Burning an iDVD6 movie to disc
Is there anyone out there in the whole wide world who has experienced the following problem and has an answer to solving it??? Q: I have completed a travel movie complete with titles, music, chapters, etc. It requires 2 DVDs. The first half was completed and burned without any problem using iDVD5. (By the time I was ready to burn the 2nd half, I had upgraded to iDVD6.) In attempting the burn, the processing steps continued without incident through "Process Movie" but when that step was completed the burn "icon" had disappeared and the rainbow volley ball started spinning. I had to Force Quit. (I had hired an Apple Pro who went through everything with me that could cause a glitch, and found no problems. I should have no problem in burning the disc. What is the deal? Is there something new in iDVD6 procedures that is unknown to me? I have dozens of projects awaiting completion but I'm ready to toss this *&$##&* computer out the window. Apple, are you guys listening? Is anyone out there who has an answer? Help!! (This is not my first call for help -- I just keep trying to redefine the problem.)

Many problems can crop up when upgrading your apps in the middle of projects. It is recommended that you finish up the project before upgrading...so in the future....etc.
That said, if your Part 2 is ready for DVD burning, thus not needing further editing, why don't you 'share' your movie as a QuickTime Full Quality movie and then use that QT movie in your DVD 6 project?
You could also import that QT movie into a new iMovie project, make chapter markers and then drop it into your DVD project.
Save your DVD project as 'Disk Image' to be sure that it will encode properly. If you get a successful disk image, use that to burn your DVD using Disk Utility. Be patient, apparently iDVD 6 is quite a bit slower than iDVD 5 in burning.
BTW, Apple does not respond in this discussion forums. We are just users helping other users

I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie using MPEG-4 Video. Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs. I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD. iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable. If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange. Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4. You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD. I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply. -
when I try to burn my slideshow.mov to a dvd disc, it will burn but when i put it in the dvd player it says 'disc error'. I have burned it thru iDVD before but forgot how to do it and it won't do it now. The slide show is on my desktop
Rather than burn directly to disk follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums. -

So if You need better then
• Use Blu-Ray (Roxio Toast™ + BD-Burner and Disks)
• or Save out to an USB-Memory stick and play this
What's worse is that iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - Can not deliver even DVD-Standard but degrades the quality by discarding every second line in the picture. This happens when going from Eventy's to Project's - Ther is no way around this but to use another program that can deliver as
• iMovie up to HD6 - or -
• FinalCut any version
If iMovie 08-11 are only option then do not
• Share to iDVD - as this also degrades the final DVD - but -
• Share to Media Browser - and as MEDIUM (or ev. as Large) - NOT HD or other resolution as this too degrades the final DVD due to BAD downscaling in iDVD program.
My notes on DVD quality:
DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.
2. Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc

• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)

1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.

• Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
• Burn from this .img file (burning stage)

TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
• No File Vault on - Important
• NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
• Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
• Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
• And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

If you're trying to copy a commercial movie and burn it to disc, then it is expressly against the Terms of Use of this community to describe any method to illegally copy or circumvent copy protection DVD's
If you've made a movie and want to author a DVD, then you should use iDVD, Toast or, if you're really skilled, Final Cut Pro X.
If you just want to move a movie to a DVD, which probably won't play on a DVD player, then just insert a blank DVD, and move it over from the finder. Click burn. -

When burning a completed movie in idvd the whole sound track of the last chapter disappears. When I play the whole movie in iDVD before burning to disc both the sound tracks are their, but when burnt to a DVD the two sound tracks disappear half way through the last chapter, can any one help please.

Idvd won't burn dual layer movies
Hi. Can someone help me figure out how to make my idvd burn dual layerd movies? I've done everything the same as I always have and it still won't do it. Do I need to buy something other than Sony discs? I'm at my whits end. Any ideas out there?

Read the intro and the Mac OS X section. When you compose a post, you may add a screen shot by clicking the camera button and following the instructions.
Under the cricumstances, I think it's better to start a little further back.
Quit all apps and restart the Mac.
After you've logged back in, first check how much free disk space you have. In Finder, select your hard disk and choose File > Get Info. Look at the General section (if it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "General". Check the figure for "Available". If it's not al least 12GB, you need to clear up disk space. You should have at least 12GB free disk space to proceed. (This is not a carved-in-stone figure, but something that should keep you on the safe side. More is better; but there's no need to exaggerate.)
Next, let's check the drive. Press the Option (⌥) key and click the Apple () menu. The first item on the menu should be "System Profiler…" When System Profiler is up and running, under "Contents" you should see the line "Hardware". If it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "Hardware". A few lines down, you should see "Disk Burning". Click on it. You should get the details of your DVD drive. "Burn support" should say "Yes"; "DVD-Write" should say "-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW". If all that is correct, quit System Profiler.
Next, start iDVD. If no project is available, it should show the opening dialogue.
Click on Magic iDVD. In the Magic window, type a short name for "DVD Title". Let's say, Test.
Drag your movie to the "Drop Movies Here" strip.
On the bottom right there are two buttons, "Create Project" and "Burn". Click the "Create Project" button. iDVD should generate and save the project. The Project window should appear.
Choose "Project Info…" from the Project menu. Check the choice for "DVD Type". It should be "Double-Layer (DL) - 7.7GB". If it isn't, make it so. Close the Project Info window.
Now choose File > Burn DVD… Make sure the DVD you insert is indeed a DL (it should be marked as such, and the label should say something like "8.5GB data").
If it fails as before, you should return to the project window. This time, choose File > Save as Disc Image… Save it to a convenient location.
Open Disk Utility. Choose Images > Burn…, select the image saved in the previous step, and try to burn it. If it works, then the problem is with iDVD. (Keep in mind that a DL disc burned with Disk Utility may not work or may cause problems in a DVD player. This is only a test to try to isolate the problem.)
If it doesn't work with Disk Utility either, then the problem is with the drive or the disc. Reset the SMC and try again.

If it still doesn't work, try a different brand of discs, from a different manufacturer (and preferably manufactured in a different country).
If several brands of discs fail, then the problem is likely with the drive. Get a lens cleaning disc and use it to clean the drive. If that still doesn't solve the problem, then it's probable that the drive is damaged and should be replaced. If the drive is old (4–5 years) the likelihood that it's damaged increases. -
When using Final Cut Pro X (iMac mid 2011 model-version 10.1.3) to burn 1 hour movie onto DVD, it seems to render but when computer says 'Sharing to DVD successful' and yet DVD is blank, what's my next move? Burning hardware is working as I burned a project using iMovie afterwards. I filmed a funeral service and family get together afterwards but can't share it with family and friends...plz......suggestions/recommendations/condemnations........
Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.

Yes, there are other programs that will put a movie on a DVD. I have tried most of the substitutes. None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD.

With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40. (works with all Mac OS 10.5 and newer.)

Help!! I can't get my new macbook to print with my Dell 155w OR burn a home movie to DVD
I cannot get my very recently purchased macbook pro to burn a home video to dvd OR connect to my dell 155w printer. I bought a macbook because it was so highly recomended. But I don't want to keep replacing things. I am so frustrated. I wanted a macbook because of its reputation. But I can't seem to figure out anything. I'm dissapointed and thinking I will just return it.
Your problem may be able to be solved but take this from a Long time Windows user and current Mac owner. Macs are not easier to use. Mac break down just as often as PCs, percentage wise as to how many are sold/produced.
They use the exact same hardware as Win PCs.
The learning curve for OS X is greater then for Windows.
Not sure of the age of your printer but it may not be supported in the newest Mac OS, Lion.
We would need a little more info on how you are trying to connect TO the printer. USB cable or Wirelessly.
As far as burning a Home Movie to DVD. Apple use to supply a program called iDVD for this but with the introduction of Lion OS they stopped supplying that program. You could try another burning program. Try Burn or you could buy something like Toast (Burn is free).
Personally I would return your Macbook Pro and stick to what you know with a good PC notebook.
Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy for Full refund. Take advantage of that policy. -
i can't burn a playlist to a disc from itunes, it comes up with no supported disc burners found, any ideas?

-also ran "Repair" with new download of iTunes
-am using the same spindle of CDs that worked perfectly a month ago. Tried another brand also to be safe. None worked.
-ran CD/DVD diagnostics within iTunes with Apple Care - no issues apparent
-also tried write-speed 20X on advice of Apple Care (don't know why they thought 20X would be the magic number after the other 3 I tried didn't work)
-tried running itunes in another user account on the computer - same problem, same error code
-Apple suggested it was a copyright issue. I can't even burn music that I created/recorded myself, so that doesn't make sense.
-They thought maybe Quicktime wasn't installed properly, so we checked a film in Windows Media - it played, meaning Quicktime was fine apparently.
Solution:
Unclicked CD text option & Sound Check, ran burn from the File drop down menu (max speed) on a Philips CD-R and it worked! Had been right clicking the playlist name and selecting Burn option from there. That being said, it did not work on 2 other brands prior, with same settings. Not sure why. Just happy it's working again. Is it a brand issue? -

You need burn software to do so. Do you have iLife 09 or 11 installed? If so, you have iDVD which is perfect. What app did you use to edit/put together the movie?
If you don't have iDVD, then take a look at Roxio Toast ($$) or Burn (free) or google for other apps.
FWIW, I've never parked a home made movie in iTunes, so I have no idea if there is anything you can do with it there. My guess is you need to get it into the burn software. And, if you still have an older version of iMovie, it may still have a burn option within. -
[nForce] no audio on disk or image when burning a dvd movie
i've recently bought a K7N2 Delta I lsr and since i've had this i have never been able to burn a dvd movie no matter what i try. I've started from scratch trying with just the AC-97 audio drivers installed and downloaded the latest nforce audio drivers from nvida website, nomatter what i do i cant get a movie on disk correctly. When i build an image on my harddrive, i play it and theres no audio and when i build a dvd disk either the audio wont play or the entire disk wont play. my dvd player either says disk cannot be played or the disk is dirty. But when i import the image or disk into dvd shrink the film plays fine with audio. I'm at a total loss. i dont think that my processor has anything to do with it but i have an AMD Athlon 3200+ and 512meg 3200 Geil ram. If anybody has any ideas or better still a solution i would greatly appreciate a reply.. Thankx for your reply in advance...

Recently bought, you say. Does that mean you have installed all mobo drivers, repair installed Windows, etc?
Have you tried the disks in another system?
Do you use the same software for playing and recording?
I don't think this is it, I think it is a software/driver problem, but two quick ones:
Untic in Device Manager for the optical device "Recognise insertion", as that can ruin a burn.
Remove the audio cable if you got one between the optical device and the sound card. -
Best way to burn a DVD+R DL disc?
I was wondering what everyone thought was the best way to burn a DVD+R DL disc.
This is how i do it and let me know if you have better results doing it a different way.
1. Never burn from DVD SP, always use Toast instead.
2. Select All Regions (including #7) in DVD SP
3. Build/Format, then select Harddrive, .img file
4. Use Toast and select Copy, then Image File.
1. I never burn in DVD SP because it uses the fastest write speed that your disc/burner does and this seems to have issues.
2&3. I always select All Region because DVD SP by default doesn't select #7 (no clue to why that is) and if you got to harddrive using .img, then that is CMF format and CMF needs all region (RCM Value of 0). Otherwise DVD SP will have different region codes in the MAIN.DAT vs. the CONTROL.DAT. 0 and possibly 64 or 40.
4. With Toast you can set the write speed. I just use 2X and this takes 40 minutes or so for a full DVD+R DL disc.
But..
Is this the best way?
Or is the DVD-ROM (UDF) option a better way?

Not that this really helps you solve the dvdsp thing but if they are regular clients maybe buy a cheap(ish) dvd player that plays your discs fine and send them it. Explain the ±DL issues. Say the authoring is fine but the ±DL media thing is a mine field so here is a player so proofing goes smoother in the future.
If Toast is working better then send a media input form with the proof stating where the LB will be on the master etc.
I'd like to hear anything anyone else has to say but I'm sure we're aware of most of the options already.
FWIW, if you're running 10.4.x you can type drutil info in Terminal and hit enter to see what types of media the attached drives can burn,
