, then “Burning” header, then Disc Format and selected DVD and Preferred speed tab to 2x. I have also tried maximum speed.
The brand new DVD is a Panasonic DVD Ram 3X speed 4.7GB 120 mins rewritable.
All songs were checked and were in the “Purchased folder” I selected ‘burn disc’ from Itunes window and put the blank DVD in as requested...’checking media’ appears in the iTunes window.......
the DVD is continually ejected with no explanation as to why!
I have also “highlighted’ all of the songs and completed the same procedure as above with the same result.
I tried moving the selected playlist to a new folder with no joy again.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thx George UK

    SuperDrive: Ejects DVD-RAM Discs
The SuperDrive, included with some Power Mac G4 and iMac (Flat Panel) computers, does not read DVD-RAM discs.
    Symptom
The DVD drive ejects every DVD-RAM disc, but accepts DVD-ROM and DVD-R discs, which appear on the desktop without any issues.
    Products affected
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) with SuperDrive
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) with SuperDrive
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) with SuperDrive
    iMac (Flat Panel) with SuperDrive
    Solution
The SuperDrive does not read DVD-RAM discs and will eject them. They will not appear on the desktop, nor will the Finder display an alert box or error message. For more information about the discs that are compatible with the SuperDrive, see article 58770 "CD-RW and SuperDrive: Specifications and Usage Information."

  • New DVD burner not working w/iTunes

Okay, I've been working on this and digging through these forums for awhile now. I'm still stumped. So here we go:
I had a new DVD burner installed. I'm using Nero software which works fine for DVD, data, etc. However, iTunes gives me the "disc burner or software not found" message if I try to burn a disc from iTunes.
I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (yes, latest version) twice now. No go.
In edit>preferences>advanced>burning CD burner: still shows the old CD-RW.
iTunes will recognize and play prerecorded CDs and ask if I want to import them.
In help>diagnostics>CD/DVD drive tests, after putting in a prerecorded CD as requested: Optical drive detected IS the correct device (D: ASUS DRW-1814BL) BUT I get a red dot with "no audio CD found" yet the songs are showing in the device window (in actual iTunes behind the diagnostic window).

  • Can anyone recommend a  New DVD burner compatible with Retrospect?

I'm hoping some more experienced users can help me find a new DVD burner for my trusty old G4 (Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 - mirror doors).
My original Superdrive still functions, but has become a little erratic at times (and is a tad slow - like me), so I'm considering a new external burner (Firewire preferred). I've located a new LaCie drive (22x, DVD-DL, lightscribe, etc etc) model reference 301484U, but I cannot determine if it is Retrospect compatible.
As a Graphic Designer, I've built up over the years a very large Retrospect archive of all my work & clients files (several hundred CDs & DVDs), to which I must retain access. I checked the EMC (Dantz) web-site, but the burner is not listed, so I don't know if it is or is not compatible, just not tested.
I decided to go with an external/firewire drive in the hope that when I do buy a new Mac Pro I can switch it over to the new machine.
I suppose as an alternative, if I could find an external version of whatever model Superdrive is included in the current Mac Pros, that would more than likely work with Retrospect.
I would appreciate any suggestions/comments or recommendations

In the past year I have bought a Pioneer for my old G4 and a LG for my MacPro at Best Buy when they have been on sale. No problems, easy installs. If you need more detailed/user experiences check out the drive database at:

  • Is there a way i can burn a dvd to my macbook, then edit sections of that dvd and re-burn those sections i edited to a new dvd?

Is there a way i can burn a dvd to my macbook, then edit sections of that dvd and re-burn those sections i edited to a new dvd?

A DVD is not editable but there is a work around. Create a disk image with your Disk Utility program and put your content on it. When you are finished, burn the DVD using the disk image as your master. Don't delete the image. When you are ready to make edits, edit the content on the disk image and use it to burn the next DVD.

  • Burn new DVD or copy existing DVD?

For reasons too stupid, ignorant and boring to go into, I have so far been deleting the imovieproject files after I have burned to DVD, retaining the DVDproject files.
I need to clear the 50 odd GB these take up. In case I need to make a copy of a DVD for family members, which gives the best quality - burning a fresh DVD from the dvdproject file OR simply making a copy of the DVD?

So what I should have done is to trash everything BUT the iMovie!
only if you really need/want to to be able to edit the movies again, not if you just need to conserve space. And, as pointed out, having an iDVDproject without its accompanying media files is useless.
However, if you save your iDVD project as a 'disc image' you can save these image files and use them to burn more DVDs later with Disk Utility. If you are burning single-layer DVDs, they take up to 4.7 GB for a 2 hr movie, as opposed to the 30+GB for that same 2 hrs iMovie.
Many of us recommend doing the 'save as disk image' before burning the DVD the first time as a way to be sure the DVD project will come out all right.
Thus, you can have lots of these .img files and trash all the iMovies and iDVD projects and still be able to burn those DVDs at a later date.
I have saved most of my DVDs as their .img files on my external drive. I also export my iMovies to DV tapes to preserve them that way, waiting for the day when the current DVDs become obsolete and I will have to adopt a new media/method.

  • Failed burn after failed burn - What is up with the new DVD+R DL burner???

I burn a lot of DVD-R single layer DVDs at work on my G5. Both from TS folders and from disk images.
But my new Intel iMac 20 inch, has yet to burn a dual layer DVD+R disk and fails half the time with DVD-r single layer disks.
Using both Disk Utility and Popcorn.
Is this a bug, anybody else having problems?

Hold on to your hats ... I've burned about 300 DVDs on a variety of DVD media. I'm always copying stuff off to DVDRW or CDRW from movies (often video TS) to 4.4gig of data saved to DVDRW (geez, I LOVE that). Now have a great library of movies, TV shows, specials, sports. I use EyeTV to capture TV stuff then Toast 7.0.2 to burn to DVD, with and without chapters. I make backups of Movie DVDs from originals as well as old VHS fed through EyeTV and/or a Canon GL2 camcorder. No problems at all. I use genric media from Staples and it works great. Every now and then I get a coaster and recopy without problems.
I also have an external LaCie Slim DVDRW/CDRW and it is not officially supported by Apple (most other LaCies are fully supported) yet it works like a champ!.
    I truly love my iMac.

It sounds like you have assigned the primary click on the trackpad to something else, perhaps a gesture.
Use your mouse, login and then open the Trackpad preference pane and see how you have the interface configured.
Oh and you can have both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad powered up and working at the same time. No need to keep moving batteries around.

  • Buying A New DVD Burner and putting It in This ...... ?

Could you put a new DVD Drive/ Burner in a 2000 G4 Powermac with 10.1.5 OS
864MB Ram 30Gb HD. It has only a CD-Rom in it now. The Processor speed is 466Mhz. So getting a new drive would help or would it not work ?
Also would this LACIE D2 Dvd+-RW double Layer drive Firewire work on this computer ? it says on the box MAC OS X 10.3.2 Or Higher.
I want to install Tiger On it, and its only the DVD install, and do not really want to order the CD Set Up disks, and it would be good to have a DVD player on it anyway. Thanks

    Sure.
16X DVD-/+ DVR-111 or ND-3540, under $40 online newegg.com & others...; in early G4's such as yours, you don't need to remove the drive tray faceplate, so it's a simple job. You can search the KB for customer installable parts, to get a pdf or video directions should you need them.

  • Can't burn Dual Layer DVD-R on new Mac Pro?

Can't burn Dual Layer DVD-R on new Mac Pro?
I have a new Mac Pro with Pioneer DVD burner built in. I've since found out that it only burns Dual Layer +R type, and not the -R type.
My replication company need a Dual Layer -R type DVD as they can't get a glass-master off the +R type Dual Layer discs.
Can anyone recommend/suggest a cheap way of being able to either master off a DVD to Dual Layer -R disc, or perhaps copy my Dual Layer +R to a Dual Layer -R ?
    Thanks guys.

Everything I have ever read about the DVD-R DL discs says the layer break can't be chosen by the author. It is not a DVDSP issue; it is an issue with the media.
This is actually listed in the DVDSP 4.1 Late Breaking News on page 15:
    "Using DVD-R Dual-Layer Media
If your system contains a DVD drive that can write to the new DVD-R dual-layer media, you can burn your DVD project to it with DVD Studio Pro. However, there are several issues:
Since there is no current way for DVD Studio Pro to identify DVD-R dual-layer media as having two layers, burning a dual-layer project to it results in a warning appearing telling you that the DVD media may have insufficient room to hold the project. This message is based on the assumption that the disc is single layer. Both layers of the disc will be written to as needed, however, when you click Continue.
If you are burning a dual-layer project, the break point you set will not affect where the layer break actually occurs. Instead, the first layer is written to until filled, at which point the drive switches to writing to the second layer.
The switch between layers is a seamless layer change not supported by some DVD players, which may stop playing the disc when the switch point is reached.
Important: Do not use DVD-R dual-layer media unless these issues do not impact your project.
You can use DVD+R double-layer media for burning your dual-layer projects. With DVD+R double-layer media, DVD Studio Pro places the layer break point and sets the switch point to be nonseamless as specified in your project."
Can you tell us what drive you have and what firmware (revision) it is?

  • Can't burn new DVD on older iDVD project

I made an iDVD project with all our summer pics for the kids, and burned DVDs for them. I got the pics from folders I'd made in iPhoto. Now I'm trying to burn another DVD and get the following message: Errors in Project. There were errors during the project validation. These errors have to be fixed before burning the project."
I have no idea what the errors are - the only thing I've done since burning the original DVDs is delete the old folders in iPhoto. The pictures are all still in the library.
    Please help & thanks - J

Does this mean that I have to somehow "save" or "lock" the folders that I've used to create an iDVD project?
Just don't change any names or paths to images used in your active iDVD projects if you expect to reedit/reuse them.
Once you have finished a iDVD project, save the encoded project as a disk image file. The disk image file is not dependent on the orignal source content file name/location. This will enable you to burn additional copies to writable media in the future. You can NOT reedit a disk image file without using something like DVDxDV to convert the mpg-2 content to something that can be reused by iDVD in a new project.
If you have LOTS of external hard disk space, you can save your completed iDVD project as an iDVD Project Archive file. This will contain all the source material needed to reedit the project and as a result may be very large!

  • Import DVDs, Edit, Burn New DVD

I have a friend that basically wants to import DVDs he's recorded into his Mac, edit and title them, then burn new DVDs.
He really wants to be able to get the .VOB files off his DVDs, edit the footage, then make a new DVD.
Is Final Cut Express designed for this, or can it be done in iMovie '09?

Getting the files from the DVD into FCE is the tricky bit.
    Try this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11617624&#11617624
Once edited export from FCE as a QuickTime Movie export to iDVD, then burn the finshed result.
