Burning audiobooks to DVD in iTunes

I can't seem to find how to burn my audiobooks to a DVD. They're too big for a CD unless I use several.

Ramona,
Colin is right about backing up your audiobook onto DVD. However this only serves to keep a copy which you can use to restore it to iTunes if it gets deleted. You will not be able to listen to it on a CD player (or on a DVD player - I think - although I may be wrong about this.)
To back it up, while in iTunes go to File then Back Up to Disk and it will walk you through the process.
If you want to listen to the audiobook via disk, you do have to burn multiple CD disks (just as the audiobooks you purchase at a book store are on CD.) If you burn to CDs, you will be able to listen to them. However, if you bought the audiobook from the iTunes Store it can be downloaded to an iPod, but I don't think you can burn it to CD ( I have tried this and it won't allow it) because of copyright protection.
So, you might be able to burn it to a DVD disk, but then you are tied to your computer (or maybe a DVD player) in order to listen to it.
Some instructions from Help on burning CDs follow:
If you plan to play the CD on a consumer CD player (not only on a computer), you need to use a blank CD-R disc, not a CD-RW disc. You can use DVDs with your computer, but most DVD players can't read data DVD discs. ("RW" stands for "read-write" and means the disc can be erased and reused.)
If you do want to burn to CD, here are some instructions from iTunes Help:
To create an audio CD:
Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and click Burning.
Select Audio CD as the Disc Format.
To have all the songs on the CD play at the same volume, select Use Sound Check.
Click OK.
Select the playlist containing the songs you want to burn to the CD, and make sure all the songs you want to include on the CD have a checkmark beside them.
Click Burn Disc (at the bottom of the iTunes window) and insert a blank disk.
If the playlist contains more songs than will fit on the CD, iTunes burns only the number of songs that fit on one disc, and then asks you to insert another disc to continue burning the remaining songs.
If the playlist includes Audible spoken programs with chapter markers, the chapters are burned as separate tracks.
After all this, if what you want is a convenient, portable way to listen to audiobooks, an iPod is really the way to go. I use mine all the time to listen to books while I walk.
I hope this is helpful.

  • Burning a data DVD for iTunes?!

When i try to burn a data DVD of all of my songs from iTunes it goes through all of the steps but then when it gets to the the burn stage I get an error message that says "the attempt to burn a disk failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media". I have gotten the message the vast majority of the the time but it has managed to burn 3 DVDs in a row the weird thing is that i didn't change any of the settings or anything and now it won't burn it anymore and i just keep getting this message. Does anyone know what this means or what I need to do? Please Help!!!

Are you trying to backup your library? If so a much much easier way to do it is to buy or put together an external hard drive, preferably one that can hook up via Firewire and preferably larger than your internal. Then use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and make a full clone of your internal drive to the external, which would include your iTunes, and if you use a Firewire able drive, you can even boot from this clone in a pinch.
Sorry I don't have an answer to your specific question since I backup on an external hard drive and don't mess with DVDs for this sort of thing. $112 can put you into a 300GB external drive, so they are not expensive.

  • Burning movies to DVD from iTunes

I have a few dozen movies in my iTunes library that I have acquired from various sources - ripping from disc or copying from an external hard drive. I wish to burn all these movies to DVD to free up space on my computer. I have tried burning the movies with iTunes but my DVD player will not read the disc. It gives me a message saying, "There is no video or audio data." What should I do?

    ErinGillaim wrote:
It may caused by the video codec which are not recognized by your DVD Player.
It's not. iTunes does not burn a regular, playable DVD.
In this case, you can use some third party DVD burning tool to rip iTunes movies to DVD.
Rip means to get eth info off a CD/DVD.
Burn means to create a CD/DVD (because the disc is burned with the laser).

If I burn audio CD or DVD from my iTunes, I cannot play this music on an external player. Any recommendations? Thanks

Hi I just burned an MP3 CD straight from iTunes, and it doesn't play on any MP3 CD player I've tried it on (car MP3 deck, DVD player that plays audio CDs, and MP3s). Audio CDs burned from iTunes work fine though.
I've read somewhere, that when burning MP3 CDs from iTunes, iTunes burns it with Apples standard format, rather than CD players standard format of ISO 9660. And that is the reason why burned MP3 CDs from iTunes only plays on a Mac.
A work around I've done was select all the songs from my list duplicate them in another folder, and then reconvert them in MP3s (so that I don't have to search all over the place for each MP3 file). I then burned these MP3s onto a CD-R using toast's MP3 CD format. And it works on all my MP3 CD players. However, in doing this process, I've lost all the tags for each MP3. The only thing that comes up in the display is the name of the song. Artist, Album, etc... don't show up anymore.
Is there a way of burning an MP3 CD that will play on all MP3 enabled players, while keeping all ID Tags intact, in iTunes?
    Thanks.

  • Can´t burn Library to DVD with iTunes 7 -Error 8785

When Burning my whole Library to DVD (The new Backup Feature), iTunes 7 tells me about an unexpected error (-8785) while throwing out the 2nd DVD to burn. The first DVD is already finished. Any Ideas how to fix it?

For me the problem is solved:
On oct. 17. I bought this song:
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=14929468& s=143443&i=14929691
In iTunes it has the following track information:
    Title: We Are the World
Interpret: Ars Canto G. Verdi, B.B. King, Boyzone, Gianni Morandi, Gloria Estefan, Guatemala Choir, Joe Cocker, José Molina, Laura Pausini, Lionel Richie, Luciano Pavarotti, Mariah Carey, Marianne Tatum, Melanie Daniels, Orchestra Sinfonica Italiana, Pino Palladino,
On my harddrive I can find the file in my iTunes Library folder, but even spotlight isn't able to locate the file.
In iTunes on the information dialog of the song it reads "nicht verfügbar" wich is "not available" but the song plays fine.
I removed the song from my library and the backup worked!!!
After the backup completed successfully I added the file again and the backup throwed Error -8785 again.
Solution: I renamed the the interpret tag to "Various", the filename/directory changed in the finder and the complete name/path shows up in iTunes. Backup now works fine including this tune!!!
Look at the iTunes Tags for suspicious long names in the tagfields that are used the generate the filename on the harddisk. Inspect these files in iTunes on the information tab.
In conclusion I would say: This is an iTunes Bug!

  • I received the following message when iTunes launches: "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's or DVD's are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning softwarre.  Please reinstall iTunes"

Everytime I connect my iPod Touch (4th Gen) to my laptop, running Win 7 (64 bit) I get the message "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes"  I have reinstalled iTunes several times and it has not fixed the issue.  I am running ver 10.2.2.12 of iTunes.  I HAVE NOT installed any other burning software to my laptop either.  I haven't tried uninstalling iTunes and then re-installing it yet.  Would that perhaps fix the problem?  I've read that many users have had issues with the new version of the software and I was wondering if that might be causing my issue.  I'd like to point out that iTunes seems to work after getting rid of the message, but I haven't tried to burn any CDs or put music from a CD to my laptop.  Any ideas on how to get rid of the annoying message?
I also am having trouble hooking up with our other computers using  Homegroup.  I noticed quite a lot of people are having the same issue and hopefully they come up with a fix for that soon.
    Thanks in advance.

If you're still getting the error message (especially when you plug in the Touch), I'd check for a device filter confusion on the PC. (They can affect the connection of USB devices to a PC, as well as burning and importing CDs.) For that one, see:

  • Burning DVD with iTunes

I'd like to put large files of podcasts onto a DVD because they would take up too many CDs. I can't find any instructions beyond vague "you can do this...or that..." without explaining how to do it. And I don't want to waste DVDs making mistakes.
Can anyone outline the simple steps? If it is simple.

    • Create a new playlist
    • Drag all files you want to burn on DVD to this playlist.
    • Set 'Disc Format:' in Preferences>Advanced>Burning to 'Data CD or DVD'
    • Select the playlist if it's not already selected
    • Click on the 'Burn Disc' icon (top right).
iTunes will check media and playlist.
If the files don't fit on the disc, you will see the message:
"The songs in this playlist will not fit on one data disc.
Do you want to create multiple data discs with this playlist split across them?
This will require more than one blank disc to complete."
If you think only a few files need to be removed from the playlist to fit the others on one disc, click cancel, remove some files from the playlist and try again.
At the bottom of the iTunes window you will see the total amount of GB's that the playlist takes. Although a DVD says to be 4.7 GB, you can't fit more than 4.3 - 4.4 GB on it (due to difference in calculation methods and index files).
To remove the files from the playlist and the Library after a successful burn, select all items in the playlist (command-A) and Option-Delete them (hold the Option key and press the DEL key)
    Hope this helps.

Three issues here.  The pre-pending is useless when selecting songs to play, plus it.takes up much of the admittedly limited space in my on-screen menu.  Since it doesn't help me select a song to play, it simply prevents more relevant info from being displayed in that area.  However, there is a second area on the menu that is designed to list title, artist and album but those fields are blank - despite I-tunes inclusion of the info in the xferred files.
    JCP,
Regarding the tags, on an MP3 CD iTunes simply burns whatever is embedded in the MP3 file.  From your description, it sounds like the Onkyo is seeing the filenames but not the tags, which does seem strange.  You may want to try the question in an Onkyo forum.
If you don't need the pre-pended serial number, and don't care about the sequence, you can burn from iTunes as a data CD instead of an MP3 CD.
