Rather than burn directly to disk follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Can I Burn an NTSC Copy of a PAL DVD? My PB has PAL Default

i opted to choose PAL for my PB's DVD player as i buy a lot of DVDs from the UK.
i was recently sent a home DVD burned in PAL but i want to make NTSC or region-free copies for friends.
i have two questions:
1) is that possible?
2) if so, can i do it without having to have an advanced degree in computer science? in other words, i would like the instructions are simple and written in plain english, which often isn't the case at third-party websites.
i will be using iDVD 3.01.

Home burned DVDs should be region free (actually, All Regions) and your PB's DVD drive/software should be able to play both PAL and NTSC All Region DVDs.
Getting good quality format conversions PALNTSC isn't easy with the equipment we have at home. Matti's links address that conversion issue.

Burning NTSC movie on PAL disk

I decided to burn NTSC movie on a PAL disk using IDVD. The computer warned me about my action but I decided to go through with it and I got a surprise. The first DVD came out O.K but when I inserted another blank DVD for another copy, the IDVD encoder hung up and created a frisbee.
The next step I took was to transform my NTSC movie to PAL (Changed frames/s from 30 to 25) before using IDVD and choosing PAL disk. My IDVD menu movie clips were left in NTSC format, by mistake, and there was no computer warning. This time after burning two DVD's the third was a frisbee when the encoder crashed again. Each time I had to restart the computer.
Has anyone experienced the same problem ?
Is this a problem with software or my Mac ?

Not sure about the NTSC/Pal issue, but you might create a disk image and then burn a DVD-R. I use Verbatim exclusively.

Burning PAL disc to NTSC

I have purchased several PAL discs (from East Africa) that I want to convert to NTSC for some N. American viewing. Some set-top DVD players have no problem playing them but others disallow it (region code and/or not NTSC). I can play the discs in my computer using DVD Player but can I read the contents of the discs into my computer and rewrite them in NTSC format without region code problems and how do I do this? Is it worth it to purchase Ripit software?

Region Codes are used mainly my the motion picture industry for limiting movie playback to a given area / continent of commercial dvd's (as well as dvd players themselves) and hence to control playback in a variety of locations.
To the best of my knowledge, Region Codes have little to do with burning an actual Dvd thru iDvd/iLife which essentially burns to region zero to facilitate universal playback in ALL regions. The exception to this rule is if one were to use apple's FCS2 / DVDSP to set a specific region code or rather flag the dvd with a given RC).
Region Codes have much more to do with initial firmware / hardware playback configuration / settings of the dvd-rom / burner when you first configure or install a burner in your computer. It may also have something to do with apple's dvd player application. It will ask you to select a region based upon your own location (which you can do at most 5 times for the same drive / burner). You'll get a dialog box similar to this asking you to make this selection:

As for PAL vs NTSC your Mac will be able to play both PAL and NTSC discs. You should be ok here and this shouldn't be a concern as far as the computer is concerned.
However, the US is RC 1 while S. Africa I believe is RC 2. If you attempt to play a dvd from RC 1 in RC 2 then you'll get a dialog box asking you to set the proper region. And like I said, you can do this up to 5 times.
My suggestion is if you plan to be in both regions, invest in an ext. FW burner / player. Have the mac set to US (region 1) and the ext. FW device set to region 2 ..... that way you'll conserve on resetting your mac each time you wish to play a different region / dvd.

Converted pal to ntsc movie stops 30 seconds short of end

Hi all,
I have to make a dvd for viewing in America and am making a NTSC version incase the pal version does not work.
For some reason after I have converted the sequence (to ntsc pal)in FCP and then dropped it into IDVD two things happens.
Firstly the Movie has a flicker of black in between every edit (which I could probably live with) but secondly it stops exactly 28 seconds from the end of the 2 minute 54 second second sequence.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

In FCE/P I work with same standard as recorded (eg PAL)
Save as Full Quality QuickTime .mov
• NOT Selfcontained
• NO QuickTime Conversion
Then I convert this movie in JES_Deinterlacer (Can also use MPEG Streamclip or
the program in FCP bundle to do conversions (Compressor 3,))
Now I start a NTSC DVD project in iDVD and burn my DVDs.
They play well in Calif. USA

I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie to MPEG -4 Video both worked well on my iMac but will not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD RW and DVD-RW. Any suggestions?

Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs. I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD. iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable. Can anyone assist? The other codecs I used either do not pay on my video recorder or fail when I play them back on my iMac. I am at a loss as to what I can do. I am from the UK so using PAL is essential.

If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange. Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4. You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD. I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply.

Ok, I have successfully converted a DV-NTSC video to DV-PAL using Nattress Standards Conversion in FCE. The resulting output file (a self-contained QT movie) verfied as PAL in QuickTime movie inspector, 720x576 at 25fps and it plays perfectly, the video looks great, and the sound is in sync.
I had to figure out a workaround for one step in the documentation (Graeme uses an FCPro feature called 'nest items' that doesn't exist in FCExpress. I got around that by manually creating a second PAL sequence instead - see below).
If you're starting with an NTSC video, the basic procedure I used is this:
1 - create a PAL sequence and place the NTSC clip in that sequence (yes, that's right)
2 - create a second PAL sequence (add the word NEST to the name so you can tell which sequence is which)
3 - nest the first PAL sequence in the second PAL sequence
4 - open the second PAL sequence (the NEST) in the viewer by Control-clicking its timeline and select +Open in Viewer+
5 - apply the G Converter filter to the NEST (which is now open in the Viewer)
6 - click the filters tab in the Viewer so you can see the G Converter filter
7 - drag the +original NTSC clip+ from the Browser to the +Source Clip well+ in the filter
8 - verify that the other G Converter settings are what you need, especially that you have checked "Nested", "High Quality" and "Source is NTSC-DV" and that the convert setting is NTSC->PAL (these are the defaults, but you should verify them anyway)
9 - render the NEST sequence ... +this may take as long or longer than the length in time of your sequence+
10 - export the NEST sequence as a self-contained QT movie ... which will now be a PAL movie
One other note, the Standards Conversion filters need to be copied to the +Library > Application Support > Final Cut Express Support > Plugins+ folder (not the Final Cut Pro Support > Plugins folder as specified in the documentation)
If you are going to try this with your project, I suggest the following:
1 - edit your movie in an NTSC sequence. After completing all your edits (when you are done editing) export it as a +self-contained QT movie+ (it will be an NTSC movie)
2 - re-import the exported NTSC movie back into FCE (it will now be your complete movie as one large clip)
3 - follow the instructions above for using the G Converter filter to create the PAL version of your movie (using the re-imported movie as the only clip you will put in the first PAL sequence, and in the Source Clip well in the converter filter.)
You can use your first export (the self-contained NTSC movie) to create your NTSC DVDs; and the second export (the self-contained PAL movie) to create your PAL DVDs.

Can CS5 import from a PAL DVD, then burn a NTSC DVD?

The footage will need conversion at some point, and PP may not be the best tool for that job. Try the link below (but try it quick, it won't be up for long). If memory serves, one of the options Dan set up was to convert between NTSC and PAL (or in your case, the other way 'round).

IPhone 4S movies in Europe (PAL?? NTSC??) please help

I'm having problems shooting film with iPhone 4S and importing and exporting in iMovie:
- the iPhone uses variable framerate (30fps at bright sunlighy, less fps in darker footage)
- iMovies asks if the project is PAL (25fps) or NTSC (30fps). problem is that iPhone footage is neither! when choosing PAL (25fps) imovies detects iphone variable framerate footage and suggest switching to NTSC.
- when choosing PAL (25fps), the movies looks very choppy playing on my 1st gen apple tv (on my Sony Bravia PAL tv)
- when choosing NTSC: same problem.
how can this be? why can't I just import my iphone movies into iMovie, edit and export them to iTunes and watch them on my AppleTV. I thought that was the whole idea??

Burning an NTSC Disc

I have made a few copies of a dvd in pal and have just recreated an identical projected after selecting the ntsc option. However when I try to burn the NTSC version it does not accept my blank DVD-R , the same ones as I used ok for the PAL version. It justs ejects it and askes for a blank dvd!?!?!!?

Sounds strange. Is the DVD really blank?? Have you tried another DVD?

As far as I know, Encore does not include the type of editing function to convert from one format to another

So if You need better then
• Use Blu-Ray (Roxio Toast™ + BD-Burner and Disks)
• or Save out to an USB-Memory stick and play this
What's worse is that iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - Can not deliver even DVD-Standard but degrades the quality by discarding every second line in the picture. This happens when going from Eventy's to Project's - Ther is no way around this but to use another program that can deliver as
• iMovie up to HD6 - or -
• FinalCut any version
If iMovie 08-11 are only option then do not
• Share to iDVD - as this also degrades the final DVD - but -
• Share to Media Browser - and as MEDIUM (or ev. as Large) - NOT HD or other resolution as this too degrades the final DVD due to BAD downscaling in iDVD program.
My notes on DVD quality:
DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.

• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

• Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !

• Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
• Burn from this .img file (burning stage)

• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
• No File Vault on - Important
• NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
• Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
• Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
• And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

NTSC project modified to PAL project is this possible?

I have a project that i am working with that has 3 menus, 7 tracks & 17 scripts.
there are two DVD's in the "set" each one is the same... just different video tracks... essentially its a 2 disc set that i need one version of NTSC (done) and one PAL version.
I have created the NTSC project first, but before I create the PAL versions i wanted to know if anyone had come up with a way of just replacing the project assets & video assets to PAL?
I have tried removing all the video off all the tracks and deleting them from the project (this works with no menus & no scripts to convert to PAL) Next I figured it was the menus so I changed out the video assets of the menus and transitions to PAL.mov's but they are lower quality and the project still will not switch to PAL.
any ideas before i recreate all of those scripts and menus in PAL?
as a side note just to make sure... Dolby files do not matter right? I dont think i need to make PAL versions of audio.. i couldnt find a way to do it anyway... just wanted to double check that thought.

my wife and I recently received a DVD Slideshow made on a PC in the NTSC format from our Wedding photographers.
My family lives in Europe and cannot watch NTSC format. Is there a way to make a copy of my slideshow but in the PAL format?

Usually - NTSC-DVDs plays well in PAL players - but not the other way around.
So here is my notes on PAL to NTSC. Just think the other way around.
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
• Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet)
NTSC ---> PAL.
• Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
PAL ---> NTSC.
• If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
• If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
• I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
• JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
• Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
I burn to
• Verbatim DVD-R
• Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many

PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL (25 fps) 625 lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.

Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result.
a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.
