Burning Dual Layer DVD in Disk Utility vs. Burn Folder

Using Disk Utility, I created an Image, (File > New Image from Folder), The resulting .dmg file was about 8.3 Gigabytes. Still in Disk Utility, I select the volume (Filename.dmg) and click Burn, insert a dual layer disk and get a "Disk does not have enough free space" message. I create another image of the same folder, but select "Compressed", giving a folder size of about 6.2 Gigabytes. I try to burn this but again get the "not enough free space" message.
Now I try creating a Burn Folder, put the 6.2 gb Filename.dmg in the folder and select Burn, It burns fine.
Why does the Burn Folder method work and not Disk Utility? What am I missing?

Hi James:
When you try to copy the dual-layer you may encounter problems because the layer-break may not be where you think it should be.
When you try to copy the actual dual Layer DVD, iDVD will inform you that doing so may result in a disc that has playback problems in DVD players. It states that you are better off burning it with iDVD than from a Disk Utility.
3rd party software that will help would be Roxio's Toast 6, 7 or Popcorn.

Thanks, JMVP. But Neil's thread doesn't really answer my question. What I meant was; I intend to buy an external dual-layer DVD burner and leave the original PowerDrive in the eMac. I want the dual burner to be able to burn dual layer DVD-R disks. Somebody told me that a G4 eMac hasn't got the something-or-other to operate any kind of dual layer burner.
What you're saying is, the right kind of dual layer burner will be compatible with an eMac, OR, the right kind of eMac drive will be compatible with a dual burner?
Sorry to be dense, this is unchartered territory for me.

Dual Layer Dvds - bad compression, or something worse?

I've recently been trying to burn a double layer dvd in disk utility but the video seems to have been over compressed into one layer?
I know my Macbook Pro is capable of doing the dual layer, but I can't find a setting anywhere for it.
Other cds and dvds will burn ok...
is it because I'm using a disk image on my hard drive?
Any help would be appreciated - I've been having a good look around but I can't find anyone with my problem!

The original post needs clarification to determine what the user meant. Generally speaking, there's data compression at the front-end when encoding information for storage on a video DVD - the conversion of source video into the MPEG2 format. There are two constraints, the permitted bit-rate of DVD video, and the size of the disk. When encoding, the user can specify the size of the target disk. If using iDVD, it won't permit your video to be over 2 hours long.
One thing to keep in mind is that if the source video is not noticeably higher-than-DVD-quality, the resulting MPEG2 compressed video stream will look noticeably lower quality. For example, if you have MPEG4 video from an AVCHD camcorder, the transcoding to MPEG2 will really degrade the video. None of that has anything to do with dual- versus single-layer disks. Further, Disk Utility doesn't do anything but copy bytes from the image file directly to the disk. It's oblivious to what it is writing and doesn't modify the content or encoding in any way.
However, in response to the above comment, it should probably be pointed out that the poster lives in Australia, where copyright rules are a little different. Specifically, the user's permitted to make a duplicate of a commercial DVD for a reasonable personal use (backup, copy for the summer house, etc.), the user is also permitted to "format shift" a work (transform it so that it may be replayed on a device that could not display the work as presented on the original). Unlike the USA, an individual can circumvent access controls on the media to do so. Of course, this is limited to fair and reasonable personal uses -- you can't share stuff by P2P or whatnot.
FWIW - Quite a few legal scholars believe the restrictions the US puts on "accessing" a work are not constitutional. The US' "Digital Millennium Copyright Act" rules regarding access controls (encryption, region coding, etc.) have never been tested in court. I suspect that would fail namely because the US law, as written, also restricts access to works in the public domain (if you've a DVD with a public domain film, but it's encrypted, it's against the law to decrypt it), and because the US has entered into treaties that, among other things, prohibit legal protection on restricting access to works based on their region of origin.
But, I digress.

Dual Layer DVD's not burning with Disk Utility

I successfully created two dual layer DVD's with a disk image that I created in iDVD. Checked both of those disks in a DVD player and both work fine. Now trying to burn more copies with the same procedure, same disk image file, same media manufacturer and all are failing. Any ideas? I can still successfully burn short videos on regular DVD's from iDVD so my burner has not completely failed. I had created a disk image out of the material that I need on the dual layer DVD because it's about 2 hours of video and iDVD was ejecting the disk too early without burning.

Sounds like the burner may have failed. It can fail in a way that only larger items cannot burn. Take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them check it out

Can Adobe Premiere Elements 12 burn a dual layer dvd disk? If not, which of the components is at fault?

When I spoke to a person about upgrading from Premiere Elements 10 to 12, I specifically asked if the program could burn DUAL LAYER 8.5 dvds and I was told that it could. That is the ONLY reason that I upgraded. Since recording in full HD the files are larger. I video plays for local theaters. I have been trying to burn a disk that is 7.5GB (2 hours 15 minutes). I bought RIDATA -RDL 4x 8.5GB disks. Then had a dual layer burner installed in my computer. Premiere Element dialog "incompatible disk" The RITDATA says the problem is Adobe, the Geek Squad says the problem is Adobe.
SO ANSWER THIS QUESTION: Can Adobe Premiere Elements 12 burn a dual layer dvd disk? If not, which of the components is at fault? I am trying to burn 18 copies of this video (no copyright infringements) and don't tell me to to divide it into 3 disks.

What are you burning to DVD disc - DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or AVCHD format on DVD?
Does your DVD CD burner support double layer single sided discs?
Premiere Elements is supposed to (been there and done that....)
1. burn to Folder (8.5) for Publish+Share/Disc/DVD and Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD
(you take the VIDEO_TS for the former and BDMV Folder in the latter to a program like ImgBurn
for the actual burn to the DVD double layer single sided disc)
2. burn to disc 8.5 GB/240 minutes
Have you gone the burn to folder Folder (8.5 GB) route?
Have you tried another brand of disc in spite of by the disc manufacturer and the Geek Squad are telling you?
A double layer single sided disc is labelled 8.5 GB/240 minutes. In reality, that 8.5 GB is 7.95 GB. Where are you
coming up with 7.5 GB for your disc? Was that due to typing glitch?

Sense Error Message when trying to burn Dual-Layer DVDs?

Hey all,
I am trying to burn a dual-layer DVD disc with the internal drive in my MacBook Pro.
I am getting the same error message from Toast each time I try to burn a disc. I get no response from Disk Utility (it just says "waiting for the disc drive") and Finder doesn't recognize the dual-layer disc when I try to burn in Finder.
I've heard that it may be a media issue, so I've tried with every single brand of DVDs that I can get my hands on. So far, I've tried Verbatim, Sony, and Memorex. I can't find any other brands of media, even at Best Buy?
I've heard that it may be a security update that might have caused this issue. System Profiler says that my machine can burn both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL.
What is going on?!??

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The two most common suggestions are (a) try other media, which you've done (and Verbatim normally work) and (b) run a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it to see if some dirt or dust on the lens it causing the problem. If this doesn't fix it then it sounds like a hardware fault and best to let Apple check it out.

Media write error for dual layer DVD burn

I am having a problem burning a dmg to a dual layer DVD using the internal DVD writer. I have tried both Disk Utility and SimplyBurns.
Both program s go through the preparation for the file, and when it attempts to burn the disk I get a 'media write error'. I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks. I have successfully burned both CDs and regular DVDs with the drive.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix this?

Dual Layer DVD write error #80020022 - failure to communicate with disk

This only happens on Dual Layer DVDs, and always just as it's finishing. "Communcation with the disk drive failed error code: 80020022"
Used Disk Util and direct burn via finder - both give same error. The image is a .cdr created via DiskUtil, original from a factory cut dual layer DVD, about 7.2GB. The target blank is a "Double Layer DVD+R" Memorex.
The resultant disk is full, but unusable. Re-insertion sees it as a blank disk with no usable space. It wrote something, but certainly not the TOC?
MacBook Pro 2.5, about 6 months old, lastest Leopard
Please - any ideas? Do I have a hardware issue?

Wow - thanks for the quick reply, pullman! I did all of the ideas you listed, no luck. The only way to make this fail is to write to a double sided DVD, I've gone through a stack already just testing/failing. This also fails when writing to a double sided DVD through the finder (then clicking on "burn")

Firmware upgrade for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E to burn dual layer DVD?

Dear All
I have a PowerBookG4 with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E which it seems apple has disabled from burning dual layer DVD. I've read around that there are firware upgrades that can enable actions again. I can't find any for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E, though. Any ideas?

As stated in previous posts there have been several issues with the Matshita Optical drives that Apple has installed in there computers. Over time the problem has been discussed and it would appear that there are several things that come into play here.
Apple has made it so that many of the drives they intall are in fact not capable of there full potential.
It in fact boils down to an issue of Copywrite Infringment. Apple doesn't want to put itself in a position to be open to Lawsuits from the Motion Picture Industry.
Many of the drives that do not work up to there full potential have FIRMWARE updates that are offered by the manufacture to remedy this problem and some do not.
It has also been found that the casual user that burns DVD's isn't aware of the huige difference in the Format's available for DVD Burning. and the many limitations of these different drives as far as Media and Speed of Media is concerned. Many of the DL burners that were installed will not burn DL. Apple has had such a huge amount of dissatisfied customers that many that will take the time and if they still have AppleCare these drives will be replaced free of charge.

There are several Applications that are standard programs that come with OSX.
Of these, several have the ability to burn a project.
iTunes....iMovie.....Disk Utility.
Each of the above mentioned applications were developed for a specific purpose. However, they are capable of doing more than the original developers intended.
The problem in my eyes is the lack of information for a new user to Mac.
In what one would consider the perfect world, you simply choose a project, drag it in to one or more of the applications mentioned above and simply click burn and you are finished.
This is not always the case.
Often users are left with the issue of no clear cut direction on how to use these different burning softwares, and the ability to have a clear cut step by step user interface.
All of the furnished OSX burning software is in fact usable and works well.
The problem is HOW TO USE THEM.
The more experienced users find this either to be a non issue or will take the time to work with these different applications until they figure out how to use them.
There are of course different Advertisements and FAQ's that cover these to some degree that leave users more confused than when they started.
One of the major issues that accompany this problem is this.
Not all Burners that Apple uses in there machines are the same.
Not all Burners will accept all the different Media's that are available on the market.
Thus leaving many users confused. Not having a clear cut understanding of what the difference is between these different Media's and there use.

Apple has found itself in a delima with the Motion Picture Industry, as well as The Music Industry over the issue of offering there users with the capability of copying Copyrighted material. Thus leaving them open for Law Suits.

It is almost impossible to cover all aspects of this issue on these forums.
There are of course different softwares available that make the burning experience much easier and user friendly.
Roxio is one of the industry leaders in the development of Mac compatible Burning Software. They offer 2 of the industry leaders in this area.
Toast-7 and Popcorn.
This solves only one portion of the problem. Both of these software offering give the user the ability to copy about anything.
However, there is so much controversy over the issue of Movie and Music copying, the manufactures of the Computers, and the Burners try to limit the users ability to copy these, and thus be clear of any Legal Issue.
Here again rises the problem of computer users being mad because the industry has placed limitations on there ability to use there product in a fast easy to use method.
Again there are work around to all of these issues.
The problem then becomes who out there is willing to tell us what is the easiest most trouble free method of using these computers, burners, software,and media.
The burner manufactures offer there burners.
To get them to work to there full potential the users then must search out the 3rd party Firmware updates that will enable them to work properly. This is not an issue with all burners but quite a few.
Most readers on these forums have read about the MEDIA compatibility and poor quality issues these are covered in a prior link.
To sum this up, the resources are available to do just about anything one wants to do in the copy area.
Not every copy problem is the same because of all the different elements that come into the equation, Burner, Media, Software, Firmware.
So if a user has a problem and needs the information and the resources to copy there projects whatever they may be.
Be through, give as much information as you can.
Keep it simple, No need for the use of exotic terms that most people don't understand anyway.
In-depth. Tell all aspects of the issue and what you have what you are using and what you want to accomplish.
If there is an answer out there.
Someone will Chime in.
The users on these forums for the most part are more than willing to share in there knowledge, free of charge.
One last thing,
When a user gives you an answer for you problem, for the most part they believe it to be a fact. Sometimes this isn't the case, we have all been guilty of, this is not done with malicious intent. It is done trying to help.
I personally have been misinformed, or tried a fix, that will work in one instance but not another. So tell all you can about your problem.

Dual Layer DVD+R, Optiarc. Successful burn, no mounting.

Strange one this, and difficult to point the blame on anything in particular.
Got a new Mac Pro (early 2008) recently, all is well so far. I wanted to back up plenty of my stuff onto some Dual Layer DVDs - and burned six discs successfully using Disk Utility for burning cdr files, isos and stand alone (Finder) data.
All burned and verified successfully. All mounted successfully. Applications, programs and so on can be run and opened from the disk, HOWEVER, if I eject the disk and put it back in, it fails to mount, and claims it is blank. Works great if I never eject the disk, but upon reinsertion, the disk is unreadable.
Under an XP installed Boot Camp, there's the same issue. I burned an iso, installed what I needed to install straight from the DVD just fine. Left the disk in, restarted into OSX, the disk appeared on the desktop just fine. I eject the disk and put it back in, .... disk is unmountable. Same disk that installed software from the DVD under XP is also unmountable under XP!
I'm really puzzled, here! Are my disks completely useless? Is the firmware incorrect? Is Leopard failing? I'm only getting this with DL disks - normal DVDs and CDRs are fine.
Anyone else getting this? Anyone able to offer any suggestions?! Thanks!

Ok, so I answered my own question!. If anybody else is having this, or similar problems, I found that a new firmware is available for this drive, and can be found at : http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-7170A/
And I flashed the drive using firmware v1.85 - this version now successfully mounts the previously written disks.
Flashed using the Win32 version of BinFlash (http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/) under XP on Boot Camp.

Burning Dual Layer DVD's

Hi everyone,
I have a refurbished MBP- 15.4" 2.53 GHz Dual Core 320 GB with 10.6.3 and Toast 10. As I just got the MBP and haven't burned anything with it yet, my question is, which DVD-/+R DL media is the best to use. On my G4 MDD, I typically have problems burning Sony, Maxell and (sometimes) Memorex media. Normally TDK and Philips work best on that unit.
Any suggestions?

I attempted to burn a dual layer dvd (Verbatim DVD+R DL, 8X) on my (PowerPC) Mac G4, 10.4.11, Toast 9.0.7. The drive is a Pioneer DVR-109 with DL layer burn capabilities. I turned buffer under-run protection off and burned at 2.4X speed (on an 8X disc). The burn failed. I got the following error right off the bat:
Sense Key Illegal Request
Sense Code 0x26
Invalid Field in Parameter List
I attempted to burn another dual layer dvd on my (Intel) MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz dual duo-core, running 10.6.4 with the stock superdrive. Toast 10.0.3. Same settings (buffer under-run off, 2.4X speed, 8X disc). Same error.
Both times I was burning as Disc Copy of a dmg file.
When I attempted to burn the files on both my G4 and MacBookPro through the Finder/Disk Utility, both burns were successful.
I don't want to have to save an image file out of Toast each time I go to burn a dual layer disc and then burn with the Finder/Disk Utilities. Is there any other really good media burner for Mac that I can use instead of Toast? I don't want one that just burns video as I want to be able to burn data disks as well (both Mac and PC format) and audio.

Trouble burning dual layer dvd's with my superdirve

Hello, my question is regarding burning dual layer dvd's on my macbook pro. After finishing up a 5.6 GB movie in DVDSP4, i exported as an image (burned it as a .img) and then opened it up in disk utility for burning. Upon execution, i received an error message that said " the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I then tried burning the .img via DVDSP4 as well as the standard drag to disk on my desktop, all with the same luck. When trying the standard drag, drop and burn method (burn folder on my desktop), i received the error code 0X80020022.
After having no luck, i tested my super drive with standard CD's and single layer DVD's which it burned to just fine. I then tried switching media from memorex dvd dl +r's to sony dl + r's, but unfortunately it just refuses to burn to dual layer.
Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

I can not get a dual layer DVD+R to burn properly. The disk pops out before it's finished, usually at the end of the multiplexing stage. iDVD seems to think the disk is still burning for about 20 more minutes although the box says "done". I tried it with an external DVD burner with the same result. I'm running the latest iDVD version available on a MacBook Pro running Lion. Any ideas out there?

• for SD-Video and SL-DVD - I never go under 25Gb
• for DL-DVD I would guess that 50Gb free is safe
• if HD-material is used (needs space to be downscaled to SD-Vide0 as this is DVD standard) - 4-5 times more

Burnning dual layer dvd Encore CS5.5 errors out.

Here is the greatest error I have ever seen.
I got to burn a dual layer dvd transcoded from AVCHD 1080i with fallowing settings.
Edited footage in PPro and send to Encore via Dynamic link, created dvd project using Mpeg2 with 9mbps, Dolby 192 for Audio.
File size to be burned on dvd is 5.67gb, aprox 1 hour 10 min transcoded with 9mbps, 720x40 wide screen, audio is 192kbps Dolby.
There are three menus one is main and tow sceen selection menus, noting fancy everything as default. menus linked as usual nothing fancy and and it is very basic.
All assets, that used for motion menus and main video is transcoded fine, but when it gets to put dvd together I get this error
Encore starts organizing videos for disk and after that it gets to this above and thats it. Press ok Build progress box gives fail message and option to Ok it. After pressing Ok button this box goes away to build panel.
I have tried to change an Automatic layer break to manual still get the same error, I have tried a custom layer break and still get the same error again, I have tried dvd, and an image, and folder for dvd, still the same error there to. I have redone project from scratch and still got the same result.
However previously I have burned many Dual layer dvds using the same method described, and same settings described, and never had this problem.
Nothing on the PS was changed except the updates installed regularly.
Anybody have any Idea what is this all about? Because I just burned 16 Blu Ray discs, and 16 Dual layer discs on one of the project, and next one a day latter this happens.

I'm having the same problem. not once did it, the encore was automatically break in the case of dual layer dvd. now he does not. I mark the box DUAL LAYER 8.54gb, do DVD disc or image or folder, or change the marking of the layer break from automatic tomanual, and it does not. in the end he always gives the message: duallayer requerid.
wanted to know how to do this manually break, because even in the manual or here on the website of adobe, has no suchinformation. does not show clearly how to manually break. please if someone can give a help, thank you.

Burning to a dual layer DVD

Hello,
I've just finished a project that I want to take to a facility to have copies made. I've been told in the past that using a DVD-R can create problems with the copies when used in certain DVD players. I'm running DVD SP2 and I can't seem to get the program to accept anything but a DVD-R. Is this a preferences issue or should I take the actual Video and Audio TS and burn it straight to the dual layer DVD? Would appreciate any help?

It could be a hardware and/or software problem.
As far as Dual-Layer disks go ... I don't think they were around in the DVDSP 2 days... that's too long ago for me to know (without searching, and searching is your friend in this case).
Also your G4 might only have a DVD-R drive and that might be why DVD SP is only accepting DVD-R's. You most likely don't even have a Dual-Layer DVD drive unless you installed one later on in your G4.
How large is the Video_TS folder? You'd only need to burn it to a Dual Layer if it's >4.7gigs and even if it is you need to create a Dual-Layer break point in DVDSP to tell the disk when to switch over to the other layer on the disk. Or if it's just over 4.7 gigs (approx.) you can try and re-compress it and see if you can fit it onto one disk (which may be better for compatability issues, something you seem to be concerned about) - you may end up having more problems w/ Dual-Layers and players compared to DVD-R's and players.
