Burning cds - unreadable files

I burned CDs yesterday in Snow Leopard (right mouseclick - burning objects on CD/DVD) but ALL the files (music) have been unreadable in two different DVD/CD players. I used differemt CDs. After having tried the same in Windows 7 with Nero 10 (free version, copying CDs) I concluded that the CDs haven't been the problem.
Can you explain to me why those files cannot be read being burned in Snow Leopard?
I created DVDs via iDVD in Snow Leopard and there wasn't one DVD that got corrupt!
So how to create CDs in Snow Leopard that can be read everywhere (I use only CD-R for that reason because older players might not be able to play the music files.
I was upset that the CD burner caused a loud noise in Windows 7 Nero - sometimes, sometimes it disappeared. This noise did not appear on the same day burning DVDs with iDVD. How long should I use this part of my MBP? Not to many hours a day?
Burning the last CD today in Nero 10 the noise did not appear any more ... (but all CDs are o.k.!)
It takes quite a long time burning CDs with Nero 10 this way and I got impatient.
Are there often problems burning CDs 24 or 48 (with different hardware)?
Which external burner would you promote to create Blurays/DVDs/CDs on a MBP, Snow Leopard, i5, 17 (firewire 800/esata/USB 2)?
Now I save my data myself on external hard drives but people want to have selfmade movies and see that it might be too complicated for them to download the data from the internet so I send to them DVDs.

I did not know thant I can create only a data CD in Finder and not a music CD.
Ah! Me either. The only thing I use iTunes for is to back up my iPad to the Mac. I'm not even sure how you would go about getting DRM protected music burned as an audio CD.

Correct. Dragging the MP3s into iTunes adds them to your iTunes library. Once they are in your library, you can add them to a playlist. When you have your playlist in the right sequence, click on File > Burn Playlist to Disc.

I am trying to burn CDs to an external hard drive to conserve space on our laptop. When I change the file location it says the destination folder on the external drive is invalid. Am I missing a step?

It does, but that's definitely strange.  Try showing all hidden files and folders on your Mac to see if that helps.
To do this, head to Applications -> Utilties -> Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE -> Press Enter
    killall Finder -> Press Enter
Then navigate out to your iPod again via the Finder. Any luck now?

  • File permissions on burned CDs and DVDs

When I burn CDs and DVDs, I often find that the permissions are set such that they are only readable by me. This causes a problem when I go to a Linux machine (or presumably another Mac) with a different login ID. (Interestingly, windows ignores these permissions.) If I remember, I can go in and change all the permissions through the Finder (or Terminal) before burning the CD, but I often forget. Is there a way in the burn process to make a disc universally readable?
    Thanks,

Haven't tried scanning the discs since I myself don't have access to a Windows machine. I've tried various brands of discs but to no avail; one thing I've noticed though is that DVD+R discs seem to function every now and then but things with CDs and DVD-Rs aren't the same.
Well, it's only 10 extra minutes to make the image and burn it so maybe I'll have to cope with it.

  • Problem burning CDs

I use a peripheral La Cie burner for backups from my iMac.Following is a synopsis of a message I sent to La Cie tech support.
"I have been successfully burning data CDs, both files and
photos, for some time. I always click burn disk not burn session and it records at 52X. The drive spins very repidly and the session is completed in reasonably short time. Now the drive spins slowly, sporidacally starts and stops, and finally I get ther following message:
    The drive reeported an error
    Sense keymedium error
    Sense code0x73, 0x03
    The disk is unreadable"
    This was their response:
"Frequently sensekey medium errors say what they mean. Usually, it's the brand of media that the drive isn't doing too well with. We suggest Verbatim, Sony and TDK brand blank media.
Sometimes, a drive's lens is dirty and responsible for medium errors also. An optical drive cleaning kit, available at most computer hardware retailers, would also be worthwhile to try".
IMO, I doubt the problem is the disks as they are the same brand, from the same box which has been successful in the past. Any opinions on the dirty lens theory?
One other major bit of info - my memory is about 75% full, largely due to a large number of photos which is why I want to burn backups and then dump the pix. Could the memory overload be a clue? If it is I am in a catch 22
    Suggestions will be very welcome

Same problems here. I have 2 different computers and tries 2 different CD-Rs and I found out that it has soemthing to do with the new "Protected AAC audio file" format.
Open iTunes, click on music, on the listing side of the screen right click on name, and then click on "kind".
I bet you can't burn anything with the "Protected AAC audio file."
No solutions yet, so just don't buy anything else from iTunes for now.

    Thanks for any help

Thanks for the quick response I went to the device manager and did what you asked and no change in performance, but in the drop-down of the DVD/CD Rom Drive the next file? of HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ATA DEVICE on the icon there is a pyramid with the yellow exclamation point inside??. I've tried to update the drivers but Microsoft says that they are up to date. It seems that my Windows Media Player does not know or recognize that I have an internal CD burner because on the side box where you are to drag songs to burn, the message of "Connect a burner and restart the player". As you can tell I am not very computer literate so any help will be greatly appreciated. How can I tell if the CD/DVD player is just broken?? Thanks so much.

  • Burned CDs no longer play on imac G5 - commercial CDs play okay

My imac G5 is no longer recognizing any previously burned CDs. When I inset the CD I get "You've inserted a blank CD. Turn burn items on the CD....." etc. The CDs play okay in my CD player, just not on the imac.
The imac still recognizes and plays commercial CDs and CD ROMS.
I updated to iTunes+ two days ago. Since then I have been getting occasional "You're attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I have burned several CDs that also play on my CD player but will not play on the imac once the disc is injected and reinserted into the imac.
I have run the utilities disc and done repair file permissions. I have run the repair utility and get a "No problems found" result. I have also run a memorex cd cleaner disc.
I would suspect a hardware problem except it is only the discs I have burned that I get the "blank cd" notification.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? This is driving me nuts!!!!
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Phil

iMacs are notoriously picky about CDs and DVDs. I suggest you post to the iTunes forum, they are more likely to have experience with this sort of problem: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=789
although I looked through the old posts there and couldn't find an exact duplicate of your problem.
If you find a solution, please let us know,

  • Unable to burn CDs with music downloaded from iTunes store

It seems that quite a few people have been having problems burning CDs using iTunes 5 and 6, but I'd like to know how many people are experiencing the same problem that I am. iTunes will not burn any of my playlists featuring tracks downloaded from the iTunes store. Playlists free of iTunes downloads, whether they contain tracks I've imported from CD or other MP3 files, will burn fine. If I try to burn a playlist that features tracks purchased from the iTunes store, iTunes simply freezes up and I have to close it down with the Task Manager.
I've spoken the the Apple support staff in the UK, and they've advised me to try closing down my anti-virus software and removing other music download programs. I've done both of these, but no luck. I have a case number but before I call them back, I'd like to know how many other iTunes users have had the same problem, and whether they've found a solution.

I have that EXACT same problem! I have no idea what to do though, but it is very mucho frustrating. Let me know if you find out anything, and I will do the same.

  • Itunes 7.3.1 freezes when burning cds

I just downloaded Itunes 7.3.1. It freezes whenever I try to burn cds. It doesn't even get to the burn screen; I click "burn" and everything jams. When I hit "control ALT delete" and look at the itunes program, it is suddenly taking up a lot of memory (75,000 K).
This happens regardless of whether I hit "burn" in the file menu or on the bottom of the screen. It also happens when I try to back up my library.
    Any suggestions?

I have the same issue.  I took it the genius bar and called talked to tier 2 phone support. They have standard thing where you uninstall all apple software in a certain order and then reinstall 64bit itunes.  That did nothing (tried it 4 times).
I've gotten two clues so far.
One is that at the store if I plug someone else's iphone 4 in then itunes acts the same way. So it is not the phone. Two is tier 2 phone support told me to try syncing it with a fresh user account (an admin one). I did that and itunes was just fine, it did not freeze.
So there appears to be some conflict with the software, music files, whatever that is on my current user account (also an admin account).  I ran virus and malware detectors and found nothing.  Now I'm going to try putting my music, movies, apps, etc in the new user account and see if the phone will sync then.
I know its not much but thats where I'm at. I hope it helps.

  • ITunes crashing when burning CDs, CDs won't mount

Intermittently, but becoming more frequent, I have been having problems burning CDs.  I am burning my own recordings, so there is no copyright problem.  When I burn the CD in iTunes, everything seems to go OK at first.  Afterward, it mounts the disk image in iTunes and I try to play it.  This usually causes iTunes to go to the spinning beachball indefinitely.  I have to force quit iTunes to get it to stop.  When I relaunch iTunes, the disk does not appear in it.  Nor does it appear in Finder.  Disk utility can see it, but I can't do anything there besides eject it.  If I eject the disk and reinsert it, it still doesn't mount, although it will cause iTunes to launch.  I am wondering if this is a problem with iTunes or if it could be a sign that my optical drive is problematic.
I am using the setup below. iTunes is up-to-date.

    Hello Hoover411,
It sounds as though you are experiencing freezes with iTunes, and complications with your optical media. I have located an article that may help you with this situation. The article includes a number of troubleshooting steps for apps that freeze or quit:
OS X Yosemite: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
There are several suggestions to try.
If the app is frozen, force quit the app. Click the app’s window, then choose Apple menu > Force Quit. You can also press Option-Command (⌘)-Esc, select the app, then click Force Quit.
When you force an app to quit, you may lose unsaved changes.
If the app quit, reopen it by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears.
Restart your Mac. For more information, see Restart your Mac.
Read the app’s documentation to check if it’s compatible with your version of OS X.
Open another file in the app. There may be a problem with the original file.
Check for updates to your software.
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of OS X.
Uninstall any app plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers.
If you recently updated the app or OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you installed may no longer be compatible.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These tools can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
Restart your Mac in safe mode. For more information, see Restart your Mac in safe mode.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Unreadable files

My iphotos do not seem to be indexed in Finder. When I try to upload a photo from the library to a website I can only view indexed titled photos in Photo Booth. They will be listed as pic 1 jpg pic 2 jpg etc. but although I have plenty of visable pictures in iphoto they don't show up listed in finder. Only the name "iphoto library" appears. Double clicking on that does not show me indexed jpgs of my photos. Instead it opens iPhoto and loads the photos. Then a window drops down and says: Unreadable files: 1 The following files could not be imported. They may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data".
huh? I've been editing and burning the photos to DVD's with no problem although sometimes people can't open them when I send them in e-mail. can anyone help?

My iphotos do not seem to be indexed in Finder.<<<</div>
Attempting to understand the iPhoto library is comparable to attempting long division with Roman numerals.
STAY OUT OF THE LIBRARY UNLESS YOU ENJOY GRIEF. THE FOLLOWING IS COPIED FROM AN iPHOTO "HELP" SCREEN.
IMPORTANT: If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise touch files or folders within this folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in the iPhoto application. The files within this folder should only be manipulated by a customer care representative. It is a good idea, however, to routinely back up this entire folder to a CD or external hard disk so you have a copy in case your photos become lost or corrupted for any reason.

  • Burning CDs in Leopard

Hey all, I just upgraded my old PowerPC G5 to Leopard. It's running smoothly but I am having what might be the dumbest problem. Whenever I try and burn CDs (files, not music), if I drag a file into the CD window, or copy and paste a file into the CD window, it makes them shortcuts, and not the actual file.
I never had this problem before I upgraded and I can't figure out a way around it. Any thoughts?
    Thanks all!

Burn folders were new with 10.4 (did you go from 10.3 right to 10.5?) That's how they work; by making aliases until you are ready to burn. After your aliases are all made, just burn the CD and the files will be burned correctly.
It took me a while to get used to the new way of doing things. I have to admit I liked the old way better too.
