Burning BluRay DVD on a Mac

I just installed PRE 9.0.  Is it possible to burn a BluRay DVD on a DVD-R media using PRE 9?  In other words, can you burn AVCHD discs using PRE 9?  This would be an attractive feature to have rather than investing in a BD burner.  Apparently Toast 10 can do this.

Thank you all - this has been helpful.
Reading the DVD FAQ to look for the answer to my question would have been like trying to kill an ant with a cannon.   It's a great FAQ, so thanks for the pointer, but I'll have to save that for later.
Here's what I am taking away:
- DVD players can not play Hi-Def video (not surprising, and I wasn't expecting that to be the case)
- Consumer set-top Blu-Ray players can play AVCHD discs (I don't know if all of them do, but I know my Samsung does)
- It is possible to create AVCHD disc on DVD-R media (~20 minute play time) and that disc will play on set-top Blu-Ray player
- PRE-9 can not create such a disc
- Encore CS5 can create such a disc
One last question, in case anyone knows: can I use DVD+R DL media and get double the play time?  Would a DL AVCHD disc work?
I would have preferred to create the disc in PRE9 -- much easier to use.  I'll now turn my attention to learning Encore instead.

  • Problems burning a dvd backup in Mac OS X tiger

hi I have some problems to burn a dvd in my mac, when its burning the dvd for some reason the system reboots I'm trying burning with the finder and the computer its a G5 have an OS X tiger 10.4.11 running in an Intel processor box, with two user accounts, the admin and an other one who's have no admin permission I m login into this account when I tried to burn the dvd I dont know if the permission have something about because with the admin account it works great
so thats my problem if you have an Idea please help me guys
    thanks for your time

it's a DVD+R media disc. In Finder I can see the
files on the disc, there's a folder Audio_TS and
VIdeo_TS. There's .VOB, .IFO, .BUP files in the
Video_TS folder and there are no files in the
    Audio_TS folder.
The folders and files sound correct (the Audio_TS folder should be empty).
Try launching Apple's DVD Player application in the Application Folder. It should give you the option to open a DVD (I think that's what the new version of Player says - the old version used to say to open the VIDEO_TS Folder)

  • What do I need to burn a dvd if my mac says it doesnt support SuperDrive

I have a Mac OS X. When i open iDvd it says:
Your Machintosh does not have a supported SuperDrive. Please note that while you will be able to work with iDvd projects you will not be able to burn a DVD disc.
I checked under About this Mac and under CD-Write it only says -R, -RW
I made a movie on iMovie and therefore the only way to get it on a dvd would be through iDVD...right?
So what do I do now? Do I have to buy something? How much will it cost?

If your mac doesn't have an internal burner you can still use an external S-Drive/burner (via firewire) and it should work fine. Lacie makes ext. fw S-Drives for macs or you can make your own like I did with a pioneer 110 or 111 and a standard FW 400/800 enclosure:

  • Burn Audio DVD on 2nd Mac (share burner?)

    Hi,
Is there a quick/painless way to copy iTunes library between Macs ....
or, better still, to share a second Mac's DVD burner?
I have my entire 6G audio library on my Mac Mini (which is the central hub in my multi-computer wireless household; as there is far less chance of it being lost or stolen than my laptops).
I want to burn a 4.7G playlist onto a DVD that I can then play in my car (which is MP3 compatible. This way I can also select/play the songs using my SatNav menu. Better option than using iPod).
The problem is that my Mac Mini only has a CD burner; but my MacBook Pro has a Super Drive. So, somehow I need to temporarily get 4.7Gs worth of music between computers.
I have shared my library but then the burning option is disabled on my MacBook Pro - even though all my iTunes libraries are logged in with the same id, even though they are all on a local network.
I tried Blue Coconut - but it just hangs saying 'Please Wait' (again, despite it being on a local 54Mb wireless network).
    Any easy options?

Transferring 4.7 GB on my wireless network doesn't take long at all. If it's too slow in your case, then you could power off the Mac Mini and connect it via a FireWire cable (6-pin to 6-pin) to your MacBook Pro. Then power on the Mac Mini while depressing the T key on the Mac Mini's keyboard. The entire Mac Mini hard drive should now mount as a FireWire hard drive on the MacBook Pro, and you can you can burn the DVD project "locally."
When you're finished with the project, be sure to eject (unmount) the Mac Mini by dragging its FireWire hard drive icon to the Trash, then power down the Mac Mini and disconnect the FireWire cable from both computers.

  • Burned a dvd, works on mac not on pc

I burned a dvd. originally a .mov file. but pc based media players are not reading it as a dvd.
I didnt do anything special to the DVD. I made it as basic as it gets. I need to burn something today that can play in anything without a problem, whether its windows media player or the appl edvd player or a real dvd player for a tv.
Thanks so much. I also have several different file conversion softwares that I can use if starting with .mov is a bad idea.

What codec are you using for your .mov? Did you just Export a QuickTime Movie from FCP, or did you change the codec used?
All video DVDs are SD resolution.
If quality if a concern, then you can do one of two things. Change the resolution in FCP by creating a new Sequence at SD resolution and nesting your original Sequence into it. You then have to scale down and render the file. Then you Export a QuickTime Movie. Bring that into DVD SP, or better yet bring that into Compressor and create a MPEG-2 of the video and a AC3 of the audio and bring those into DVD SP.
Or you Export a QuickTime Movie from FCP at HD resolution, bring that into Compressor. Using the setting Best Quality 90 minutes, create a new setting that is the same but with Frame Controls on. Also create a new setting for Dolby 2.0 with the Dialog Normalization set to -31 and the Compression Preset set to None. Bring those files into DVD SP.

    Can anyone help
    Thanks

Unfortunately your drive has *probably* failed. You can try a cleaning disc, sometimes thst can help. First though try resetting the smc and pram.
To reset the smc on Desktop Macs
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • I need to know what software i need to burn a dvd from my videos

Is there software to burn dvd's from my videos to play on my blueray

If your BluRay player also plays SD video DVDs you will be fine if you use iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

If you want to burn BluRay DVDs you will need Roxio Toast.

  • Burning bluray disks on Macbook Pro 17"

I have a 1080p camcorder and I wanted to burn my movies on a bluray disc so I was just wondering is there any way to play and burn bluray discs on a mac book pro 17". I tried to find some external drives and I found this two external drives:
    http://fastmac.com/blurayext

so I does any one know, will they work with my mid 2010 Mac book pro 17", I have both windows and Mac OS X installed on it...

Toast can be used to burn blueray disks. http://eshop.macsales.com/articles/howto-burn-bluray-toast
This external blueray burner works on mac with toast. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MRF8BDSD12X/
fastmac should be able to tell you if their burner works with toast.
If your goal is just to play your home movies on your HD TV; I would suggest getting an apple tv instead.

One thing you can do is to play the DVD in your Mac using DVD Player instead of iTunes, and then, turn on AirPlay Mirroring to stream your computer's display to your Apple TV > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, use a third-party app like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com This is the only option, because the Apple TV isn't compatible with discs
Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.
VLC player is believed to work.

"naturally", you have to go out and get something that'll let you do that
