Burning disc image with encryption

I've been burning disc images thru idvd's interface for a while. I just noticed in disk utility the option of encrypting the dvd (AES-128), to prevent access to contents, files, etc., which might be useful when making customer copies.
Is this something anyone is using?

Are you referring to data dvd's?
To the best of my knowledge, Data Dvd's may work well on your mac but they do NOT play back on most set top dvd players.
It is possible to encrypt data to a dvd BUT it is Not possible to encrypt an entire iDvd (at least not in terms of preventing duplication /playback on a standard Dvd Player/recorder) in the same manner as a commercially pressed DVD function which are copy protected (CSS) when mass replicated.
They are two entirely separate forms of encryption.

  • Can't get iDVD to burn disc/image

Heya, I've got my entire dvd working in iDVD, with the menus, movies, and everything totaling 2.9GB out of 4.2GB possible. Menus are 8:13 out of a possible 15:00, so I know the data sizes are fine.
Whenever I try to burn my disc, it gets to the "Rendering menu video asset" section, and nothing happens. The program just goes to the spinning beach ball and then stops responding.
I searched the forums a bit and found out to try saving the project as a disc image, and then burn it with disc utility, but even on that, it still freezes when trying to render the menus.
This is the third disc I have authored, and the other two worked just fine, and very quickly. Any ideas on why this isn't working.
P.S. I have not edited any of the videos directly, such as there are no transitions or chapter markers in any of the videos.

Have you used any MP3s in iDVD? AAC and AIFF are OK.

  • Error when burning disc image

An error occurred when I tried to burn a disc image of a DVD slideshow. The slideshow has 324 slides in it and is almost 38 minutes long at the moment. I have added sound by creating a sound track in iMovie using a combination of songs downloaded from iTunes and tracks from my own CDs then blending the two blending the two. The slideshow plays on the computer and I have burned a disc image two or three times as I was creating it.
    Any advice?

I have burned a disc image two or three times as I was creating it.
Can you clarify what you did exactly? You mean you saved the project as a disk image, then went back and did further work on the project?
The audio tracks you imported from iTunes may have been copy protected and will not burn in iDVD. The workaround is to burn those tracks to an audio CD in iTunes, then re-import into iTunes from that CD. Then will transfer to iMovie and iDVD without problems.

  • Video freezes when burning disc image

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem when making a disc image? I created movie in imovie and saved it as a dv (which I do all the time). After creating an idvd menu, etc., I save it as a disc image. But when I test the movie in dvd player, it works for a while (in this case about 8 min) and then the video freezes. I can still hear it though.
I did a few others a couple months ago and they were fine. This movie is 1 1/2 hours and another was 1/2 hr. and both froze about the same times.
I don't know if it's a system error that may just need idvd to be re-installed or something else.
If anyone has a solution to this, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your comment but the problem exists even BEFORE I burn it. I do the test from mounting the disc image and it's there. I think it's happening when idvd is encoding the movie for the disc image, but I don't know why.

  • Burn disk image with a pc

Hi, I would like to know, if it is possible to burn a idvd disk image with a pc.
(I want to get a macbook, and since I already own a pc with a dvd-burner I think it would be best to save the 200 $ and just get the cheapest model. I still want to be able to burn a few iDVD Projekts so the question is, what kind of format iDvD saves the images in - iso or some fancy mac format?)

  • Burning Disc Images

After burning a disc image, I mounted CD. On the CD, I could only see the files copied, but no evidence of disc image or .dmg file. Is this normal? I expected to see .dmg file on new CD.

The diskimage file IS the CD. You make a diskimage file and burn it to the CD, or any mountable media. At that time the diskimage is transmogrified to the media itself.
I suppose you could create a diskimage file, mount it, then copy a diskimage file to the diskimage. I don't know what the point of that would be though.
I know the diskimage concept is hard to handle, and cranky to create and manage. But the idea of a virtual disk is very useful, and Apple made a good decision to adopt it.

  • Problem to burn iso image with disk utility

    hi,
i burnt an iso image file on a cd using disk utility.
I checked the md5 of the burn, and found it is different than the original iso file.
how do i create an EXACT iso image burn?
    more details:
i downloaded file.iso from the web, inserted a blank CD, opened disk utility, chose "burn", then located the image, and confirmed.
after the disk utility announced "success", i wanted to check that the md5 of the burnt cd matches the original. so i used "dd if=/dev/disk1 of=~/file.dd" but i got a completely different file than the original file.iso...
not only that the md5 not match (which could be due to some extra 0 bytes), but i even compared the two files using xxd, and they look similar, but every now and then file.dd (=copy of the brunt CD) has a extra chunk of garbage bytes (and then the files are again the same, and then another chunk of garbage, etc.)
so how do i create a 1:1 burn of file.iso?

The problem here is that most Mac disc utilities, including the built-in Disk Utility, take a different approach when it comes to image burning. Instead of telling the program you want to burn an image, then choosing the file, you're supposed to do the reverse: You choose the file, then tell the program you want to burn it. So, to burn an ISO image to disc, here's what to do:
    1.Insert a blank disc.
    2.Start Disk Utility.
3.From the File menu, choose Open Disk Image and select the ISO to be burned.
4.In the list of volumes, you will now see an item representing the ISO file.
    5.Select it.
6.Click the Burn button and follow the instructions.

  • Multiplexer error--can't burn disc image from iDVD

Originally FCP. to QT. To iMovie. Added chapters--left auto-generated numerals. Imported to iDVD thru Media Browser..
Film is 53 minutes plus menu (includes 3 minute silent footage in single drop box).
console reports the error as : "7/12/10 9:22:56 AM [0x0-0x418418].com.apple.iDVD[49872] terminate called after throwing an instance of 'M2V::Exception'"
    What is an M2V::Exception?
Is the only work-around to drop out the chapters? And will that work. I have done Disk Repair and Restart.

I redid the movie without chapters. It wrote the disc image.
Now it is not writing to re-writable DVD. Here is what console said:

  • Can't burn .ISO image with k3b/brasero on DVD-RW disc.

I don't understand what's going wrong here, so I hope someone can help me.
I have created an .ISO image (of a video) using DVDstyler.
    (1) DVDstyler will burn it to a DVD-RW without any problems.
    (2) I can burn it from the command line (growisofs etc.)
    (3) I can burn it to a DVD-R from any application (DVDstyler, K3b, Brasero)
K3B and Brasero will write data to a DVD-RW any without problems
But, when I try to burn the dvd.iso to a DVD-RW disc with either k3b or Brasero, they fail with various  error messages.

  • IDVD 7.0.4 crashes while burning disc/image

When I try to 'burn' my project to disk or 'save as image' iDVD 7.0.4 crashes without any warnings after rendering the menues right at the beginning of the video render.
Main video in project is AIC (758x592, Quality: middle, Progressiv/Linear PCM, 48 kHz, 16 Bit) exported by iMovie'09 with some chapter markers and video-enhancement as recommended in the forum for best quality and then imported into iDVD.
Earlier project shared to iDVD directly from iMovie burned without problems. Can the codec be the issue? Dropzones use certain parts of the same videofile and they render without problems, I can see them completed in the iDVD-project-package.
    Additional questions:
    1. why is the file exported with iMovie that large (also with successful project; eg.: orig. file 3, 98 GB, exported file 11,95 GB)? (chapter markers and video-enhancement for the whole file?) Makes archiving a trouble.
    2. is there a way to replace the main video in the iDVD-project without distroying the manual menu-/text-/... edits (more titles on one menu, etc.) I made earlier? When I import a whole new videofile in another format (for testing the codec issue), iDVD takes the chapters once more and creates the template-conform menues again, partly overlaying my older ones.

Just to offer condolences. I have been greatly disappointed in iDVD -- crashes more often than burns successfully. Lots of wasted time waiting for a burn to be successful, only to find toward the end of the process, I get a msg "rendering" a problem, or couldn't complete, or crashes and then I have to stand on my head to get the DVD to eject. Have the issue both with movies I've downloaded to iPhoto and with photos downloaded to iPhoto that I've turned into Slideshows. Wish I had awnsers for both of us -- or however many of us that are out there....

  • Multiplex Error - While Burning Disc Image

I've been trying to burn an hour and a half dvd using idvd '08 on professional quality, coming from and AIC HDV project in final cut express 3.5. It takes around 5 hours to encode and then for the third time it's given me a multiplexer error at the end. Is there anyway to solve this?

  • Burning an MP3 with Roxio Jam

I just purchased Roxio Toast/jam thinking that I can make MP3 discs that crossfade. It would seem that I can't. Is there a way to work around this?
Jam will not burn MP3's at all! Also I can't drag the files from Jam into Toast and burn them after I set the crossfades.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

If you choose Save as Disc Image with Jam you'll be able to open that image file in Toast. However, that still won't help you because Toast also does not encode MP3s.
Since you want these tracks to always play in the same order (otherwise the cross fade wouldn't sound very sensible) you can Save as Disc Image with Jam and import that image file to iTunes. At least I think iTunes can import a Sound Designer II file which is the format the Jam saves. Then have iTunes convert that single combined track to mp3. Now you have a mp3 with crossfades between the different songs within that mp3.

  • Background Pictures in Disc Images

I've been trying to create a disc image using Disc Utility that displays a background image when you open it, similar to the kind used by many shareware apps distributed these days (ie. a picture that says "To install, drag this folder to your hard disk").
The problem is that I can't seem to get the background picture to "stick", as it were. I've set up a folder with a bg pic and dragged it onto Disc Utility to create a compressed disc image, but the background disappears when I open the finished product. I've tried altering the disc image once it's finished instead, but as soon as I eject it and re-load the image, it's lost its background picture.
I sort of managed to get this to work by creating an uncompressed read/write disc image with Disc Utility instead and then altering the contents with my background picture, but when I transfer it to another computer my settings have vanished. This isn't really an ideal solution anyway, though, as I would rather used a compressed image for internet distribution.
I've tried doing a search on this forum for similar queries, but most of them seem to concentrate on how to make the background picture a hidden file, which I'm not terribly concerned about. That, and I'm not all that keen on too much fiddling about in the Terminal...
So, can anyone help me here? How do those shareware developers make their custom disc images? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Will burning an encrypted disc image result in an encrypted disc?

I searched for this all over and was surprised that I couldn't find a thread from later than 2002. Basically, if I put some files in a disc image which I've password-protected (in Disk Utility), and then burn a disc from that image, will the resulting disc be password-protected also? If not, does anyone know of a similar or equivalent procedure that I could use to back up sensitive data?
    Many thanks,

You need to distinguish between using a disk image as part of the creation of a disk, and burning the image to a disk. Some people use DU to make an image, then mount that image and essentially just burn the files to a disk. Alternatively you can burn the image file itself to a disk. It's the image file that is encrypted. So if you burn the files that are on the image to a disk they are not encrypted, but if you burn the main disk image to a disk and then try to open that image it will require a password.
