Burning DVD etc....

Hi I am new to the forum and just recently bought a new powerbook g4. I am also a new mac user. My question is:
I downloaded a video file and it is being played through windows media player. I was wondering how I could burn that onto a DVD? Any help would be great.
Thank you

  • Panasonic VDR-D200 Extraction burn DVD etc

Just joined this group today after getting some help from MAC Support. I'm having trouble with importing movies from my Panasonic VDR-D200 mini DVD camera. The software that came with the camera doesn't seem to work well so I contacted Mac. They indicated that since my IMac G5, is recognizing my Panasonic camera, I could use an extraction program and then I would be able to import the movie into iMovie for trhe purpose of editing or burning a DVD (WHICH IS MY PRIMARY OBJECTIVE) I used Mac the Ripper which was able to take all the files off my camera and save them on my hard drive..but what do I do now? How do I take those VTS and Video files and turn into a movie. Pretty uneducated here on the video end of Macs..thanks for your help!

Take the camera back where you bought it and exchange for a model that records to tape. You'll be happier.
DVD format is MPEG-2 which is a playback format not intended for editing.
Converting MPEG-2 is a pain and is time consuming. It also requires additional software and some $$ to to buy it.
If your camera also includes a Firewire cable you'll be able to just plug and play with iMovie.

  • Burned DVD is grainy (menus, video, etc) But project isn't

When I burn my project using iDVD to a DVD-R the intro screen, videos, and most text is grainy and looks low quality. I have plenty of memory on my new iMac (158gb). Is there a way to make the burned DVD look as high quality as the project as I see it prior to burning it?
Some of the linked project files are on our server, could that be part of it?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

How do I adjust to higher dissolution?
Buy a Blue Ray Burner and software that supports burning HD.
(Not widely used yet on most macs .... but we're getting close).
Essentially iDVD6 is still low resolution software (sorry to say). The final image quality on most stills is less than a third of a megapixel. Blue Ray will change this once it is widely accepted and used on most macs.
These links might help in the meantime:

  • After bringing in the movie from a video camera in iMovie and enhancing it tiles and transitions etc how do you and where do you save the project for burning DVD's using iDVD?

Where do you save a movie project for burning DVD's using iDVD?

I recommend that you use SHARE/TO MEDIA BROWSER in Large size. Then in iDVD, you open the Media Browser and navigate to your project. You can drag it into your iDVD project from there.
You can also use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and save to the location of your choice. You can then drag and drop into iDVD.

  • Hardware Error when burning DVD's

I keep getting an error message when burning DVD's using Toast Titanium on my iMac..it reads:
"Drive Reported an error, Sense key = hardware error, sense code = 0 x 03."
Twice after getting that message I couldn't continue to burn and it stopped, once it did continue to burn and finished successfully. Any ideas, anyone?
    17" iMac G5 w/ iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   upgraded to 1GB RAM

I get the same message today when burning from Toast 7.02 on my iMac. It happened when I was trying to make an audio CD from my iTunes collection (not when Copying from CD to CD). The exact message I got in the middle of my burn was:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = hardware Error
    Sense Code = 0x03, 0x01
I tryed again with another CD and got the same thing. I never had a problem with these CD's (TDK CD-R up to 48x).
I wonder if there has to be some sort of software upgrade fro Roxio Toast or is this a superdrive malfunction/etc. My Superdrive gets very loud during this burn as well. I may take it in to Apple Genius Bar. Any ideas?

  • Can No Longer Burn DVDs

I have a Lenovo G700 series laptop and have recently found that I can no longer burn DVDs.  I can burn CDs and the drive can read DVDs & CDs.
I trawled the forums for any clue of what has gone askew including the registry fix, tried different media, different burning programs, files vs disc images and still no result.
I, and also a friend who works in IT suspect a hardware fault and, since still under warranty, contacted the support helpline who were quick to answer.  went through all the options for diagnostics and came down the "hit the system with the One-Key-Recovery" option to reset it back to factory preset condition to see if that fixed it.
    Problem........
I have spent a very long time getting this machine set up with my home studio software etc and have large amounts of data which beggers the question, do I want to go through all that and how do I back up all my data prior to that as the machine will be wiped with no DVD writer.  I assured the guy on the phone that we we almost certain that it was the ODD hardware that had failed and could he send out a replacement?
Being still under warranty, I would have to return it to the service center where they would......... guess what, reset to factory preset prior to fitting the new hardware to ensure that the hardware was indeed faulty.
    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!
    Catch 22
Why can they not just send out a replacement drive for me to fit myself?
Warranty runs out in September which is probably how long it will take me to zip and backup my data using CDs or for out a pile of cash on a USB HDD all for the price of a replacement drive.
    Can someone please help?

Anyone know how I can get someone from Lenovo Customer Support to read & reply to this post?  I'm not that sussed with forum methods.

  • Video "jigsaw" artifacts appear when camera pans on burned DVDs

I've been pulling my hair out for days as I export endless new sequences at different settings and then burn DVDs, only to find that the problem does not go away. The issue is the infamous "jigsaw" artifact effect, or whatever you want to call it, meaning that when viewing the resulting DVDs, when the camera pans, images "tear" and kind of spazz out. This seems most noticeable when panning past straight vertical objects, but is not limited to only this circumstance. My suspicion is that this is all the result of an interlacing issue in iDVD, but I have certainly learned that I am capable of overlooking the obvious or being wrong. What I don't understand is that with all of us out there working on Avids and using iDVD, either there does not seem to be a unified ideal export setting that resolves this issue, or I am having a comparatively unique problem. The shame is that most of the DVDs are looking great, and it is only this one issue that is sabotaging completion of this project. I'm at my wits end, so any and all knowledgeable help is supremely appreciated. Help me keep my hair.
When viewing any of these exported clips within quicktime player, the jigsaw is not visible. But when viewing the burned DVDs on my Mac, the jigsaw is visible.
When viewing the burned DVDs on my Panasonic HDTV (TH-42PX75U) the jigsaw is visible. When viewing the burned DVDs on my Sony Trinitron Production monitor (non HD), the jigsaw is visible.
Avid Software: Avid Xpress DV 3.5.0
Editing system info: Mac G4 "Mirror door" model - Dual 1.2 Ghz PowerPC - memory 1024 MB
OS Software on Editing System - OS X version 10.2.3
Quicktime version on Editing system: QT version 6.3
Software used to burn DVDs: Idvd 8 version 7.0.1
Computer used to burn DVDs: MacBookPro3,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz (codec downloaded from Avid and installed - prior post about video not displayed in QT exports was due to missing codec)
Quicktime version on Computer used to burn DVDs - QT Version 7.4 (92) (with Pro upgrade)
    DVD media used: TDK DVD-R 8X 4.7GB
Info on sequence I am burning - A 1 hour and 50 minute program of African wildlife footage all shot on regular mini DV tapes. Camera used was the Panasonic AGDVX100A on the 24 frame setting that does not require a software fix (the correction is done in camera). All the footage was digitized using this camera. When viewing any of these exports afterward within quicktime player, the "jigsaw" is not visible. It only becomes visible after burning them and then watching the dvd. All burns in iDVD 8 are using the "professional" burn mode.
Export settings from Avid and iDVD 8 result summary -
    1) Exported at "same as source" from Avid yields arguably the absolute worst result, as I rather suspected with the whole field / interlacing issue, but I was feeling hopeful.
    2) Trying to bypass Quicktime by using "dvstream" as the export setting also yields a very poor result. This jigsaw problem does not occur, but the resulting image is terrible. Very milky blacks, the compression is worse, as in much more noticeable, than any other export, and the image is soft and thin looking, rather anemic, and it ruins the visuals completely. What is a bit odd to me however is that I had been using dvstream to burn DVDs of other projects for years on prior versions of iDVD and it never seemed to be a problem. As I tried this one first, without having the Avid codec installed in my MacBook (which I use to burn as I can run iDVD8 on it, also meaning that trying quicktime reference is not an option, I must export, then move the completed export to my macbook pro), I am currently exporting it one more time to see if installation of the codec fixes the horrible compression and color result, but I am not hopeful at all.
    3) Tried using an Avid forum suggestion that recommended using 720 X 480 - crop/pad - RGB color levels - even (lower field first) - native dimension 720 x 480. No good.
    4) Another Avid forum suggestion to try the "Animation" setting for video
instead of "Avid DV" is not a viable option. The infamous "2 GB limit" message
comes up as the export nears completion and aborts. This message does not appear
with any other export setting. When cutting my sequence in half, the same problem occurs. Even if I could get it to work, the result would be useless if it meant I had to send people several DVDs of the program chopped up into little bits.
    5) Heres a summary of other export attempts all using Quicktime movie and "Avid DV" for video, keeping in mind the info I read about how at least one version of iDVD had the field order (ntsc vs pal)reversed a while back. I would expect that Apple has fixed this problem by now, but just in case...
    a) odd field - 720 x 486 - 601 - crop/pad - 4:3 Non-square
    b) odd field - 720 x 480 - 601 - crop/pad - 4:3 Non-square
    c) even field - 720 x 486 - 601 - crop/pad - 4:3 Non-square
    d) even field - 720 x 480 - - 601 - crop/pad - 4:3 Non-square
Suggestions to buy a different dvd burning program or new software are nice and all, but I simply cannot afford it. I also have a fear that if I were to try a different program that the same darn thing would happen, as no one seems to be able to say with 100% certainty that this specific problem would be fixed. The only thing that would be worse than my sense of hopelessness and helplessness at present would be spending more money and still not having this maddening issue be resolved.
Help... and thanks to any of you who take the time to read this epic length post and reply!

PROBLEM SOLVED! Thanks to having downloaded Toast 8, the dreaded interlacing has disappeared. The first test made me nervous. I exported from Avid using Sorenson and using the "automatic" settings for Toast's detection of fields etc. The DVD still had the jigsaw at the same spots, but it was not as pronounced as some of the tests with iDVD. I then exported "same as source" and used the advanced settings in Toast to tell it "lower field" and maxed the compression settings as much as I could without exceeding disc space. The DVD result is the best looking I've seen so far and all interlacing artifacts are gone! Thanks to Blackdog at the Avid Forum. I now know this interlacing problem was 100% the fault of iDVD 8 and will be using Toast from now on.

  • I was having problems burning DVDs' fro iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK?

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Having Major issues trying to burn DVD's.

I did not have any issues this past week burning DVD's for family members. I decided to put it on hold for a few more days to make our holiday travel trip to DE. I arrived, opened the program, began the burning process (which by the way took close to 4 1/2 almost 5 hours) and when I thought it was finally completed...an error message appeared about a multiplexer.
After reviewing previous issues with others having the same problem, they said to check the hard drive and or the monolingual setting, etc. Possibly would help to remove some unwanted or unnecessary items.
Would this really resolve my problem?
How would I access the Hard Drive and or Monolingual settings to do so?
I'm by no means a computer guru, but do know how to access a few things.
Also, I believe my DVD+RW has plenty of space, considering the content was just burned on a few DVD's earlier just last week. It holds approximately 120 minutes/4.7GB...and the movie itself is only 60 minutes long with 2.4 GB of the DVD being used.
PLEASE HELP! This DVD is a very important tribute for my family, due to my recent Grandfather's sudden death!
    Thank You!

I think you can solve your problem very simply.
Change your Media to Maxell 16X DVD-R Not +RW
If I am right your particular Optical Drive doesn't like + or RW not to mention if you have 10.0
Check the packaging of the Maxell 16X DVD-R and make sure it says it reads and writes 1X-2X-4X-8X and 16X
Repair Permissions in the disk utility, then my quess is your problems will go away.

  • Burning DVD's

Why can't iTunes burn dvd's? I have a dvd burner on my computer, which is new, and I would really much appreciate it if it could. Seeing is how I'm Canadian, I'll have to wait until late 2008 until movies, tvs shows, etc are available on the Canadian store.
Canada 7 vs 0 Russia. LETS GO CANADA!!

Not sure what you mean as I burn DVD's through iTunes on my Mac frequently. If you are talking about burning iTunes video content to a DVD that can be played in a home DVD player, you can't because of the protection on the files. The protection is there by request of the copyright holders for this content, not Apple.

  • Burned DVD's have momentary pixelation

    Hi
When I export my project from FCPX everything is perfect. When I use IDVD to add theme and chapters there is pixelation for 2 minutes on the burned DVD at the exact same spot of my project every time. Even though the source is 100% it keeps occurring and it's a critical part of the project(wedding). What is going on?

    Hi
How did You do the Export from FCP ?
    I do
    As Quicktime - NO QT-Converstion
And I do as SD-Video Quality - Feeding iDVD HD usually give bad result due to bad down scaling function
Free Space on BOOT hard disk ? How much ?
Is there a special with the material where problems arises ?
    - Photos in any other format than .jpg
    - Video Sequence - Video-CODEC and frame-rate here ?
    - Special funcyion here as "Slow Down, Anti Shake etc) ?
    - AUDIO - I only use 16-bit 48 or 44.1kHz .aiff - NO .mp3, .vma etc -

  • Can you burn dvd's in PSE 11 without purchasing more software?

I just upgraded from PSE 7 because I had problems with sharing and burning dvd's, now it seems that I can not burn a cd or dvd without buying more software.  What am I missing here?

The options in PSE have always been limited where it’s possible to create a data disk for viewing on computers or a back-up disk. Windows users can create a wmv file and then use that in the free Windows DVD maker to create a DVD which can be played on a TV but it’s a bit cumbersome. Ideally you should have purchased the combo Photoshop+Premiere Elements which is the best value, imho and which will give you lots of output options for DVD, Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook etc. I had a similar problem some years ago but managed to get my store to exchange PSE for PSE/PRE.

  • Want to record edit and burn dvds of videos from canon camcorder what is the best way

what is the easiest way to transfer recordings from my canon camcorder hd to dvds after editing. The new imovie does not have idvd on it to burn dvds.

I'm assuming you're editing in iMovie? If you still have an older retail version of iLife, you can use that to install iDVD - I am using it with mavericks. Or, the retail 09 and 11 iLife disks are still available at some online resellers. The best thing out there still is iDVD with its customizable menus, themes, etc. However, there are other options for just burning: one good ons is Roxio Toast; then there is the free app Burn (basic I'm told, but works). Or google for others. Personally, I'd get iDVD.
The new iMovie (or the older versions) did not have iDVD built in - it's just a link to the iDVD application. FWIW, I prefer to use the older iMovie versions because they have more quality options to choose from when exporting. With the new iMovie, choose to export to file and choose your recording size and then you can drag that file into a burning app (or iDVD if you get it).

  • Music dropping in burned DVD

I hope someone can help. I tried just about everything that everyone has suggested so my DVD will burn properly, but my music keep dropping at the same point in every DVD that I've burned.
This is what I've done so far:
Made slideshow in iPhoto - played beautifully for a Relay For Life event. People want copies.
Shared to iDVD from iPhoto Slideshow. iDVD kept crashing at startup.
Went to Apple Discussions and took someone's advice to reinstall iDVD, in the meantime,
Sent to Quicktime Player (played beautifully). However, can't burn from QTP
Saved as .mov file, but iMovie doesn't import it as video
    Reinstalled iDVD
Made DVD from iPhoto album (not slideshow) and iTunes Playlist (previewed and it played beautifully again).
Burned DVD, played it - audio dropped for 2-6 seconds in two of the songs
    Went back onto Apple Discussions
Figured out that I should re-format my music to AIFF files which I did.
    Edited project with new music
    Burned another DVD (Maxell DVD-R)
Again audio dropped at same spot again
    Went back onto Apple Dicussions
Took suggestion to saved as image file.
Burned to DVD at 2.4x (my lowest setting) for 5th time and music still drops at the exact spot on each copy I burn.
Right now I have the same project in .dvdproj, .mov and .img
I made a DVD about 18 months ago, when I was new to Mac and it was the easiest thing ever. I never had anything close to this happening, or I would never have attempted it again.
I'm out of ideas - can anyone give me other suggestions.
    Thanks!!!

Can you confirm you are using iDVD 7 from iLife 8?
This will not run on Tiger, it requires Leopard.
If you are running iDVD 6 you are in the wrong forum, but we will carry on here!
Previewing in iDVD is not the same as previewing the final version prior to burning.
To preview the final version, without wasting another DVD blank, go to File menu and click on Save as Disk Image.
This creates the final version and does all the rendering etc short of the actual burn.
If you open DVD Player you can play that Disk Image as though it was a DVD.
If everything works, only then burn to a DVD. In this case use Disk Utility to burn the DVD - or better still, invest in Toast.
As for the audio drop-outs, are you sure you are using AIFF files that are not DRM copy protected?
