  • How to burn and finalize a dvd for the dvd player?

I just upgraded to Lion on my MacBook Pro. I burned a dvd from a torrent through the Mac's own disk utility. I didn't see anywhere that it finalized it. It did say it verified it. Is this the same thing? I am trying to play this dvd with is DVD+R on the dvd player but it says it cannot be played. I tried formatting it to a mpeg4. The dvd player is a Panasonic, which is a few years old (model called Double Feature).
Please use lay turns so I can understand. I am not that tecchie.
    Here are my three questions:
1: Am I using the right kind of dvd to record it with?
2: What format should I be using? In am in the California region of the US. I don't know if I should be using  PAL or NTSC. I Googled it but I am still confused as it says to check your region. Is there a universal format?
3: How do I finalize a dvd burn when I burned it from the Mac not using a third party application? I used the Mac's own burn capabilities.
Your answers and advise would be greatly appreciated.

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

  • DVD Player suddenly stops recognizing and playing homemade DVDs

The DVD Player in our G5 has suddenly stopped recognizing and playing some home made movies on DVD from several friends. These discs played just fine before, but now we get a message that says "supported disc not available".
I've got the latest version of DVD Player 4.6.5. Why would it suddenly stop reading all these DVDs? Thanks for any ideas or help. Bob Krist

    My experience/opinon:
Without blaming Apple, it is a DigitalRightsManagment
problem, Apple is obligated to fullfill. You will
find that your homemade DVD plays fine on any
ordinary PC or even annother MAC-environment, just
    not on your own.
As of Mac-OS-X.46(5 not quite sure ) Support for
    UDF-Format ceased,
I believe to have read somewhere. So your DVD is
    mounted, but does'nt
    show up on the desktop.
    I am using OSX 10.4.7 (Build 8J135) DVD Player 4.6.5 (Framework 4.6.6)
Home-made video DVD-Rs work fine. DVD player starts when a disk is inserted. The disk shows up on desktop. Get Info and Disk Utility show UDF (Universal Disk Format). Finder shows the VIDEO_TS folder, .VOB files, etc. Get Info's Preview window will even play the .VOB files.
So, UDF read support is still in OSX 10.4.7 OSX has never had UDF write support except for iDVD.
I personally record movies from TV, legally. And my
solution to that problem is to create a Disk-Image,
    that I burn on a data-disc, and I don't use
    DVD-Player.
DVD Imager <http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html> will create UDF disk image files from VIDEO_TS folders. When you burn these with Disk Utility they will play in standalone DVD players and in Macs. They will start Apple's DVD Player when inserted.
Toast can also create UDF disks.
If you create non-UDF disks (e.g. with Disk Utility), most standalone DVD players will not play them and Apple's DVD player will not start automatically when the DVDs are inserted. You can still play them with Apple's DVD Player by using "Open DVD Media" from its "File" menu and choosing the VIDEO_TS folder.

  • Can I burn and play an HD disk in a Mac?

I teach at an art school with about 100 MAC Pros; about half are 2 x 2X Dual-Core Xeons with 2 GB RAM. We have Pioneer DVR-112D DVD burners. We can't afford to buy 100 Blu-Ray burners; I hope we afford even one.
But our students want Hi-Def! They say it's sick, pimp, and dope. (Me too.)
I found some confusing comments about BD-5, burning an HD file onto a regular DVD disk with a regular red-laser burner. I realize you can't get nearly as much time on a regular DVD disk, and you can't play a regular DVD disk in a Blu-Ray player. But could we burn short projects (15 minutes) onto regular DVD disks in HD and play them back on our same Macs - in HD?
    Has anyone tried this?
I really, really want to know!

That is what you want to do, you are making red dye semi-HD DVD (not bells and whistles, just video streams and menus for the most part) so if you make an HD project in DVD SP then burn it to a red dye DVD-R/+R that is what you get, can burn straight from your computer and it will also play in HD DVD players (which will be vey rare shortly ) Some older macs may not play the disc properly nut it should work fine on the new ones

  • Using Apple to store and play my DVDs

I have hundreds of movies on DVD-- all legally purchased over the years. What is the best way to store them and play them? A mac mini? Apple TV? I would like to be able to use Front Row to browse my library on the big screen TV. Any recommendations for the best configuration?

I too have decided to go in this direction. Right now, I have two Pioneer 300 DVD changers about half full of my movies & TV shows. They're connected into my big screen and my theater surround system. I get a great picture and great surround sound. But accessing movies is really clunky and slow, and now one of the changers screws up disc loading every once and a while. So I am working on setting up a Macintosh Media Center.
My goals are: 1) move all my video off DVD media into chapterized MP4 files stored on hard drives. 2) move all my music from iTunes in my G5 into the new Mac Media Center. 3) Try to have the AC3-5.1 digital surround stream fed from the Media Center into my theater surround system. 4) Try to have the digital video stream feed from the Media Center directly into my big screen HDTV at 1080i [the only resolution other than 480p my big screen accepts]. 5) have my Harmony One universal remote try to control everything as it does now. 6) be able to tranfer non-DVD media [VHS/Laserdisc/Satellite/Over-The-Air HD] into the Media Center.
So far, after looking around for a couple of weeks, this looks easy to do. I've decided on a Mac Mini Core Duo as the center of the Media Center, as you need at least a Dual G5 or a Core Duo to work in HDTV. I've also decided to stay away from AppleTV due to all its silly little limitations. I can connect the Mini directly to my big screen via the included VGA adapter. Then the Mini can be set to output 1080i video using SwitchResX, a video manager app from Madrau.com. Further the Mini had TosLink digital audio input and output for simple connection to my Yamaha surround amp. As for other hardware, I'm probably going to go with a Logitech diNovo Edge Mac Edition Bluetooth keyboard and a Logitech MX Air mouse that works a mouse cursor with your hand and mouse in the air. For video input, I have to get an Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus. This will not only digitize standard TV video and audio, but also has an antenna connection for over-the-air digital broadcasts. With my Dish receiver, pro VHS deck, and Laserdisc player all connected into the surround amp which then connects to the EyeTV, I can do DVR ops with any video source.
I have been playing around at DVD conversion to MP4. My current workflow is to backup my DVDs with MacTheRipper, use MPEG StreamClip to save a movie as one big VOB file, the convert the movie with Open Shiiva. A 45min Star Trek episode compressed from 1.84GB down to 226MB with no apparent change in video or audio quality. A 92min movie compressed from 3.09GB down to 1.04GB. After the DVD is turned into an MP4 file, I use an app I just found called MetaData Hootenanny to add my own chapter marks to the movie. This works great, both in QT Pro and in Front Row. I also see that HandBrake does most of the same work, but you lose some flexibility.
Where I'm at right now is file organization. iTunes does great job of organizing music MP3s, but doesn't touch video files at all.
Hey!!! All you Front Row Experts out there!!! Am I doomed to having a single list of a bzillion videos that I have to scroll thru or is there some way to organize a pile of six or seven hundred videos into some kind of multi-level order??? ....say by show / season / episode no for TV shows or genre for movies??? Right now I just have a gaggle of music videos, some TV show themes and a couple of movies. That's 147 videos and I haven't even got started on my DVD collection.

  • Cannot burn and erase rewritable DVDs

    Hi all,
two month ago I ordered the new MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011). Some days later I wanted to erase a rewritable DVD to burn an iDVD project I just finished. I tried to erase the DVD with the hard drive program that comes with every mac, but the status doesn't change, it's always saying to "prepare" the erasure. After some minutes it stops and a message saying that the disk has been successfully erased appears. Ejecting and inserting the DVD makes all files visible again, the optical drive made nothing.
It's nearly the same with burning DVDs (I tried several programs). In iDVD, he "prepares" the burning for some minutes, and afterwards, a message declares the DVD as successfully burned. Ejecting and inserting the disk - NOTHING happened, there are no files on the disk.
I tried several brands, no improvement. I have absolutely no problems with CDs, no difference whether I use +R/-R or +RW/-RW disks. And the technical details of my MacBook Pro also say that burning rewritable DVDs is no problem.
Thanks for possible solutions and ideas,
    jalfke
    Technical details:
MacBook Pro series 13" early 2011 (the "newest" one)
    Intel Core i5 @ 2,3 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    500 GB HDD
    Optical Drive: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898

Sorry for the bad information, the program I mean is die "Disk Utility" in Programs -> Utilities. Erase and burn images on rewritable DVDs should be possible with this utility. I have absolutely no problems with "only-once"-writable DVDs.

  • Is iDVD completely gone in version 10.8.2? I would like to be able to make a DVD with an interactive menu to burn and play on a DVD play as you could with iDVD.

I would like to make and burn a DVD as you could with iDVD that was available with OS 10.4 -- is this no longer a possibility with 10.8.2?

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
Apple has clearly indicated in the newest Mac mini and Retina Display MacBook Pro that it plans to get rid of optical disc drives as soon as possible across the board, providing an external USB drive as an option for users who need one.
Users increasingly have fewer opportunities to use optical drives, as the bulk of third party software is now available as a digital download either directly from the vendor or through Apple's App Store. Apple also sees digital distribution as the future of music and movies, as exemplified in Apple TV, which has never included an optical drive.
The company has never supported any new HD optical disc formats on its products, including Microsoft's ill fated HD-DVD or Sony's Blu-ray format, despite initially being involved in the Blu-ray standardization process. Instead, Apple has put its resources behind developing increasingly higher definition audio and video formats that it can distribute electronically through its own iTunes Store.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • DVD burning and playing

I burnt a DVD (4.42 GB) on my Mac, and it worked well on a PC!  I tried to read it on the MAC but it just kept going round and round and round.  I tried forced quitting but nothing happened.  I could not eject the disk.  I had to switch off with the on/off button.  When I restarted it was all rerpeated.  Relaunching the finder did not help either.
I re burnt the data to a second DVD and the same thing happened - the PC could read it the Mac seemed to go into a never ending loop?
    What is causing this?

    Try pressing the Eject key.

  • Idvd settings for burning and playing on TV

    hi,
I just bought iLife 8 and made my first dvd project. It all worked fine besides the last step: playing it on a TV. On idvd 6 all went fine, but I don't remember how I did the job then
On TV I can see the theme, choose from the menu, hear the music, but the screen is in black and white (in an ugly way)!
PS I burned the project on a DVD-R from imation. Just bought Philips DVD+R..

Did you set the preferences in iDVD to be for PAL TV output or is it still set to NTSC?
Start iDVD and go to the Preferences option in the iDVD menu.
Click on the 'Projects' Tab and make sure that PAL is selected (I think that is what you use in Belgium)

  • IMovie save on Harddrive and played through DVD player

I have a DVD player that can use a flash drive. Instead of burning my IMovie project in IDVD to a disc, how can i get a finalized IDVD movie on my flash/harddrive to play from the DVD player?

    Steve,
It sounds like the default setting of your set top DVD player is 'Pan and Scan' instead of 'Letterbox'.
Go into the menu of your player and change the default setting for 'what to do when a 16:9 disc is inserted' to 'Letterbox'. If you can find it, the manual for your DVD player should tell you exactly how to do this.

  • My "Themes" page does not appear when I play my DVD- it goes straight to playing the slideshow.

I have never been on this forum so I am not sure what I am doing exactly. I went to the Apple store today to learn how to use iDVD. We created a "Themes" page and when I view my slideshow in iDVD everything plays together but once I burned it to a DVD and played the DVD on my computer and DVD player at home the "Themes" page does show up- it just goes straight into playing the slideshow.

Check in the Map mode of your iDVD project to see if the slideshow has been dragged intoi the blue "Auto Play" bin.  If that's the case then that's why the findished product begins playing automatically.  Just drage it out of that bin, save as a disk image and play the disk image with DVD Player to see if the menu shows up as expected. If it does then you can burn the disk image to disk using Disk Utility as 4x or less.

  • How to burn project to a DVD

I assume i have iMovie HD 6 since i bought my MacBook in july. How would i burn my iMovie project( which is my movie/slideshow from vegas) how would i burn it so it will play(i have a DVD recorder which burns and plays DVD+R) so i want to burn my project to a blank DVD+R. How would i do this?

ok, this shouldn't be too hard. First, you have to create an iDVD project. The best way to do it is to go to the menu bar and under "share" click on iDVD. in iDVD there is a pretty obvious button labeled "burn". This way, you can create a format for the menus and scene selection. If you want to, you can also click on burn to disk in iMovie. It's under "file". this way it will play automatically and there will be no menus or scene selection.

  • My Desktop T770 UK does not play a DVD

When I try to play a DVD  states "requires a decoder " This is a Media Centre  burns and plays DVDs

Are you referring to Windows XP Service Pack 3? I would uninstall and reinstall the media program you are utilizing, since it worked without a decoder originally. I would also like you to attempt the same task on a secondary media program, to pinpoint the source of error.
If the program really requires a decoder, you can download all decoders and codecs from the Internet. For example, you can download all of them for Windows Media Player. By downloading and applying all of them, the issue should not arise, unless working with a file format that is not supported by the program.
Please respond with your results as soon as possible. I will continue to research this issue.
