Burning Data DVD's

When I try to create and use a burn folder to store a collection of jpg's all I can add are alias', not the pictures themselves. This function works just fine on the Mac Pro running Tiger but I can't drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste in Leopard. How do I fix this?

Go to Mac Help and enter burning data dvds in the question box: the following comes up but unless you go to the Mac Help site, the links below will not forward.
About burning your own CDs or DVDs
You can burn files to a CD or DVD, and then use that disc as a backup, send it to friends, or copy those files to another machine. Mac OS X burns discs that can also be used on Windows computers and other types of computers.
Burning a disc quickly
You can burn a disc by dragging files to it and then clicking the Burn button.

Burning the same files to discs multiple times
You can create multiple discs with the same collection of files by creating a burn folder and then burning that folder to a disc as many times as you want. For example, you can create a burn folder with data files that you frequently back up or with video files that you want to create several copies of to share with several people.

My previously burned data DVD's are now coming up as "untitled"  and blank. However, my dvd will read a movie DVD. These discs are perfectly clean of smudges/scratches. These discs open fine on my other iMac.
The DVD will read data and music cds.  Why would it not read all my DVD-r back up discs? Help, please.

Maybe this has something to do with the DVDs? These are stored stacked inside a plastic container in a cabinet.
I am leaning more in the area of a defective SuperDrive or at leaset in the Superdrive firmware? Something set this off, but I have not updated any software since this happened.

  • Burn data dvd no longer works since 9.0.1 or 9.0

Since the latest iTunes update, at least 9.0 or 9.0.1, I am unable to burn backup DVD data disks which is my "offsite" backup method besides using Time Machine on an accessory drive. The DVD drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109: Firmware Revision: 1.58. I get error messages, did not save the text, but usually read/write errors, "sense" issues usually cited after several attempts. However, seems to work fine burning from Toast and fine for burning iTunes Audio CDRW disks. Anyone else experience this? I see several having problems recently burning CD's from iTunes, but not this specific issue. I know it's nearly time to update my system to Intel, but it would be nice to hold on a little longer...I did try to force lower speed DVD writes with no help. Thanks...

  • Since 10.4.4 (10.4.5) - i can not burn Data-DVDs anymore...

    System: iMac G4, 1GHz, 1GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.5, 4x SuperDrive (SONY DVD RW DW-U10A)
    Dear Apple Support,
since Mac OS X 10.4.4 (same with 10.4.5) i can not burn a Data DVD-RW anymore. It is so annoying. I want to burn my backup on a DVD-RW with the Burn Folders in Mac OS X. it is not possible.
The Finder burn dialog hangs at the "ending burning process". It is so annoying.
It's not possible to erase this "half burned" DVD-RW too! So I have here a lot of destroyed DVD-RWs around me...
The burning of DVD-RWs is a problem since 10.4.0 here on my machine. With 10.4.3 it was half o.k. ... But since 10.4.4 (10.4.5) nothing works anymore.
Your product "Mac OS X Tiger" is nearly one year in the market. And burning a Data-DVD is not a exotical thing. It is a essential feature of a Operating System today. So what are you doing in your Test-Labs?
I am sitting here since 1 year with an Operating System from Apple an it doesn't works in the essential features.
Whats about your slogan "It just works"?
What happens with the quality of Apple?
Under 10.3.9 Panther i can burn everything. It absolutly no problem there.
So i don't understand what are you doing with Tiger?
    It's so annoying!
    Regards
    Roessner

I've got exactely the same problem and I have no solution at the moment.

  • Choppy playback after burning data dvd in toast

Hi Ive just finished burning a copy of various short clips which I exported as a quicktime files from FCP onto my desktop then saved them as quicktime mov. through QT player which was successful enough.I then burned a copy of this QT movie in toast as a data dvd compatible for Mac & PC viewing. When I played the dvd in QT 7.4.5 the playback was choppy but the sound was fine. I then played the same disc on my G5 desktop running panther and QT 7.4.1 and it was absolutely fine.Is this process rather a roundabout way of doing things ? and what could be causing this choppy playback on my laptop?

Data DVD's and regular movie DVD are not read in the same way. A regular movie that is being read by your DVD player app is being stream too...and the player is set up to read from a DVD that way.
On the other hand a data DVD the data is just setting there...The DVD player can't send the video to Quicktime fast enough to play smoothly. That's why you need to copy the data DVD to the hard drive.
It would be if you had a 1gig image on a DVD and tried to edit it with Photoshop from the DVD. Photoshop would constantly bog down trying to read from the DVD while editing the image. Same if you had video files on a DVD tried and to it them from a editing app. The editing app not getting the data fast enough making editing very slow. Sometimes the program that's trying to read the from the DVD will freeze or crash. Best to copy the data from the DVD to the hard drive.

  • How burn data DVD in Win XP?

Hi, I'm wondering how I can burn a data DVD on the superdrive in Win XP? It seems the OS only recognizes the drive as a CD read/write.
    -Michael

    Hi Michael,
have a look at DeepBurner Free http://www.deepburner.com/
XP has sometimes the tendency to not show a DVD-Burner as a DVD-Burner but as a CD-Burner only.
However with the a.m. program you should be able to burn DVDs.

  • Sat M30X: Burning data DVD's to HDD

I have a Satellite M30x and have recently tried to burn a data DVD to free some space on a crowded HDD.
Windows cannot seem to perform this task and unfortunately Toshiba have not installed/supplied the software to do it either.
The Nero burning rom that was supplied only seems able to burn CD's and even then, it continually saves the files without actually burning them!!!
    Help!

    Hello
As far as I know your unit should have super-multi drive that can burn all formats. If the unit is preinstalled with recovery media you will find a application called Record Now!. You can use it for data burning but Nero is very good application and there should not be any problem.
Before you want to choose data and start the burning procedure you must select on which media the data should be burn (CD or DVD). Under Option More check if the option Write is activated. I hope that option Simulation is disabled.
    Which M30x-xxx has you exactly?

  • Burning Data DVD

I am trying to burn a data dvd but everytime i insert a dvd, idvd opens up and i do not get a dvd icon on the desktop
do i use idvd to create my data dvd and how or how do i fix the problem

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Open the System Preferences and choose "CDs & DVDs". Under the section that says, "When you insert a blank DVD" be sure to choose "Open Finder". Then, when you put a blank DVD in, an icon for the disk will appear on the Desktop and you can drag your items into the icon.
You can leave this setting this way and wait until iDVD asks you for a blank disk the next time you're making a video DVD.

  • Satellite 5200-903: Can't read my burning Data-DVD

    Hallo,
i have a problem with my DVD/CD-ROM. It can't read anymore of my Data-DVD (backups of my harddrives) , which I burned with the same. Also it can read Movie-DVDs only after I put the DVDs in and out a couple of times. It has no problems with CDs.
Do you think it's a software or a hardware problem.
    Thanks,
    Matthias

    Hi Matthias,
This sounbds like a possible hardware problem to me. As you know the laser has to be re-phased to handle DVDS and the allowable tolerances are much smaller. Hence your unit can handle CDs correvtly but is struggling with DVDs.
Have you tried cleaning the lens in your DVD-ROM, this may improve the situation for you.
    Best of Luck

  • Cant Burn Data Dvds HELP!

Actually Im not sure I can burn any Dvds at all! Im on a toshiba satelittle L305-s5919....and ive had it for quite a few years but ive never tried to burn anything before. Ive downloaded three diffrent programs and each program gives me basically-rthe same error that the Disc isnt compatible?! but im using the SAME dvds ( DVD-R ) that i use in my desktop and they work just fine on my desktop.... is it because this drive is a rw that i need a diffrent type of disc or something? or is my burning function just dead? UHG!!!!!!!!!! HELP!

I looked up your model.  Your DVD drive is supermulti drive, capable of many media types. The spec states that its DVD-R Maximum Speed Compatibility single layer is 8X.  Are you using optical media that is compatible?  Another type of problems people sometimes have is brand of media.  Some burner is picky about lower quality name brands such as Memorex.
I use ImageBurn free program that many in video forum seem like. It’s usually reliable.

  • Cannot burn data dvd with super drive

    Hello together,
i try to burn a dvd in my Mac mini with superdrive using the disk-utility.
It is possible to delete a DVD +RW (fast or normal)
It is not possible to set a new name for the disk
It is not possible to burn the disk ("not enough space")
    I'm logged in as admin.
What do i have to do else to burn a dvd?

Quite cool + thanks a bunch!
I still don't know (but for the moment: i don't care anyway ;-)) why it's not possible with the Disk utility, the "Help" sytem makes a lot ado about. Anyway, for the moment i'm happy again :-D
Good night from the other side of the ocean,

  • Error when burning data dvd after installing 7.3.2.6

Making a data backup of a playlist of about 400 songs. Around 6 songs have the exclamation point with the error message "The song could not be used because the original could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I located the originals and then went to burn again. Same error message on the same songs. On my library, these six songs are just fine (no exclamation mark) and the original location is plainly listed under "Get Info" and "Where." Is there a solution?

The mystery thickens. I added songs to the playlist. Only 79 of them made it to the DVD. However, the songs that previously had the exclamation mark were among the few that made it onto the DVD. No explanation for why the rest of the songs were not included.

  • Problem Burning Data DVD's(Different than the big topic, I assure you)

So iTunes is recognizing my discs fine, it says you have inserted a blank disc and all that hoopla, but when I click burn it just goes back and forth rapidly between "burning disc.... initializing" and "Insert Blank Disc".
I have updated iTunes, reset Nero burn rights, restarted computer, tried different discs, restarted the burner, tried putting it in a new playlist(I know about the weird characters thing) etc....
The discs burn fine with Nero, and iTunes it detecting them okay, it's just a weird freak thing.
ANY help at all would be IMMENSLY appreciated.
I'm trying to back up my library btw.

Now I'm getting "Error 1771", does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Burning a data DVD

I don't know how to go about burning information onto a DVD-R in data format. I want the information in data format so that I can fit more info onto it. I've used Microsoft all my life because I guess it's a family thing. but I bought a new mac recently and I am just starting to get the hang of it.
the thing is Microsoft windows was able to burn data CD's and DVD's. But I have no clue if macs are capable of burning data DVD's. I saw that itunes had the option of burning dvd data.but I was wondering if Finder had an easier way of doing this.

    Ah. That's different.
An audio CD has tracks - data files - in uncompressed format - usually .aiff
So an audio cd can take a number of .aiff files as long as they are not too long - if you pop in a cd and look at it in the finder you'll see the .aiff files. Each song on a cd is therefore an .aiff file of - I'm guessing- say 50mb for 3 minutes.
A CD player is looking for .aiff files. So when you take a compressed audio file - e.g. mp3 and say "burn to cd" - the software will just "upconvert" the small file to a big one by extrapolating the data (guessing). This will not sound very good, although many people won't mind it too much.
If you have something to play the compressed files on e.g a cd player which plays mp3s, then you can just burn them to a disk using the finder - or even itunes - at their normal size and get lots more songs on the cd. In which case the answer Neuroanatomist gave you earlier is correct - just try it.
For more advanced burning options, get Roxio Toast - which is like Nero and will easily create the "Data DVDs" you're after. Disc burning is an odd thing, sometimes players can be finicky.
So try iTunes first - in itunes, create a playlist and use "burn playlist to disk" - you can set it to Data DVD or CD in iTunes preferences/advanced/burning.
    Best of luck.

  • Creating a Data DVD as a Device

I recently came across a DVD that showed up in iTunes as a device (such as an iPod does). I was able to figure out how to burn a Data DVD or CD within iTunes so that it will show up as a device but, also on that DVD, when I looked at the actual information on the disk outside of itunes, there was also a link to a webpage as well. Does anyone know how I would be able to add such a link or even any sort of text file to the DVD as well?

Thanks for the reply Marty but I've tried that and it doesn't work. I usually burn Data DVD's of my music through Toast or Nero (depending on which computer I'm using) but they never show up as a Device in iTunes. The only way that I've been able to get a DVD to show up as a device is to go to the pref's, advanced tab, burning and select to burn a Data CD or DVD. If I burn straight from iTunes, it shows up as a device. Otherwise, if I use a 3rd party program, it doesn't show up in iTunes at all.
The weird thing is that library I came across where there is a link. Somehow, they were able to burn a CD-Rom that shows up in iTunes as a Device and has that link as well. I've tried everything and can't seem to do the same.
Thanks for taking the time to try and help though. Any other thoughts? I'm tapped.
