Burning a PAL DVD

I have saved the movie into the PAL format. I want to burn it to DVD but I get the message "you are trying to burn a PAL movie to an NTSC disk"
OK, what happens if I proceed with the disk I have.
If I need a PAL Specific Disk, where do I get one?
I only need to make one or two copies but i DO want this to work the first time.

Burn a PAL dvd from ntsc project

I have an NTSC project with all ntsc media and would like to burn a PAL dvd. what is the easiest way to do so. I converted the media to pal and was hoping to do a 'save as' on the dvdsp project and just change it to PAL but it won't except the media.

It makes sense that a PAL DVD project wouldn't accept media that's already compressed to MPEG2 in NTSC format. When the DVD is built, all it does is multiplex the audio/video. It doesn't change the compression or frame rate or size.
You'd probably need to recompress the original edited source video in Compressor to PAL format. Once you select a preset in Compressor, you need to change the Video Format from Automatic to PAL. Select the preset and in the Inspector, click the Encoder section, then the Video Format tab. Then you'll see the Video Format popup menu where you can change it to PAL.
One other thing to keep in mind: It might be a waste of time to convert it to PAL since most PAL DVD players can convert NTSC format DVDs on the fly during playback. I send NTSC DVDs to Hungary all the time and they have no trouble playing them with typical consumer PAL DVD players.

Trouble burning a PAL DVD

Hi, I am having issues with trying to burn PAL DVDs.
We have a distributor that requires PAL DVDs as screeners with & without TC burn.
They required we take our masters (HDCAM, 1920 X 1080, progressive, 23.98 fps) & send it to a post house that could do an Alchemist conversion & make 1080 50i, 25 fps masters on HDCAM.
This was done & we have captured the tape to FCP in a PAL project. Exported out & files went through compressor using DVD Best quality - 90 min template.
Confirmed that files are correct size & speed in inspector.
In DVDSP i set the project up as PAL.
There are no menus - just the program with 5-6 chapter markers.
PAL DVD was created as region free.
When we check the DVD on a region free deck the playback is very jerky.
Have tried playback tests with commercial PAL DVDs & they play back fine.
Anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Russ: Converting the standard is not an option through Compressor as they absolutely need the timing to be the same. I am the post person, so it is not my call. The producer's have determined that this what they have to do (right or wrong). I can do a test with the master file in compressor to see if I get better results, but it is something that I cannot deliver.
Nick: Again it is not my call. I have pointed it out to the producers & was told that is not acceptable to them. So it is my hoop to jump through. I have told them about the NTSC DVDs vs PAL & their response is that is not acceptable. We don't need worry about DVD replication anymore as all of our sales will become either digital, or delivery through this means by the distributor from the HDCAM 50i masters & using the PAL DVDs as reference.
Michael: We are monitoring the video from FCP with an AJA KONA 3G card to a broadcast monitor thru SDI (dont remeber the exact model - think it is a panasonic monitor). I will try your test as well, but I think that if I can't get the DVDs to work the way they want them then they are going to get the post house that made the 50i masters to make the PAL DVDs for them as well. They would rather not do this as all I am told is it is expensive, so they would rather not. If it comes to it, and it might based on our deadline, then they will go that route if they feel forced to.

I am in the US. I have an eMac from 2004. I am in iDVD 4. I am trying to make a DVD for my friend in Italy.
Is there a setting I can use so that I can burn the DVD in PAL?

Just send the NTSC DVD (you can convert to PAL but it isn't necessary).

PAL DVD Issues

I'm not sure if this question is for this forum but I'll give it a shot.
My original FCP Project was an PAL HDV Project. Once I finished editing, I put the sequence in a DV PAL sequence, rendered it and outputted as a FCP file. I put that file in compressor to make a m2v PAL file. I took the file into DVD SP as a PAL project and burned it as a SD DVD on the G5.
The DVD tested fine on a several DVD players.
My problem is that I sent the DVD to Europe and they are experiencing major 'strobing' issues. I know there is some jitterness with HDV on motion scenes, but they are seeing constant strobing on their PAL DVD players. Am I doing something wrong. I took the DVD to a post house in Los Angeles, and it plays fine in their PAL systems. It actually play fine in my NTSC DVD player as well.
There isn't much motion in the film, mostly interviews.
Any clues of why this would happen?

It was originally shot in PAL 1080i50 on a Sony Zu1. I am assuming that is true PAL.
I made a DV PAL sequence first because the rendering time and conversion time to m2v files is much less.
Is the DVD burner that are installed on G5's capable of burning true PAL DVD's? I have one of the original G5's.

PAL DVD color shift

I burned a PAL dvd studio pro project and when I play it back on my ntsc tv there is a color shift.
it doesnt happend to other PAL dvd's though.
And the dvd in question plays fine on a computer.
what would this be?

Most current PAL players will do NTSC disks without issues.
Most current NTSC players puke when confronted with PAL disks. That it played at all is some victory.

I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality. and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.

Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

Burning the same DVD in NTSC and PAL

Hi,
I need to burn two DVDs, one in NTSC and one in PAL.
When I started the process of burning in NTSC, it took about an hour to "Process Movie"
After that, I changed the setting in iDVD Preferences to PAL, and started to burn another DVD. This time the software skipped the "process movie" and just burned the DVD.
I thought that the movie needs to be processed again, to fit the 25fps of the PAL. but it didn't. Of course I'm happy for the time I saved. But I want to make sure that I'm right. Am I?

Most PAL DVD-player can playback NTSC (old TV = Black/White)
Few NTSC DVD-player can playback PAL
Just changing iDVD project from one to the other might work BUT THE RESULT will be BAD.
Using a program converting from PAL to NTSC is far more better eg JES_Deinterlacer.
*PAL to NTSC*
A. Conversion of commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
NTSC ---> PAL.
• Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
PAL ---> NTSC.
• If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
• If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to conver the PAL DVD to streaming.DV
• I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
• JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
• Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
I burn to
• Verbatim DVD-R
• Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
• Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about640x480 pixles (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL (25 fps) 625 lines - about768x576 pixles (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9pixles on each side to add togheter as 720

Can I Burn an NTSC Copy of a PAL DVD? My PB has PAL Default

i opted to choose PAL for my PB's DVD player as i buy a lot of DVDs from the UK.
i was recently sent a home DVD burned in PAL but i want to make NTSC or region-free copies for friends.
i have two questions:
1) is that possible?
2) if so, can i do it without having to have an advanced degree in computer science? in other words, i would like the instructions are simple and written in plain english, which often isn't the case at third-party websites.
i will be using iDVD 3.01.

I think you really selected a REGION not a format (PAL).

Home burned DVDs should be region free (actually, All Regions) and your PB's DVD drive/software should be able to play both PAL and NTSC All Region DVDs.
Getting good quality format conversions PALNTSC isn't easy with the equipment we have at home. Matti's links address that conversion issue.

Burning converted PAL to NTSC movie file on to DVD

Hi.
I'm having a few problems based around standards conversion from PAL to NTSC. I have some old home movies (PAL footage from my time in Europe) which I have been editing in iMovie. I have (I think) successfully converted the finished project into an NTSC format. However, when I burn to DVD in iDVD I am getting nasty red and green vertical lines ruining the picture when played in my home DVD player. This disfiguration seems to be triggered or coincides with any peak in the audio.
Is this a PAL -> NTSC standards conversion problem? A problem with the file I am burning to my DVD through iDVD, or a problem with my home set up? Needless to say the movie plays fine on my Mac and my home set-up plays other commercial DVD's perfectly.
Any ideas?

Welcome to apple discussions. I suggest narrowing the issue down as much as possible ... one idea is to make a disc image to the desktop of the finished iDvd. Test playback with apple's dvd player. Assuming it plays as expected then burn to Verbatim Dvd-R at 4x.
Also make sure all energy saver controls (in system pref's) are set to Never while working within iDvd. Disconnect all external third party devices prior to burning the dvd.
If none of the above works for you then go back to your original iMovie project file, check all movie properties and try to open it within QT Pro/player prior to burning. You'll need to verify playback prior to burning.

Can CS5 import from a PAL DVD, then burn a NTSC DVD?

The footage will need conversion at some point, and PP may not be the best tool for that job. Try the link below (but try it quick, it won't be up for long). If memory serves, one of the options Dan set up was to convert between NTSC and PAL (or in your case, the other way 'round).

Converting HDV FCP projects to burn standard widescreen PAL DVDs

I film and edit HDV footage from my sony hdr-hc1e on Final Cut Pro 6. I want to be able to burn PAL DVDs of my projects that will work on a normal DVD player.
In the past I have exported using quicktime conversion from FCP and used the size PAL 16:9 which gives 1024 x 576 size video files. Then my problem was these would not show up as widescreen in iDVD so i was advised to use an application 'Anamorphisizer'. That worked and i was able to make widescreen DVDs. I don't know what changes I've made but Anamorphisizer no longer works. I feel there should be a much simpler way anyway. Anyone know one?

Just thinking but I started a PAL project
Capture my material
In Browser - I expanded this on it's right side and far to the right I could select anamorphic. I did for each Captured sequense and the movie project.
Think that this worked after Export as QuickTime.mov
• No QT-conversion
• Not Selfcontained.

Burning PAL DVD

So with Shanes help last night I managed to make the .mov PAL formatted using the nattress Standard conversion filter. Now I went into DVD Studio Pro made my menus made sure it was PAL ready and started the burn process.
Yet it failed and the reason that DVD said is " Final PAL (Video):Invalid Video Asset"
Can anyone help me burn a proper PAL DVD?

Hi Anthony,
A couple of things to check.
Go to the asset in the finder and try and open it with quicktime player.
If it doesn't you have found your problem.
If it opens, if you could check the movie info and paste it here for us to view.
Also if you can paste what DVDSP thinks this asset is.
The most common problem with this is the frame size is correct ie 720 x 576 but it's still 29.97 fps. It should be 25fps.

How do I convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, menus and all?

Hello everyone,
I've been given a set of PAL DVD's which need to be converted into NTSC. Now, from my understanding, there is no one program available that can do this, so I've had to rip all the video tracks off, convert them to NTSC mp2's and author the DVD from the ground up in DVDSP, build a VIDEO_TS file, then use Toast to compress to a single layer DVD and burn. If anyone knows a program that can convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, that would be greatly appreciated.
The next problem is that when I burn any of the DVD's and put them in a duplication tower (I'm not sure if that's the actual name, but it's one of those machines where you just put the original disc in the top drive and fill the other 8 or so drives under it with blanks), it says that the burn has failed. I have tried another duplication tower and end with the same result. One option I have not tried just yet is to change the brand of media I'm using to burn, but will do so next chance I get.
I'm not sure if the two problems are related or not, but I just thought it would help.

1) Best option - only available if you have the source material - Convert source material from PAL to NTSC using the Nattress standards converter.
