Burning DL iDVD project -Problems!

Hi All, could do with some advice here!
I have used iMovie since the get-go, and all later versions and iDVD!
Have happily done many projects but this latest DVD project (a friends wedding) has been the biggest to date.
Over 140Gb of raw footage and photos of a big wedding.
Months of editing and the job is finished.
All is well.
It took over 7.5hrs of final rendering on my intel and I ended up with a 7.41Gb final burn (to a dual-layer disk!)
I rendered and burnt in one go as advised by Apple AND ALSO separately after rendering a disk image!
Both will play to a point on my Sony surround TV system player but surprisingly not at all with my cheap testing TV player (which usualy PLAYS everything!)
ALL plays OK via the Macs DVD s/w player so I know the burn and image file is OK too.
I have burnt this via iDVD and also via Toast 8.1 and now also via Disk Utilities 'burn image' feature but get the same results!.... most will play but further into the DVD it won't (assuming this is where the data is on the 2nd layer!..... by the way i also have some DATA---pics/screensaver etc--- on the disk so there is NOT just an audio/video folder)
I have now burnt this 4 times and get the same results. I am using Datawrite 8.5Gb DVD_R DL disks...... is the disk the problem?
I have the Internal matshita DL burner and also a Freecom Firewire DL burner, (tried both!) and plenty of space!
I have made dozens of DVDs on SL disks with no problem!
I know what I m doing with the Apps and the Mac it just doesn't seem to burn correctly to a DVD?

Sounds like you are doing things correctly except for your choice of medias maybe. May be a media issue (not sure) but it's worth trying out. Try Verbatim or Maxell instead (just a suggestion).

  • Shaky still images in burned iMovie/iDVD project

Hello all, I've stopped by the discussion forums in the past for quick fixes to problems when they come up, this is my first post though that doesn't seem to address anything I've found on here...
I am working on a project that takes scanned pictures from regular print photos into iMovie 6 and then burned into iDVD 6. I have done this similar style of work several times and never run into this problem. The project looks fine in both iMovie and iDVD preview, and burns fine to disc. As soon as it is popped into a DVD player, some of the still images flash and shake around, it appears to happen on the same images every time.
The original project used about 100 photos, around 12 minutes of movie time. It uses only still pictures and there are cross dissolve transitions between each one. I have tried dragging and dropping the iMovie project into iDVD instead of using 'share'. I also saved as a disk image and burned slowly (4x) not only on my SuperDrive but on an external LaCie drive. I've even started a brand new project file, imported the pictures again from iPhoto and everything... still no luck. I've done about 5 trials now with these different settings, no luck. I use Verbatim DVD-r disks as well...
I've even tried scanning a few images and replacing them, thinking the file might be corrupted, but this isn't fixing the problem. Is there some setting that I'm missing or any other suggestions you have?
I'm trying to save a trip down to see a genius, but if I can't get any help I'll have no choice but to make the 3 hour drive to the nearest apple store. Hopefully someone has some suggestions! Thanks!

    Hi
    A. I don't use the *Share/Export to iDVD* function in iMovie. iMovie rendering can harm
    the photos in a movie.
I do: close iMovie, Open iDVD and import the movie project here (icon with a Star on it)
or just drop the icon into iDVD.
    B. Some photos with thin lines most often starts to flicker when viewed on a TV.
I do: In a photo editing program eg PhotoShop or Elements: Apply *Gausian blurr*.
Just slightly. Resulting in non-flickering photos.
    C. One can rather easily find out if this will occure by:
    • Connect Your miniDV (tape) Camera via FireWire.
    • Analog out of Camera to a TV-set
    • Set in iMovie. Playback via Camera
Now You see on the TV what the final Quality will be like.
    • Flicker (add Gausian Blurr to those photos)
    • Color, brightness & contrast
    • Over all playback rythm and sound

  • I can't burn my iDVD project to a DVD

After creating my project the burn button does not respond. I had a newer version of iDVD (7.0.3) so I installed on my iMac. After installing all the updates I opened the iDVD program. I then got this message on the screen. "Your Macintosh does not have a supported superdrive. Please note that while you will be able to work with iDVD projects you will not be able to burn a DVD disc." Can anyone direct me to a solution to this problem?

I believe that you will need to save it from iDVD to a disc image. Then you could write that image to an external DVD writer via Disk Utility. You probably should verify this in the iDVD discussion area.

  • Picture is cropped when burning an idvd project that was created in imovie

Good Evening! I am a new Mac user and finding it fun to work in imovie. However, I am running into a problem and looking for advice on how to fix it. I uploaded some pics from my camera and created a great 4 minute video in imovie with music, transitions, etc. I created it with standard settings and shared with multimedia Large, then added it into an idvd project. The problem is when i burn the dvd and play it on my dvd player the pictures are zoomed in a little. Let me give you an example..the very first slide is a group picture and underneath is the caption "circle of friends"...on the tv..the two people on the ends are not visible and the caption is also not all visible..what could be the problem and what is the fix?? please help this is what i was working on for a christmas gift...oh one more thing..when i preview you it in idvd and imovie and even on apple tv...it looks great..just when i burn it that it doesn't come out right

Read the iDVD software "Help" files to learn more about the "TV Safe" area.

  • Can't burn my IDVD project on a DVD or the desktop

    Hello,
I made a project with IDVD and now I want to burn it on a DVD, but this is not working.
First it seems to work, but then when he is at the stage to burn the movies and slideshows. IDVD gives the error with encoding/ decoding. I tried it several times but I get all the time the same error.
I tried to copy my file on the desktop, but I got the same problem.
    Could anybody please help me?!
    Thanks!
    Monique

What version of iMovie? iMovie '08 or iMovie HD (v. 6)?
What brand and format DVD? You should use DVD-R. Verbatim works perfectly for me. Memorex and TDK have bad track records here...
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • How do I burn a iDVD project on more than one computer?

I created an iDVD (7.1.2) project with three elements. Two iMovies made from iMovie '11 and a presentation made from Keynote (5.1.1).
I deleted the chapters in the slide show to help simplify matters and it did cut down on my burning/processing time.
I made this iDVD project for my son's 5th grade graduation. We would like to burn 135 copies to give each family one 'favor/dvd' for memory keepsake.
I do not want to burn 135 copies on my Superdrive (new to owning a mac) and do not want to ruin my Superdrive for a school project.
I can not take this to a commericial duplicater because of copyright issues with the music. We are not selling the copies, just giving a memory keepsake to the kids- of the year and the slide show from graduation, the other iMovie in iDVD, just contains one page of specifications; like my contact info and songs used etc..
I have parents that are willing to help me copy the movie, however I don't know how to do this?
I don't believe any of these parents have iDVD.
Someone mentioned through all my readings on apple communities and google, making an "ISO" of your project then anyone can make a copy of your movie on any platform: PC or Mac. What is an ISO? How do I make a ISO?
If I have a .img file from saving a disc image - would I burn the .img file to a dvd and give it to someone else to copy? Are there other files that need to go with my .img file?
If/When someone takes my .img file and puts it on their computer how do they copy it? Do they need burning software?
Can I just give a friend a burned DVD of my movie to burn copies on their computer?
What I tried: Bought a LaCie burner to use a external drive vs. my (Superdrive - worried about overuse). Saved project as a "Disc Image." Mounted to my Finder and then burned to external drive with disc utility. This worked successfully 4 times in a row then kept getting message "unsuccessful burn" I took the drive back to Fry's. Not sure if it was the drive?
Any advice to a newcomer would be great!
Summer has already begun and I would like to finish this project as soon as I can.
    Thanks so much, Deanna

Yes, you can distribute a burned disk of the project to those who can create duplicate disks.  Or create a disk image of the iDVD project using the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.
Then you can distribute the disk image to those who will burn the disks.  For PCs you'll have to convert the .dmg file to a .iso file so they can burn it.  This website describer how: Mac Help - Convert and Burn Mac .dmg or .img to .iso Windows PC-Compatible Disk Image
Suggest to them to burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
It would be prudent to rest your optical drive for about 30 minutes after burning 3 disks in a row. That will give the laser time to cool down before you start another batch.

  • Burning multiple iDVD projects at once

I'm trying to burn more than one dvd project to the same DVD, at the same time. The combined total of both projects is around 2GB, so i'm thinking it should fit? I've tried to burn one, then re-insert the same ( RW dvd ) and it wants to erase it before burning the 2nd project. Then I tried creating a burn folder in finder, but it only seems to burn the icon onto the dvd (in around 5 mins!!) and then gives me error messages when i try to open the icon that are on the dvd. So i'm wondering if i'm trying to do the (simple seemimg!) impossible? and i should just give up and burn one dvd per project? This just seems a waste when there is still space left on the dvd!
Thanks - I can't believe i'm the 1st to want to do this, so any help will be much appreciated!

    Hi
iDVD doesn't care about Gb at all. 2Gb can be to much and I've done movies as great as 50Gb.
iDVD ONLY cares about duration (including menus)
iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Movie 2Gb can be much more than 120 minutes and an elaborated FCE project on one
    hour even 50Gb or more.

  • Burning multiple iDVD projects to one DVD

I have iDVD 6 and I've made 3 family iDVD projects over the last few years. Is there a way I can burn all 3 projects onto one DVD? Maybe a new theme with each project as it's own chapter w/subchapters?
I've tried a few things, but not successfully. If it's not doable w/iDVD6, how about newer versions?
    thx - j

One way is to drag the underlying iMovie projects into the corner of the main menu window of a new iDVD project. They will import as three separate movies and become part of that project. Depends, of course, on how much running time your movies have. Running time for a standard DVD is 2 hours total. Double layer disks are 4 hours.
Another way would be to merge the three iMovie projects into one long project, and import that into iDVD as one long movie.

  • Burning duplicate iDVD projects

Question to the iDVD pros out there before I ruin my project. I have sucessfully burned my first copy of a DVD that I wish to duplicate. I have since bought more blank DVD's and am ready to burn more copies but am running low on disk space. My DVD project is a little over 4GB's, but the iMovie folder associated with my project is close to 24GB's. The real question I am curious about is can I delete the iMovie folder and still burn my movie again from the iDVD project or do I need the iMovie folder yet? I do not intend to make changes to my project and only wish to burn duplicate copies.
    Thanks

If you are going to make additional copies of the iMovie using iDVD, DO NOT ERASE THE IMOVIE FILE. That is the resource that iDVD uses. You can do one of several procedures.
    1. Since you have not copy-protected the iDVD, simply put it in your drive, quit DVD (as it will come on automatically), copy the AUDIO.TS and VIDEO.TS folders to a temporary folder. Then insert a blank DVD. Follow the usual directions when burning a CD/DVD: drag the two folders to the blank disk, and burn.
    2. Another way is to create a DVD image. After openning up the dvd.project file, choose "Save as disk image" from the drop down "File" menu. Now you can create as many DVDs as you like without having to go through the entire iDVD program. Copy the AUDIO.TS and VIDEO.TS folders to a blank DVD as indicated above and burn away.

  • Unable to burn saved iDVD project

I have exported a slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD and saved it in the Documents folder. Now when I go into iDVD to open an existing project, I can find the saved project in Documents but I am unable to get the project to open in iDVD so I can work on the slideshow and ultimately burn it to a DVD. How do you open a slideshow exported to iDVD after it has been saved to the Document folder??? Once an slideshow has been exported from iPhoto to iDVD can it be worked on (organized, music applied etc.) prior to being burned to a DVD? Please help, we're going crazy here!!!
    Paul from Wisconsin

    Hey Paul,
When you go to your documents folder what is the suffix (ending) of the file you exported? Is it .dvdproj or is it something else. I suspect you exported your slideshow out as a movie file (aka a Quicktime file). You need to open iDVD and then drag that movie file into the open iDVD window.
Once an slideshow has been exported from iPhoto to iDVD can it be worked on (organized, music applied etc.) prior to being burned to a DVD?
    No.
iDVD is the last step in the creation process. You should not be adding your slideshow to iDVD from iPhoto until the slideshow is exactly the way you want it. If you want to make changes to that slideshow, those changes are made in iPhoto and then you re-send your slideshow to iDVD.
Go to iPhoto, make your slideshow the way you want it, then go to Share > iDVD. This will take the slideshow and put it in iDVD where it needs to be. No extra steps.
    Hope that helps.

  • Impossible tu burn an idvd project . All dvd is ejected.

I made a project with Final Cut Express, imported it in iDvd as I always do. All dvds are ejected and the only message I get : Insert a dvd.

Try this workflow to see if it makes a difference:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Is it true that only Apple DVDs will burn an iDVD project?!

I'm using ESA DVD-RWs and I bought 100 of them. What gives? Will these disks work?

DVD-R is most compatible with stand-alone DVD players. Some brands are more reliable, such as Verbatim DVD-R. Burning at 4X or slower is a safe bet for added compatibility.
The last format I would use is DVD-RW or DVD+RW...
My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), RiTek 4X; Verbatim 1-8X, RiData 8X, and PioData 8X, all white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData checked out to be RiTek-made.
Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.
You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:
    http://www.shop4tech.com/
Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood store or:
    http://www.taperesources.com/
    http://www.newegg.com/
Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.
You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html
You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
    Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
    Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x
This can result in "mixed" experiences...
My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V http://ww1.onecall.com/PID_22332.htm which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

  • I can no longer burn iDVD projects or regular disc images... what's up?

When I try to burn an iDVD project it gets to the burn stage, ejects the disc, then just sits there. It says that it has one minute left. The disc is untouched and still blank.
When I try to save my iDVD project to a disc image then burn it, I get this error:
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2482/3732704004e249c50ff2o.png
What on earth is going on here? I have read several other reports of similar behavior, but no solutions.

That generally means what it says, for which there are mostly two possible reasons:
Your laser lens is dirty: try cleaning it using a proprietary CD/DVD player lens cleaner (the type with a tiny brush - no liquids please!).
You are using a brand of media that your Superdrive doesn't like (they can by picky!). Most of us here get the most consistent results from using Verbatim or Fuji DVD-R, burned at 2x or 4x.

  • External DVD burner to burn iDVD projects

I purchased an iMac about six months ago to replace an older Mac that I've had for about 10 years. I made the mistake of not getting a Super Drive when I made the purchase. I have spent some time learning about and creating iDVD projects but, of course, can only play them on my iMac and am unable to burn them to a DVD disk. Can I purchase an external DVD burner that will allow me burn my iDVD projects and, if so, can anyone suggest a reliable product?
    Thanks.

Use an ext. Lacie FW Burner or make your own like i did from a pioneer 110D and a standard FW400 enclosure. Pioneer 111 and 112 will also work. Nice thing about making you own is that it requires no additional FW drivers.
