Burning Basics/Tivo Troubles

Dear Folks,
Please excuse me if this is in the wrong forum. If it is maybe someone can point me to the right one.
I started out rather naively trying to transfer programs from My Tivo and burn them using my DVD burner on my laptop. I was able to maybe do this successfully twice.
Then I started running into problems with files too large to fit on a single disk. Initially I was using TivotoGo to transfer the files and then Toast 8 to burn them, which is the recommended and commercial solution to the problem. Aside from slow transfer speeds, once I got the too large file over my Harddrive, burning would not be possible. After a lot of digging around, I would get the suggestion to save the file as a disc image, put it in TS folder and then Toast would compress it properly onto a DVD.
Toast however after taking over a day (like around 16 hours or so) to encode the file inevitably fails in the last part citing an error -39 in some cases.
After yet more digging around it was suggest I switch over to TivoDecodeManager, a shareware app that will transfer the file to the Mac and decode it as an MPEG. What I'm supposed to do to burn it after that is not clear. I understand I can use something called MPEG slipstream possibly to edit it, but then all advice seems to devolve into a discussion of formats, that assumes I know a lot more than I do about formats.
Has anyone specific advice? If not is there a crash course/tutorial in burning DVDs and the various formats I can take to get me out of this mess?

the simplest method is to connect TIVO to a DVD recorder
it will record in real time with little difference in picture quality

  • Burn basic DVD

    Hi,
I have created a very basic DVD in I movie which I want to burn onto DVD with no menus etc. Just so it will play automatically in a domestic DVD player. I can't seem to work out to mover from importing from i movie to DVD and then burning without adding menus etc. Can anyone help please??
    Thanks

    heath,
DVDs need some sort of menu (but you don't have to see it). Using iDVD 6, you can drop your movie in the autostart well (box furthest to the Left in the map view) and set the movie to loop. The movie will continue to loop and you won't see a menu.
What I prefer to do is create a DVD that will autoplay and then bring up a black menu that simply says 'Replay Movie'. See http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/AutostartDVD/autostart.htm for my method.

  • Basic question - trouble connecting iphone to macbook pro

    Hi team,
I have a fairly basic one for you all. I have recently purchased a macbook pro, previously had an ibook G4.
I am connecting my iphone to the new computer and want to sync it to this machine. It is advising that once synced, all info from the old laptop will be cleared and new info added. All music, photos etc are already on the new comp so thats ok but my concern is losing my contacts..
Can anyone tell me if this is the case? I have my iphone synced with outlook contacts and i would assume they will stay on the device but what about original phone contacts including those saved to the sim?
    Help appreciated!

Apple really should give more options in these menus. I've had some "hold your breath and click" moments when using my iPod Touch as well.

  • Basic Actionscript Trouble in CS3

In MX, and in Flash 8 I had no problems with making buttons
and putting some basic actionscipt on it. In CS3 for some reason
when I make a button, look in the properties window and the button
windows there (which tells me I'm on the buttons layer) but when I
go to put the actionscipt in, it doesnt allow it. It says "Cannot
add actionscript because blah blah". It only allows it with the
frame, not the button if that makes any sence. Why is this?

Ok, will try. However I tried that one I think. I changed it
to AS2 (not from the beginning). So basiclly open a new Flash FLA
and how do I make it ONLY go to AS2? Thanks

  • Burning basics question

is it me or does it take an extraordinary amount of time to create and burn a DVD on IDVD
4 hours just to get to the burning process? Any ideas on how to speed uo the process?

Any ideas on how to speed uo the process?
Certainly! Just buy the fastest new computer you can find, with a fast hard drive and and much RAM as you can have installed. See how simple it is?
Most of us have more free time available than big buck$ and simply wait things out.
As I often say in this forum, "Creating a DVD with iDVD requires two things: lots of free hard drive space and lots of patience".

  • MacOS X 10.4: Basic trouble-shooting

Here is a check-list for some basic, unspecific trouble-shooting.
    1. Restart the computer
    2. Deactivate/Uninstall system haxies and third-party extensions (e.g. ASM, Norton AntiVirus, etc.)
    3. Check/fix the filesystem as outlined in this article: Using Disk Utility and fsck for file system maintenance in Mac OS X and Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later to verify or repair disks
    4. Check for at least 5 GB of free space on the boot volume. Mac OS X needs at least that amount in order to run properly.
    5. Repair permissions: Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, choose your HD in the sidebar and click "Repair Permissions"
    6. If one specific application gives you a headache, trash it's preference-file (User/Library/Preferences or in case of system "programs"
    in Library/Preferences).
    7. Create a new user account, and see if the problem persists.
    8. Clear system & user caches with either Tiger Cache Cleaner or Cocktail.
    9. Unplug all USB- and Firewire devices except original Apple mouse and keyboard.
    10. Startup in Safe-mode and see if the problem persists: Starting up in Safe Mode
    11. Repair and replace the directory with DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro 4
    12. Zap PRAM: How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    13. Unplug 3rd Party PCI cards.
    14. Reinstall the latest combo updater.
    15. Check the hard drive for bad blocks (e.g. with Drive 10 or TechTool Pro 4).
    16. Take out 3rd party RAM.
    17. Run the Apple hardware diagnostic CD.
    18. Reset PMU: Resetting Power Management Unit (PMU), Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics/Gigabit Ethernet): Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board, Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)
    19. Reinstall the system from scratch ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614

    4. Check for at least 5 GB of free space on the boot volume. Mac OS X needs at least that amount in order to run properly.
Mac OS X 10.4 will work properly with less free space; about 2 or 3GB is enough. I currently have 4.03GB free on my Mac OS X 10.4 system, which is on a 7.3GB partition.
    6. If one specific application gives you a headache, trash it's preference-file (User/Library/Preferences or in case of system "programs" in Library/Preferences)
The first path should reference the folder in the Finder's sidebar or choosing Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and entering ~/Library/Preferences as the location. A home folder does not need to be in /Users/, and in any case, the file should be left on the desktop temporarily instead of being immediately deleted.
You may also want to mention display issues which are account-specific; these include colors looking washed out, the monitor's colors being inverted, and a black box appearing on random items. These can be turned off from the Universal Access pane of System Preferences.

  • Itunes 7.6 won't let me burn CDs

I just updated iTunes to version 7.6 yesterday. Immediately following this, i tried to burn a CD. It won't recognize any CD as being blank. It says "checking media" at the top of the iTunes window and then it spits the CD back out telling me to insert a blank disk. I have never had a problem with a previous version of iTunes doing this. Has anyone else had this problem?
I also decided to try downloading iTunes 7.5 to go back to a version that worked, but Apple built into the software some stupid thing that won't let me install an older version. The point of me buying a Mac was to avoid stuff like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK -- I've put at least 2 hours into fixing this on my machine, and hopefully I can save you the trouble with my story. And if you don't even want to hear the story, skip down to where I've typed "BOTTOM LINE" in all caps. Go ahead, I won't be hurting deep down inside (o.k. maybe a little).
(As a side note, Apple's tech support is 1-800-APL-CARE... and the front line of defense for them is designed to deal with people who need explanation of what's an mp3 [sarcasm mine], so you might want to get passed up the ladder right away. The next line of experts is actually, well, expert.)
I had the exact same issue -- same discs that worked prior to upgrading, now don't. I'm trying to burn a playlist of ONLY iTunes purchased music. I click "Burn Disc", it ejects my blank disc, and tells me to insert a blank disc.
So I think, great, just great (CRAP!) maybe I can turn back the clock - I go to Windows's "System Restore" feature. The idea is to revert everything back to what it was before I upgraded the iTunes software. (on my machine, it's START-MENU > ALL PROGRAMS > SYSTEM TOOLS > System Restore)
I do - and go to launch the old iTunes - the old version before I upgraded the software. It won't launch, because iTunes_Library.itl was created using a later version. Basically, Apple in its imperial wisdom has burned my bridges for me!
This step may be inconsequential, but I'll include it anyway: thinking if I removed the file from the iTunes folder the older iTunes could launch, I do so. I copy "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library" to a different drive, then delete them. And then, but I get the same can't-launch-because-of-library error, I copy them right back. (who knows, maybe that was important)
Eh. At this point is when I start calling tech support, getting put on hold, having to repeat that the problem is not the blank discs, is not the playlist, etc.
But in the meantime I decide that this old version of iTunes is worthless to me now, so I might as well run the iTunesSetup file again (the one I "saved to disk" when upgrading). I do run it, it runs, and by now I'm back on the phone with one of the actual experts.
I walk him through my problem - but now it isn't a problem. I get a new and different error message: I'm not authorized to burn these songs. Which means I just need to authorize the computer, which iTunes prompts me to do, which then lets me play, burn, basically if you can get to see that, you're home free.
    BOTTOM LINE
If you're having this exact problem, and running XP, you might have success IF:
    (1) Run System Restore, to restore to before the iTunes upgrade
((1.5) POSSIBLY move "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library" out of that folder, then back in. I did, but it seems irrelevant.)
    (2) Run the iTunesSetup application again.
And at that point, if you were me, you would be back on track.
If this helps, donations in lieu of flowers to Smile Train dot org. I mean, come on, to be born funny-looking, it's just not fair.
And as long as I'm typing why not pass judgment on the individual Apple employees I spoke with...
JASON and JOANNE - are awesome people, and if I had a party they'd totally be invited. Nerdy-cool. You guys both rock.
ERIC was a schmuck who seemed incapable of understanding my problem, making me repeat myself slow and loud, because maybe he's hard of hearing. Schmuck for putting me on hold for a half-hour then dumping the call (intentional?) and killing off my willingness to give Apple thousands of dollars over the course of my life.
CHRIS seemed like a good guy, not hugely helpful to tell me I'm 440 days out of warranty when my problem has already been accepted, but was able to pull through and put me to the second cool person I spoke with.
DONNA is just too nice to be condemned to deal with people's phone-in frustrated problems. Great for that reason, so nice, may she not go crazy on account of work.
    That's it, good luck.

  • How do I burn a data disc of my camcorder movies that can play on an HP?

Very frustrated, first I have no iDVD on my new Mac.  Very disappointing.  So now, I have my home movies on the Mac and need to burn them off to a disc, when I burn to a data disc, it wont play on another computer at all.  Please help so that I can share my videos with others????

you could try using "Burn" which I think is freeware and will burn basic DVD video discs. Otherwise, you're gonna have to buy something. Yeah, mac's gonna take some gettin' used to, likewise, if I was to try and use a PC, it'd take some getting used to as well. iPhoto might help you with your photos and stuff and it may be included. You may be able to use right click on the movie and burn it to a disc. Dunno if it'll play back on a PC, though... if you had a cloud account or some storage space online you could do it that way, but, enough

  • MacBook 10.6.7. is having trouble connecting to my wireless network.

    Hi all~
I am basically having trouble with my wireless connection. I know I have  a functioning connection because my girlfriend is able to connect and surf just fine. However, I try to log on and get the usual error messages. I've tried the network diagnostic and the setup assistant to no avail. They tell me to contact my ISP, but my ISP can't find a problem. Any advice out there? Has my airport gone crazy....is this a hardware issue??

iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • HELP: Spent hours/days trying to fix transcoding error in DVD burn

I'm at my wit's end. Been 'round and 'round online help, troubleshooting randomly, etc.  After my movie is edited in Premiere Elements 3.0 I try to burn it in Create DVD.  Each time I try I get transcoding error at 31.69% and the message that Adobe has failed to return a video frame.  I've gone over the rendered video and especially at about the 34-minute mark but cannot find problem.
I took original footage in Flip camera, converted the file to .wmv with Prism Video Converter, as I always do, and the first version of this movie burned with no trouble.  I came back and added a clip, also in .wmv format, and now it won't burn.  Seriously, I'm going crazy and would love to be able to chat by phone so someone can walk me through it.  This video is for a workshop that I lead and people are waiting for it.
    Can anyone help me?
    Nora

Well, gentlemen, I awoke this morning to the same error in the same spot.
So I combed the entire timeline again and did actually find and fix a couple of gaps which I'd somehow overlooked the first two times (can't imagine how that happened).  Burned it again and same error, same place.  Really, this is killing me.
So all I need now is to know how to successfully export/burn it to a folder or other media.  Then maybe I can re-load it into Adobe or burn directly to DVD from remote place.  I'm trying now to burn it to 8.(?)G folder because when I tried burning it to 4.7G folder it didn't work.
Any other suggestions for getting this movie onto another form of media so I can go from there?
    Thank you

Any suggestions on how to get Simply accounting 2012 to run in Paralles 7.  On setup simply is encounters and error and shuts down.

AngSteve... Unfortunately, you're not likely to get a solution here.  You're basically having trouble installing a Windows application in Windows.  It's not likely a Parallels issue, but there's no way to say for sure.  I would suggest you try getting support from Sage:

  • Want to record edit and burn dvds of videos from canon camcorder what is the best way

what is the easiest way to transfer recordings from my canon camcorder hd to dvds after editing. The new imovie does not have idvd on it to burn dvds.

I'm assuming you're editing in iMovie? If you still have an older retail version of iLife, you can use that to install iDVD - I am using it with mavericks. Or, the retail 09 and 11 iLife disks are still available at some online resellers. The best thing out there still is iDVD with its customizable menus, themes, etc. However, there are other options for just burning: one good ons is Roxio Toast; then there is the free app Burn (basic I'm told, but works). Or google for others. Personally, I'd get iDVD.
The new iMovie (or the older versions) did not have iDVD built in - it's just a link to the iDVD application. FWIW, I prefer to use the older iMovie versions because they have more quality options to choose from when exporting. With the new iMovie, choose to export to file and choose your recording size and then you can drag that file into a burning app (or iDVD if you get it).

I have a LG external dvd burner...everything worked great with my burner (10.3.9 <) prior to installing Tiger and it's updates.
My burner is having trouble in Tiger reading previous burned discs and transfering them over to my emac...also burning with Toast (v7) is now a problem...most burns do not finish.
I have now gone back to 10.3.9 and the burner works normal!
