Burning CDs doesn't work?

Burn settings are on Audio/max speed possible, with iTunes 8 for Windows. Using TDK CD-R discs. Verified that the CD device both reads & writes using other media and CDs. iTunes command to Burn Disc works fine, full disc burns, is "finished." But then -- the new CD won't play anywhere -- not in Windows Media, not on another CD player. It doesn't even show as having anything on it in Windows Explorer, and a straight CD player can't find any tracks. It plays just fine in iTunes, though, and shows all the tracks. Anybody?

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
Might try Burn.app...

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...

Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Can't read or burn CDs, but DVDs work just fine (reading, burning, ripping)

This isn't a new problem for my computer, its an issue thats been there since I got it (March 2008), I just haven't had it fixed yet.
My computer won't play or rip any cds (usually doesn't mount them, just spits them out) Also has trouble burning cds, but I have successfully burned a few.
Never had any problem mounting, playing, ripping, or burning DVDs though.
Anyone know of a way to fix this without taking it into an apple store?
And if I do take it in, how long would it take them to fix it?

I took it to the apple store, they did a test to see if it was a hardware or software issue, determined it was a hardware issue and replaced the optical drive.

  • Preview of Ken Burns effect doesn't work with some pictures

I just recently installed a new graphics card (ATI Radeon 7500) on my Sawtooth, 1.2 GHz, so I could utilize the Ken Burns effect in imovie HD. It works but only partly. It works great but with some pictures the preview pane doesn't show the photo. What I see is a what looks like bad reception on an old TV (fuzzies and the picture is distorted so bad you can't even make it out). With other pictures the preview shows up fine. I'm sure I've loaded the drivers. What else can I do?

    Hi Tonyy13.
I am presenting the same problem. I can set the Ken Burns' effect while I am with the pictures before placing them in the Clip or Timeframe viewer. After placing them there, if I try to edit the picture (either by right clicking and choosing -edit picture or by control clicking and doing the same, I ended up with a black background. If you change the setting in this black ackground and update this changes they will be effective. So, you can change the slide duration, and everything in the sliders but without an image.
I was running System 10.3.9 and I thought this was the reason. Today, I went and bought Tiger but it didn't sove the problem. I do believe it is a bug in the program. According to Apple's Help and David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" this shouldn't happen.
If you solve this problem reply to this posting. If I did I will reply to your posting. Thank You.

  • Burned CDs don't work on some computers

The CDs I burn on my G5's Superdrive work fine on this computer and my son's powerbook and a newer flat-screen iMac... but sometimes other older Macs refuse to recognize that they contain information and return the standard "unrecognizable/need to format" error. I have noticed this problem occurs mostly with older (original thru indigo) iMacs or 8600/9600 PowerMacs running OS 8 or OS 9. These problem machines read other discs fine, but consistently have trouble with the discs I burn.
Is there something I can do to increase the reliability of my cd's with these older systems?

@Graphic Designer: Well, the drive was recently replaced (big woots to AppleCare), has been lightly used since the replacement, and to all appearances, is functioning perfectly. I don't believe a faulty drive is the problem.
@DaddyPaycheck: This has got to be the answer. This is something I hadn't thought of and seems highly likely. The older machines do indeed predate the higher capacity medium.
Can anyone confirm that those older drives will not read new high capacity CD's? Is there any way to get around this via disk image manipulation or something? Can you even buy the old 650 mb blanks any more?

  • Burn iso doesn't work.

    Hi,
I did download the 4 files iso.zip for me to upgrade from solaris 9 to solaris 10. I am using nero to burn. Before burning I did unzip them. whenever I unzip, it creates a file like xxx.iso.iso. I did put it into my 220R sparc machine and keeps on me sending a message like bad magic number. I did download twice, and burned twice also. Anybody has any ideas ? when I burned I used the create a bootable disk, I boot the machine as boot cdrom . I appreciate any help. thanks .
    ./tunin/.

You never know what a GUI interface does, and wat each option means. Perhaps your burning software goes wrong.
For example, you don't have to specify a boootable CD for a CD-Image, because "image" means what it says - a complete image of CD with all the boot sectors, and alike.
You already have an ISO image. Why use graphics software anyway? Just put the image as is onto a CD.
This is doe easily with a text mode command cdrw.
It is more complex but more precise.
Run man cdrw to read how to use it.
Please report back of any luck

  • CD looks like it burns but doesn't work

I'm just upgraded to Itunes 11.4.0.18.  I put a free podcast in a playlist, used blank CD-R, did the Burn to Disk, Audio CD.  When I start it, it goes through the whole process, it counts down, the CD drive makes its little noises, and finalizes the disc.  It then goes to the screen with the CD and shows that the podcast is on it under the Devices area.  However, when I try to play it, it freezes up, and when I eject the CD from my laptop and try to play it in my car, it errors out.  I've tried it a bunch of times with different podcasts.  I never get an error message or anything.  The weird thing is, if I take the exact same CD that I just did that process on and put it in Itunes again, it will say it's a blank CD again even though there was something on it.  It will even let me do the process again on the same CD.

I note from your system details aside User String ending in FBSMTWB that presumably indicates FastBrowser Toolbar software is installed. That must be a prime suspect. Try disabling or uninstalling that software.
You will probably have to identify the software and remove it using Windows XP control panel. See this answer from ''SafeBrowser'' [/questions/878922#answer-250766] mentioning
    * ''Open the Windows XP Control Panel and remove/uninstall "Fast Browser search protection" and "Fast Browser Search" (MyWebTatoo) ''
N.B. it is conceivable that names of such software change slightly, depending on when and how it was installed.

  • Windows Burned CDs not readable

Can someone help me figure out why my Burned CDs won't work on my mac if they were burned with Nero 6 for Windows (I burned several CDs on my PC and when they are inserted in my iBook, three minutes later, they get ejected!) I am wondering how I can fix this, because I also seem to have a problem being able to burn CDs from the finder as well (blank CDs don't show up in the finder, and disk utility says that I am unable to burn CDs, but I have been able to burn them 2 months ago!) please help me out if you know what is going on! I am really frustrated about this!

    Welcome to Discussions!
Awhile back, there was an issue with the combo drives that were shipped in the iBook G4's, so it is possible that your experiencing the same failure. Have you tried using CDs that have been burned on a different PC? Will the drive read "normal" CDs? (store-bought music, or retail game CDs) Can you boot off of the OS X install CDs that came with your iBook? If you can boot off the OS X CD, try running Apple Hardware Test. If that comes back ok, run disk first aid, and repair permissions (repair permissions 2-3x in a row). If none of that works, call Apple Support. If you were able to boot off the Mac OS X CD, you might try backing up all pertnint info onto your external HD, and reinstall the System Software.

Hello all you super smart people! Ok, I downloaded an ISO file. Now I want to run the program that is inside that cute little file. So, I have done every thing I can think of to get that puppy to go. I have burned as image in toast...I have tried to convert to master cd in disk utilities...wasted about a dozen cd's. But every time I think I have it burned all nice and pretty, I put the disk in and low and behold the disk is not readable by my mac...can't even get the PC to read it. However, I did burn one disk that I could not run on mac but could open all the zillions of files on the PC...but I want the program to run:-( Please all you nice little cumputer geeks out there, help me. I did read somewhere that I could go into the terminal and paste in some code and that would change the ISO image into a DMG image. But the last time I messed with my terminal I just about killed my computer...actually did kill it, but fixed it:-) please help with step by step. Thanks so very very much!!

  • I can no longer burn CDs  - "may be incompatible with this disc burner, try slower speed, try another make of disc"  Still doesn't work

I can no longer burn CDs  - "may be incompatible with this disc burner, try a slower speed, try another make of disc"  Tried that, still doesn't work.

Try a free burning utility which allows you to turn off the laser for test burning (so you don't waste media).  Try burning a test CD outside of iTunes.  If it works it's iTunes. If it doesn't work it could be computer software or hardware but then we know how to proceed.

  • CD burner doesn't work

I've just tried to burn two CDs, in the way I have always done; buy opening 2 Finder windows, & copying the album across to the window with the CD in it, & clicking 'Burn', Suddenly this doesn't work; I get a CD which shows wierd letters in the window of my CD player - like 'AO 1' - & nothing plays. Does anyone have any ideas? I absolutely hate burning Cds via iTunes, as it is completely stupid - you cannot burn directly from albums; you have to move the album to a pointless 'playlist' first (which I will never play as I will always play the original album - doh).

    hi there-
the first thing i would do is go to utilities > disk utility and repair permissions. then boot to the install disk and repair the disk. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if it still isn't working, then try doing the combo update for 10.4.8 available here. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ good luck. • I bought a used PowerMacPC G5. I can burn and read DVDs, but I can't read or burn CDs. The CDs are not even recognized. After the drive searches for a while, the CD is ejected without any error messages. The CDs work okay on my iMac.

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks, Jack
