Burning disk Problems. Toast/Compressor

So I'm burning a movie I made onto a DVD from a prores 422 quicktime file using toast and/or compressor and the disk is always messed up.
When burning with compressor the disk gets stuck about halfway through playback, after the burn is complete. I can skip past this part on my DVD player using by fast forwarding.
When burning with Toast the beginning of the movie on the disk skips frames or is pixelated for about 5 seconds. The rest of the movie plays fine and normal
I'm using a samsung BD/DVD burner.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

This is hard because playback issues can be caused by a variety of things:including the physical media (which might be one defective disk, a batch, or just a sub-standard brand); or the DVD player; or an excessively high bit rate that the player can't easily read, or (less frequently) difficult content that the compression process had trouble encoding.
I would start by trying another player.
Since you did two separate burns, it's not a problem with a specific disk. But if switching players doesn't work, try a different brand – say, Verbatim, Maxell, or JVC Taiyo Uden.
If neither of the above works, then try a lower nit rate setting - say, 7.2 Mbs max, and perhaps put in a compression marker or two at the places in your movie where the playback freezes.
Let us know.

  • Problem burning disks

    Hi,
I upgraded to leopard without incident, but I have recently discovered that when I insert a DVD-R, I get the message , "This disk cannot be used since it is not recognized".
However, if I use iTunes, and select "backup to disk", and insert the exact same disk, it will burn no problem. The problem also occurs with DVD+R DL disks as well.
    I previously had no problems.
Any ideas what is going on??

    Zapping PRAM:
Shut down your computer. Turn the computer back on and immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R, continuing to press until you hear the startup sound for the second time. This resets the computer’s parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
IMPORTANT: Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Instead of looking via Finder, open the disk utility (Finder->Utilities->Disk Utility.app) and see if the disk shows up there.
I still think it's a marginal disk that you are using. Try a different brand disk and see what happens. Macs are a bit fussier about these things than are PCs. If you have access to an external optical drive, that's another way to check things out.
Toast, to me, is the only way to go. I have never had any problems or software conflicts with it and it has never failed. I have had some issues erasing DVD R/W and CD R/W disks using the Mac DU, but again, Toast comes through every time.

  • Problems Burning Disks after OS Update

I've been working on a photo project with tens of thousands of image files. As I've been working through this project, I've been burning pictures to CD-ROMs. I'm using standard 700 MB CD-R disks, and until now I've been able to fit about 3,500-4,000 files on each disk, or a total size of about 640-660 MB. I've burned ten CD-ROMs this way in the past year.
Last night I was prompted for an automatic update from OS 10.4.9 to OS 10.4.10, which I did. After the computer updated and restarted, something automatically launched itself from the dock, gave the following unusual message which immediately aroused my suspicion: UPDATING HL-DT-ST DVDRW 6 WA 4080 MA TO BE39 ...
This was as far as I was able to copy before the process finished and the screen disappeared. Another part of the message said not to interrupt the installation or else I could end up with a non-functioning device.
Then the computer restarted itself. A second time the application started itself from the dock but said there weren't any drivers needing updating.
This is the first time in 13.5 years of using Macs that I've ever had to update a driver, and I was very suspicious since it did it all automatically without my authorization.
I restarted the computer again, and the application launched a third time, so I hunted it down and deleted it. It was some sort of driver utility (I wish I'd written down its name). After this, everything seemed to work fine until I went to burn a CD last night.
First, the finder looked slightly different, with new buttons and layout specific to burning a CD. Second, the disk appeared on the desktop with the extension .fbpf, though it had never had an extension before. Third, when I dragged the files to be copied into the Finder window, it just created shortcuts instead of copying the files. I had to do a command-c and a command-v to get them in there. Not all of the files would show up in the finder window, but if I did a command-v again it would ask if I wanted to overwrite them. Fourth, I had 640 MB of files, but it said there wasn't enough room, that the files to be copied were larger than the disk.
Eventually I removed files until it said there was enough room, so I burned the disk. The first attempt produced a disk with half the files missing. The second attempt produced a disk with only 2,007 files and a total size of 399.8 MB. This was wasting about 40% of space on the CD. When I looked at the CD, however, it appeared that the burn had gone nearly to the edge of the disk, instead of about 60% of the way, so something is filling up that space it seems. But what?
My immediate suspicion was the driver update related to the OS update, so I did some researched and realized that OS 10.4.10 is causing tons of problems for lots of people, so I decided to revert to OS 10.4.9.
I performed an archive install back to OS 10.4.8, got rid of the old system folder, and downloaded the update to 10.4.9. Disk Utility returned no errors. I finished that this morning, but the disk burning problem remains, and the Finder even froze up during this process.
My guess is that reverting to a previous OS did not fix whatever changes were made to the driver, but I'm not sure how I should proceed here. I'm also wondering if this is more generally related to OS 10.4, because I cannot recall burning a data CD like this since I upgraded from OS 10.3 (but backing up purchased audio files from iTunes was the same as always).
Does anyone have any suggestions here? (I'd prefer not to have to reformat the drive and restore everything from back-up and original install disks because that takes about six hours.)

    Thanks Carolym for your response.
Go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items. Delete any
    applications you have listed.
I did this; there were four applications including the driver update software that self-installed last night. Who knew it was still lurking around after being deleted?
But, after restarting, the problem persists.
Is this a SuperDrive that can also burn to DVD? If
    so, read here; http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/
    superdrivefw_update2.1.html
    Yes, it is.
This page didn't make any sense to me. Were these posts by people installing the update or removing it? That page seems to refer to the update that happened last night, which seems to have started my problems. Can you elaborate on this?
I've replicated this on both my internal drive and an external drive connected by FireWire. I've never had problems with this media before. The alsoft.com site is apparently off-line today.
The entire problem seems to be software related. The size discrepancy between what's reported by the "Burn Disk" Finder window is now TWICE the size reported on the "Get Info" window. It's as if it is reading the contents to be burned twice when calculating their size.
The files I want to put on a disk are 640.5 MB. Everything on my computer says this, except the Finder window for the disk. At the bottom of the window it reports the files are over 1,291 MB in size, which is too large to fit on the 700 MB disk. But when I select the files in that same finder window with command-i, it says 640.5 MB.
For kicks, I put the disk I burned last night through Disk Utility. It showed the 400.5 MB of files on the 700 MB Disk. So, there was about 260 MB of space wasted on that disk. When I burned the disk last night, the computer was thinking the files were about 660 MB (which is the most it has ever allowed me to write to a disk). Disk Utility also said the disk was burned in Mac format, and I was under the impression this computer was burning to ISO format.
Is there some setting somewhere that perhaps I'm overlooking that writes the disks a certain way and that could be the cause? Could it be a memory issue/allocation/buffer size/etc issue? Something else?

  • Burning project with Toast, not built in burn utility

okay so here's the sitch. got the project finished. but iDVD won't burn it or let me save an image cause it's like .2GB over the disc space for an SL disc and I don't have a DL burner. It just says 'remove content' but theres' nothing I can remove. The only stuff in there is stuff that has to be in there, not a footage second more or a menu more. I even took out the little movie that was going to autoplay at the front and all the menu audio hoping that would do it, but no.
in Toast, this wouldn't be a problem cause it can, and very nicely does, recompress the image just enough to fit it on the avail disc. But I need a way to shoot the project to Toast.

Hmmm, you're in a tough spot. Your iMovie production can be picked up in Toast and a DVD created, but your iDVD menus and themes belong to iDVD and won't make the jump. Here's the options I see:
    1) split the project in two and get higher resolution (lower compression) from spreading the material over 2 DVDs.
    2) be a tougher editor and remove DVDROM content, footage in your productions, etc.
    3) give up your iDVD menus and burn it in Toast (right click your iMovie video icon; Show Package Contents to find the Quicktime version of your video; drag it into Toast).
    4) find someone with DVD Studio Pro and import the iDVD project, using that more powerful compressor to shrink down your project, but retain your menus.
    5) figure out your double-layer burner options.

  • Burned Disk Image Won't Play on DVD Player and Work Around

    Hi all,
I was having problem with DVD not being recognized on a regular, stand alone, set top DVD player. The program was created in iDVD6 and saved to disk image. Then I used Disk Utility to burn it and the resulting disc played on Mac but not regular player.
Knowing that the blank media was good from a previous Toast 7 burn, I used Toast 7's Video TS option to burn from the mounted disk image. This disc worked on regular player with one small difference. With multiple videos (in addition to chapter markers) on the DVD, fast forwarding past the end of one video would start the next one with Toast, whereas the disk image (played on the Mac) would return to DVD menu.
I never burned directly from iDVD 6, since the video conversion process took 7 - 11 hours, so I don't know if that would work or not.
I hope this is helpful to some and if anyone decides to buy Toast from Roxio directly, leaving the online cart page open for a minute or two will pop up a 10% off incentive to urge you to check out. That's as of a week or two ago.
    Yu

whereas the disk image (played on the Mac) would return to DVD menu.
That has happened to me, but not with the one project I made with iDVD 6.

  • No audio on burned disk

Not sure if this is an iDVD or iMovie question, but I thought I'd try this forum first. I completed an iMovie project last night and imported it to iDVD. The movie project was about 40 minutes in length with some added music files (aiff), transitions, titles, chapter markers etc. It was completed and saved to my iOmega 250 gig external drive connected to my iMac G4 via Firewire 400. I imported the project to iDVD and used the "Reveal" theme, adding some still photos and a song to the "title page" of the theme. The preview worked fine. Before retiring last night, I set the computer to burn the project as an image file to my external drive. This morning I checked my computer and it said that the burn was completed successfully. I then used Toast 6 to burn a copy to a disk (Maxell DVD-R 16X). However, when I went to play the DVD on my Sony DVD player, there is no audio in the movie. The only audio I get is the song that plays on the theme "title page." I burned another copy to disk, and the problem still persist. Now I have two nice gold-colored coasters! Thanks in advance for any advice on solving this problem.

    Bengt and F Shippey:
Gentlemen, I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my inquiry. Thanks to reading this forum shortly after I purchased my external drive, I was informed that I needed to format it for Mac, which I did (Mac OS Extended journaled) so that wasn't the issue. I should have mentioned that I had previously been successful burning a DVD from an earlier project saved as a disk image. Also, I have plenty of space on my internal drive (about 46 gb). Finally, I made sure that all the songs that I used in the project were not iTunes protected. (used only some loops from the IMovie sound files and some songs reimported from CD that were purchased from the iTunes store).
Shortly after I posted my topic, I went back through some older topics on the iDVD forum and located one that was similar to my issue. In that topic, it was suggested that the chapter markers may be the culprit causing problems with audio being left out of the burned disk, particularly if the chapter markers were next to transitions in the iMovie project. So, I went back and eliminated all my chapter markers, reburned to a new disk image and then used Toast 6 to burn a new disk. Problem solved. The disk now contains the audio. I'm happy about that, but it would have been nice (though not essential) to have chapter markers in my project. Do you think that, by simply making sure that my chapter markers are not next to transitions, that I can get both a good disk with audio AND chapter markers? Thanks again.

  • Weird and aggravating user-burned DVD problem.

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a very weird and annoying problem with my self-written data DVDs.
Basically, when I wrote a couple of data-DVDs today, I cannot seem to copy the files from these DVDs on a Mac via the normal way anymore. Basically, when I mount my DVD I see all my files just fine, but when I wish to copy one to my computer I get the forbidden-cursor (the one with the black arrow and a white stopsign). Now the weird part is that if I select multiple files I can actually copy them to the hard-drive, but with a strange caveat; namely the file that I selected last will not be copied over.
This was the first time my self-written DVDs showed this behaviour, so to check I dug out an older DVD which I knew worked perfectly a year ago. But lo and behold, it now also displays this behaviour. What's more, it seems suddenly all three Macs in this house decided do treat my DVDs (old and new) in this weird way. The lone Windows pc downstairs otoh actually did just fine and allowed me to copy single files from the disc with no problem.
But that's not all. If I insert such a DVD and later on insert a self-written CD, this CD suddenly shows the same behaviour. Only after relaunching the finder will this CD work correctly again (sadly, this doesn't help with the DVDs).
To write my DVDs I use an external LaCie d2 16x DVD+/-RW (completely up to date with respect to its firmware) with Toast Titanium 7.0.1 on an eMac G4 1ghz running Tiger 10.4.7 .
I use either DVD+R or -R (both show this problem) and write them using Toast's Mac & PC data disk option. Between the three Macs here at home the only constant factors are the Apple-supplied system updates, leading me to believe there is either an undocumented burning bug in Toast or there is a problem in Tiger 10.4.7 .
A google-search did not bring up anything, neither a confirmation nor a solution for this problem. My question now is; has anyone here ever experienced this problem and found a solution (or have at least an idea what the underlying problem could be)?
Thanks for any and all replies,
    Tim
P.S.: I figured that perhaps there was a sort of permission problem on the mount volumes, so I ran the fix permissions routine but to no avail sadly.
    eMac G4 (1 Ghz) ATI-graphics, combo-drive, 512 Mb RAM, 160 GB HDD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Update:
It seems that older DVDs do in fact still work ok when one relaunches the finder, just like I mentioned for cd's in my above post. So seemingly the DVDs written today somehow seem to 'corrupt' the Finder with their behaviour.
In fact the last 'good' backup DVD I wrote was in february of this year, so whatever is causing this must have happened between then and now. This gives me the impression that there must be an incompatibility between 10.4.7 and either Toast 7.0.1 or with the firmware on my DVD±RW drive.
    Any insight is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Tim

  • IDVD burned disk does not start at main menu

The IDVD burned disk starts randomly in the middle of the disk. Cannot access the main menu. I started with an IMovie with chapter headings, videos and pictures. Then shared it with IDVD, created themes, music, changed the headers, etc. Burned the disk using the File Burn DVD command. The disk takes over 1 1/2 hours (IMovie orginal is 15 minutes) to burn.

Hello to all of you first-timers here!
    Welcome to the discussions.
First, are you using iMovie 9?
Did you set chapter markers in iMovie? Did you follow the Chaper Marker Rules?
RULES: No marker at the beginning of your movie, no markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or end of the movie, and no markers on or within 2 seconds of your movie.
Next, did you put your movie in iDVD and then go make any changes to it? Sometimes that causes the chapters to default to the same spot in the movie. The only solution is to recreate the iDVD project.
You should first try deleting iDVD's preference file. You can find this by closing iDVD, going to your Home file (YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. iDVD will create a new one when you relaunch it.
    Reopen iDVD.
Try creating the disk image file again or burning a disk again.
If that results in the same problem, create a new iDVD project. Then, drag in the iMovie project from the Media/Movies pane in iDVD instead of sharing it from iDVD.
Post back if that does not resolve the issue.

  • Is this disk problem a coincidence?  (unused node is not erased (node 1 )) on both PS CS and AI CS

I just tried to install both PS CS and AI CS from my install disks that I haven't touched in years and both disks' installation apps failed to respond.  I ran disk utility and got the same message: unused node is not erased (node 1).  Repair disk.  Which, of course, I cannot do.  This happed on two different computers.  It seems very strange to me that both these disks are damaged as such and I was wondering what exactly does that message mean?

This may be  a legacy Mac thing, as they used to have a different CD file system back in the day. You may just need some specific driver/ system extension to handle that. Downloading a trial version of a burning program like Toast might also help to get access to the files...

  • Idvd will not burn disks

All of a sudden my work computer and my home computer will not burn disks in IDVD?

Are you getting any messages or warnings when you try?  What systems are you running on each and what version of iDVD?  Is it the same project that you tried to burn on each Mac?  What brand and type of disk are you using?  What burn speed did you try?
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

My newly installed burner works fine from i-tunes, except the burned disk won't work in my car CD player. The old burner's work just fine in the car. Please help.

Using my new G5 I have the same problem, which I did not know using my old G4 with an external LaCie burner. The CD-Changer in my car is not able to read audio-cds, also my cd-player in my home hifi-system. The only way to play these audio-cds is (strange...) to put them directly in the main tuner of my car (usually used for the navigation cd), not using the Changer.
Maybe the problem really depends on the quality of the CD-Rs. I have used CD-Rs from Sony (it´s a brand, I think?) and will try Verbatim.
